    Not only were Laurel and Hardy funny in the 1920s they are still funny now over 100 year later in 2022. And what's even more important is that they were devoted friends who actually loved each other. RIP !

      Amen to that. Several years later - after both Ollie and Stan had left us - Hal Roach was asked why he hadn't created another Laurel Hardy duo. Roach simply replied that guys like that just aren't around any more...

      @@colincharlton9339 yes, Stan burns the house, Ollie comes home wearing his lodge uniform and his sword is bent. He sits down in his ruined house and tells Stan, " Would you mind closing the door? I want to be alone." Then it starts raining. Stan wrote just about all their material, the ideas were his. Oliver I think is the better actor. His facial expressions and the way he moves and carries himself have been emulated by countless comedians over the years including the great Jackie Gleason. Stan was the mastermind. It is true, his comedy with Ollie stands the test of time. It will always make people laugh. Buster Keaton said at Stan Laurel's funeral, "Chaplin wasn't the funniest, I wasn't the funniest, Stan Laurel was the funniest."
      Additionally, Stan Laurel was known as a kind hearted man, brilliantly funny; one of the last things that Stan is quoted as saying is something he wanted all his friends to know. Stan said that, "If any of you cry at my funeral, I will never speak to you, again." lol

    I think what made them so great, Laruel and Hardy, is that they were genuine friends off set, as they were on-screen, and when you watch their performances, you can see between the lines, that they did have genuine affection for one another.
    In fact, after Hardy's death, Laurel wouldn't perform anymore, because of Hardy's death, and his family members said Laurel never quite got over when Hardy passed away.

    Till the end....Laurel was a heavy smoker until suddenly quitting around 1960.[35] In January 1965, he underwent a series of x-rays for an infection on the roof of his mouth.[36] He died on 23 February 1965, aged 74, four days after suffering a heart attack.[37] Minutes before his death, he told his nurse that he would not mind going skiing, and she replied that she was not aware that he was a skier. "I'm not," said Laurel, "I'd rather be doing that than this!" A few minutes later he died quietly in his armchair.[38]

      I recently watched again "The Laurel and Hardy Murder Case" which was made in 1930. It is one of the funniest films ever made, despite its brevity. The bat scene is hilarious. Laurel and Hardy films are just so clever in their comic inventiveness and great timing. Buster Keaton said of Stan " Chaplin was not the best. I was not the best. Stan was the best". Stan was only angry twice: once when people said that he was bankrupt ( he was comfortably off and invested wisely) and that MCs, television presenters nowadays, are called stars. He said " what are they stars of?? ". Presenters, to me, are just presenters. Stars are artist such as Jackie Mason, who have tremendous talent. It really annoys me when talentless people on television become famous with no discernable talent.

      If course, there's people today who talk down on the guy personally but you can not deny he had talent in movies and of course his comedy. He was the last of those people who came out of vaudeville shows to the big screen and transitioned well into it, a top box office draw. Comedy since then has been on a slow decline, more into the vulgar or obscene stuff. The family friendly comedies are almost gone now.

    An odd aspect of Charlie Chaplin in that he knew Stan very well - they both came to the USA from the UK with the Fred Karno company - but Chaplin did not apparently mention Stan at all in his autobiography. Stan's comedy survived but Chaplin's comedy appears very dated now to most people. Stan and Ollie made the transition to sound but Chaplin didn't.

    • @coleparker
      @coleparker 5 лет назад +3

    • @lindashelley3635
      @lindashelley3635 4 года назад

      Dirk Ruana There’s an interesting reason often given for that. Many of the silent film actors, especially those who starred in more dramatic roles, often had ‘real’ voices that didn’t match their onscreen personas. They simply didn’t sound like the audiences imagined they would, and so were not accepted by those audiences. Therefore many of their careers were often destroyed almost overnight. This is very well illustrated in the fate of the character Lina Lamont in the film Singing In The Rain.

    It's great to hear Jerry tell a story where he's not all pissy about something or other. His stories always tend to revolve around how others are interacting with him, very narcissistic which is his charm and curse. That's what Jerry is. But this is a great story and there must have been so many more he could have told, especially of the early days. He seems to be wearing a woman's watch here too. Not to mention the god-awful fire engine red sweater and yellow shirt. There's a lot going on here when you start peeling back the layers.

    Stan was right... when you're on the stage or the set, if you're going to sell the gag successfully, you can't hold anything back. If you hesitate, it'll show in the performance and what might be a good gag will become a mediocre gag. Any actor knows that you have to commit yourself to your character to be convincing but for comedy it is even more important and for physical comedy and slapstick especially (which, by its very nature, is already hard to do well.)

    Many comics today should listen to this segment as cancel culture picks away at our comedic geniuses out there. No more shows like All in the Family or Jefferson’s because many no longer have the ability to laugh at themselves. These are shows that would push a funny zinger of a punchline but racial or not, it push its audience to the center so, black or white, we could enjoy both shows. And we did.

      I don't know why you were insulted for stating your opinion. I always appreciated the people who made me laugh - The Marx Brothers, Three Stooges, W. C. Fields, Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy, Gilda Radner, John Candy, Gracie Allen. I just wasn't crazy about Jerry Lewis. I didn't say he was NEVER funny - but all told, he just didn't do much for me. On the other hand, my first wife thought Lewis was hysterical. Appreciation of comics, actors, or musicians can be pretty subjective. Different people just like different things.

      You're right. It is subjective. I thought the short skits Martin & Lewis did on Colgate Comedy Hour were better than any of their movies for they were like their famous nightclub shows. After all, the Colgate Comedy Hour was really a televised version of a nightclub show. A good example of "vaudio."

      @Judgy Judgerton You make a good point about the fame of Martin and Lewis. Alan King once said in an interview that in all of his 60 years in show business, he never heard anyone get laughs that compared to the laughs that Martin and Lewis used to get. He said it was nearly impossible to get in to see them, such was the demand for tickets. Until I read your comment I had not considered the fact that neither Dean Martin nor Jerry Lewis ever reached that level of popularity again, with the possible exception of the Rat Pack in Las Vegas, but there again, Dean Martin was not working alone.

A singer but so what? Gauguin? An artist but so what? Tchaikovsky? A composer but so what? Etc etc etc Or is the private life of a comedian more relevant than artists and composers?

      He worked with Dean Martin who was handsome, great singer and good actor. Women liked Dean Martin and so did men. However, Jerry Lewis was just the opposite, and his comedy was mostly childlike, and at times embarrassing to watch, and not funny. Stan Laurel was childlike but he was funny. Lewis could sing, but his voice was not even in the ballpark when compared with Dean Martin. Actually, I think some of their problem was Jerry Lewis being jealous of Dean Martin. Being relegated to second fiddle is rough for someone with a huge ego.
