I like "The Nutty Professor" a lot. But I found the Buddy Love character vaguely disturbing. I kept getting the feeling that this was not just the professor's alter ego, but Jerry's as well. I've read several accounts of him being arrogant and mean-spirited in person. I watched one of his last interviews. The reporter was just a kid and this was one of his first assignments. Jerry was cold, abrupt and rude. I'm sure the young man was very discouraged by the experience. I felt so sorry for him. Jerry revealed a dark and disturbing side of himself that was definitely not amusing in any way. He could have been more gracious to the poor kid. Instead he acted like a jerk. I guess many of those rumors were true.
This is within the first year of his show and probably the last time he truly lost control of an interview. Jerry Lewis just used him and Letterman at this point was so respectful he went with it.
Oh my gosh, the short bit at @23:43 where he gets all philosophical is hilarious! I'm going to memorize it and use it on people who are all full of themselves. It's an obvious gag, and he does it so perfectly.

@@lindashelley3635 Compared to today's so called "entertainment"----Jerry Lewis is indeed, quite subdued. I think that THAT contrasting-irony was the [paradoxical] point that was initially being made. The fact that Jerry Lewis (back then) could have been called anything BUT subdued only proves the point being made about today's overhyped/obnoxious garbage that so often passes as entertainment.

Jerry Lewis was a genius. Virtually everyone who dealt or worked with him said he was very hard to deal with, but successful, wealthy & talented people usually are. Notice he's almost chain-smoking & coughing in 1982, and only 2 months later he had a heart attack. Martin Short nailed it when he says to do a good impression of him you act like you're sucking on a lozenge. RIP Jerry.
Dave just could not lock in on Jerry's wavelength... and it's not about speed Carson was slower but got it... it was about paying attention to the tiny signals.
18:45 That film with French actor, comedian and director Pierre Richard never got made. Pierre Richard said in an interview he and Jerry had "talked" about making a movie together. Never happened. Pierre Richard payed a moving tribute to Jerry Lewis when he died.
Jerry: “You don't see someone say”... LMFAO 😂🤣😂🤣😂 I fell off my chair!!!! Great split second comeback line that I will be repeating the rest of my life! 👌🏼 I grew up from my early childhood watching his films with my entire family, for back in the day we only had 4 television channels and a couple times a month they would show a "Jerry" (Martin- Lewis) movie and we'd all sit and watch together, we'd laugh so hard we couldn't breath and make our tummies hurt! 😭🥵 My faves of all-time are... 'The Family Jewels'; 'The Ladies Man'; 'The Disorderly Orderly'; 'Money From Home' and 'Rock-a-Bye Baby'. I love pretty much ALL of them but those are the best! 🤗 You were one of a kind Jerry (the original) that every other 'comedian' especially all the "goofy" animated ones that came after you were inspired by. I totally cried when you passed as you have gotten me through some of my most darkest days in my life, there will FOREVER be the most joyous laughter in heaven. Thank you so much sir 🫡... God has now “rest you in paradise”. 🕊️🙏🏼
Buddy Love was the ultra cool, very cocky young Jerry Lewis! I think he was Jeckyl and Hyde himself, crazy and funny but sometimes serious and nasty when the mood took him. Still, an incredible guy, very sharp and clever, unbeatable expression, I still watch his old films.
Great segments !! I love and respect Jerry more than I like him . I don't mean it in a cut down way . I didn't realize just how much he did until I watched a doc on his life done just before he passed . An AWESOME DUDE and amazing man .
The '82 Jerry is amazing. He could turn it on when he wanted to--or maybe better to say he turn off all the tiring, boorish behavior when he felt like it. He's really funny here. Letterman is also being gracious and letting Jerry riff all he wants to because he knows how good it is. Like when he had Andy Kaufman on, Dave would get let him go, feed him a benign comment or two like Carson was so good at. So altogether a great show business performance!
I have watched a lot of Jerry's interviews and read quite a bit about him. I think this was a brilliant and flawed human who could never tell exactly where "Jerry Lewis" ended and Joseph Levitch began. Interesting person for sure.
I think you are so right. A new, huge biography (The Clown That Cried, published May 2020) will explore much about this legendary entertainer. I suspect it will make painful and also uplifting and fascinating reading. That it has not happened since the 1990s when Shawn Levy's biography appeared and it is a disgrace. He IS fascinating, complex, quixotic, but NEVER boring!
He was mercurial, to say the least. His mood and demeanor changes on a dime a few dozen times here. That’s great for a comedy career, but dealing with him on a personal level might have been difficult.
Very scary the opening about the medical shit. Disappointed me greatly. And I suspect having to entertain people and demands of show business take their toll. But to admit to playing a joke on someone involving their health is NOT OK. I wonder if somehow he was damaged on the circuit with his parents.
@@barbarabrennan1753 He and Dean were always doing stuff like that to each other. Dean once passed Jerry something to smoke en route to a show. Jerry didn't know it was drugs and the others in the car were all laughing at him. By the time they got to the hotel, Jerry was all over the place and felt terrible. Dean realised he wasn't fit to go on, and walked him around outside for a while etc. By the time they did the show, he just managed to pull it off.
Barbara Brennan i agree, how can someone so funny and lovable here in this interview go to bring a bitter human being disowning his 6 sons? I just don’t get it.
Through all the laughs, you could see Jerry was serious. Most comics have a very dark side to their humor, and Jerry was a legend in that regard. Dave was just starting out
His widow and his daughter last year sold in auction all his watches, the watches given to him by Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. .... They also sold his suit from The Nutty Professor and his clown suit.... For my own, I would have given them to a museum.....
@@daniellebourgade8701 It seems as though he wasn't anywhere near as rich as was made out by the end. His boat was sold before he died too. People forget he spent a lot over his long life, often funding his own projects, gave his kids work, was bankrupt at one point paid and for his first wife's care up until he died. He helped many people out, and at 91 he was still forking out. His adult kids were by no means without money, and own the rights to all of his work.
@@daniellebourgade8701 Danielle, I am absolutely certain that his estate was in serious trouble. EVERYTHING had to be sold exceptionally quickly and I feel that his creditors were kind enough never to make this public. Take a look at the interview with the lady who bought his house originally. So many things were left in the house and she made only a few minor adjustments before reselling again with some very personal items still present. This nice lady clearly buys property very suddenly, then moves on and is at great pains to express what a lovely lady SanDee Lewis was. His daughter is always the one to appear to discuss the estate - leaving me to think his widow is too distressed. This may well account for why his sons were left out of the will and why he seemed so careworn and bitter in later life as well as his grievous health problems. Frankly, I think the way in which Lewis was treated was disgraceful. His every move was demonised and whilst he was no angel whatsoever, the wrongdoings of his contemporaries were conveniently glossed over, whilst he was ceaselessly criticised. I hope the future sees his body of work recognised and assessed for what is was and still is - quite brilliant and groundbreaking.
I felt the otherwise. Letterman, who is a wonderful comedian and host), did not appear responsive in the 1982 interview. Too many awkward pauses. All that aside, it’s still a treasure. Thank you for the Jerry interviews!

I don't know why I continue to read comments regarding Jer when there is a high chance that I'll read something awful, but I do. It is my belief that if you truly love someone, you love all of them; see the person in their entirety. Not one of us is perfect and if people cared enough to bother learning about the real Jerry, the man behind the mask, they would discover that he was always the first to admit to mistakes and he owned them. He was very candid in certain books regarding his personal life, as well as his career. He was very honest about who he was as a man. He may have behaved badly for a time, but he during that time was highly addicted to pain killers due to his back injury. He was in such agony for many years, that if not for him hearing his children's laughter, he may have taken his own life. As with any addict, his brain would have been affected by the drugs, therefore his behaviour was altered. Back pain is excruciating ( I myself have experienced it ) and he lived with that continual pain for years. I get cranky when it's that time, or when I have a headache, I cannot begin to imagine how I would cope with what Jer had to deal with. He was highly intelligent and a perfectionist, thus found it difficult to work with anyone that was deemed incompetent. What boss wouldn't fire a person if they consistently failed to do the job they were hired to do? I know of people who adored working with him so much, they appeared in many of his films. Jer fools around in an interview because that's part of the act; if he didn't people would question why. A case of dammed if you don't and dammed if you do I guess. I have no doubt that David knew what he was getting himself into. If he was a nasty jerk, I never saw it. In my life his job was to make me laugh and he did that in spades. My childhood was not the best, so I will be forever grateful for the sunshine that Jer brought into my life through his movies. I was lucky enough to meet him at a show in 2008 and he was magnificent. He invited people to go on stage and he was nothing but kind and respectful. Of course his family saw him differently; to his children he was their father. Perhaps he wasn't the best at being a dad, I couldn't say. I do know that he's not alone, particularly in show business. I saw an interview of Sammy and he openly admitted that entertaining came before his family. It's not great, but Jer is not alone. These stars have a dream and they chase it. There is a reason they say you can't have it all, career and family; they don't always mix well. It saddens me to think that perhaps he wasn't getting along with his boys, whether all or some, but there is always another side to the story. A lot of the pain we feel regarding our childhood is felt from a child's perspective; although now grown, we feel it the same way we did as a child. I had to accept this in order to forgive my mother. Just a thought. I apologise for going on so much, but clearly I love him. I love the clown and I love the man behind the mask. I accept him for who he was; that is what it means to love someone. When a person does treat another badly, I like to look at why. Things are not always what they seem. We should never accept ill treatment, but sometimes, just sometimes, we can show compassion and understanding for the perfectly imperfect. Personally I feel that being able to admit to your mistakes and faults, and take responsibility for them says a lot about you as a person; many people cannot.
You are so right Pammy -Twice bitten Once Shy. Joe Stabile his manager and friend for many years said Jerry was a good father. He married very young and then with sudden fame worked constantly, but his wife said he would fly home between shows when away, even for an hour or so if the boys were missing him. I'm sure they felt they had tough love at times growing up, but he was trying to do it all. Negative ignorant rants seem to be the norm on here lately. Most haven't got a clue about him and for some reason tougher on him than others who behaved far worse. Ironically, people who make such comments don't notice how horrible they themselves come across while accusing him of his behaviour!
It’s nice to put your hero’s on a pedestal but tell me why he abandoned and disowned his entire original family after he remarried and had another child? He had a child out of wedlock with a woman he had an affair with, then he wouldn’t acknowledge her even though she was/is homeless and he wouldn’t lift a finger to help her. Sounds like a fabulous guy.

But this one is not that, he’s on his wits, yes, being a dick, but David rolls with it and they get some good bits. Leave it, don’t base your opinions about celebrities on their personal life base it on how well they do their job, Jerry Lewis’s job is to be funny and this is funny. Gaudy outbursts can still be funny, Gottfried, Kinison, all those disgusting bits on Howard Stern’s show. You know what this is stupid comedy is subjective, that’s all.
@@thepoltergeizzt then why did you reply to my comment?
he was great as buddy love.
4:14 That is a tremendous flame coming from what appeared to be a regular lighter. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So funny here too ! : ruclips.net/video/LgaTyuBBU7E/видео.html 🤣
Massive talent, Jerry was.
This is within the first year of his show and probably the last time he truly lost control of an interview. Jerry Lewis just used him and Letterman at this point was so respectful he went with it.
Jerry "just used" Dave? "Just used" him? I'm equally baffled and diverted by your characterization.
Oh my gosh, the short bit at @23:43 where he gets all philosophical is hilarious! I'm going to memorize it and use it on people who are all full of themselves. It's an obvious gag, and he does it so perfectly.
Every time I need a quick laugh, I put this on. Thank you, Don. :-)
Such an original. Each joke and pratfall was carefully choreographed and made it seem so spontaneous and fresh. Man, will I miss Jerry Lewis ❤️😔.
Jerry was an arrogant jackass.
So strange & awkward.
Hadn't been funny since the 60s.
Really?, it felt like he was never going to end, or start
Our culture was so much more subdued and natural back then. Now it's totally hyped which sells more with the added benefit of hindering the public's ability to think rationally.
There's culture in America?
888zzz “Subdued” is not a word that I would ever associate with the comedy of Jerry Lewis...

Jerry laughs at Dave's jokes too, and reacts to Dave's words with great timing. Nice to see that kind of reciprocity coming from guest to host.

My 1st memories of laughing till I cried when I was 4 or 5 yrs old .Jerry Lewis, legend
🤓 Can you remember which movie that was ? Or what bit or scene ?
Legend for what for joking 🤔😆
Jerry Lewis was a genius. Virtually everyone who dealt or worked with him said he was very hard to deal with, but successful, wealthy & talented people usually are. Notice he's almost chain-smoking & coughing in 1982, and only 2 months later he had a heart attack. Martin Short nailed it when he says to do a good impression of him you act like you're sucking on a lozenge. RIP Jerry.

The water bit was hilarious...don't ask me why. It's just good to laugh and innocent stuff too,
Absolutely love Jerry Lewis! So funnuy and so smart!
Dave just could not lock in on Jerry's wavelength... and it's not about speed Carson was slower but got it... it was about paying attention to the tiny signals.
Spot on
@Daniel S Because Jerry is the guest, makes for better interview, Jerry is the clown, Dave is straight man.
Man, you can tell how the Writers of the Simpsons got their inspiration for Krusty the Clown. All those similarities & references.
Krusty is most definitely Jerry...as a Jew it's hilarious...the older generation was the greatest generation.
This just blew my mind. I can't unsee this now.
This is so awesome. Two legends Jerry and Dave!
17:15 to 18:15 This is what JERRY LEWIS make a SUPERSTAR !!!
GOAT.... Hands Down. Many actors learned how to do comedy from Jerry, but none can ever be him. ;)
jerry had such a funny laugh:)
18:45 That film with French actor, comedian and director Pierre Richard never got made. Pierre Richard said in an interview he and Jerry had "talked" about making a movie together. Never happened. Pierre Richard payed a moving tribute to Jerry Lewis when he died.
Fantastic. Legend. Will be missed.
Even though Jerry became difficult, this still brought tears to my eyes.
Try and RIP, Jerry.

LMFAO 😂🤣😂🤣😂 I fell off my chair!!!! Great split second comeback line that I will be repeating the rest of my life! 👌🏼
I grew up from my early childhood watching his films with my entire family, for back in the day we only had 4 television channels and a couple times a month they would show a "Jerry" (Martin- Lewis) movie and we'd all sit and watch together, we'd laugh so hard we couldn't breath and make our tummies hurt!
The first visit is certainly one of the best talk show appearances I have ever seen.

Holy cow what a wild ride!
The Master Of Laughter!! He made Silly an Art Form!!
Agreed, David hangs in there but no one could touch Jerry's improv talent!
Robin Williams?
Dave was just starting out
I hope Jerry Lewis' watch goes to a museum. It was such an enormous, defining part of the man.
His widow and his daughter last year
sold in auction all his watches, the watches given to him by Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. ....
They also sold his suit from The Nutty Professor and his clown suit....
For my own, I would have given
them to a museum.....
