The Glock Gen 5 Pistol Review. Glock Gen 4 was introduced in 2010, so it's been 7 years since the last major upgrade. Taking most of it's que's from the new FBI Contract 17M, the Glock Gen 5 Model 17 & 19 have a lot of upgrades that we're taking a look at, plus some flaws as well.
Big thanks to Gun Por Deals for sending the pistol for the T&E and their Sponsorship of the channel.

CORRECTION: The New Marksman Barrel is Hexagonal and not standard Lands and Grooves. Very little info on the Barrel and I was going on a Reputable Source that was incorrect. Thanks Sootch00
Not "scalloped" but bevelled. Scalloped is like M&P slide serrations.
I said Beveled....
sootch00 Gen 4s already have a "hexagonal" (8-sided polygon) type of rifling. So what seems to be the difference between the Gen 4 barrel rifling from the "Marksman Barrel"?
TheStorm1016 Oh yeah. My bad...I guess they moved from a previous Octagonal to a hexagonal?
sootch00 I like your videos, and you are very knowledgeable, but you said something about the new orange follower that is probably the dumbest shit I've ever heard you say. That new follower isn't to indicate that the gun is empty, it's job is to show the mag is empty. ALWAYS look down and inside the chamber to check for an EMPTY CHAMBER... You probably already know this and it was probably something said off the cuff, but you educate a lot of newcomers, and shit like that could get someone hurt. Thanks for the video, and years of great reviews. Hope you don't take criticism the wrong way.
Bought one, Shot 200 rounds.... it's a glock.... works like a glock. Goes bang when trigger is pulled. If you don't like it don't buy it, and if you do like it... buy it. That simple.
Husky Terra have nothing negative to say about glocks besides the stock sights . Still own 6
KRXWN VXK Well...they are kinda ugly as well...
Aaron Price like it said.... it's a GLOCK... and it does fall into that ugly category.
Husky Terra Lol, yep. At least you not one of those guys that insists Glocks look good haha
Husky Terra Nicely said!
Best part about Glock...you want a Gen 3, they still make them. You want a Gen 4, they still make them. You want a Gen 5, there you go!
Good o like the finger grooves I have a g19c and a g19 gen4 they will both outlive me.
Now Gen 1 for a while.
This was the first glock I've ever purchased and from the perspective of someone who has no experience with the previous generations I think a lot of thought went in to the gen 5 design. It's my every day carry gun and I'm very happy with it
Switching from the sigsauer classic line to glock 5 years ago I can say this: As long as glock keeps going bang when you pull the trigger without jamming I am good.
Always loved your channel for years! You’ve been one of the most honest and courteous reviewer on RUclips. I watch every single video and appreciate your commentary as well as your tenor in presenting a firearm. Wishing you and your family all the best during these trying times.
*_What HE said_*
Gen 3 forever. Works good…lasts a long time! They have to try and make new generations to convince guys that they need a new Glock. Your old Glock is just fine. Funny how they had no finger grooves, then they added them because it made the gun BETTER….now they removed them again. It's all marketing.
Looking to purchase my first handgun and I've decided on the Glock 19--for a first-time buyer, would you recommend going with the popular G3 or should I just go ahead and purchase a generation 5 glock?
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi have you made you’re choice yet
No I haven't actually. I don't think I'll be purchasing my glock within the month--I sadly live in California so there's a few hoops I have to jump through to purchase my first handgun.
Gen3 never fit my big hands.
Finger grooves on 19 Gen 3 do not fit my hands, the humps right in the middle of my fingers. On the 17 they fit.
As a 30 year owner of the G19 gen 2, this is nice. Only needs a set of new sights and a light for an ideal EDC. A good all around pistol. The competition has really stepped up but this brand is incredibly reliable.
Best Glock 19 GEN 5 review on RUclips.
Thank you for this update. It helped me immensely in making my recent Glock purchase.
Used to carry a Gen 4 G19 for work and I loved it. Really excited to check out the G19 Gen5. Great review sir. Stay safe.
The look of love in this man's eyes when he talks of his glock. Very good video
Just bought one today! Can't wait to test it! Will go good along with my glock 17,21,22 and 43.
I love how adding and removing the same features makes it more perfecter.
They're like the Apple of the firearms market.
It’s betterer now
pennywise the dancing clown... That’s the perfect Grammatical Grammar.. Thank you peoples.
Gen 5 is the bestest one yet!
I love it 😎
Love your site; the reviews are detailed, and you tell it like it is without trashing the product.
My question: have you done any reviews on the Polymer 80 kits? I'd like to hear your opinion. Thanks!
@sootch00. Your videos have helped me a ton. You have a great way of explaining things. Lots of tips and great suggestions for those of us that are still relatively new to the firearm community.
Greetings from Germany and thanks for your videos! I love my Glocks and this will be my next, just ordered :)
Best gen 5 review I've seen yet. Thanks
I’d like to see Glock make the Gen 5 with groove/no groove option upon ordering one ... that way everyone’s happy
My problem right now trying to choose I like the groves but the gen 3 doesn’t have the back straps and I like the gen 5 slide and finish better that the 3 if only the 5 had grooves
You're better off buying a better gun.
Thanks for the review . I'm considering getting a gen 5 , but the gen 4 does feel good in my hands even with the finger grooves. But I do like the finish and the changes they made . I don't own a glock yet , but I've always wanted one and I'm going to buy one this winter .do you think it's worth the extra cost or is the gen 4 fine . To me they both feel good . No grooves or grooves will be fine for me , I just want one for my edc and to add to my collection .
The finger grooves just don't fit my fingers. Glad I now have an option.
I just saw some gen 5 Glocks in a gun store today - so I bought a CZ 75 B.
lol, agreed. I'm not impressed with the Gen5
The CZ75 B is an excellent choice : )
LOL
capq57 haha
Love the cz75 platform. Even most of the clones.
Thank you for the video sootch00, very insightful. Excited to get mine!
Great review and I appreciate your coverage of all the new modifications to the Gen V!
Lol how the scalloped slide doesn't match up with the frame up front! Come on Glock
MoreAmerican Preach.
Seems pretty simple doesn't it.
MoreAmerican it's not scalloped, it's beveled. Who gives a shit...about the frame...unless you're staring at it more than shooting it. It's purely cosmetic and really, I'd rather have the extra plastic on the dust cover. I highly doubt this was something the Glock engineers "missed."
Hector Defendi They'll do what Glock always does. Fix it in the next generation, 5 years from now.
It shows a huge lack of attention to detail.
Awesome video brother 💪🏼 Got my first handgun two days ago (which was this gun) and to be honest I didn't know anything about it nor how good Glocks are or how this gun was. This gun was the first one I ever bought and also the first handgun I ever fired. 😂 But glad to know that I made a really good choice. Thanks man 🙌🏼
If it had finger grooves it would be the perfect gun for me
I got the G19 gen 5 right away because of some good things out of the box with it. I like how they simplified the trigger group and how it has an ambi slide release. I also like how easy it is to completely disassemble it completely. The biggest thing I liked is how they got rid of the finger grooves and went with a straight frame grip. It made everything really nice and my favorite pistol.
If Glock would just mass produce the Vickers Edition RTF2 I'd be happy. Hands down my favorite setup from the factory!
IDK, I'm underwhelmed by the Gen 5 too to be honest. You say the Gen 2 comment is hilarious, but I think it has real merit.
Glock added the finger grooves and called it an improvement on perfection. Now the deletion of the grooves is another improvement. They added the 3rd pin and said the same, now it's deleted again. Polygonal rifling was said to be more accurate due to less bullet deformation and better gas seal, but now this non-polygonal barrel is more accurate and another improvement on perfection.
I hate the finish on the Gen 4 because it scratches way too easily. A harder finish is welcomed, but I wish it was the Gen 3 frying pan finish. The other changes I don't really love enough to move from the Gen 3 and 4 guns that I own and like very much. :/
mannys9130 Preach!!!!
mannys9130 That's the truth i have a gen 2 g22 from the 90s and was hoping to upgrade. For $300 more i can have a gen 2 with a rail and a different barrel? I could dremel my own rail and get a lone wolf threaded barrel and some gen 4 mags and you probably couldn't tell the difference except for the holster wear.
as i recall Glock had to add the finger groves and a couple of other frame mods to allow them to be imported into the country as "target pistols", they would even import them with a plastic bag of adjustable sights in the case and nothing on the gun. the target sights traveled back and forth to Austria and the standard sights or night sight installed in the USA all to skirt import laws.
darangemaster1 I don't think that's correct. I could be wrong, but gen 2 19s were imported without grooves. The full size guns get a smooth trigger, and the smaller sizes get a serrated "target" trigger. You're right about the adjustable sights which are replaced with fixed ones once ashore here. As you see though, the gen 5 in the video is made in Austria, and it has no finger grooves.
eh its been awhile since i got the info prolly the first time i went to glock school. in 98 and recerted ten times or so, doesn't matter in the long run
In addition to the great reviews, great outtakes as well! Thanks!
I’ve seen other people who did reviews on same handgun, but hands down without a doubt ur review is absolutely the best, just like all the reviews you did
Sootch u r the best!
It's beautiful, the color and finish are great, I like the grip better WITHOUT the finger grooves so that's a plus. And it still eats any ammo I put in it. I love the Gen 5
Agreed. It fits my hand better than any of the previous models. Thanks Nancy!
Keeping it 💯. The haters just can’t get over how good the gun is. What more can the gun world want now it’s going to eat everybody’s shity reloads too. Lmfao
Thank you for this nice review. I always like your videos!
Maybe it's my "Perfectly sized for the M1911" Mil-Spec hands, but I actually liked the finger grooves. Always found the Gen 3/4 grip very nice in the hand.
Always enjoy your videos. Just got my Gen 5 G19. 100 rds down range today no problems. And my rear sight was heavy right also.
Love my Glocks.. Will pick one of these up.
Nice review as always. Call me old school, but I'm sticking with my Gen 3's. They've never failed me.
The review was good, the handle bar stache was epic:)
thank you sir!
Great review and thanks for the detailed commentary.
Nice review. Used to have a 22. Have a 35 now for fun. I liked them FOR the finger grooves. Wonder what generation they’ll decide to have finger groove or regular straps that can be interchanged like the back straps? I wonder why they don’t just come with night sights by now.
Glock= the iPhone of the firearm world
Jake Schmidt Honda Civic is a better comparison
Jake Schmidt bullshit... a iPhone is a good expensive top shelf phone... glock is a glock.. its a Honda civic.
iTheGeek but they put the dumb ass finger grooves on there in the first place to try to be special. They don't get much credit for then taking off their mistake.
You get what you pay for.
Best comment of 2017
I Absolutely Love your Channel Brother ! Thank you for All of your hard work bringing Us such Excellent Content and sense of humor. You're very informative and also fun to watch. You are one of my top Favorite RUclips Channels! God Bless You and your Family and keep you in His care My Friend !
This is the best review on the Gen 5 I've found on RUclips. You did a great job with this and I'm subscribing today, Thank you.
I like the look of the Glock 5 for some reason. It sort of grows on me.
There is no Glock 5
New to handguns but does glock tend to slowly roll out different models when new generations are introduced? I'd like a glock 20 gen 5 for the features they've added but I have no clue when I should expect to see them roll out. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I love my g17 gen. 5. I love the ambidextrous slide release, the trigger, and all the little things. I wish they would do that to the 21 in 45!
Good review of the first edition of Gen 5 Glock. Everything you highlighted on this video 2 yrs ago like the front seration, bevel slide not meeting the frame, the cut in the front of the grip - these were all corrected by Glock. That's the kind of a company you can really trust cause they really listen to their customer's complaint.
i would have liked to see a change in the slide serrations , making them alittle more aggressive
The Sights! That is the third review Ihave seen with the Alignment off ! How strange !
Definitely weird. It was the first thing I checked when I picked it up and just laughed.
sootch00 .. Aren't Glocks notorious for shooting a little low and left ...just like your target in this review..... maybe that's why they had the sites moved right?? Awesome review as usual thanks!!!!
Thanks Greg, I centered the sight but didn't adjust it when I got to the range to sight it in. I'll need to carry my sight pusher down next trip and sight it in.
Seen one in my local shop like that. There must be a lot out there.
Ken Edwards I went to one of my local gun shops, they had just got two 19's and two 17's plastic sights and two night sights and all were off to the right!
After your review I bought one today, thanks for sharing.
Just picked one up... My first Glock... I like the grip fit and the way it looks... taking it to the range today... thanks for the video.... good stuff as always....
Sootch, thanks for your content. Did Glock make any modification to the trigger guard? I own several Glocks for several reasons, but damn - that trigger guard pains my middle finger between the 2nd and 3rd knuckles. Seems like they’d address that to keep their customers from taking a Dremel to a $600 gun.
Don't hold it so tight maybe?
Got to love the sound of steel targets.
I picked up a 19 Gen 5 today. Very excited to try it out tomorrow at the range. Great video, sootch.
Ok this is 4yrs old...my Gen 5 19 ( purchased 9/21) did have the front serrations. Also my slide in sunlight almost has a burnt bronze tone...very cool.
Got the glock 23 gen 5. I was under the assumption that it was just the same as other generations. And while the saying still goes "a glock is a glock." I must say there are some great features that they added. The dual slide release is really nice, the new texture while not game changing is definitely different. I think it changes the over all feeling of the gun. If you haven't shot prior generations and you buy the gen 5 as your first glock, you probably won't know any better. But as someone who's shot nothing but glocks since I was a little kid, I can tell you the subtle differences were worth the extra cash.
After the Gen 3's.......if they wanted to improve the Glock, they should of just took the hump off the back of the grip, put metal sights on the gun,and maybe take off the finger grooves........and thats it
Exactly.
Concierge place, and maybe a steel pin for the ejector assembly. Stop.
I happen to like my finger grooves. I did suggest to Glock awhile back, how about intrerchangable front straps, one with finger grooves and one without finger grooves. Problem solved. Maybe that might be a gen6. LOL
Nice review. I like the absence of finger grooves on the gen 5. That's the main reason I've stayed with my gen 2 and not purchased a later gen. What's the price point for the gen 5?
It would be great idea to make sights out of hard rubber or rubberised sights which would serve two purposes 1) aiming 2) reduce an impact when gun is dropped remaining operational.
I'm good with my G19 Gen4
peter yuan Same, I bought my gen 4 last December and I have no intention of getting the gen 5.
Same here. Ive had my gen 4 for a couple years now and no problems. However i picked up a 320C not long ago and i love it
Im a gen3 type of guy
Joshua Channell I agree, gen 3 was wear its at
I hear you, but I’ll buy a gen5 too
Great review Sootch. I went out and bought the gen 5. I love it. I like what you said about Glock not making major changes, people liked the Glock so why change it majorly. The flared, beveled Magwell is better than the standard and the trigger is much better. Finger grooves people complained about in gen 4 videos, I remember that. Glock was even nice enough to send you three magazines and made s barrel more accurate that no one even complained about. Yeah they didn’t flush the frame to the slide but it still holsters easier and that was the point right? Sootch thank you for giving a positive review on this gun because I think they just fine tuned something they made right the first time.
the barrel is actually to make it easier to match the bullet to the gun
Awesome review. Funny and made with a little bit of humor, realy like your reviews. Best regards from me in Sweden
Thorough review, thanks a lot.
I really like the smooth lines of the Gen 5...and the internal mods seem well thought out...
Great vid, as always. I just bought another Gen 4, because it's what I'm used to and I fear change. I do like some elements of the Gen 5, but I'm hoping for some minor refinements in the Gen 6 before I switch-- e.g., better matching of the front of frame to front of slide, etc.
ภึ
I like the finger grooves! My gen4 is also tuned up, and I just like it. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video, My 2022 G19 gen 5 has the front strap lower grip section filled in and the dust cover under the front of the barrel is now matching. Been usin Glocks since the 80s ,Good pistol.
I have to say that I'm not a fan of the finger grooves although I just went in to buy a Gen 3 G19 yesterday. I think one of the big things is that as in a car or a cell phone, some folks might expect a new updated gun model to be radically different. Well, there's only so much you can do with a semi-auto pistol as far as improvements and I'm one of those people who say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it'. My Gen 1 G17 is also just fine. You gotta remember that for those of us who've been around a while, the original G17 took quite a while before it gained respect as a solid, well made pistol, people didn't wanna trust the 'new plastic pistol.' If Glock were to have made the Gen 5 a complete, radical change and departure from the original Gen 1 then they would have to have overcome that same resistance to change they experienced in the mid 80's.
Excellent review. I would love to see front slide serrations. Also, for that size, when it comes to capacity ( 19 rounds) and ergo, the XDM 9 still wins. I like the finger grooves removal. In my review of the G19 Gen 4, years ago, I called it an imposing feature. The barrel changing? Not revolutionary. They are just trying to get the share of after market created by themselves, for offering the Polygonal only version all these years. The magwell enlarging seems to be a problem "to some"already. Not everybody is in competition or LEO. The bottom end of the grip seem to not fit good in medium hands. Well, but the road to perfection is here.... just not quite there yet.
MOS has front serrations, and also got rid of the crappy half-moon cutout.
Great video, helps a lot in my decision making.
Thank you for the video you have definitely help me make my choice on my coming purchase of this Glock
I've carried a Glock 22 for many many years in Law Enforcement and I love my 2 Glock's (both model 22's) I'd like to try the New Trigger in the Gen 5. But, the rest don't trip my trigger at all. I like the finger grooves and I'll keep my 0l' Glocks for another 20+ years I guess.
Just bought my first one of these the other day. Can’t wait to go try it out!
Watching you load magazines from a cartridge box gets my ocd tingling on every one of your videos.
Thank you for your honest review.
Thanks for watching!
sootch00 Quick question subscriber count exploded. lately I've noticed on all RUclips gun channels when I looked at their subscriber count is just through the roof all of a sudden and I like how you pointed out that cut in the mag well was sharp I was wondering about that when I looked at it the first time
Taylor McKay that wasn't quick nor was it a question.
Skates82 it's also piggy backed on someone elses comment just because He (sooch) replyed to it. I can't stand when people do that shit.
I appreciate your knowledge and perspectives
Super happy with my gen 5 and the fact it was only 30 more expensive then the gen 4 was a win win . Way better ejection pattern then my gen 3 none to face like people who obviously haven't shot the gun say... Also super happy with the stock trigger huge improvement.
Just ordered mine - picking it up Saturday. Really psyched to try out the 5th gen G19
Just picked up my Gen 5 19 ordered with factory night sights and found the the front angle of the frame now matches the front angles of the slide, just like the 19x.
I'm picking mine up Tuesday. Along with an fnx 45 tactical!, can't wait to try them out! Thanks for the video
Matt Perry you'll love the fnx! I just got my gen 5 today and I enjoy it so far!
Thanks Matt, Sounds like you have excellent taste in Guns : )
The FNX is a blast. You'll love it!
I knew the barrel on this gun was different the minute I took it apart and looked down it lol no other outside info needed
Just switched to a Glock 19 gen 5 from my 1911 and I love it! It’s taking some time getting use to no manual safety but it’s just making me be more cautious and safe with my new firearm. Love it!
Very good video, i liked it. Thank you for very detailed description!
Another great review. The side-by-side comparisons are helpful.
Thanks Kim!
I like glock
Still fine with my gen1/gen3 hybrid G17
Quality presentation with all the points hit. I have the Glock 19 Egn 5 on my future purchases.
Great review. You have convinced me to finally replace my Gen 1 model 17. And while I am at it I may also replace my Zune with something a little more up to date.
This is definitely one of my favorite videos of going over the gen. 5 Glock 19 so far. Very informative, detailed, and great video quality. Keep up the great work, sootch00.
I got the opportunity to go try this Glock 19 Gen 5 yesterday. Not to mention it was also my first time shooting anything in general. It was so easy to handle, had a good weight to it, and I don't know if it was beginners luck or what, but wow, was it accurate as hell. We are looking to purchase a firearm especially with everything going on. This is definitely at the top of our list.
This is my first gun after 48 years of pushing off buying one. Got lucky at a Cabella's. It feels so right in my hand and not at all intimidating to shoot. Great Vid.
Thank you for this great and detailed review!
good overview !
Thanks Mike! So was yours my friend.

Good crisp trigger..buuut I'm gonna swap it with a wheaton trigger...the sights are much better..buuuut I'll be swapping those out..lol
*every Glock lover
Leme just swap out half the key components to make it decent
@@Darkpara1 make it unreliable
thanks for video Don , good honest review ! and of course the outakes !! i have said many times how I love them and you said "always lots of material for that"! THUMBS UP ! thank you again Brother
I'm new to Glock and glad I got one of the later Gen 5s with the cosmetic "upgrades" (no front grip notch, slide nose & frame match, front serrations).
I have the Gen 5 and my son the Gen 4. The trigger feel is an upgrade but I wouldn’t say night and day difference but noticeable. A great piece of engineering and improved finish on the slide.
i notice they beveled the frame with the slide on the glock26 gen4, how do they forget to do that for the gen 5 lol
Albert3492 they are starting to get lazy
Thanks for the great review. What ear protection do you use, sir?
EXCELLENT review! I am going to pick one up soon. Just moved to Kentucky from Texas. The Glock is legendary and I really love the engineering. Even "bone stock" it is a great weapon. Cheers.
They really missed the boat by not putting front serrations on the Gen 5.
Allen Arrick Not really, they will sell a ton, release it with front serrations and still make a killing.
The bevel cut on the front serves as great front slide serration on my G17 G5
I agree I feel the Gen 4 FS line was more innovative than the Gen 5!
Personal preference on how you wrack the slide.
That'd make it even uglier
