Two Years Sober - How did it feel going 24 months with No Alcohol?

  • I have been two years sober today! I can't believe I have gone from being a heavy daily wine drinker to becoming alcohol-free and never looked back.
I have put together a timeline in this video that shows what my life looked like before I quit drinking and then moves onto my life in sobriety and the two years since quitting booze.
What a wonderful journey it has been since I quit, my hope is that this video will provide inspiration to anyone who is wondering what life is like after you stop drinking.
There is often a false belief that things will become boring and you won't have fun. It can be hard to believe this before you get sober, but it couldn't be further from the truth.
I can still clearly remember what it was like not being able to go one day without drinking, stopping drinking just seemed impossible to me. So to finally break free from the alcohol-trap and now find myself two years into this wonderful journey of self-discovery is just fantastic.
When I look back at the photos of my life before I quit, they make me cringe, I will never go back to being that person and will continue to move forward with momentum.

One day at a time is a depressing AA way of looking at staying sober. Just be happy you don't have to poison yourself anymore and happily live your life, free.

I'm 2 years sober have ADHD and have had it all my life,I'm 48 years old,I'm am recovering Heroin addict as well,2 years off Smack,I'm on a opiate substitute for not relapsing I also have a lot of physical stuff, had a back op,disc cut out,i still have damaged nerves in left leg and herniated discsand terrible gout which I never had when using or drinking,I used to play profffesional football for 2 different clubs then after that became one of the best traders for 10 years, what is mad my mental health and physical stuff has got worse as i hot older, anyway Congrats on your Sobriety 🎉🎁,I am in 12 step fellowship but I do use all tools that I find helpful to me,ive worked in recovery field for 10 years but felt completely burnt out and i relapsed after 9 years clean,im not blaming them or feeling self pity just was how it went,i actually for a long time hated and resented addicts and Alkies for a long time even though i was one myself 😂

Thanks for sharing your story Simon, its given me a feeling of hope that I can get back to sober ways. I done 5 months sober earlier this year from 1st of January onwards, but fell off the wagon again at the end of May and the last 3 months have been a spiral out of control. Day one today, hopefully I dont slip this time. Cheers.

Thanks Rustin - well done for getting re-focused, the key is in your mindset, instead of feeling like we are being deprived of something it is vital to understand how much we gain and let go of any false beliefs that alcohol will add something positive to our lives. Wow- that photo of the day after empty cans and bottles gave me a visceral reaction of disgust and pain. But the good news is that I’ll never have to collect empties after a drinking session again now that I’ve quit! No more gross ashtrays either. Not drinking is the best thing I’ve ever done, it just gets better and better!

I knew a lot about your story, Simon, as I have read your book over and over, - but it was great seeing the photos and hearing your voice. It made it all so real and has given me strength to carry on with my own sober journey, which started on the 1st March this year! Haven't touched a drop since, and can you imagine how much alcohol I WOULD have been drinking during this lockdown, if I hadn't given up when I did! Many congratulations on your two years of sobriety, Simon. Keep up the good
work! Many, many thanks for your help.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and showing those pictures to make it more lively. Congrats!!!!
I'm at day 23 today, I've joined Annie's Alcohol Experiment and I am truly so grateful first of all that you and Annie exist and second that I survived my heavy drinking of 20 years, which is a miracle (as a woman especially), looking at my consumption levels. I'm so angry at society sometimes because now alcohol seems like the most stupid thing to do.... also idolising alcohol like as if it was some magic potion.. like you, I feel so ashamed of my own ignorance. It is as if I've awoken from a comatose dream I was in for the last 20 years. 2020 and 20 years!!! This year is gonna be my year of change!

I was secually molested when I was 9 and have childhood trauma, I have ADHD, I run marathons and sabotage my races with alcohol, I turn every event into an alcoholic event, I am tired and bored with myself and just listened to Annie Grace's, This naked mind.
I've tried to quit so many times but have failed. The parallels between you and myself are astonishing. The main difference is that I'm still drinking.

It's unreadable because your whole persona/character was about being a massive p. head, I look at people that do that and think ( Iused to think this even before I was sober btw) "man he's never gonna be able to stop, he's gotta live up to the character he's created", whats funny is that now you're whole character is built around being sober, it's really great to see

I basically drank and drugged myself into severe depression, and finally, out of desperation, stopped drinking, doing drugs and smoking cigs. In just under 3 months my depression has disappeared and I’m happier than I’ve been in my whole life. I’m getting my whole life turned around.
