  • Does alcohol cause depression? Can drinking cause anxiety?
    Is alcohol making you depressed or causing anxiety? Maybe you think alcohol helps relieve depression and anxiety?
    Is there a link between alcohol and depression? Is alcohol the fuel on the fire of anxiety or does it help ease the anxious feelings?
    These were all questions I asked myself when I used to drink. I was a heavy daily wine drinker, I would get through 1-3 bottles every single night and I drank like this for over twenty years.
    I truly believed that alcohol helped ease my anxiety and made depression go away, I also thought that drinking helped me relax, yet my moods were always low, I was irritable, snappy and my moods swung like a pendulum most of the time.
    My life felt as though a dark cloud of misery followed me around most of the time, all I wanted was to be happy but I had no idea how. Everyone else seemed to laugh, smile and have joy in their lives yet I felt as though I had an emptiness inside of me.
    Eventually I realised that alcohol was a big part of my problem...
    I finally learned that I was holding onto false beliefs, but to me, they were totally true, until I realised they were completely wrong and were holding me back.
    My beliefs included:
    "Alcohol helps me relax"
    "Alcohol helps my anxiety"
    "Alcohol eases my moods"
    "I don't feel depressed when I drink"

    If this magical substance was relaxing me and helping my mental health, how come over the years my anxiety and feelings of depression had got worse and my moods had become darker? What was the truth about alcohol, depression and anxiety?
    The fact is that alcohol is a depressant which can dull our senses while we are drinking, but after the effects have worn off it has been scientifically proven to cause both anxiety and depression. The day after we drink we can find anxiety and depression begin to sky-rocket and we need to drink again to ease the uncomfortable feelings and emotions.
    It becomes a vicious cycle - I was drinking daily, often 2-3 bottles of wine each night.
    Now I am sober I talk openly about my mental health and how alcohol made it so much worse. In this video I discuss how my anxiety has faded to almost nothing since I chose to stop drinking and my moods are the best they have been since I was a child.
    If you drink alcohol regularly and suffer from anxiety, whether that is social anxiety or general anxiety, or, if you find yourself feeling depressed or in low moods most of the time, you need to watch this video.
    When I discovered the link between alcohol, anxiety and depression I felt like I had found a big piece of my mental health jigsaw. The more I learned, the more at peace I became as I worked on claiming back the power that drinking had taken over my life.
    You can claim back the power and will likely be able to make significant changes to the way that depression and anxiety feature in your lives by quitting alcohol.
    If you are unsure where to start when it comes to stopping drinking for good make sure you watch the other videos on my RUclips channel to set you on the path to freedom.

    I'm not a heavy drinker but I love going out with friends on weekends & I usually end up getting smashed. I believe I'm pretty strong willed. I quit smoking just like that with my sheer will in 2014. I've never gone back to smoking again. But I've never actually quit drinking. But today at 42, after a great night, I feel like shit everytime the day after. I become depressive & anxiety sets in for about 3-4 days after. Falls in line exactly with how u described it. I don't believe I'm a bad father to my wife & 3 kids but I want to be a better person & I'm thankful for this video. Its given me a sense of confidence & reassurance that I'm on the right path but complete abstinence from alcohol is pretty hard. I find it harder than quiting smoking. Definitely gonna try harder. Thank you.

    For me, alcohol seems particularly sneaky because on the hangover day I actually feel OK mood-wise but the days following I notice depression/anxiety, etc. Because of this delay, it has taken me a while to associate the low mood with alcohol.

    Hi Simon, I have worked in the field of addiction for the last 20 years. Convincing people that alcohol CAUSES depression and anxiety rather than alleviating it, is a massive obstacle as many only think of the short term relief . Its the GABA/Glutamate mechanism in the brain that leads to the severe anxiety, sleepless nights and racing mind. As the glutatmate spikes after the excessive GABA release, it releases adrenaline and cortisol which are, of course, stimulants. Thanks. Liam from Cardiff

      I drink at night because it finally helps depression and anhedonia, but next day no motivation and the world is zapped of joy, then that night i'm good again after a couple drinks, i just quit smoking for three months, but now i'm going to cut the alcohol down, i not sure how i'm gonna make it, i'm fighting low testosterone too so already lacking joy and motivation, scared i'm going to feel even more dark.
      I've quit for a couple months here and there, but i still had cigs, now i'll have nothing for dopamine.

    Personally speaking, I’ve on and off dealt with mental health issues since I was a teenager, nearly 30 now. Life is difficult, I appreciate the social aspect of drinking, I really do… but my mental health has been having a on and off, perhaps the most difficult road personally speaking since November and because of that, just taking out the alcohol and starting with that for awhile is worth it to me… I don’t expect it to be a cure all, but hey 👋 I do have hope that maybe it may significantly improve my mental health after a month, maybe after 3 months. If I got significantly better after 1-3 months, not saying I’d quit alcohol forever… but I’d consider it at this point in my life.

  • @serenitygoodwyn
    @serenitygoodwyn 3 года назад

    It's worth noting that depression doesn't always manifest as a low mood. Sometimes it can appear as a feeling of numbness. I've suffered depression for most of my life. I'd been asked by doctors repeatedly do you feel low, to which I would answer 'no', have you lost your apatite, to which I would answer 'no' so I didn't get a diagnosis. One day a smart doctor asked me how I felt, to which I replied 'nothing, sometimes angry', he asked me how my appetite was, to which I answered 'ravenous, I can't stop eating, I don't know what's wrong with me'. I have what is know as atypical depression, it's less common, but not uncommon. Those who experience bipolar type 2 (which I was eventually diagnosed with) are much more likely to have atypical depression, although most people with atypical depression do not have bipolar. It is worth noting though that those with bipolar II two have a 70% chance of alcohol or drug misuse, as a means to self medicate. Bipolar II tends to go misdiagnosed as recurrent depression for many many years as the the hypomania is much less obvious, can even be beneficial, compared with the mania of bipolar type 1. Unfortunately, antidepressants can make bipolar I or II worse so this misdiagnosis is an issue. Also, continuing to drink makes achieving a stable mood for someone with bipolar almost impossible in my experience.

    • @besober
      @besober  2 года назад

      Thank you so much for your insightful comments! This is really helpful to know. I'm so glad you have the medical care that you need to deal with such a complex health issue.

      @@besober Thank you. Although unfortunately the medical care didn't help. The medications although they somewhat worked the side effects made my other conditions worse making life unbearable. However following a ketogenic diet was a total game changer and I now manage the bipolar and the other medical condition without medication as a result. So happy ending eventually.

    Ive been binge drinking heavy almost every weekend since 18. At the most I'll go 2 weeks without any of it. Just turned 41 now and for most of my adult life, due to my life style been depressed and anxious all the time. Havent been happy at all, my mind always in a bad place with some moments of calm maybe. The drink with friends has always been a temporary means of escape for me while drunk. Takes me away from my head for that small bit of time. Then back to reality the next day, hungover, depressed, anxiety. Back to normal basically.
    This coming Sunday, it will be 5 weeks for me. Its slightly better but still get really bad days like today. So just wondering will it get better from here? 🤷‍♂️ i need peace in the mind.

    Alcohol really does cause anxiety. When I'm hungover I won't talk to anyone. Fear of what they think. So I just stay away so no one can smell beer on me. You have to remember that alcohol is a drug and all drugs have to have some kind of 'upside' or nobody would by them, with alcohol the 'upside' is a 45-60 minute dulling of our senses and loss of inhibitions, after that it tends to be followed by negative consequences. When we remove alcohol the joy returns to activities that have lost their sparkle, it takes time, but it happens.
