Pistol Recoil Control like a Monster | Episode #47

  • Mickey does a deep dive into pistol recoil control for beginner to advanced shooters. Faster follow-up shots comes down to good mechanics. Your grip, arms and body stance are the keys to managing the recoil to keep your pistol on target. A tight enough grip can even overcome sloppy trigger action, (i.e. slapping the trigger).
Mickey’s teenage daughter Lucy comes on as a guest to demonstrate these same basic techniques of recoil control with a full size pistol, the Walther PPQ.

I’m 25 and purchased my first gun just the other day. Glock 43. I’ve been told for quite some time that it would be smart to carry, as I’m a petite female but I was always afraid of guns. Although I am starting to realize just how crazy the world can be. Needless to say, I love my pick! Beautiful pistol. I’ll be taking a cpl class here in a few weeks, but glad I came across your channel. You’ve taught me so much I didn’t even know I needed to know! My parents were never ones to own a gun, so it’s a new world for me but a world I really want to experience and learn as much as I possibly can. I’ve been to the range about 4-5 times now (thank god I have a brother who is interested and knowledgeable in this area as well) and I must say, I love it. Growing up I had this terrible idea how guns were “bad”. It’s crazy how much you really learn and start to realize how wrong that idealism is the older you get, with a mindset of your own. Thank you for constantly sharing your knowledge! I look up to you a lot in a way I wasn’t able to with my father. God bless, and thank you again!! Back to studying your channel I go :)

On thing I'll add to this older video...the part at the end with the orange is the most instructive part. It shows the simple mechanics behind what he is talking about. As a martial arts instructor for over a decade, many similar simple mechanical things can be 'fixed' and all of a sudden something works a lot better. The trick, is that its HARD to see your own mechanics! Taping yourself at the range can help, but only if you know how to correctly evaluate what you see. But what really helps is taking a class from a good instructor! They can see what you cannot.

Followup -- I took my XD9 to the range today and worked on implementing the techniques in this video. I'm nowhere near 10 shots inside 4" at 5 yards in less than 3 seconds, but I did shoot the absolute best that I have ever shot, and this was only my 3rd time after a layoff of at least 5 years. I was even complimented by the RSO on the tightness of my groups, especially at 5 and 7 yards. More work is necessary, but I'm excited.

Love this channel. Very informative. Purchased my first firearm 1 month ago, G44 and practice 2-3 hours daily, 500-1000 rounds each time, starting with with .22 amo. I watch your videos every day after I get home from the range when I need to diagnose my mistakes. The improvement has been impressive and quick thanks to your help! Purchased my 43x 9mm today and fired it with the same accuracy as I do firing my G44 .22. It feels amazing, especially being a young, petite female with no previous experience who grew up somewhat biased against firearms (my position has changed), I also feel much safer and confident knowing my shots are accurate. I appreciate your videos!

1:45 For new shooters, it’s true that you want to grip the handle high, but make sure you don’t grip so high that the slide actually contacts the top of your hand when it cycles after the gun fires. Not only can this prevent the slide from fully cycling and cause a failure to extract the spent round, but the slide can actually slice your hand as it cycles. It tends to be a self correcting problem but better to save the bandaid for something else.

    • @CarryTrainer
      @CarryTrainer  4 года назад

Having worked with quite literally 1000s of people, that's not a huge issue. It takes quite a bit. The slide isn't some light saber. In fact many great competitors and shooters have track marks across the web of the hand.

Became a first time gun owner just a week ago. Went for a 9mm (Beretta P92) for stopping power and paid for a professional trainer to learn grips and body stance. Wow.. Mickey totally flipped what I learned on its head. No more 60/40 or 70/30 clap-trap for me. Center masses all the time now at 3, 15, and 20 yards. Subscribed! Going to binge watch ALL his videos and apply every week at the range. Incredible trainer. His daughter truly dispelled any myths about tinier frames being able to handle hand cannons like the Walther PPQ. Great father daughter relationship! The family that shoots together survives together hehe.
Me and the misses are much more satisfied with the results. "I want a 9mm and trash this 22!" the wife exclaims after seeing his daughter get some in the 4" target. Double tap, and triple taps for now. Working on 10-15 speed shots eventually. Please keep them coming. I'm truly amazed!!

I've been shooting at a local range a few times each week, but only for about the past 6 months. Using the Weavers stance, I can put most rounds in a 4 inch target at 5 yards while firing in groups of 2 or 3 shots, with a pause in between each shot to settle in on the target. I watched this video this morning, and went to the range to give it a try. Amazing difference! The first time out trying it, I had the same level of accuracy as when using the Weavers stance, but was firing off rounds so fast that the range safety spotter told me I was making him nervous, and asked me to slow down.

It was really helpful to see a smaller lady shoot with great recoil control. It will help to easy the anxiety of my small frame daughters and wife as they learn to shoot. It also has helped this dad to have more confidence that my daughters will be able to handle a 9mm with proper training. I appreciate that you do not assume your listener knows all the safety precautions. Many do not. Well done!

Summer before my daughter went to college, I took her to college campus and taught her about situation awareness. Rode all the trains in DC. Talked to her about body language. During first year of law school we stated shooting monthly all 3 years of law school.
She got her CCW. Proud of my baby girl.

    15 at the X
    19 at the 10
    11 at the 9
    3 at the 8
    1 at the 7
The last shot was on the sillouette touching the 7 line.. I had to pull one to avoid a perfect score..👍🏿👍🏿.. this stuff works

John Smith Thank you. She knows what to do. Every time I mention a gun, I tell her about the trigger finger, I tell her NEVER to point the weapon at something she isn’t willing to destroy and all that. She know most rules by heart. I never hand her a loaded gun. Always with no mag and see how she handles it

And anticipate the shot and jerk the trigger , now its smooth all the way to wall and through

You always have great points that are so valuable to any shooter whether new or using it as a tool for work. It is especially useful to me to see you shoot as I only have one eye as well. So it takes away any excuses I might think I have! Keep'em coming brother.

...All 'bout yer grip and posture, man. Especially for something as itty-bitty as 9mm, +P+ Underwood feels pretty much like S&B. Even so, recommend shooting +P FMJ if your duty/SD ammo is +P. Aguila makes reasonably cheap +P and (much to my surprise) chronos roughly identically to Speer TMJ +P (same bullet mass).

Hush puppy isn't +p, and is advertised as "soft shooting." It has very little recoil in a full size handgun. I use it in USPSA.
