"We have no songs for evil times"
Procceds to sing the most sad and hopeless song of all time
Well this is only one verse, the rest fits the tone of an adventure more like Bilbo's
@@guesswhatthisisnotmyrealna9510 Adventure?? No, Tolkien wrote this lyrim as an ode to his days in WW1, where good brave young men would march or charge to their deaths at a moments notice. In this context, the song is still very sad yet hopeful over all.
i dont think its a sad song.. mist and shadow.. cloud and shade... all shall fade(all dark times come to an end)... also home is behind the world ahead(signalling growing up and moving on) however the way of his singing made it seem like that... the song had lyrics towards a brighter side i guess
@owly 987 No I havent yet, but I probably should. To all the others, I guess you miss the; "...yet *hopeful* over all." part of my post. Yes I know they were sad and dark times but they were hopeful for a brighter future to come home too.
This is only a portion of a very cheerful walking song from the fellowship of the ring book, and some words are changed to make it darker

Well the character it was indeed
Sometimes I wonder if Peter Jackson just watches this movie and thinks, “How tf did I make this absolute masterpiece?”
You're probably talking about the films, but billy boyd wrote this song himself I'm pretty sure (with help from Peter and others to get lyrics closely related to the source material in the books)
@@ayant138 he didn't write it, its from the book. Its in the early part of Fellowship of the Ring, at least thats where I remember it.
Well, let's say he has made a great job not ruining one of the most amazing books ever written. To make a film from a book, is never an easy job, and he did perfectly. But we have to give credit to the real genius, mastee tolkien, the creator of fantasy
@@DDIISSEE I remember sone interview where Peter Jackson said Billy wrote it the day before. Maybe it was just him figuring out how he was going to do his part in the scene or something like that I'm not too sure. I think maybe I just heard it wrong and Peter said something completely different in the interview lol
@@ayant138 I just know the lyrics of the song are from a poem/song in one of the early chapters in Fellowship of the Ring. Maybe Billy came up with the melody and all that.
Peter: So, in this scene, you eat.

oh my god that's brilliant :D
This is probably the most heartbreaking scene in the whole movie: it is when the horrible reality finally sinks in for the once cheerful and carefree Pippin. The song he sings is not one for evil times, but rather one he used to sing in brighter days back at the Shire, now at risk of fading away forever. At this moment, he lets go of his childlike positivity and succumbs to fear and hopelessness. It is the loss of his innocence. Boyd was brilliant in this one!

what happened to pippin pls tell me T_T doing research by myself is complicated haha
+Atikah M dude you've got to watch the trilogy. It's absolutely phenomenal in my opinion. They are long, but there is so much development and backstory and lore building. Plus the battle scenes are quite incredible

Atikah M Read the books as well. They're much better than the movies.(books almost always are. It's the nature of books) If you do read them, I suggest starting with the Hobbit :)
Pippin singing legitimately caught me off guard and I actually started tearing up when I first saw that scene, cuz you can just FEEL the toll this journey has taken on him.
And that's one reason why, after Frodo departs to the Gray Havens, he returns to Minas Tirith
Is this only in the normal version because I watched the extended versions and I don’t remember this
The actor who plays him came back and did the only thing I enjoyed in the Hobbit movies and that's his battle.song in 5 Armies
I always get chills when he sings "to the edge of night". This scene is just perfect.
Same when I saw it as a kid and as an adult my reaction is still the same. This was such a good scene
Pippin's face at the end of this is powerful, and not just because of the obvious overlay of needless sacrifice. He has constantly screwed up from the moment he left the Shire. He was an instigator of the meal at Weathertop which led to the Ringwraiths, he alerted the Goblins/Cave Orcs to their presence in Moria, he couldn't save Boromir from his fate, he touched the Palantir from Sauroman's tower, and ignored Gandalfs instructions to impulsively swear allegiance to Boromir's father out of a sense of duty to what he had seen, done, and probably not a small degree of guilt and feeling he owed it to Boromir to honor that sacrifice.
And here he is, being asked to perform for the Steward of Gondor's entertainment after watching the second son being sent out on a literal suicide mission. The face at the end of the song is very likely partly due to the fate he feels Faramir is about to experience but is also very likely feeling every poor decision that has led him to this point. No soldier of Minas Tirith would have been asked to sing for the Steward of Gondor because that would be an insult to them. But Pippin is asked and compelled to, and he is realizing that even an oath he swore out of a feeling of responsibility is viewed as nothing but a joke. His specially made tabard and armor a jesters disguise.
Pippin was a constant sabotage for the group. From the smallest things like eating a month's worth of lembas bread to alerting every orc and goblin in the mines of Moria.
@@JBrander eating a month’s worth lembas bread? I forgot about that. Was it in the books?
It’s been a while since I read lotr. Which book was it and when?
@@sylvanprophet752 it's in the movie, can't remember which part but it's the one where Legolas tells them about lembas bread and how one small bite is enough to fill a man's stomach. Merry asks Pippin how many he ate earlier and he said he ate 4 in just one sitting.
But on the bright side some of his foolishness lead to something better ,'
Sounds like this dude fucked up so many things for everyone in this trilogy

It's deliberately meant to be disgusting, to highlight the inner flaws of the character. In that, they made a good choice.
Makes me wonder how many takes they needed to get it right. "Cut! This time, try to get more of a spurt when you bite into that tomato, okay?"
Actually this was the first take. Billy Boyd (the actor who plays pippin) composed the melody for the song all by himself and when he told peter jackson, he wanted to record it without even listening to it. The scene we can see in the movie is the first take.
busra karakoc ilaughed alot at this comment hahahaha

+crazybanana Yeah the song is. But the MCU of Denethor could have been shot 10-20-30 times for all we know :)
This is definitely one of my favourite scenes from Lotr. It shoes the innocence of Pippin, the greed of Denethor, the bravery of Faramir (and his army) and the ferocity of the Orcs
the loss of innocence of pippin
Omg yes
that is exactly what I thought when I heard this song
agree
This is the only part of the movie that is better than original book.
I like to think this is Pippins last ditch attempt to reach the heart of Denethor and that’s why he begins to sob after finishing the song and looking over at him to see he hasn’t even acknowledged any of it.
Of all the analysis on this scene I find this to be the best. He looks at him, and they deliberately show Denethor completely indifferent to what is clearly not just sung, but played up to be a truly haunting and emotional song. Pippen sees this and knows he is lost.
Witnessing Boromir's death took a toll on him. And now he thinks he's gonna lose Faramir too and couldn't do anything to make his only wish come true.
fun fact. Pippin's singing and Denethor eating were taped separately, making sure that Denethor's actor wouldn't accidentally show emotion but instead stayed cold and callous during eating. He literally didn't hear Pippin's words.
Lord of the rings is millions of times better than Game of Thrones

Hello, friend. Long live podrick.
Hi fren
Abner GTZ wow this is crazy 🤯
Hello friend
The way denethor eats makes you hate him even more than you did when he send his son on a suicide mission, faramir and the gondorians rushing into the city and pippin singing, setting the tone and tension perfect. The song ends with the arrows shooting. This might be the best scene in cinema history. I actually mean that.
Most “kings” are snobby and obnoxious and his eating habits emphasize this
@@ottogofast3882 The Stewaaaaaaard - Gandalf says non-condescendly
I agree
To me this shows denethors fall from grace.
@@ottogofast3882 Yes but kings have etiquette they strictly used to adhere to. Eating gracefully and like a decent human was actually a show of status. The way Denethor eats just shows he is no true king in the etiquette area of a king which was very important. A king would NEVER eat in such a messy fashion infront of another person, be them a peasant, a soldier, a steward or even a slave. I mean food splurging everywhere and not wiping your hands would make you look like a neanderthal.
If you look at history, they had very clean eating habits (in the period the series is based on in the real world). They had servants wash their hands for them, they only ate with one hand because the other was the messy hand (ie the hand you wipe your butt with and clean up with) they ate with grace and didn't spill your food or drink everywhere. The Kings that were messy eaters are actually spoke about unfavourably. Like King Henry VIII for example. When people wrote about his eating they said it wasn't pleasant and not just how much and what he ate, but how he ate his food.
So after that word vomit basically, he eats like an animal and not a king which is what makes him so unlikeable even in this scene, it's how he is eating that annoys you the most, not the fact he sent his son on a suicide mission.
Very interesting use of parallels in this scene. The moments where Denethor snaps the bones apart on the chicken (assuming it is chicken) and the impending dread of battle Faramir and his men will face. The noise of Denethor's eating moves from something mildly irritating to something almost grotesque.
Right? The tomato juices running down his chin represent the blood of men about to be spilled forth, and the chicken bones snapping represent the soldiers’ bodies being broken
@@mechadoggy It was a brilliant scene. The visual: Denethor eating like a beast. As you stated: the breaking of bones, the blood juice of the tomato running down his mouth, almost animalistic. Contrast to Pippin's deep sorrow, the lament, all other sound pulled out (the horses galloping into a suicide battle), just bones breaking, slurping on blood juice, and that bitter sweet acapella sadness being Sung. O that scene overtakes the audience!

It's stupid, Denethor in the books is more complex. It's one of the things I wish Jackson did better.
This scene is so well done. It literally makes the viewer sick, watching the ill king feasting, crunching as if he is a monster while his comrades die around him and he takes no notice as Pipin's heart slowly breaks. And as his land and people fall before him, only blood spurts from his lips and no cries of mourning.
Wow, That so absolutely aptly described🤧👍🏽
strong minds say denethor is drinking blood from the fruits.
Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king.
One of the greatest scenes in the entire trilogy...
Indeed. This one and the lighting of the beacons.
And the charge of the Rohirrim.
Along side “my friends. You bow to no one. “ I’m crying just writing those words.
It really is, people hate how Denethor eats in this scene, but it perfectly captures how unhinged he has become.

“We have no songs for great halls and evil times” ... proceeds to sing one of the most harrowing songs in cinematic history
In the movie it’s sad and foreboding, but in the books it’s more joyful, song was written by bilbo
Fun fact: Pippins actor (can’t for the life of me remember his name) worked with the lyricist to make this song up from a poem that Tolkien wrote before the LOTR. Originally the scene was supposed to be musicless as Pippins face grows sadder as Farmir and Gondorians are slaughtered. But he and the lyricist presented the idea to Peter Jackson who said “eh why not?” In one take this was nailed and Peter sent it immediately to editors with the changes in mind
Billy Boyd composed the music and then sang it like an angel. It's been said that after he finished singing there wasn't a dry eye on the film set.
I also heard that Pippin's singing and Denethor eating were taped seperately, so that Denethor's actor would not accidentally be moved by the song, instead staying callous and could as always during the feast.
This has got to be one of the best scenes in movie history. Just spellbinding
It hits me in the feels. You can feel Pippins dispair.
This scene is definitely one of the best. Billy's voice is really beautiful. Especially on 'to the edge of night.' The end was just ... Wow. The arrows going off just before he sings 'fade...' And the close-up of Denethor's mouth, tomato juice flowing from it, representing the blood that's spilling in the battle. Really well thought out. And how heartbreaking it was to see little Pip almost break down in the end. The slow-motion was amazing as well. Sorry for the long comment. I just love this scene with all my heart. It always gives me goosebumps and tears to my eyes.

"Tomato juice representing the blood" Really? We couldn't realize that WTF! What is your IQ? 500 or smth?
It's just stupid. "Subtlety" isn't even a concept here. Nostalgia Critic put it best with big red text flashing "WAR IS BAD" over the top of it. I don't know whether this or Gollum 'tricking' Frodo into 'kicking out' Sam makes my eyes roll more.
This is the crucible moment for Pippin's character. After a less than serious, happy go lucky existence, he finally sees the true peril of the world and how it stands, teetering, on the brink of destruction and the end everything good. Excellent writing by Tolkien and further excellence by Jackson imagining this scene.
Your heart almost breaks for the loss of Pippin's innocence...
I love this scene for so many reasons, but my favorite one is how it's a perfect example of how to adapt a story into a new medium whilst still remaining true to the heart and story of the original. In the book, Denothor asks Pippin if he could sing well, but doesn't actually make Pippin sing for him. Here, that has changed, but it serves a specific narrative and thematic purpose: it sets the tone for when Fairamir rides to his death, forced to by a father who doesn't love him and is actively stuffing his face and having hobbits sing for him as he son is dying. This is also when Pippin finally realized.the gravity of the sitution: if Fairimir, the warrior he was, could do easily die, the rest of them had no chance at life. Besides all this, the change to have Pippin sing made sense. Having him force Pippin to sing makes sense from a character perspective. Making Pippin sing is absolutely something Denothor would have done, but he just didn't feel like it in the book. So I'm addition to being good for the movie, this change is able to capture the story and characters in a way that accurately reflects how Tolkein originally wrote them.
I remembered this scene wasn't in the book because I believe all four Hobbits sing the song together at a different point in the story. However this has to be the one change that's better than the book since the scene in the movie is just sad and beautiful.
I love when movies do something different from the book and still make it work
This song never fails to give me chills.

It's been said that when Billy Boyd sang the song during filming, there wasn't a dry eye left on the film set. It is such a powerful, haunting song that cuts right to the heart.
On the vastness of RUclips there is a short video of how this song was filmed - in one take. And everything is there without music and effects, and it is noticeable that Billy Boyd is very worried, almost crying and singing unevenly, at some point he even stops for a second, doubting whether to finish this "unsuccessful" option or not. But as a result, they did not reshoot anything and left this one take :)
I think I would have liked to see Denethor crying.🤔

The song translated perfectly Pippin's sorrow and feeling of hopelessness.

Pippin: “we have no songs for evil times”
Also Pippin: *makes us cry a river*
The backdrop of Faramir's charge on Osgiliath is so poetic and the way Bill Boyd wells up at the end, almost as if he knows that Faramir hadn't made it. It's easily the best scene in the entirety of the trilogy
I wish they made the song longer . Pippin sings good :)

I don't know if anyone here knows, so I'll just leave this here for education's sake: It is estimated that Pippin is the equivalent of being around 16-18 years old. Hell of way to end a childhood, right?
Finally someone said it. Everyone gives Pippin so much flack for the first two books, but he’s just a rich boi hobbit child that got thrown into all this out of a society that knows no hardship. He’s so flipping cool, but also realistic.

@@ARGhostie aww! ok so since they age differently, 21 for a human would be like 33 for a hobbit... in human years Pippin would only be about 12!!! omg... poor thing...
I come back to this scene so many times. The artistry throughout every layer is impeccable. The singing is beautiful, the song about how even darkness eventually fades away (a hopeful song) but the visuals bring a different meaning out of it as the words line up with the darkness of what’s occurring, the squelching of Denethor’s eating and the cracking of bones and the red juice flowing down his chin like blood as if he’s gorging himself of his people’s sacrifice with every ounce of his uncaring heart, the way that Pippin sobs after he’s done singing as he sees Denethor doesn’t care and suspects that his new friend is likely dead/suffering. Everything from sound design to the visuals to the song/singing, every detail has made this into a masterpiece of a scene. I commend the amount of work that went into making this scene and the movie in its entirety.
When I was a kid I honestly thought Pippin was crying at the end because Denethor finished all the food and left him none.
this scene just destroyed me when I saw this movie

The context of the song from a hobbits point of view would be that no matter what, dark times will pass and overall joy will overpower it, hence "All shall fade". When used in context of the moment, he is kind of twisting the original meaning to say that mist and shadow will consume everything, and "all shall fade".

I know people have been making cracks about how unhinged Denethor is here (and y’all are completely right!) but I love the nuance and poetry of this scene. It really is something else. All of these elements clashing together into one very grim, dark scene that really represents a moment of hopelessness.
Denethor is a broken man who is grieving for one son and is now eating his anxieties away as the other goes off to die. I think him asking for a song from Pippin is like a person with depression consuming lots of media at the same time: any little distraction to get away from the harsh realities of life. And Pippin is trapped to his pledge of loyalty. That look of grimace on his face at the end? He’d rather be anywhere than here, having just delivered that sad but beautiful tune.
I’m not terribly good at analytical comments like these and others have and will make better ones, but I can say that this scene has always really had an impact on me. I think many of us know what it feels like to watch helplessly as someone we know and/or care about destroys themselves and sets aside their responsibilities for little pleasures to distract from it all. Pippin’s humility and softness is an amazing contrast to Denethor’s combined harsh mental strain and gluttony, all while Faramir’s suicide mission is plaguing both their minds in real time. Amazing acting and direction. Truly a work of art, at least to me.

Here I am again, always finding my way back to such moving scenes from LOTR. This is one of my favourites. Boyd's voice and acting here is truly well done. The symbolism behind Denethor's feast, with the snapping/breaking of the bones, the tomato being bit to sound like gushings of blood/muscle being torn and the blood running down his mouth was so perfectly thought out to make you feel the inevitable tragedy of Faramir's company meeting their end. Peter Jackson is remarkable. His vision for Tolkien's work was truly brought to life. I would not have seen any other director being able to do what he's done.
Denethor: Come, sing me a song

Gandalf sitting alone in the courtyard, hopeless and exhausted, knowing Faramir (a young man and promising leader of men who Gandalf has known since he was a boy) was just sent off to his death in a battle that will mean nothing in the overall conflict . . . brutal. Gandalf is trying so hard to help the kingdoms of men prevail and he is failing. You really feel for him here.
Rest in peace Christopher Tolkien 🙏
When I heard this in the hobbit 3 trailer, I literally wanted to cry because I grew up with these movies.
Lord of the rings 3*
jfksjdhodjd hdkfb No, hes correct. It was in the Battle of Five armies trailer.
+PilafiaMadness thanks I was wrong you guys are right 😜

*crunch* MIST AND SHADOWS
This comment made me die laughing! 😂😂😂
here after the LOTR Reunited Apart. honestly had goosebumps when Billy Boyd sang it on that video.
I just ginished wachting lotr and the hobbits
Finished
Absolutely love this scene. It's up there with my favorite scenes out of all 3 movies.
Commenting here before everyone else gets reminded of this after watching Pod sing on GoT
Hear! Hear!
LOTR>>>>>GOT
we're all here
Yesssss literally my first thought
Yes! Me!
I really love this song, it's just so beautiful and his voice is really really good.
He does have a great voice. He actually wrote the song himself in a day or two. The director, Peter Jackson, gave him the words he wanted in the song and Billy Boyd did all the rest.
Yesterday under the bombs sounds I have listened to this song on repeat. It didn't make it easier but... It gave some pease in my heart.
I’m really sorry to hear about that, but I’m glad the song is giving you some peace. I really hope that the world can settle down again soon. I hope that you stay safe, and weather you believe in god or not, I hope that god will look after you.
God bless you Lessa Dorren.
There is always hope

What a brilliant scene in a brilliant trilogy of films. Everything about this scene is pure excellence.
That is one heck of a beautiful voice. Gives me chills every time!
Am I the only one who still years on gets goosebumps from this?! 😍😱
nope
In my opinion, this was one of the most powerful and memorable scenes in film history
Such clarity and soul in his voice. The melody is Beautiful!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Amen!
this scene is phenomenally well done, not gonna lie!!!
why would you lie about that
Came here cause Podrick reminded me of it. I hope they mimick the rest of Minas tirith's siege so that most of our heroes are saved.
That is soooooooo not gonna happen
@@alu4858 Yeah, i think it would be a game of thrones minas tirith version except it's really a very Pyrrhic victory if it's going to be a victory at all...
Prob not gonna be a victory
Welp turned out to be a shitty episode
And thank goodness most of them are saved. Amazing episode.
I saw in the behind the scenes that actor Billy Boyd made the melody himself and made it in only a day or two! because they asked him out of the blue. it's astounding because EVERYONE knows this song. it's just so good, otherwordly haunting, and heartwrenching.
probably the best scene in movie history. im crying and longing for a home i never knew. the power and emotion in this scene is baffling
Pippin's voice is perfect for singing this! I wish they made the song at least little longer!
This scene makes me cry. Always
This might be the greatest scene in all of cinema.
Whoever wrote the song is an absolute legend, but the singer himself is breathtakingly magic! 😲💖🎶
The writer was Tolkien himself. In the book though, the song was sung by all 4 Hobbits, and it wasn't being sung to denathor.
Does anyone agree that we should make a petition to have Billy make an extended version of Edge of the Night just for his loyal and loving fans? Thumbs up if you think so!
His voice is very haunting and beautiful along with the war scenes!!!!
I just finished watching the movies💓
This is just the best song out of the whole movie(s)!!!❤❤❤
This scene is cinema, that’s all 👏
Just met Billy today, awesome guy!
You met him?! How!? Where!? Are you famous too? So jealous! I'm in love with pippin! 💜💜💜
:O LUCKY
He was at a convention, I just waited 1 hour in line to meet him and get is autograph :) I was amazed that he still the exact same voice that he had in these movies!
Alexandre Boucher
only an hour...wow....how long before the autograph session did you get into the line...
TehMomo When I got in line, it was already going.
She never wanted to leave
This is one of the most powerful scenes from this trilogy. Truly a masterpiece...
One of the most beautifully edited sections of the movies. I love how there's no sound other than Boyd's singing until the arrows are released.
We likes this song precious! GOLLUM, GOLLUM!! We likes it veeeery much...
Mr.Gollum I would like to interview you *Holding a microphone with a cameraman behind him*
