Merry has super C3-P0 energy. He's more high strung, more nervous, more neurotic. Pippin is super R2-D2, he's more chill, more apt to get in a bad spot due to recklessness, but is extremely loyal and clever. Also, difficult to understand sometimes.
I think the point about nakedness is really important though, they got a laugh but honestly it is a big theme in the entire world. This scene illustrates both the innocence of the hobbits and the nature of Tom as the master. Compare that chapter with Homeward Bound in Book 3 and the particular loss of innocence of Frodo but really all of the hobbits. Non-sexual love and acceptance, a brotherhood that drew these hobbits, then men, elf and dwarf as close as family is the central theme of the story. Our society these days look at that and say it has to be sexual and homoerotic, the depiction of Aragon's masculinity, the devotion Sam has to Frodo and the love Frodo has for Sam back Gimli and legolas love for each other transcends ancient hatred of each others race.
I agree completely. And I have been afraid of how Netflix can so easily ruin it. I really hate “modern” takes on classic literature. It’s great for a reason. I couldn’t watch the Hobbit movies because I was so disgusted with the first one.
Yeah, definelty not the same sort of nudity as the creatively bankrupt shit that we get now, where 1/4 of the run time of shows is just drawn out garbage soft core porn scenes because its easy and cheap to film two people dry humping in a dim room.
Hollywood has always had this weird relationship with nudity. It's like it's always got to be sexual which means it's always bad. It's like their uncomfortable just allowing people in their natural state so it has to lead to something. It's so stupid.
And they could still take the same values of love and acceptance, wholesome masculinity, camaraderie and everything that make Tolkien's world so wonderful into sex scenes, and nudity, not all sex scenes have to be toxic and exploitative , I think it could be done well depending on the tone of the adaptation and the content matter, but if it feels out of place and done only for shock value I would be the first one to complaint
I think the fear with nudity in LotR is that the show will attempt to capitalise on the popularity of GoT and cosequently won't honour LotR. Graphic nudity and sex scenes are not in the spirit of LotR.

I watched the monologue, went out knowing I had this to look forward to - Stephen and 'hobbits' - even better than I hoped for - Stephen and LoTR is just *pure happiness* - I'm so happy he is happy ❤🧝♂️🧙♂️🧝♀️❤
2 things. First, the context of the nudity is important within Tolkien's work, because the nudity is innocent and non-sexual, when it is almost guaranteed to be sexual in the show. Second, there is a difference between seeing something and reading something.
I don't have a problem with nudity at all, but I actually do think LOTR is an example of a world where sexual tones in general isn't very fitting.. It's all very romantic and epic.. but very far from sexual... It just wouldnt fit the tone of the universe very well.
@@MaMastoast exactly. And as a fairly devote Roman Catholic and theologian, I doubt that Tolkien would very much appreciate his work turning pornographic for ratings. It's sad that the main way to engage casual audiences is just by throwing in explicit material.
@@nathanielroffel4304 I mean I have to disagree with your premise that having sexual content means that it is pornographic... I think it's perfectly fine to have sexual content and I don't think portraying people having sex is inherently pornographic. I don't know where you are from, but I find that many americans are taught to be afraid of nudity and have a very different view of nudity in media than I do... I grew up in the 90's where Danish films(I'm danish :P ) would often have casual nudity and semi-sexual content for films ment for kids.. It wasn't pornographic or a big deal.. To me, it is all about the tone of the universe.. sex is appropriate for a world that is grounded and is ment to feel relateable... Tolkien is epic and grand..fantastical.. it's like folklore.. so having things like sex would feel off.
@@MaMastoast I agree. And yes, I do agree that nudity is not always sexual or pornographic, but the ways that the potential nudity has been presented are similar to that of GoT, which, at times, is extremely pornographic. There is a time and place for nudity, tasteful or not (depending on one's perspective), but I agree with you that this is not the place. Hypersexualization is a scourge on popular media, and it should have no place in this universe, because it is not a component that was ever important to the story. Yes there are intimate relationships in LotR, but the intimacy is not focalized on sex or sexuality, which runs completely counter to modern North American culture. Sex, in a lot of ways, isn't even seen as intimate anymore, which means it has even less of a reason to be there, considering that LotR is about platonic intimacy, friendship, and love
@@nathanielroffel4304 Hmm I think game of thrones has elements of both non pornographic sexual content and clearly pornographic sexual content.. We may differ in opinion here, but as an example; I think the scene of Danaerys being raped by kharl drogo is clearly explicit and sexual but I wouldn't call it pornographic.. it has a good reason to be there and helps us understand the characters and the kind of world we find ourselves in On the other hand, the scene with one of the sand snakes pressing her tits up against the prison bars with the camera lingering on her body is obviously pornographic. My perception of american culture is that they seem to be very much ashamed of it, something to hide and something as innocent as a nude body should be kept away from kids ect... at the same time there is obviously also the sexualisation you mentioned going on.. And I think the two inform eachother. But yea, think you struck a nail with regards to intimacy.. LOTR is full of it, close bonds and relationships.. be it romantic or friendly.. It's more on an a existential level rather than physical.. Similarly we wouldn't expect a long torture scene in LOTR; and while we can certainly imply that torture happens.. it's more about the dread rather than gore.
“There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Ilúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made.”
Very Old Testament. The Catholic mythologizing of Tolkien is more or less what ruined it for me. Angels and saints: we don't need no stinking Ainur. By the by: my father bought the first edition as it came out (fold out maps) and I first read the Hobbit in primary school, LotR by 8th grade. I was a founding member of the Tolkien Society of America and met WH Auden at one of their get togethers. This was before the ACE paperbacks were issued and the exclusivity of the whole world fell apart, but that's not my complaint. LotR is a rousing adventure with mostly 2 dimensional characters in a fight of good against evil. But it's not great literature. Oh, well.
@@davidyohalem629 It explains the magic system, it builds the world and mythos... I'm a massive atheist, but the religiosity of The Silmarillion doesn't bother me at all.
@@AuntieDawnsKitchen I interpret the Holy Ones as analogous to the old testament angels (Lucifer, Gabriel, Astoroth, et al.) I watched the monologue, went out knowing I had this to look forward to - Stephen and 'hobbits' - even better than I hoped for - Stephen and LoTR is just *pure happiness* - I'm so happy he is happy ❤🧝♂️🧙♂️🧝♀️❤
Steven is giddy with happiness, love it!
Dom and billy are literally the best
When the hobbits finally reached puberty.
They become adults when they're about 80 years old, and become old when they reach 120 yearish age..
@@ocal6477 They reach the age of maturity at 33.
@@ocal6477
Dude, what?
They come of age at 33, and Bilbo is an anomaly and one of THE oldest Hobbits ever.
and yet Dominic Monaghan doesn't look any older
@@katy8605
Can't say the same for Billy haha
Fans to Dominic Monaghan -- on the streets
We are everybody
We are everybody
These Gentlemen are absolutely Hilarious!
They need their own show.
Steven just becomes a truly Honest Fanboy when they come out.
Great interview
@@nathanielroffel4304 Hmm I think game of thrones has elements of both non pornographic sexual content and clearly pornographic sexual content.. We may differ in opinion here, but as an example;
I think the scene of Danaerys being raped by kharl drogo is clearly explicit and sexual but I wouldn't call it pornographic.. it has a good reason to be there and helps us understand the characters and the kind of world we find ourselves in
On the other hand, the scene with one of the sand snakes pressing her tits up against the prison bars with the camera lingering on her body is obviously pornographic.
Oh, well.
@@davidyohalem629 ok
@@davidyohalem629 How can you even say that? It’s beautiful literature
@@davidyohalem629
It explains the magic system, it builds the world and mythos... I'm a massive atheist, but the religiosity of The Silmarillion doesn't bother me at all.
@@AuntieDawnsKitchen I interpret the Holy Ones as analogous to the old testament angels (Lucifer, Gabriel, Astoroth, et al.) Under a monotheistic conceiver, the Tetragramaton, Yahweh called whatever suits you. LoTR is more nordic than the middle earth theology expounded in the Silmarilion. Just sayin'.
They're still so in sync - when he makes the comment about completing his hobbit collection, they both acknowledge it and shuffle in their seats in perfect time!
Omg this just made my day! Love to hear those ascents...my grada & gmom, aunties & uncles were all born in Scotland. We sure do love to dance, sing & drink! Let's gig 😁
These two will forever be the most easily loved pair 🥰😂 always such a lovely giggle
Billy and Dominic, we all love you dearly and wish you the greatest of love and success in your lives!!!!! You are absolutely amazing actors and we could not have asked for better men to portray such awesome characters. OUT-F'N-STANDING!
This makes my nerd heart SOOOO happy. I’ve sang that song so many times when I was inebriated in college 😂🍻❤️❤️❤️🧝🏼🧙🏻♂️💍
It makes my nerd heart sad to read your second sentence: the participle of to sing is sung, not sang.
I love Stephen's enthusiasm.
They should record a whole album of Hobbit Drinking Songs.
Watching Stephen genuinely fan girl over LOTR is the BEST thing ever!
I have a respect and a passion for the cast of Lotr, you have no idea.
My cat Angus MacGyver thinks he's a Hobbit. He wants Breakfast, Secon Breakfast, Elevesies, etc.
Surely you know about this, Radagast?
Bonus points for naming your cat "Angus MacGyver"
I love how almost every time Billy says, "me and Dom" Dom say, "Hello!"
The other song was sang in the Green Dragon pub. And it's not "Bless this Took", it's "Better than rain or rippling brook is another beer inside this Took" XD
the whole time I am sitting here, grinning at these two absolutely adorable handsome dorks and I just cant stop giggling
These guys play the boys as I experienced them when I read the BOOK back in the '70's. Thanks for your performance!! Have a little pipeweed for your trouble and maybe a little meal!!
‘Home is behind‘ always destroyed me.
Billy Boyd wrote it.
I loved merry and pippin! they are my favourite hobbits!
Stephen Colbert being such a huge Tolkien fan and being the flag barrier for the franchise is wonderful
Read The Hobbit in 73. I've loved the books since then
This interview and the one with Will Arnett are two where Stephen shows absolute enjoyment and the interviews were amazing. I have watched the, over and over simply because everyone is so happy and relaxed and funny!

This is the happiest I have ever seen Stephen, apart from the way he is with Evie. 🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍🧙♂️
Listen to how happy the crowd is for him.
He actually must have peed himself a little.
I sure would.
I love this show.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💚
It's one thing to add nudity in a 'natural state' way and another to do it in a gratuitous Game of Thrones way.
I love how "Second Breakfast" made Stephen blush! :)
It's ridiculous how amused I am by Dominic "Hello" and raising his hand before Billy tells the almost naked story. I saw him do it on their podcast too. I love it.
A dream come true for him. 👋 🇵🇪
It would be for me too.
Hearing “Li’l Liza Jane” with the NOLA flair to start off the clip made my heart happy. Thanks, Mr. Batiste!
Seeing Stephen geek out is so fun.
