Dorothy D In the books Bilbo lives indefinitely even after the ring is destroyed. Both Bilbo and Frodo head across the sea with the last of the elves and Gandalf.
niklas jensen The ring bearers are the only mortals that were offered a place in the undying lands, so that includes Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee. If I remember correctly it was to help heal them from the dark magical scar that the ring left on them. Sam left in his later life after Rosie, his wife, died. But there’s one more mortal from LOTR that’s actually gone to the undying lands, Gimli. After the ring was destroyed he and Legolas went traveling together for some time before Gimli went to start a dwarwen community in The Glistening Caves and Legolas went with some of his people to heal and grow an area of forest close to Mordor. When time came for Legolas to leave Middle Earth his strong friendship with Gimli prompted him to offer Gimli to come with him to The Undying Lands. Gimli accepted and they built a boat and sailed across the sea. It is however unknown how the arrival of Gimli, a dwarf, was handled as the only other person to travel there without an invitation would have been killed in arrival had it not been that he came on behalf of elves, well elves and men, but elves are the important ones in this case.
Love how the crowd whoops when Elijah says he's going to show his tattoo only be overtaken by sighs of disappointment when he merely rolls up his shirtsleeve!
I think he means a little flowery like "overtaken by sighs" and using "merely". It's a nice sentiment, but not necessary and comes across as flowery writing. I agree it was a funny moment. Nerd tattoos! ;)
Yeah, you could tell he was holding it back as best he could and using all his might not to squee, while geeking out on the inside, being the massive nerd that he is. And while they were on the subjects of tattoos, I'm surprised he didn't ask to see Elijah's Elvish "9" Fellowship tat... I'd be willing to bet a few bucks he really seriously wanted to. :) He was probably trying to be as calm and cool and professional as he could, but I personally think he should just let his geek flag fly and embrace it for the world to see... we geeks REALLY need it.
It would be a great thing for us geeks to have such a beloved public figure as a spokesman and ambassador, as we seem to be the only minority that people can get away with openly mocking without being called out for it. It's wrong to make insults about women, black people, gay people, etc, and if you do it you will rightly catch Hell for it. But if you make a cruelly mocking joke about shy, awkward virgin geeks living in mom's basement? Nothing at all. Being a painfully shy, socially awkward, romantically hopeless geek who has never found someone to share a loving relationship with is not a joke: *it's a horrible, soul-crushing, suicide-inducing pit of perpetual misery and depression.* (And it's regardless of orientation, as geeks can be straight, gay, white, black, male, female, and everything else.) Being a nerd isn't any more a choice than one's skin color or ethnicity, and it doesn't deserve to be the subject of ridicule and cruel jokes any more than being gay is... in fact, more and more researchers are coming to realize that "geeky personality" is actually part of the Autism Spectrum. Yet nerds are still pretty much the last minority group it's just fine to be cruel toward and no one will give you grief for it. People make such a big fuss about the "bullying epidemic" and wring their hands about it, yet they freely, openly engage in cruel mockery of the perennial favorite target of bullies: the shy, unathletic, socially awkward, romantically challenged geek. *Anyone* can be a nerd, regardless of skin color, orientation, gender, sex, ethnicity, etc, geekhood cuts through all other lines, yet for some reason we're like the universal target of everyone's derision. Maybe people consider it OK it's because it's still seen as being "our own fault" that we're shy and clumsy and socially awkward and bad at romantic connections and just bad at "fitting in" in general. When you can't manage to get many eloquent public faces for your group because being ineloquent and socially maladjusted is a huge aspect of your group's identity in the first place, it just doesn't make people feel any empathy for you or want to understand you. When most people see someone picking on a nerd, they don't feel a desire to help out, all they feel is a desire to join in. We're the universal "Other"; *everyone* knows it's OK to pick on nerds! Sorry about the rant, it wasn't actually directed at you. :)
I get what Elijah was saying. We all have a path for ourselves but it will only be fulfilled if we act on it. I don't know if I believe that but I definitely understand what he was saying.
I haven't liked a series this much in a long while! It's a lovely and very well written show. I literally all comes together in the end, every little detail is significant!
Dirk Gently was a surprisingly good watch. I would recommend it to anyone who is on the fence about watching it. You have no idea what's going on for about the first 3 episodes, but it's still entertaining, so you want to keep watching it. I knocked it out in two days haha
Thank God he pulled out and re-buttoned the sleeve of his shirt after putting it back on under his jacket. Otherwise my OCD would have gone off the charts.
"i believe in fate with the ability to change your own life" i thought that sounded kinda familiar, so i followed my hunch and its because in the first season of dirk gently, dirk says to todd "look, just because you know youre playing a game doesnt mean you dont choose your moves." i dont know if it was elijah's belief before the show or not, but something about that just makes me smile. like the entire cast has this connection (pun somewhat intended) to the show thats different than other shows. god i miss dirk gently so much.
I appreciate both of these men in the world so much. I agree wholeheartedly with Elijah- some things happen for a reason, but we live on a planet where free will is also an inevitable factor in how things go down.
