That's funny. It really is. But "more offensive"? Doesn't that seem weird to you?
Try the substitution test. "Colbert finds it more offensive than the fact that he's a Jew." How does _that_ sound? :)
I just think it's funny. You could be an atheist yourself for all I know. But why in the world are so many people fine with others who don't believe in their god _except_ when it comes to those of us who don't believe in _any_ gods?

Bill Garthright Excellent point, sadly that's the world we live in. Maybe because as Stephen points out, you can just dismiss other religions away as cults when you also believe, maybe because they see it as a direct threat to their own beliefs and their own sense of worth or maybe that most of the world still incorrectly believes that without religion there is no basis for morality.

I think Colbert misunderstands what it means to not like fantasy. At least, for some people, (well, OK, me), it's not that for us, everything "has to be real", but it's just not very interesting when reality gets suspended, because when everything becomes possible, nothing is a surprise.
As an example, plot twists are meaningless when they're achieved by fudging what's possible. To me, it's a bit like inheriting too much money and going shopping: it's no fun anymore when you can just say "I'll have everything in the shop"

      @baguettegott3409 4 года назад +84

@@Gottenhimfella I guess it does take a bigger step to suspend your disbelief enough to be invested in the fate of Hobbits and Dwarves and Elves. Before I read Lord of the Rings, I was very sceptical about it - all the goofy sounding names and places... how could anybody ever care about Aragorn, descendant of Isildur, wielding the sword Andruil to defend Minas Tirith? It sounds bonkers, I do recognize that.
But then Tolkien came along and somehow sucked me in. Because yeah, it's all made up, but with so much love and effort and detail that you can FEEL this universe living and breathing beneath the pages. And before I even realized, all the ridiculous names meant something to me and felt honestly more like history than the word salad they look like.
And obviously, a fictional universe also has rules that you can't just break for a random plot twist (unless it's just a bad story, that happens in every genre). It needs to be consistent and believable, and that's a lot harder than it looks.

The icelandic law thing is not because they actually believe in elves, but because nearly all the fairy tales and legends are tied to certain places in the landscape. Any human that narrowly escapes a giant wanting to eat him or a servant completing magical chores or whatever - you can GO where the story takes place. So it´s more about preserving artifacts of folklore rather than actual believe in hidden folk living in rocks.

When I visited Iceland in 1984 I was guest in the home of an Icelandic native family. They had a painting prominently displayed of a giant Jackie Kennedy peering through the window of a home. I asked, "What is that?" They informed me it was a troll. The artist had an unfavorable opinion of Jackie K and so made her a troll. The families I met were most convincing that they believed in the existence of trolls. And not just Iceland, but all of Scandinavia.
It's no accident Norway made the tongue-in-cheek Trollhunter.

Most prominent atheists/scientists don't debate theologians with great relish, since refutations of all theistic theological claims can easily be found in existing debates on YT. It just gives them the oxygen of credibility to be on the same stage as, for example, Dawkins.
All theology is pretty much based on text. That is the first problem. All text is written by humans. And often by humans merely transcribing what other humans wrote years after the alleged events being described. What would have given the Koran or the Bible or the Torah some supernatural cred would have been if it has said something like
"I say unto you, pestilence comes not from evil spirits or sin but creatures too small for man to see & numbering more than the desert sands." (Dawk) or some profound mathematics that no human could have known then.

As a Catholic who loves Lord of the Rings I've had many friends who were Athiest and hated LoTR and omg the conversations we had on these topics were so fun. As long as you have respect and a sense of humor about everything anyone can talk about anything.

I strongly urge you to watch the final 10 minutes of his show "BBC Extras". I'm gonna tell you this, without exaggerating, his acting when he has his melt-down on the couch in the Big Brother house, is among my TOP 5 acting of all time (doesn't matter what kind of media..movie, serie, sitcoms, teater.) When I saw that scene I realized Ricky is not just a comedian, but one of the best actor the world has ever seen. I frequently come back to that scene and observe the pure beauty, and always start to cry myself. It's a relief, sort of like therapy. Thank you Ricky.
All actors/actress can cry, you see it all the time, but what you see 99 % of the time is "movie crying"...it so fucking fake, i.e. bad acting in my books. A perfect example of this is Jennifer Lawrence...great allround actress, but whenever she tries to put out true emotions it's just ugly to watch. I'm not trying to slag her of, she's just one of many.

Its cringe-y for me to watchi how nervous Colbert seems when he is interviewing Gervais! Ricky is soooo confident aaaall the time! Such an intellectual mind! Sharp and eloquent, that’s why he doesn’t lose in such debates like Colbert would put up about religion. Love Gervais!!! I hope his career goes a long way. Love all his work of art from Invention of Lying to The Office, his stand up specials and Afterlife! His Golden Globes 2020 monologue was brilliant! #RICKYGERVAIS

Seemed to me like Colbert was also blasting religion. Thing people always get wrong is the my god vs your god when in reality its the same god the different religions are just arguing about the details basically. Golden Globes 2020 was amazing

Well let's see Gervais write a book and see how he compares to the intellect and popularity of Tolkien. Tolkien was writing a mythology, not a statement of fact. Read the multi-layered intricacies of Tolkien, and you'll realize what a low grade pleb Gervais actually is. His only talent is to smugly take the piss out of everything, which, ironically, takes little talent.

Some things that offend me is a group of friends blocking a walkway, so they can walk side by side. And they don't accommodate for any passerby.
Pedestrian standing at the edge of the sidewalk preparing to cross intersection.
    People dragging their shoes.
People with keys hanging off belts. The noise is annoying like when someone is pencil drumming or clicking their pen for hours.
    Wrong numbers
The stupid walking you're in my way dance. If people walked like they drive, in the correct lanes, this would not be a problem
