Spectrum UK Isn’t it horrible how everybody is pointing fingers to defend their own group instead of taking a step back, seeing the nonsense and have their own opinion? I'd say that's more circumstantial, *Sometimes* you get offended while being right but by no means is it debatable that you can always be right while offended.
JamieBleed 99 No it isn't. He's not saying that you can never be offended and right at the same time, he's saying being offended doesn't automatically mean you're right.

"people get offended when they mistake the subject of a joke with the target". this explains what I've been attempting to put into words for years, so damn eloquently.
I find it weird that Stephen claims people "find god" as they approach death. Darwin and Einstein both did the exact reverse, they dismissed god and all religion with him.
Tessa Romein a prime example Ricky has used before was a joke he made about Bruce Jenner, whilst he was at the golden globes. The extent was essentially “I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. What a year she’s had. Became a role model for women everywhere. Didn’t do a bunch for women drivers.” And people were really offended as they took it as him mocking trans people, when he was mocking Bruce.
@@tessaromein5787 Also, I'd say: imagine a comedian says something along the lines of, for example, "all foreigners steal". Now, obviously depending on the context to the joke, the target might actually be 'foreigners', but it's just as possible that the real target is actually 'people who think all foreigners steal'. And people often mistake the two. Maybe too obvious of an example, but I can't think of another one right now: "Science is fake. According to science, the sea level rises at 1 inch per century. Well, I measured it the other day, and it was actually 5 feet in 6 hours." The comedian doesn't actually make fun of science. He makes fun of people who don't trust science.
EXACTLY OH MY GOD. Everyone seems to think he's an insensitive prick but what they don't realise is he's the ONLY person in Hollywood who is blatantly honest and is not afraid to stand up AND SPEAK THE TRUTH
No, I think it was the #metoo thing. Gervais himself says it's a wonderful year to host, but his career would end, meaning he would go all out with the offensive jokes. Dude's hosted 4 times and he's called out everyone before (multiple years), so I don't think NBC would have had a problem with that for a 5th time so long as the ratings come in. But I doubt they trust him with #metoo and all the political topics, because they probably think the initial ratings wouldn't outdo the harm to their image what with advertisers and what not. That's too bad. It would have been awesome to get his take on what's was going on at the time.
It's a loss when people are like "we're not even gonna have anyone host so that nobody's offended for sure". There's less chance for our favourite celebrity to be called out on a night full of pride and glamour. A room full of entertainment people (with power) that can't even take a joke? Truly what a loss.
Ricky Gervais is one of Colbert's best guests because they have really good chemistry. Plus Ricky Gervais is just an awesome comedian with the best sense of humor!
No, actually Covert is afraid to insult him because that's he does 100% of the time, he just offends people. And Ricky is literally impossible to offend and if Colbert tried he would get burned, hard.
@Yeah Mate Carr is terrible at improvisation. His material is always planned. He just doesn't give a shit who it offends. Ricky Gervais can make any joke he wants because we know he's a good dude. And he's funny. When a bigot makes jokes they're spreading hate, and that's not okay. The difference is the malice.
@Football-Pundit (i) So, using your logic, because he's a 'smart dude' in your opinion, he can say things that could get other people in court for saying exactly the same thing, yes? Also (ii) was clearly sarcasm; shoulda known not to expect much on a Colbert feed. My bad
@Football-Pundit You're not getting this are you? Zyconaut asked the very pertinent question: Are you seriously saying a person's free speech depends on whether or not people like them? And you replied : Its not about free speech, ...coz there is no bad intent. So I picked a REAL WORLD example of a comedian found guilty of 'Gross Offence' in the UK and asked if, in your opinion, Gervais should also be found similarly guilty, if he had done the exact same thing (it is such a Cause Celebre that I won't explain it). This is a clear extension of Zyconaut's point that one cannot simply delineate comedians from bigots based on popularity: you're either in favour of the right to offend or you're not; this means you're either a liberal or an authoritarian. Most of Colbert's audience is authoritarian ( but like to think they're liberal) because they want to restrict certain persons' speech based on a perception of their 'intent' . Which is what you did. "...coz there is no bad intent." Hence my pointing out that you are, in fact, illiberal. He doesn't 'trigger' me because I don't really listen to him and I'm only here to show people up as authoritarian bigots who have an ill-thought-out philosophy (which is what Zyconaut rather cleverly did with one simple question). Cos it's fun and people who watch Colbert are easy to troll because they tend to have such huge gaps in their understanding of social issues.
Anybody whos doing a show for comedy purposes will not be taken seriously if their offensive, someone saying the same stuff at a political rally will be taken seriouslu
Imagine being so rich, happy and successful that you can rock track pants on national television and still be as much of a legend as Ricky is.... Man I love him.
You have missed the point.. Ricky has talked about being a celebrity a lot. It's about not taking it seriously. Nothing to do with him being rich or successful.. It's about being yourself.
@NJO Me too! He is my favorite comedian, i think. I LOVED Louis CK about as much and couldn't pick a favorite. I guess Louis loses points for a certain habit he has, though.
Most American hosts think it's about them. This is why Graham Norton is the best in the world. He doesn't fake laugh. Ever. He doesn't talk over his guests and as a viewer you get to feel like they're with you and you're in on the joke. It's honestly painful watching American hosts. It's only guests like Ricky who save them.
Unfiltered, unapologetic, self-deprecating, and brutally honest while never being mean spirited: Gervais is just the right dose that is needed at tightly wound up award shows. Looking forward to the Netflix special. 😂😂
I really respect him for saying “there’s nothing you cannot joke about it just depends on the subject and the target” and that’s true, when he said god isn’t real, that was just a funny little joke, the target being the audience there. If he were to say people were stupid for believing in a god or something that’d be something else, because then people would just be the butt of a joke they wouldn’t want to be. It makes so much sense and people nowadays really need to learn the difference between the two
I wish Stephen would stop relying so heavily on scripted questions and have a genuine conversation with a guess, especially guys who are comedians. When they both are relaxed and actively talking, there won't be any awkward pauses followed by off topic questions.
I don’t think he’s quick enough on his feet the way Letterman or Jerry Seinfeld might be. Those guys are great at bouncing conversations back and forth, but a lot of times I see Stephen just go “Yeah...” awkwardly when responding to a guest
Eric Burkheimer it is usually agreed there is a psychological change in people when they have a child. human nature identifies their children as their future and those with narcissistic tendencies often see the children as part of themselves so they become more of a focus for the parent So I think anyway, I'm no expert just a guy that likes these conversations
I agree, kids are awesome...that's one reason I enjoy being around kids is their unfiltered honesty...several years ago a cousin of mine said something to me and I thought it was SO hilarious...I was bending over to put on my shoes, and he said in a matter-of-fact tone "you know, you have a big butt"....I turned around and smiled at him and said "I do don't I?"....I didn't get offended because it was true I did have a big butt...I still get a laugh out of that and now he's a teenager about to graduate high school
@Eric Some people aren't cut out for kids, and there is nothing wrong with you preferring dogs. Even as a teenaged girl, I hated babysitting, when I got older, I took my birth control religiously to prevent an unwanted child. Once I got in my mid 20's I decided I wanted my own baby, I was just at a place in my life where I wanted that responsibility and experience. I love and dote on my child, but to be honest, I don't care much for other people's kids. I'm not mean to them, but I don't have nurturing feelings towards them either. You sound young, one day you may decide to become a father and IF you do, you will understand immediately the love you feel for your own child. Of course, you'll love your dog more, because, let's face it, dogs are cuter..lol.
Ricky doesn't insult dude, no comedian insults, they make jokes about other people. It's funny criticism, if you cant take it well then that's your problem. I find Tina and Amy's jokes pretty lame, as they are really basic and also they are heavily limited by the fact that they can't talk anything bad about the celebrities at all, so all their jokes suck
Michael Scofield There are many ways to do comedy. The easy way is to make fun of others people low moments. To me, the great comedian is the one who can make fun of other people high moments. Very hard to do, it requires intelligence, not lack of shame. Tina and Amy's jokes don´t try to hurt people, that´s why some people prefer Ricky Gervais. There is a very thin line between a joke and insult. Sometimes only the tone of the same phrase changes the meaning of the message. But hey, many people loves Ricky Gervais, it's a matter of taste. I would have loved to see him calling out the hypocrisy on the movement "me too". But then things would not stop there, and I personally prefer to see people happy than uncomfortable. But that´s just me.
Ricky is the best because he aims at people who NEED some humbling. I don't care how a comedian makes me laugh, whether he insults or not , uses foul language or not , is crude or not, etc - THEY EITHER MAKE ME LAUGH OR THEY DON'T .... PERIOD
These 2 are amazing together. Not only did Colbert listen for 90% of the interview but when he made a joke or spoke it was absolutely relevant or absolutely hilarious.
Ricky Gervais is my # 1 favorite comedian. He's the funniest person I've ever witnessed in my life. Moved to the states from Belfast Northern Ireland as a child, so a little bit of British culture has always been a part of me. I found out about Ricky before any of my American peers. Must have been about 14 years old when my older brother introduced me to The Office when it first came out and I've been a fan ever since. Maybe weird to say but he's been such a big part, or influence on my life. He's an escape when you just want to laugh, no matter how shit, how low times can get. It's like every time he speaks I'm laughing. You know those times you laugh so hard.. You can barely breathe.. You can't stop, your abs actually start to hurt... That's me countless times listening to Ricky Gervais.... Especially If it's him in a room with Karl pilkington and Stephen merchant, or Warick Davis. Then forget it... Didn't want to talk about the weight thing... But not going to lie. Got this little bad feeling in my chest,,or in the bottom of my gut since I first saw he regained a little weight. Only because I'm such a big fan.. I just want to see this guy healthy and feeling great. So he can keep doing what he does, for as long as he can. I mean, he must have felt so much better back a few years ago after losing all that weight. He's Ricky Gervais... Get on those stem cells, take some HGH and TRT MAN ... Just want this guy feeling healthy and great.
You need to do more research if you think RG is the funniest person you've ever witnessed. He's a fine guy but you've been seriously sheltered if you think he's top of the pecking order. I say this as someone who is British but also who has lived in north america and knows all the great current and historic american and british comedians of the past 4 decades. For modern day superior quality UK comedians, for example, try Frankie Boyle (whom other comics -- and no doubt RG himself -- would agree is superior to RG)
@@bb2664 There's no right or wrong answer in who you personally think is the best. Been a fan of Gervais since 2002. I have followed Western comedy and have love for a lot of the greats in America. I still however think Gervais is consistently the funniest in his stand up, real life, off the cuff and podcasts more than anyone else I've followed. Frankie boyle comes in at close 2nd, for me personally
Ricky is so morbid and doesn't hesitate or isn't afraid to joke about anything at all, that's why I love him, Colbert is a comedy genius but Ricky is one of those few that've made me laugh so fkn hard that I almost passed out from not bein' able to breathe
I still hope that Gervais would one day do the White House Correspondents' Dinner. That and The Golden Globes should both be venues in the spirit that anyone and anything gets third degree burnt by the host. Comedy is the 5th estate: to keep the media, the public figures, the legislative, the judicial and the executive branches honest and sensible.
Well, that highlights exactly why societies should only elect the most honorable people to power, right? When people with power can believably threaten with extreme or even destructive violence, not just against the comedian/citizen who called them out, but also (more frighteningly so) against anyone and anything he holds dear, the system breaks down when they'd actually do.
Ricky Gervais is the best comedian I have ever heard. His Golden Globes monologue pissing off all those shallow Hollywood actors is just priceless. Bring him back!
'I think honestly is funny' Ricky Gervais Thats why he loves Karl so much most honest man on TV wont even say his own Tv show is good when promoting it XD
The US is a bizarre place. Why is it such a big deal to not believe in God. In most western countries no one could care less whether your believe or not.
Stephen is REALLLLY Catholic and Ricky's a pretty vocal atheist, so I think that they just enjoy sparring. Stephen's arguments are always uncharacteristically weak, though.
I don’t think most Americans care, but our Jesus freaks are pretty loud. I think Steven asked him about it because Ricky is a known atheist and did like an hour routine on how god isn’t real and stuff
Phil Savage most religious arguments are weak, without actual thought put into it. Besides, any religious debate comes down to wit and logic, something a legendary stand up comic is a master at. So Ricky shuts down most of his attempts.
Maggie E But you do care. You care enough that your politicians need to display their religious conviction at any and all moments. If it was Germany, or Denmark or Norway or any of the Benelux countries, if any of our politicians started to spout religion, we'd throw them out, because they clearly aren't of sound mind.
Brilliant! Love watching them play off each other. Colbert rarely struggles to keep up but with Ricky he is challenged. The "happy ending" comment was very quick and it was perfect.
These two are tripping each other over with their jokes. It started with the one about having a ceasarian to cure chronic constipation and ended with calling Stephen a Sub-woofer.
"Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right." - Ricky Gervais, 2018.....Chris Rock could shown will smith his place but he didnt.....huge respect!!!
Ricky is such a sharp and witty guy. His comment about the kids and how he finds unfiltered honesty funny certainly rings true given his fascination for Karl Pilkington, not to mention his film "The Invention of Lying". I would've been skeptical of his claim that he was fit for his first 28 years if I hadn't recently discovered his '80s band Seona Dancing's videos here on RUclips, but yup, he used to be a skinny, Gary-Numan-looking dude back then.
I watched the first episode on RUclips, and Ricky's good and all, but the quiz show part itself is so American and the contestants are so desperately trying to be big personalities because they clearly dream of being on TV, yet are so mindnumbingly stupid, that it's kinda hard to watch.
john Baldock Someone came up with a brilliant idea of making the show more watchable: Have Steve Merchant as the host instead of Fred Savage, and instead of 4 kids answering Ricky's questions, have 3 kids and Karl Pilkington.

"...coz there is no bad intent."
Hence my pointing out that you are, in fact, illiberal.
He doesn't 'trigger' me because I don't really listen to him and I'm only here to show people up as authoritarian bigots who have an ill-thought-out philosophy (which is what Zyconaut rather cleverly did with one simple question). Cos it's fun and people who watch Colbert are easy to troll because they tend to have such huge gaps in their understanding of social issues.
agree. he also has a go at himself.
Anybody whos doing a show for comedy purposes will not be taken seriously if their offensive, someone saying the same stuff at a political rally will be taken seriouslu

Strange that he's thinking every day about something that he doesn't think exists.

Best part of the interview, hands down!
10:20 Shows how brilliant and aware Ricky Is, he knows the segment is coming to an end so uses that question as chance to plug his upcoming special.
I guess they planned that before, since Stephen's question was such a great set up. ^^

Dominick Sabatino: no I always refer to Ricky as "they".
It's an inside joke between hi... ahem... them and me. ^^
Cheers to that.
i also noticed that. It was mind blowing how he turned the joke in his favor. So smart!
Imagine being so rich, happy and successful that you can rock track pants on national television and still be as much of a legend as Ricky is.... Man I love him.

God, I fuckin love Ricky so much
I had briefly forgotten why he is so much fun but doggone, do I remember now!
He would been awesome in "Polka King".... Jack Black was forced, but the movie is still OK.
his life-partner might have something to say about that, +Jon, but that's just, like, my opinion, man...
@NJO Me too! He is my favorite comedian, i think. I LOVED Louis CK about as much and couldn't pick a favorite. I guess Louis loses points for a certain habit he has, though.
One of the funniest men ever
It's great when guests are way funnier than the hosts.
That’s the point...the host doesn’t want to upstage the guest.
Wouldn't be hard on this show.
Graham Norton has the biggest, abysmal, embarrassing, fake laugh I've ever heard. His show is terrible, the bloke is s tool.
CDbiggen IKR Stephen is boring asf, I only clicked bc of Ricky.

Unfiltered, unapologetic, self-deprecating, and brutally honest while never being mean spirited: Gervais is just the right dose that is needed at tightly wound up award shows. Looking forward to the Netflix special. 😂😂
Gervais is one of the only guests that genuinely cracks Steven up and I love it.
It makes so much sense and people nowadays really need to learn the difference between the two
By people you mean Americans. Literally all of them are the most fragile people on the planet atm.

jojofromtx the meme or Ricky?
I wish Stephen would stop relying so heavily on scripted questions and have a genuine conversation with a guess, especially guys who are comedians. When they both are relaxed and actively talking, there won't be any awkward pauses followed by off topic questions.
He's on CBS now, which is great for him but I'm sure comes with much stricter rules on how he interviews guests than Comedy Central had.
You're so right. All the tiny moments he's 'off-book' are gold. He'd be so much funnier and interesting if he could let go of the rules.
James Burgess Oh I loved Craig Ferguson for that very reason
I don’t think he’s quick enough on his feet the way Letterman or Jerry Seinfeld might be. Those guys are great at bouncing conversations back and forth, but a lot of times I see Stephen just go “Yeah...” awkwardly when responding to a guest
James Burgess still comes out sounding intelligent.
Kids are awesome. They're the ultimate, unfiltered honesty.
Don't want any of my own, but it's funny as hell to hear them riff on things.
Eric Burkheimer it is usually agreed there is a psychological change in people when they have a child. human nature identifies their children as their future and those with narcissistic tendencies often see the children as part of themselves so they become more of a focus for the parent
So I think anyway, I'm no expert just a guy that likes these conversations
I hate children
Obi-Wan Kenobi nah, you hate emo teens with delusions of grandeur.

They made a massive mistake getting Seth Myers to host the Golden Globes, Ricky is the best host ever for the Golden Globes
Well, that's debatable. Is way more hard to make comedy without insult than with insults. For me...tina fey amy poehler.
But that´s just me.
what poehler did to meyers at golden globes is unacceptable, what a c
Ricky is the best because he aims at people who NEED some humbling. I don't care how a comedian makes me laugh, whether he insults or not , uses foul language or not , is crude or not, etc - THEY EITHER MAKE ME LAUGH OR THEY DON'T .... PERIOD

Not only did Colbert listen for 90% of the interview but when he made a joke or spoke it was absolutely relevant or absolutely hilarious.

These two are a surprisingly great onscreen duo, I'd love to see more of them outside of a chat show setting.
He is not funnier than Dave Chappell Or eddy Murphy

This guy can talk for hours and I can listen to him for hours
imo you are strange. try talking to yourself. if you get good enough you could start listening to yourself and never run out of entertainment
D Vents It was a figure of speech, dude

No such thing as a strong religious argument.
Maggie E
But you do care.
You care enough that your politicians need to display their religious conviction at any and all moments.
If it was Germany, or Denmark or Norway or any of the Benelux countries, if any of our politicians started to spout religion, we'd throw them out, because they clearly aren't of sound mind.

I watched the first episode on RUclips, and Ricky's good and all, but the quiz show part itself is so American and the contestants are so desperately trying to be big personalities because they clearly dream of being on TV, yet are so mindnumbingly stupid, that it's kinda hard to watch.

Someone came up with a brilliant idea of making the show more watchable:
Have Steve Merchant as the host instead of Fred Savage, and instead of 4 kids answering Ricky's questions, have 3 kids and Karl Pilkington.
