I love Gandalf’s reaction when he heard Sam went with Frodo. He appreciates and understands Sam’s value. It comforted him that Sam was with him. He never underestimated Sam
Orange fox yep I like that too ahaah..
Please Mr Gandalf, don’t turn me into anything....unnatural.
No? Perhaps not. I've thought of a better use for you.
Sam only went with Frodo because he said "Don't you lose his Samwise Gamgee". And we all know he doesn't mean too.
Frodo could had fell if not for Sam, Sam was te actual hero and frodo take all the credit !!
Ian McKellen is such a fantastic actor! He was perfect for Gandalf.
+SJMJ91 Classically trained too ^^
I'm convinced Tolkien would've loved it.
The only other person I can imagine playing gandalph with the same quality of acting is Patrick Stewart
The ironic thing is that Christopher Lee had met Tolkien and Tolkien said he was the only person he approved of to play Gandalf if they ever made movies of LOTR
Ian Mckellen is planning to play Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings TV series. He says that he's down for it
"Did he? Did he indeed? Good."
How beautiful this is.
In the book it is "did he! Did he indeed? It is news to me, yet it does not surprise me. Good! Very good! You lighten my heart..."
As much to say "Thank God."
@@theo2z1z94 they used fewer words in the movie because the actor did a very good job to convey the rest with facial expressions

“But he is not so mighty yet that he is above fear.” I swear, every line of Gandalf is perfect.
McKellen's delivery is such a perfect match for Tolkien's Gandalf. Certain lines from the books could sound *so dumb* if handled by a lesser actor, but Ian McKellen had such an immense capacity to inflect such nuanced emotion and thought into each line it brings it past fantasy camp and makes you really believe you're hearing a mythic hero
@@srsteck03 I agree. Particularly his words during his standoff with the Balrog, that could’ve been cringe. But Ian muthafuckin’ McKellen is a god.
@@srsteck03 it is also because he based the character on Tolkien. There is a recording of Tolkien reading the books in much the same way.
In the books it was actually Aragorn who said that
Every Line in LOTR is perfect.
I now try to read other stuff, and they can be good books. But they always seem to have one issue or another. One author can be brilliant in creating tension but is real crap at writing love parts or realistic women.
Others do nearly everything perfect, but the main characters are either a bit dull or are going through such hardships there never seem to be a win. (I'm looking at you farseer)
Tolkien had everything. Nobody beats the original. All opinions are of course subjective. But i think many who read fantasy can agree on this. It is still on the top rankings of book sold even 60+years after it's release. I highly doubt we will say the same about current fantasy epics in 60 years. LOTR is a masterpiece on the heights with Bethoven or the Mona Lisa.
"Cool, thanks for the update Gandalf, but I just came over to ask what time breakfast is."
greyztone Oh my gosh haha! I guess realistically Aragorn walked up there to just be with Gandalf and then Gandalf started speaking to Aragorn since Aragorn came up to him.
Hahaha! Sounded like something a hobbit would have said, especially Merry or Pippin
i just cracked up at this 😂
HAHAHAHAHAH
You've already had breakfast
I love how Gandalf speaks hope into Aragorn "Sauron fears what you may become"
JJay479 I also love the contrasting scene at the feast at Edoras in Return of the king where Gandalf is the one who fears Frodo's failure and Aragorn is the one who reassures him.
Gandalf's cheif talent, which is interestingly closely related to the power of his elven ring, Nenya, which Cirdan gave to him. The ring gifts the bearer with the ability to inspire hope, as well as giving those around him a resistance to despair and domination.
@@falcodarkzz It's Narya. Nenya is the Diamond Ring and its bearer is Galadriel.
Sauron genuinely is afraid of Aragorn in the books
And Aragorn speaks hope into Gandalf, by telling him Sam went eith Frodo.
1:42
That small moment where Gandalf sees that Aragorn regrets leaving Frodo is so SO good.
You mean that tiny eye twitch? A great actor can do that and it's amazing.
and when Aragorn replies Gandalf turns into the Grey for a moment
Not only that, according to the books Gandalf could read minds, so that maybe explains his reaction to Aragorn after that exact moment :)
That's the stuff of dreams in terms of acting skills. Chills
i for the first time realized it.. this is beyond perfect, I always adored the subtle details about Aragorn and Viggo's acting but a duet with Sir Ian makes it even better
The way Ian McKellen exhales at 2:05 saying "Yes, very good" carries a ton of emotion and talent. The acting at this film comes from another dimension.
Compared to the level of acting we get today we may never see acting of this high a caliber ever again.
No, it comes from years of experience and training, and having worked with countless actors in his career, supplemented by his own life experiences. That's how fine wine ages.

I love how comforting Gandalf is in this scene. He’s essentially saying “yes, I know this looks terrible and we’re not out of the woods yet, but the odds are in our favour.” Ian McKellen’s performance has a gentle nature to it that feels like a friend or a family member telling you “everything’s going to be alright”. Wonderful.
Also sort of like an angelic messenger speaking to someone faithful and giving them an answer to prayers while encouraging them to persevere through coming trials.
wish he had more material on gandalf. how he became this, practically sauron's main opponent on the chessboard of middle earth when he was scared to fight him at first
Meanwhile, on rop crap we got a non speaking stupid na old man that comes from a meteor and doesn't even know simple English

Aragorn is so great here. Even though he is a king and a great warrior, he is humble enough to listen to someone else and take advice.
Aragon is not king yet
Gandalf is a Maia, not a bad thing to take his advice
Tolkien wrote his stories so well everybody needs to take a good lesson as if he were a 1900s Shakespeare (story telling wise and his beautiful use of language) and 95% probably life experience
And in the books at Helm’s Deep it was actually Théoden’s idea to ride out so Aragorn learned from many great people
As everyone should practice.
i think tolkien saw sam as the real hero of lord of the rings
+Sam jay I guess everyone did right ? TBH I always thought Frodo is little girl :D
From the lotr wiki: "Tolkien himself expressed this view in one of his letters: Sam was referred to as the "chief hero"
Sam jay he is
Even Jon Snow has a Sam and I bet he will find important answers in that huge library...
Sam jay Me too.
This is one of my favorite EE scenes. I love it because it really puts Gandalf's mission into greater perspective and I love the transition from "Yes, very good." to Sam climbing up the cliff. Just great stuff.
I love how hopeful Gandalf's face becomes learning that Sam is still with Frodo
I feel like he is also remembering when he made Sam promise not to lose Frodo as well. Like, he's actually pleased that Sam is STILL keeping his word despite it all.
I like that Gandalf appreciates Sam as well, that he sees potential in many living beings, who may seem ordinary to everyone
And the transition of the score from hopeful and mildly triumphant to blaring trumpets of raw dread as the black gate comes into picture.
I remember before the EE came out you were rewarded with this scene if you beat Two Towers video game.
God when he says 'very good' his whole face lights up. His head is telling him that Frodo has to do the impossible but his heart in that moment tells him Frodo will find a way somehow, against all odds
The sheer joy that Gandalf expresses as he learns of Sam going with Frodo is simply wonderful to watch
Fun fact: Melkor, Sauron’s master and the original dark lord although easily the most powerful of the Valar, he was cursed with one thing no other Valar was. The ability to feel fear. This was ultimately his undoing, and a paranoia that he passed down to his servant Sauron as well. Their fear, anxiety, and apprehension was what ultimately led to both their downfalls. It made Sauron act before he was ready, and rashly. Although weak, the strength of men was tenacious and was able to take advantage of these moments when Sauron overextended himself and his forces out of fear.
But that was because the Fall of the Angels (Ainur in Elvish). Melkor, the Lucifer of Tolkien, was able to feel fear because his revolt against Eru, the One True God. The fear only can known by those have fallen in sin and evil, and Melkor, as Lucifer, was the first one
I spontaneously thought, like London (WW II) and Ukraine.
""... the strength of men was tenacious ..." Well done.

"Edward R. Murrow: First Night of the Blitz on London"
What I love about this scene from the extended edition is that Gandalf helps explain to those who haven't read the books why Mount Doom was unguarded. The idea of destroying the One Ring never entered Sauron's darkest dreams. What he feared the most was someone like Gandalf, Saruman, or even Aragorn mastering the Ring and supplanting him. Plus I love how Gandalf's spirits rise when he learns from Aragorn that Sam went with Frodo.
That's true, but Mt. doom and mordor would have been far to full of orcs for Frodo and Sam to get through undetected. That's why after the battle of the Palenor fields, Aragorn assembles all of what is left of the armies of men and confronts Sauron in the Palantiri stone that was in Denethor's possession. In the stone he bluffs that he (Aragorn) has the ring and that with it he's coming to Mordor for victory. In reality of course Frodo still had the ring and because his mission was still totally unknown Sauron believed him and drained all of Mordor of orcs to confront Aragorn. Aragorn and all who followed him new they were grossly outnumbered 20 to 1 but it was known that this last distraction was the only opportunity for Frodo to make it safely. This is suggested in the movies but I think it's one of the major drawbacks that Peter Jackson didn't make this more clear for the audience. One thing which is painfully done wrong is there is a scene in the extended edition of ROTK where they show the moment Aragorn confronts Sauron, and instead of besting Sauron's will, Aragorn falls to the ground and drops the Palantir. . . which is just so wrong. I don't understand why they did that, but otherwise the movies are tremendous.
@@zackclark626 I don't think it is meant that he loses to saurons will but that he is scared of losing arwen gotta sell that love story
@Zachariah Clark doubt it changes your view but in the movie (while it's hard to know for certain) it appears Aragorn drops the palantir onto the seat in front of him and a moment later he drops the Evenstar. Still not sure he really drops it in reality. I don't know it's an odd scene.
@@zackclark626 hmm I'm also wondering if you've merged him falling and dropping it when pippin picks up at the beginning with his confronting Sauron alone with it near the end.
This is true but there’s something else everyone always forgets. Mt. Doom is guarded. There are thousands of orcs stationed right in front of it. Literally the only reason Frodo and Sam got through is because Sauron sent them all to the Black Gate to destroy Aragorn’s army. Between this and the fact that he can’t imagine someone destroying the ring, he just didn’t see the need for placing guards directly in front of the door
“The veiling shadow that glowers in the East takes shape. Sauron will suffer no rival. From the summit of Barad-dur his eye watches ceaselessly. But he is not so mighty yet that he is above fear.”

Sauron is depicted as pretty powerful and scary even without physical embodiment in the LotR trilogy. But it's what Sauron does in the Second Age - subjugating Numenorean Kings, seducing them with promise of immortality, turning men against one another , starting a Satanic -like death cult that demanded blood sacrifice, that you really understand why he's so terrifying. He's not even a fraction of that in the LotR
pretty crazy he was able to use his influence to have a church dedicated to Morgoth be built in Numenor. That's a trip!!!
Which is sad considering the whole plot hole of the one ring at that time, surely if sauron was in possession of it at the time, Eru would have destroyed it then.
Nevertheless one of my favourite stories.
@@wintax Curious why you think that's a plot hole. If Eru wanted to intervene directly and destroy the One Ring he could have done so at any time, at least most probably. Sauron did have it in his possession and used it with great affect to overthrow and corrupt minds.
@@wintax that's actually not a bad point. However you're not the first to think of it and so Tolkien directly addressed it in Letter 211:
"I do not think one need boggle at this spirit carrying off the One Ring, upon which his power of dominating minds now largely depended."
Sauron was able to carry the ring from Numeor, after it was cast into the sea and the world reshaped, by his spirit, at the same time that he himself escaped to Middle-Earth.
Is this what the upcoming Amazon series will be about?
So many great things to say about this scene. One of the best is the music, particularly when Gandalf says, "the ring remains hidden", how the music becomes ever so slightly uplifting, going along with the hope that Gandalf feels.

They casted every single role for this movie flawlessly but Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf is something else.
And then Amazon destroys it
One of those perfect castings. This movie has quite a few of them - Viggo as Aragorn… Elijah as Frodo…
Mmm… though indeed very good, I’d say as someone who read the book 100 or more times, that Sean Connery is agreed upon as optimal for Gandalf, Liam neeson perfect for Aragorn (though Daniel day Lewis also could have been marvellous) and triple H for boromir and for me they are the perfect cast and it sure bugs me. And I don’t like wood’s Frodo at all.
“Frodo would not have gotten far without sam”
This scene makes me realise that Gandalf sees Sam the same way he saw Bilbo. He chose Bilbo for the Erebor quest because Bilbo “gave Gandalf hope”. And he saw the potential in him even if he didn’t see it in him himself. You can see that same reaction here when talking about Sam. Sam clearly gives Gandalf hope and also does not yet see his own potential.
Gandalf being happy that Sam went with him tickles my soul. He knew Frodo would need him. And indeed he did. Sam lowkey the hero.
There will be no better casting than Mortenson as Aragorn.
You know that things will go well when a Maia smiles just like that after hearing a bit of good news...
The smallest person, holding out hope that the good on this world is worth fighting for, and ultimately doing the impossible is the essence of this story.
When Gandalf realised that Sam went with Frodo, the wave of relief and hope that came over Gandalf the Fucking White himself.
That shows the power of Sam's rock hard will and loyalty/love for Frodo. Fucking Sam I love him.

Damn..back when hollywood had good writers. It's night and day different
Ian Mckellen is so good. He rattled off so much dialogue and exposition but it doesn’t feel rushed. It carried much nuance to it and he plays with the words so exquisitely. Just the right amount of tension and slack in the right places.
That's the stage experience for you!
Aragorn is King Arthur and Gandalf his Merlin, invaluable advisor, powerful ally, wise beyond words
Remember when this was the standard?
Gandalf the white seems much more technical and robotic but when Aragorn mentions Sam it’s like his attitude changes and Gandalf the Grey comes out againZ
Gandalf´s voice is so soothing here.
Now THIS is dialogue!!!
I love how the music hints at the theme when the ring is destroyed
That Sauron couldn't believe that anyone would DESTROY such power is amazing, and very applicable even today.
Last few moments of this is pure GOLD. Frodo wouldn't of been able to do this alone whatsoever.
That's a devestating exposition. What a flurry of wordsmithing.
“Don’t you leave him, Samwise Gamgee. And I don’t mean to. I don’t mean to.”
I love Gandalf’s reaction to hearing Sam went with Frodo. He understood that Frodo was going to need someone to keep him on the correct path. To remind him what he was fighting for, as well keeping him fed and protecting him. And after seeing what Sam was willing to do to keep Frodo safe from Gollum, Gandalf made the right choice. I mean, hell, Sam even took the Ring when he thought Frodo was dead. If Sam wanted to, he could’ve finished the mission, but he understood Frodo made the choice to carry the Ring to the end, and was willing to honor his choice, even to the end.
this is practically the letter of the book but if feels so alive, there is a pair of actors to bring it to life
I love how gandalf just talks for 2 minutes straight and aragorn doesn't say a word all the time
The relief on gandalfs face when he heard Sam went with Frodo got me in my feels
“Sauron and Saruman are tightening the noose.” Chills man, what a monologue.
I love this knowing that aragorn and Mithrandir have been friends for decades before the events of the lord of the rings.
I've recently been reading up on the true ties of the heirs of Arnor & Gondor Aragorns claim has validation but not so much so that he could just waltz into the city and claim it.
It was his actions leading the attack on mordor healing the wounded after the battle of pelenor fields and the key to his eventual claiming of the thrown was farmer newly appointed steward supporting and stating the actions of aragorn over the years.
“I’ve made a promise, Mr. Frodo. A promise. ‘Don’t you leave him, Samwise Gamgee.’ And I don’t mean to. I don’t mean to.”
I love how all of the members of the fellowship are genuinely good people. They would never betray you
The relationship between Gandalf and Aragorn is one of the best in the trilogy
So many words to get out from him in two minutes.
I like good writing, acting, and directing.
1:16 you can hear the victory music when Gandalf starts talking about Frodo and the ring
Not victory, it's more about Hope I think
The small way Gandalf's eyes widen at 1:59 really convinces us he was unaware and then pleased as punch. A mark of Sir Ian McKellen's skill
The acting is top notch. Even this small snippet is moving.
Man, the extended editions of these movies are incredible. Each scene is just so well done. Written and acted well. The relief in Gandalf's voice and tone when he discovers Sam went with Frodo is great. "Good. Yes... very good." Prior to that you could see the doubt in Gandalf facial expressions and tone when he said they must depend on just Frodo, but he had to say it in front of Aragorn in order to show trust and belief in the strategy. You can also see the concern and doubt in Aragorn's face as Gandalf is saying it. However, the moment Aragorn tells Gandalf that Sam went with Frodo, there is immediate relief for Gandalf.
This is dialogue. And then we get "THERE IS A TEMPEST IN ME!!"
"The sea is always right"
Lol!
give me meat and give it to me raw
Such great form here. What could be a dull and vague exposition dump scene comes to life because of how it's presented: Gandalf beseeching Aragorn to step up and fulfill his destiny. McKellen is a huge part of that obviously. He's never not sold a scene in his entire life.
He shows so much emotion just thru his eyes, such a brilliant actor

I really, really love this shot. It feels like something out of a film from the early 70s to the 80s. The way Gandafl stands against the background, of which looks like a 70s matte painting. You're both invested in the shot because of the story and awed at how fantastical it is. Like many have said, many of the shots in these films feel like they could paintings on their own.
Gandalf clearly knows how important Frodo and Sam are to each other. He probably knew it even before they did. And it occurs to him that Frodo might have a chance of making it if Sam is with him, because Sam keeps him grounded within himself, and it's Sam's influence that builds Frodo's strength to resist the Ring. They're two halves of one whole and Gandalf knows it. Ian McKellen conveys it all in three simple words: "Yes, very good."
i love that Gandalf is shocked Sam is with Frodo, but at the same time is like, that's okay, Sam will protect him with everything he's got
This 2 minute clip from Peter Jackson's masterpiece is an immeasurably greater joy to watch than the entirety of Payne's & McKay's Rings of Power shitshow!!!!

It seems to me, gandalf was obviously playing the long game with this entire quest. Movies aside, gandalf was always picking those people usually underestimated by everybody else. In the case of Sam, I think gandalf saw inside Sam the desire to be of service. He was not tempted by the power of the ring the same as frodo, whose identity by the time the book ended became intertwined with the ring. He also saw in Aragorn a desire to be stronger than his forefathers. A quote I remember from a different movie, when you ask to be courageous do you get courage or do you get moments to be courageous? Gandalf I think is the representation of this belief that rather than receiving courage, bravery etc., you are given those opportunities.
the qoute you are refering too was from the movie evan almighty
I always loved how skeptical and nervous Gandalf felt when talking about Frodo in this scene. He’s so anxious and doubtful if Frodo can complete his quest. Then as soon as Aragorn mentions Sam going with Frodo, Gandalf’s face lights up with surprise and relief. He knew Sam was the one person Frodo could truly trust and depend on. Now instead of feeling nervousness and doubt, Gandalf feels a sense of hope and faith.
Seen LOTR so many times but, sitting here, caught myself smiling at the end of the clip. Just art this trilogy :)
I just realised, if Gandalf didn’t know Sam went with Frodo, then where did he think Sam was? He isn’t with them or Merry and Pippin, and Boromir is dead so did he think Sam was just alone out there somwhere?
"I made a promise Mr. Frodo. A promise! Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to, I don't mean to." Oh the look on Gandalf's face when he learns that Sam went with Frodo makes me so happy!
"Very good" is an understatement. The sheer amount of perfectness in this scenes makes me shiver evertime.
Primo acting. Love these movies, and the books written by Tolkien.
My fave Gandalf speech
