Thank goodness that CEO Akio Toyoda is a car enthusiast himself and actively participates in motorsports. Its people like him that we owe respect to, for producing these relatively affordable lightweight RWD manual cars with N.A. engines. That Hakone Edition is such a nice spec with that dark green metallic paint contrasted with its brown tan interior - I hope the GR 86 will come in more metallic colour options in the future. As for the fake engine sound, hopefully its easily disabled like in BMWs. We ought to buy these cars brand new, otherwise companies will give up and instead draw their attention to the more profitable boring SUVs for non car enthusiasts COUGH Mitsubishi COUGH

@@TheTopher Thanks. Great idea to post the comparison between old and new versions. You sure have some driving skills to go with your great reviews. I like it that you always mention what exactly you are driving - which trim level, which tires. Funny that there is a big split among the car reviewers I regularly follow. Some think you are completely missing the boat if you get the "Prius tires", others prefer them. Do you have any details on the weight difference between the stock 17" wheel/tire combo vs the18"? Afew years back, Car and Driver did a test on a Golf with a whole range of wheel tire sizes, and as you got to the bigger wheels, acceleration was negatively impacted. You did mention that the PS 4's are high performance all-season. I have a BRZ Limited with Performance Pack ('17 - so I got Sachs dampers, slightly wider wheels and Brembo brakes ) with the Primacy tires. Mine are summer performance, so I end up having to have a separate set of winter wheels and tires, which are primarily needed just to stay within recommended ambient temperature range. (If there is snow or ice, I can take my SUV). So, for some of us, having all-season could eliminate the need for a second set of tires/wheels. The $ 1500 or so I paid for my Sparco wheels and Blizzaks would likely help bridge the gap between the base and premium. (Of course then I wouldn't get the fun Primacy action). Keep up the great work!

Most so-called car enthusiasts care about if this car has a turbo and what 1/4 mile time it does. I care that we have a relatively affordable car that can be a learning tool to teach us car control, within a modest budget because it is lightweight and uses 215 tyres. I like cars that let you steer with the throttle and help you 'rotate' with minimal steering inputs. I have a '17, and am eying that torque curve with envy. Note however that he thinks this gen has lost a bit of its edge. Although I'm not going to be driving at his level and pushing the limits near as much as he does. But any skill level driver will be able to take advantage of that torque increase and peak being so much more in the range of daily traffic flow. You have to make a loud spectacle of yourself to reach peak torque in the old 2 liter, and then it is more noise than zip relative to the V6 Odyssey's and 2.0 Accords or turbo Sonatas. I love this car and Toyota still got me since my Celica (RIP). The GR86 it's perfect to have fun and economic and still like the GT... Modifications. Mr Toyoda knows how to give his customers' fun with the lowest prices and beautiful cars.
Anyway, automatic and manual are totally different and are used for different reasons but making the 0/100km/h or the best 1km run is (for me) absolutely useless with those cars. You really enjoy it in corners.

Neither are all-season tires. @Jeremy Walters yeah but the interior is just a lot better especially being like the modern version of the original AE86 interior
And also you get more power and more torque in the new GR86 where it is almost instantaneous and it doesn't lose steam either
The big problem with the old GT86 is the torque dip which is why it was perceived as "slow" not saying the old GT86 is a bad car it's a good car for what it is but the GR86 is just better in every way with power delivery, handling, shifting, it's just a better car really to a point where it's actually a Miata killer and is even better than the Miata in every way the numbers really speak for themselves and I'm glad that Toyota and Subaru brought the necessary changes and improvements for the new BRZ and GR86 I need to drive one!

If they just kept the old looks while only doing the engine, chassis, digital speedo, and climate control upgrades, that would've been perfect and we probably would've seen some savings in the MSRP since Toyota and Subaru would not have wasted development money making the car look worse than the previous twins.
