Getting stuck in a hour long traffic jam made me see the value of the automatic. The stick is only fun to drive in a world without bumper to bumper traffic.
People who don't know this definitely have never been stuck in a traffic jam with bumper to bumper conditions where you only move a meter every minute. Sure manual is fun for sure, but let's see if it's fun if you have to have a left leg day every day for 30min - 1 hour during peak traffic hour in major cities.
For everyone who's worried or afraid of manual, honestly just go for it. It's so much fun. I've recently bought a manual for the first time after driving auto for nearly 15 years. It only took me a few days to build muscle memory and it's the best decision I've made, driving wise. So much more engaging!
@@texasclawhammer6578 haha! You'll love it man. Most new cars got anti-rollback systems so you won't have the stress of doing handbrake starts. Beginner tip: little bit of gas first (just as much as you would on an auto to take off from a stop) before releasing the clutch and you'll never stall.
sold. i learned on a manual. been auto ever since(so cal traffic). i may have to shift like 600+ times but i feel when im in my hometown ill enjoy the driving experience.
did you already have knowledge of when to upshift, when to downshift, rev matching etc before buying a manual transmission vehicle? Making a manual transmission car move isn't the issue, its knowing when to upshift and downshift, and coming to a complete stop and then going uphill from a stop, etc that gets to be confusing and overwhelming, especially in real world situations like in traffic. How did you overcome all of that?
Nah. I'm disabled recently, and even though I can physically drive stick, it's not worth it. This isn't some super car, you guys are trying to get way too much out it. Get a Supra.
Definitely make a beginner's tutorial for MT! Also show us how you drive around town and different situations like start-stop in traffic, hill starts etc etc. I've watched your heel toe tutorial and it is awesome, just missing the basics now! I'll be one of those people who will be getting the GR 86 in MT who has driven automatic for years and just now switching to MT and I'm sure I won't be the last one. Also do you think Toyota will upgrade the manual dash a bit, mostly because when you shift, the gears definitely come on late.
Definitely the manual is better for track work (unless it’s a Porsche PDK), however people usually need these cars to drive in a lot of heavy traffic so a manual is a massive pain in the arse.
@@jakeq3530 Does it really matter if you’re more alert in traffic? It’s slow so you’re not going 30 mph trying to watch out if you’re going to hit someone and all you really need to do is watch the car in front of you inch up or see if someone is lane changing in front of you which is pretty easy to see half asleep.

There are lots of good reasons to buy the Automatic like I did. 1. You have an injury that doesn’t allow you to drive a manual 2. Your wife will let you buy it and auto let’s her drive it too 3. Plan to take on long trips and all the goodies are a huge plus 4. Stop and go traffic is a major part of your life 5. It’s still awesome! I have a 2019 BRZ Manual that is tuned and all of that. I bought an Automatic BRZ 2023 yesterday and it is everything I need it to be. Fun, fast enough and the shifts are clean and sport mode is aggressive. Shift with the manual stick mode is better than the paddles and just as good of a launch as my manual BRZ. F all the noise about the Automatic being shit. Car people don’t get that none of us have ever had a Porsche or Supra, you won’t notice. It’s a 30,000 car!
It doesn’t look like you had it in Sport mode. In Sport mode it down shifts when breaking and holds the gears longer. Track mode doesn’t automatically engage sport mode. The 2022 transmission is leaps and bounds better than the 2020.

As far as shifting up is concerned, yeah what you said is right, simple enough. But I think it’s the other stuff we’d like to find out abt and all the little quirks u have to worry abt driving manual
@@HisMajesty99 those are more advanced techniques so I would focus on learning how to start and get through the gears first. Basically heal-toe is rev-matching while braking so I would first try rev matching by itself. Drive along and shift from 4th to 3rd over and over to practice. Then when you get that down you can practice braking and rev matching (heel toe). There’s a good video from the smoking tire teaching how to drive a manual but hopefully Topher will make one too. The more the better!
Nice kid! Learn that manual, don’t get frustrated and put in the seat time. I recommend practicing super early in the morning 5am in an empty parking lot

Atleast with the automatic GT86, you need to have it in sport mode if you are going to use it on track. Track mode doesn’t actually do much or anything at all to the transmission. Put it in sport mode and it is completely different. Something that was killing the experience for you was that it wouldn’t hold the rpms. Put it in sport mode, and it won’t do that. Seems sluggish only Because you had the transmission in regular drive mode. Sport drive mode wakes it up much so much more. Great video and keep up the good work!
I saw that too. He short changed the review because of that. I had the 2020 and now the 2022 auto and the 2022 is a blast in sport mode. Actually the 2020 was fun too but the 2022 is definitely an upgrade
@@richardseaman9086 the auto is slower, upshifts when you don't want, makes the car altogether feel more sluggish, is FAR less fun to drive, costs more, Subaru Eyesight sends your data back to Subaru making it a privacy risk, etc.
Its likely Toyota isnt using a hall effect sensor like other vehicles do for shift indication - and instead using a Speed and RPM calculation - so it needs to wait for the clutch to be fully in for a half second.
This is normal in manual cars. The numbers don't show up until you are fully engaged in gear. Just because your shifter is in 3rd doesn't mean you are actually in 3rd. You have to wait for the clutch. This is the same thing on all manual cars, G80 M3/M4, Subaru STI, Honda Type R, etc.
@@kevinzeng9606 there does seem to be a light delay between where the clutch is fully released (you see it in his leg movement) and where the number changes. like half a second or so. not that it matters, since you should feel the gear you're in and remember it automatically

I’m 6’3 and the auto is so much more comfortable cause that empty area where the clutch would be makes a world of a difference on where I can put my left foot to rest. The auto gr86 was more fun than I thought, just not sure if I would trade for my sti
I'm sensing a slight lag on the tachometer in both the manual and automatic. I'm assuming the cars are still pre-production and haven't worked out all the issues, could be wrong. As for the automatic gear ratios, it's normal for downshifts to be denied at certain RPMs, it's an overrev protection. Those ratios are longer than the manual, especially the final drive.
can confirm the auto has a longer final drive. The downshifts are probably a bit more protected than they need to be, but peak torque is around 3k rpm anyway, so as long as you keep above that, itll be fine
Of course I’d only get this car with the manual transmission. I think if you are going to give a performance car an automatic transmission, it should be a quick shifting and fun automatic that you can actually enjoy like a dct or a zf8. I personally thought the Gti was better with the dsg and the f10 M5 was better with the dct than the manual. I wonder how this car would’ve been with a dct or Zf8, otherwise it just doesn’t make sense to me for such a car.
Can I just ask a question….. in the manual when you shifted to 2nd you were basically always shifting at 50mph. But in the auto you were trying to go into second at 60 mph. But if you kept yourself constant with the shifts like you did in the manual you would have been able to downshift into second at 50mph without having it deny you. The arrow indicator seems to come on at 55mph to allow a downshift near the gear number letting you know where you can downshift. And again it comes on at 30mph to allow downshift into first. If you drove the car knowing the shift points and seen the information given to you for when downshift was allowed could you have been faster in the auto on another lap against your original auto run? It’s easy to trash a car if the system isn’t understood. So an updated video would be appreciated with more experience on understanding it’s dynamics. I can’t go off your opinion of the auto because I clearly saw where your mistakes were made. Driver error isn’t good feedback if you didn’t have an understanding of the system. And if you did have an understanding of the system then it would be a shame to know because then the video could have relayed better information but instead got misguided information. I love your videos keep up the work. But just wanted to point this out because the outcome could have been different in my opinion.
@JT you're both ignorant. There's plenty of reasons. Disability, mileage, traffic. I've driven a manual since my Prelude Si. There's nothing special about it especially these days. The shifting difference is negligible.
The automatic would be awesome if they added a dual clutch or something more advanced than the six speed, the extra weight would be compensated by better gear ratios and speed.
Any car that is isnt insanely fast out the box will be more fun in stick than auto, which is why I would never buy a car that is in that range as an automatic. Even a car with 100hp in manual would be more fun than a 100hp auto even if the auto can do the job better in shifting etc..
If only the manual mode in the automatic would let you shift as you’d like without intervening. But it kinda won’t let you down shift when you’d like it and that its kind of a let down.
For the Automatic. Track mode is like halfway between traction off and traction on, it lets you have more slip before it cuts power. The button on the far left is Sport mode which alters the revs allowing it be higher and down shift itself into higher rpms. I am not sure if it matters if you're in Manual shift mode though, would be a good test. I might have to test this myself when I have time, as I own the first gen automatic and have done track days without much issues. Edit: So I tried out different modes, with Sport mode on and in Manual mode, I still get denied some down shifts. Ideal spirited driving while not in manual mode would be both Sport and Track buttons on driving in "D". Manual mode should be paired with track mode. Overall, get a manual transmission if you plan on doing track days or live in an area that works for you. The auto is really for daily driving with a few weekends on some twisty roads, it's a compromise if you live in a high traffic or hilly area where you have to parallel park on steep hills but still want to throw a fun car around.
My 2c I know the denied downshifts are annoying, but you are downshifting like you would for a first gen…where all the power is above 5k and anything below that is quite useless. The thing is, the new engine has some goodness around 3-4, amazingly. And as you know, the earlier you can put the power down, the better. And you don’t need all the torque right away when you first get on the gas…on a gen1, it’s not enough. But now it is. Plus the gear ratios are longer…so we wait a little longer before downshifting. We finally have oomf low in the rev range. It works.
It doesn’t want to downshift because your shifting too early. I used to do the same in my auto 86 on a track. Once you get used to the ratios (longer than the manual) it is very fluid. If you want to go fast on a track the auto is a perfectly reasonable choice - it makes sense to shift sequentially with both hands on the wheel when you're on the limits.
Let’s face it any transmission is going to take some dialing into especially on a track… I’d be curious to try that WRX cvt! Don’t get them in the UK as far as I know
@@ErockHQ Well barring disabilities there's no reason to get the auto. Even in this video, it was infuriating seeing the auto deny shifts like that. Plus even acceleration is slower than the manual
I actually wanted to buy an automatic GR86, but in Korea, the GR86 is only sold as a manual model and does not have an automatic model, so I bought the manual model. But after watching this video, I can be sure that I made a really good choice. It is cruel that Toyota requires downshifting to 4,000 rpm. In fact, the rpm allows for 2-speed shifting in a manual mode.
I have a feeling the car doesn't let the aggressively downshift unless you're in track mode which he wasn't in until like halfway through the video. If you watch at 5:51 the car downshifts far closer to redline than it would have before he put it in track mode so I don't think the auto is as bad as it first looks.
In the AT, The paddles are not that great... However, In the manual mode shifting with the stick is FAR more responsive than the paddles. Using the stick does not hold you back when trying to downshift etc. The paddles do, For whatever reason.
I want the manual but I'm gonna be going into traffic a lot where I live and I drive on the road a lot so I think its best to get automatic in my situation.
The clutch should be light in these things so it should be easy, I drive manual in traffic and its really not a big deal. You will REGRET getting the automatic trust me.
I've been there. In such situations you actually tune your heel-toe downshifts to perfection. From any gear to the needed one. High revving engines with low torque and autos don't work good together IMO.
I like Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ because it's affordable with reasonable mpg. Now the new one has bigger engine which is more expensive and worse mpg. In JPN zeikin (yearly tax) and shaken (2 year inspection) depends on engine capacity. Some 86/BRZ drivers want bigger engine with turbo for faster acceleration and higher top speed which make others confused. If you want those why don't you modify the the car after you buy it? Most Japanese cars are meant to be modified according to your taste. Or get a Supra. If you still cant' get enough, just get a V8 Mustang.
I think that most buyers won't drive this on the track too often, and rather use it as a daily even. For daily automatic is just better nowadays hence 70% autos.

Older people that want a nimble car that handles nicely without having to row your own gears, basically buying a sporty car for relaxed driving on sunny weekends, Toyota clearly sold enough ATs to put them in the new 86.
I was thinking about it, would make me feel like I'm driving a GT3RS on the back roads if it had a good automatic but transmission in this thing just doesn't want to change gears all that much so probably can't get it. I'm looking for cheap RWD car with a great transmission. For the record, I can drive a stick shift, and have done it for years, I want to try a fast auto, and the only option was this or the Veloster N DCT but that's FWD and I don't want that :(
I'd always pick automatic over manual, it just depends on the type of person you are. I work in IT, I spent most of my time every day automating things, having to do something manually that can be automatic doesn't make sense to me.
I just get bored driving an automatic transmission, and I don’t like the feel or the timing of the gear shifting. This would probably not be the case in a more expensive model but I can spend a lot less and get great performance with a manual transmission.
The shift programming on the auto acts exactly like my 2014 camry, wont let you downshift unless it can put the revs at least like 500 rpm below redline
@@Peter-ff1tp Wont allow you to downshift even into nearly 1k under redline. I've seen the same thing in a lot of Lexus/Toyotas. They just play it super safe/boring when it comes to auto programming.
I would get a manual car but I live in a city so it would be pretty repetitive to shift all the time especially in traffic jams if I lived in somewhere like Rural Texas or maybe a more rural area so I would prefer a Auto than a Manual.
Yes, for the track the manual is the way to go but since most of these cars (>80%) will never see the track the auto is best. Having a manual that never sees the track is like having a car with 500+hp that never sees the drag strip.
getting an auto on this car is missing the point this is not a fast car its quick fun car for what it is but its not super fast and manual just make it far better to drive and far more fun auto will just numb the fun on this car if you want a fun car for this price with a super quick auto its better to look at cars like volkswagen gti with the dsg
I see the automatic gave you some challenges that made you race drive. Which I found it to be more entertaining than the manual. Though realistically these car's are made for driving and not made for tracking.

Much more torque down low and continues to pull to redline. I’d love to line them up sometime soon but until then I’m saying the new GR 86 feels like a noticeably quicker car than one that’s been tuned with a header

As an owner of BRZ 2016 GEN1. I find it very hard to like the digital cluster to be honest. At a racing point of view I love the horizontal tachometer. I wonder if I will like it more when seeing it in real life tho. However, the old gen1 red glowing cluster simply looks amazing in the night. However I think that I will enjoy the 2.4 Liter engine and the bumped up torque dip. Well well Gen 1 and Gen 2 are simply two different sports cars afterall One is timeless the other is modern. I bet that I would miss my gen1 if i change to gen2 :( hard decisions here.
14FRS owner here. I think the 2.4L-86 looks less distinctive and has an overall peak power that is about the same as you would get with a catted header and OFT. I like the new one, but not enough to trade my fully paid low mileage used one. I don't need the torque bump as a downshift gets me more power anyways during normal spirited driving. I think mine makes something like 80 crank hp at 3000rpm so even 25% more is still a negligible amount compared to a downshift. If I were financing a used one at high interest rates, I'd consider selling retail and buying a new one at discounted Toyota/Subaru rates though.
@@dachanist I like your answer. To be honest the 200HP is enough. I can't even use my engine full out without the uncomfort idea to get speed ticket and losed license anyway :). Afterall the car was made to be fun, balanced and direct and thats what it is! Else we could buy a supra.
@@infestedalien If I were you, I would still go for a test-drive for the GR86/BRZ anyway. I prefer analog dials over digital displays too, but I think the stronger engine's more usable torque, and the rigid chassis and lower centre of gravity will far outweigh the negatives I see with this car. Those updates are only things that a manufacturer can do, not the aftermarket. A tuned up GEN1 may be just as fast as the GEN2, but the GEN2 with those same mods will always be pulling away.
@@BRZFA24 Nice one! when I bought my BRZ 2016 (old one, no face lift version) I was able to choose between the face lifted one. But I really liked the old one more in some way. The only thing I miss is not having the oil temp display on the old generation. The modification I've is Tein Flex Z coilovers and HKS Legamax premium catback and sound-generator remove.

While the auto does appear much more lifeless than the manual for sure, the way it sounds and looks like to drive has a racing video game charm to it for me. Reminds me of playing forza like 10 years ago lol
Thank goodness this car is still offered with a manual, as even the resulting video is less visceral with the automatic. It will be interesting to see just how many owners will disable the piped in fake engine sound as soon as they get these home. Overall, this looks like a great job by Subaru/Toyota.
what is the purpose of the fake engine noise inside the cabin? it's a ridiculous feature. i dont know how anyone can enjoy that knowing its fake engine noise
@@kimmichelle8557 This is part of what car makers have come up with for the gaming generation now that they are buying cars. Much of the tech appearing in cars today is there to appease those who can't go more than a few minutes without their smartphones. Cars and driving used to be purely analog in nature, but those days are long gone. From the infotainment systems and the fake engine noises to the LCD instrument panels, manufacturers are just giving the masses what they want, which helps them stay in business.
Shame that toyota dont have fast sporty dualclutch as new hyundai i30N have,(8DCT) toyota still have old hydrodynamic transmission which is not good for sports car... So yes take Toyota with manual :)
@@KiraOniiChan It's your choice of course, but I really don't see the point in getting the automatic. The manual is such a better gearbox, all around. The only reason you'd avoid it is a lack of confidence/practice, which can be learned as a skill. It really makes driving a lot more fun, I promise.

The GR86 Premium was ny first car ive ever owned. I learned manual on it. I dont regret it AT ALL. Its an amazing car. Im loving every second of it. No need to be afraid or manual.
Does anyone know if any tuning will adjust the rev limiter in between shifting? The car definitely needs to be able to hold full gears, at a full rev range limit imo.....

In my young days we were happy to have a car to go grocery shopping, now every young person has track days. I guess we created lots of racers with this new generation, none talk about gas mileage or oil change but they all are racers and must have track days.
its a extremely small subset of the population that are into cars. to most people it is just transportation. many younger people rather just rideshare everywhere and avoid entire cost of car ownership. we are fortunate a car like gr86 even exist anymore...
i need one blew up and swap and h6 3.0l or the 3.6l ether one requires a bit more digging into the two engines and drive car with them to get a bit of a fell of engine power bands be a bit of a help
Automatic is the future. All high end sports cars like Ferraris are auto. This was super impressive given the size of the care. Incredible car with auto + manual mode.
I know you probably don't like the audible gear shift notification, but I could really do with something like that in my mx5. I find it hard to pay attention to the rev counter when my full focus is on the road. I'm surprised there isn't an option like this available outside of an o.e.m installation. I've googled but can only find l.e.d based rev notification kits.
i honestly don't understand the point of offering an automatic if it's going to seriously impact the driving experience like that. now if they made one with a really quick-shifting DCT that would be more interesting, but i guess it would be too expensive to develop + strays away from the concept of simplicity this car was designed around.
Oooh the manual elitists in the comments. The auto actually seems like it's an alright drive, for some spirited driving on fun roads. While making the daily commute easier if it's your only car. While yeah the manual is more suitable for track driving and being "pUrE". I'd still happily choose the auto as I, like a lot of other people can only afford to have the one car and would like something fun to drive. And with that, also has to be used everyday and driven in all conditions. You could argue I'd be better with something like an M240i or a Supra or an i30N and you'd probably be right. Don't forget elitists, some people have injuries or disabilities that may prevent them from being able to drive a manual, are they less of an enthusiast if they buy the automatic 86 because they like the car, the way it drives and are happy to have the auto mainly as they are unable to drive the manual? Absolutely not. Does it make them a worse or lesser driver? Of course not. I'm sure I'll be told I'm wrong by the auto bad crowd. Honestly not sure why it exists when most cars now offer automated gearbox's only and are proving time and time again to be faster, more efficient, putting down the power better and be an overall better drive.
Automatic not good. Looks like you are all over the road. Transmission sucks in automatic. I will take manual transmission any day on a sports car. Specially Toyota or Mazda. Much more fun with manual and and better sense of you are in control of the car.
Toyota is frontin’ with this car as it’s a Subaru. And they are frontin’ with their Supra as it’s a BMW. They don’t make a 2door sports/sporty car they can call their own. Weak sauce it is.

It’s just a question of how often do we go to trucks, or more accurately, do we go to tracks at all. My wife is thinking about 86 automatic and I’m all for that choice. This is a car that can make going to grocery shopping enjoyable and that’s a viable reason for this car to exist. She’ll never go to trucks but she’ll enjoy her driving experience every time she uses her car and I’m happy for her for that.
Still has heavier controls, better steering, doesn’t feel as light and tossable as the Miata, but it’s great to feel similar power out of the 86 now. Basically it comes down to whether you want a convertible or a more practical sports car. I think you’ll have equal amounts of fun in both
It sucks that they don't offer the manual with adaptive cruise, and that the mpg is so different between the two. It's a tough decision if you daily drive the car in traffic, use it for road trips or have a spouse who doesn't do well with manual transmissions (I've tried).
I am not a manual drive, never enjoyed it and prefer automatics. Sadly the auto is pretty meh, especially for an up charge. guess I'll be getting an Elantra N, Really wanted a coupe.

@@texasclawhammer6578 haha! You'll love it man. Most new cars got anti-rollback systems so you won't have the stress of doing handbrake starts. Beginner tip: little bit of gas first (just as much as you would on an auto to take off from a stop) before releasing the clutch and you'll never stall.

did you already have knowledge of when to upshift, when to downshift, rev matching etc before buying a manual transmission vehicle? Making a manual transmission car move isn't the issue, its knowing when to upshift and downshift, and coming to a complete stop and then going uphill from a stop, etc that gets to be confusing and overwhelming, especially in real world situations like in traffic. How did you overcome all of that?
Nah. I'm disabled recently, and even though I can physically drive stick, it's not worth it. This isn't some super car, you guys are trying to get way too much out it. Get a Supra.
Definitely make a beginner's tutorial for MT! Also show us how you drive around town and different situations like start-stop in traffic, hill starts etc etc. I've watched your heel toe tutorial and it is awesome, just missing the basics now! I'll be one of those people who will be getting the GR 86 in MT who has driven automatic for years and just now switching to MT and I'm sure I won't be the last one. Also do you think Toyota will upgrade the manual dash a bit, mostly because when you shift, the gears definitely come on late.

There’s no need to look at the gauges to know what gear you’re in anyway. I’m not sure why it’s even included in the manual model.
Its so easy, if you have even a little understanding of how the manual works you can drive it off the lot fairly easy.
Gear indicator is not required, you always know what gear you're in

Definitely the manual is better for track work (unless it’s a Porsche PDK), however people usually need these cars to drive in a lot of heavy traffic so a manual is a massive pain in the arse.

It’s slow so you’re not going 30 mph trying to watch out if you’re going to hit someone and all you really need to do is watch the car in front of you inch up or see if someone is lane changing in front of you which is pretty easy to see half asleep.

There are lots of good reasons to buy the Automatic like I did. 1. You have an injury that doesn’t allow you to drive a manual 2. Your wife will let you buy it and auto let’s her drive it too 3. Plan to take on long trips and all the goodies are a huge plus 4. Stop and go traffic is a major part of your life 5. It’s still awesome! I have a 2019 BRZ Manual that is tuned and all of that. I bought an Automatic BRZ 2023 yesterday and it is everything I need it to be. Fun, fast enough and the shifts are clean and sport mode is aggressive. Shift with the manual stick mode is better than the paddles and just as good of a launch as my manual BRZ. F all the noise about the Automatic being shit. Car people don’t get that none of us have ever had a Porsche or Supra, you won’t notice. It’s a 30,000 car!

It doesn’t look like you had it in Sport mode. In Sport mode it down shifts when breaking and holds the gears longer. Track mode doesn’t automatically engage sport mode. The 2022 transmission is leaps and bounds better than the 2020.
This and the Miata are cars that getting the manual is a requirement

@@HisMajesty99 those are more advanced techniques so I would focus on learning how to start and get through the gears first. Basically heal-toe is rev-matching while braking so I would first try rev matching by itself. Drive along and shift from 4th to 3rd over and over to practice. Then when you get that down you can practice braking and rev matching (heel toe). There’s a good video from the smoking tire teaching how to drive a manual but hopefully Topher will make one too. The more the better!

Atleast with the automatic GT86, you need to have it in sport mode if you are going to use it on track. Track mode doesn’t actually do much or anything at all to the transmission. Put it in sport mode and it is completely different. Something that was killing the experience for you was that it wouldn’t hold the rpms. Put it in sport mode, and it won’t do that. Seems sluggish only Because you had the transmission in regular drive mode. Sport drive mode wakes it up much so much more. Great video and keep up the good work!

Its likely Toyota isnt using a hall effect sensor like other vehicles do for shift indication - and instead using a Speed and RPM calculation - so it needs to wait for the clutch to be fully in for a half second.

This is normal in manual cars. The numbers don't show up until you are fully engaged in gear. Just because your shifter is in 3rd doesn't mean you are actually in 3rd. You have to wait for the clutch. This is the same thing on all manual cars, G80 M3/M4, Subaru STI, Honda Type R, etc.

Hey Topher, do you have any insight as to the oil temps on the engine after hard track use? And what were the ambient temps? I'm talking like a full sessions will it ever pass, say, 260/270F?
Oil temps were solid all day, never got over 250 with the oem cooler. Besides pads and fluid you’re track day ready in this new gr86.
I’m 6’3 and the auto is so much more comfortable cause that empty area where the clutch would be makes a world of a difference on where I can put my left foot to rest. The auto gr86 was more fun than I thought, just not sure if I would trade for my sti
how do you still feel about the auto?
I'm sensing a slight lag on the tachometer in both the manual and automatic. I'm assuming the cars are still pre-production and haven't worked out all the issues, could be wrong.
As for the automatic gear ratios, it's normal for downshifts to be denied at certain RPMs, it's an overrev protection. Those ratios are longer than the manual, especially the final drive.
can confirm the auto has a longer final drive. The downshifts are probably a bit more protected than they need to be, but peak torque is around 3k rpm anyway, so as long as you keep above that, itll be fine
Of course I’d only get this car with the manual transmission. I think if you are going to give a performance car an automatic transmission, it should be a quick shifting and fun automatic that you can actually enjoy like a dct or a zf8. I personally thought the Gti was better with the dsg and the f10 M5 was better with the dct than the manual. I wonder how this car would’ve been with a dct or Zf8, otherwise it just doesn’t make sense to me for such a car.

Can I just ask a question….. in the manual when you shifted to 2nd you were basically always shifting at 50mph. But in the auto you were trying to go into second at 60 mph. But if you kept yourself constant with the shifts like you did in the manual you would have been able to downshift into second at 50mph without having it deny you. The arrow indicator seems to come on at 55mph to allow a downshift near the gear number letting you know where you can downshift. And again it comes on at 30mph to allow downshift into first. If you drove the car knowing the shift points and seen the information given to you for when downshift was allowed could you have been faster in the auto on another lap against your original auto run? It’s easy to trash a car if the system isn’t understood. So an updated video would be appreciated with more experience on understanding it’s dynamics. I can’t go off your opinion of the auto because I clearly saw where your mistakes were made. Driver error isn’t good feedback if you didn’t have an understanding of the system. And if you did have an understanding of the system then it would be a shame to know because then the video could have relayed better information but instead got misguided information. I love your videos keep up the work. But just wanted to point this out because the outcome could have been different in my opinion.

@JT you're both ignorant. There's plenty of reasons. Disability, mileage, traffic. I've driven a manual since my Prelude Si. There's nothing special about it especially these days. The shifting difference is negligible.
The automatic would be awesome if they added a dual clutch or something more advanced than the six speed, the extra weight would be compensated by better gear ratios and speed.
Any car that is isnt insanely fast out the box will be more fun in stick than auto, which is why I would never buy a car that is in that range as an automatic. Even a car with 100hp in manual would be more fun than a 100hp auto even if the auto can do the job better in shifting etc..
If only the manual mode in the automatic would let you shift as you’d like without intervening. But it kinda won’t let you down shift when you’d like it and that its kind of a let down.
I would buy the automatic so I can turn it into a 40+ mpg RWD hybrid.

For the Automatic.
Track mode is like halfway between traction off and traction on, it lets you have more slip before it cuts power.
The button on the far left is Sport mode which alters the revs allowing it be higher and down shift itself into higher rpms. I am not sure if it matters if you're in Manual shift mode though, would be a good test.
I might have to test this myself when I have time, as I own the first gen automatic and have done track days without much issues.
Edit: So I tried out different modes, with Sport mode on and in Manual mode, I still get denied some down shifts. Ideal spirited driving while not in manual mode would be both Sport and Track buttons on driving in "D". Manual mode should be paired with track mode. Overall, get a manual transmission if you plan on doing track days or live in an area that works for you. The auto is really for daily driving with a few weekends on some twisty roads, it's a compromise if you live in a high traffic or hilly area where you have to parallel park on steep hills but still want to throw a fun car around.
Yeah it's the auto for me with this LA traffic and some fun canyon driving. No track days for me.

I know the denied downshifts are annoying, but you are downshifting like you would for a first gen…where all the power is above 5k and anything below that is quite useless.
The thing is, the new engine has some goodness around 3-4, amazingly. And as you know, the earlier you can put the power down, the better. And you don’t need all the torque right away when you first get on the gas…on a gen1, it’s not enough. But now it is.
Plus the gear ratios are longer…so we wait a little longer before downshifting. We finally have oomf low in the rev range. It works.
peak torque is around 3k or so surprisingly. genuinely a non issue on the 86 auto

It doesn’t want to downshift because your shifting too early. I used to do the same in my auto 86 on a track. Once you get used to the ratios (longer than the manual) it is very fluid. If you want to go fast on a track the auto is a perfectly reasonable choice - it makes sense to shift sequentially with both hands on the wheel when you're on the limits.
Let’s face it any transmission is going to take some dialing into especially on a track… I’d be curious to try that WRX cvt! Don’t get them in the UK as far as I know

I actually wanted to buy an automatic GR86, but in Korea, the GR86 is only sold as a manual model and does not have an automatic model, so I bought the manual model.
But after watching this video, I can be sure that I made a really good choice.
It is cruel that Toyota requires downshifting to 4,000 rpm.
In fact, the rpm allows for 2-speed shifting in a manual mode.

If you watch at 5:51 the car downshifts far closer to redline than it would have before he put it in track mode so I don't think the auto is as bad as it first looks.

In the AT, The paddles are not that great... However, In the manual mode shifting with the stick is FAR more responsive than the paddles. Using the stick does not hold you back when trying to downshift etc. The paddles do, For whatever reason.

The clutch should be light in these things so it should be easy, I drive manual in traffic and its really not a big deal. You will REGRET getting the automatic trust me.
I've been there. In such situations you actually tune your heel-toe downshifts to perfection. From any gear to the needed one. High revving engines with low torque and autos don't work good together IMO.

I like Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ because it's affordable with reasonable mpg. Now the new one has bigger engine which is more expensive and worse mpg. In JPN zeikin (yearly tax) and shaken (2 year inspection) depends on engine capacity. Some 86/BRZ drivers want bigger engine with turbo for faster acceleration and higher top speed which make others confused. If you want those why don't you modify the the car after you buy it? Most Japanese cars are meant to be modified according to your taste. Or get a Supra. If you still cant' get enough, just get a V8 Mustang.
I think that most buyers won't drive this on the track too often, and rather use it as a daily even. For daily automatic is just better nowadays hence 70% autos.

Older people that want a nimble car that handles nicely without having to row your own gears, basically buying a sporty car for relaxed driving on sunny weekends, Toyota clearly sold enough ATs to put them in the new 86.
I was thinking about it, would make me feel like I'm driving a GT3RS on the back roads if it had a good automatic but transmission in this thing just doesn't want to change gears all that much so probably can't get it. I'm looking for cheap RWD car with a great transmission. For the record, I can drive a stick shift, and have done it for years, I want to try a fast auto, and the only option was this or the Veloster N DCT but that's FWD and I don't want that :(

I'd always pick automatic over manual, it just depends on the type of person you are. I work in IT, I spent most of my time every day automating things, having to do something manually that can be automatic doesn't make sense to me.

I just get bored driving an automatic transmission, and I don’t like the feel or the timing of the gear shifting. This would probably not be the case in a more expensive model but I can spend a lot less and get great performance with a manual transmission.
The shift programming on the auto acts exactly like my 2014 camry, wont let you downshift unless it can put the revs at least like 500 rpm below redline

I would get a manual car but I live in a city so it would be pretty repetitive to shift all the time especially in traffic jams if I lived in somewhere like Rural Texas or maybe a more rural area so I would prefer a Auto than a Manual.
Yes, for the track the manual is the way to go but since most of these cars (>80%) will never see the track the auto is best. Having a manual that never sees the track is like having a car with 500+hp that never sees the drag strip.

As an owner of BRZ 2016 GEN1. I find it very hard to like the digital cluster to be honest. At a racing point of view I love the horizontal tachometer. I wonder if I will like it more when seeing it in real life tho. However, the old gen1 red glowing cluster simply looks amazing in the night. However I think that I will enjoy the 2.4 Liter engine and the bumped up torque dip. Well well Gen 1 and Gen 2 are simply two different sports cars afterall One is timeless the other is modern. I bet that I would miss my gen1 if i change to gen2 :( hard decisions here.
14FRS owner here. I think the 2.4L-86 looks less distinctive and has an overall peak power that is about the same as you would get with a catted header and OFT. I like the new one, but not enough to trade my fully paid low mileage used one. I don't need the torque bump as a downshift gets me more power anyways during normal spirited driving. I think mine makes something like 80 crank hp at 3000rpm so even 25% more is still a negligible amount compared to a downshift. If I were financing a used one at high interest rates, I'd consider selling retail and buying a new one at discounted Toyota/Subaru rates though.
@@dachanist I like your answer. To be honest the 200HP is enough. I can't even use my engine full out without the uncomfort idea to get speed ticket and losed license anyway :). Afterall the car was made to be fun, balanced and direct and thats what it is! Else we could buy a supra.
@@infestedalien If I were you, I would still go for a test-drive for the GR86/BRZ anyway. I prefer analog dials over digital displays too, but I think the stronger engine's more usable torque, and the rigid chassis and lower centre of gravity will far outweigh the negatives I see with this car. Those updates are only things that a manufacturer can do, not the aftermarket. A tuned up GEN1 may be just as fast as the GEN2, but the GEN2 with those same mods will always be pulling away.
If money wasn’t an issue I would have bought the 2016 Series.Hyperblue, 2017+ with the performance package (which I do have) and the 2nd gen.
@@BRZFA24 Nice one! when I bought my BRZ 2016 (old one, no face lift version) I was able to choose between the face lifted one. But I really liked the old one more in some way. The only thing I miss is not having the oil temp display on the old generation. The modification I've is Tein Flex Z coilovers and HKS Legamax premium catback and sound-generator remove.

im just here to see all the gatekeeping comments telling people that auto is bad and not considering the fact that maybe they either live in a high-traffic area or have a condition that prevents shifting
While the auto does appear much more lifeless than the manual for sure, the way it sounds and looks like to drive has a racing video game charm to it for me. Reminds me of playing forza like 10 years ago lol
Thank goodness this car is still offered with a manual, as even the resulting video is less visceral with the automatic. It will be interesting to see just how many owners will disable the piped in fake engine sound as soon as they get these home. Overall, this looks like a great job by Subaru/Toyota.

@@kimmichelle8557 This is part of what car makers have come up with for the gaming generation now that they are buying cars. Much of the tech appearing in cars today is there to appease those who can't go more than a few minutes without their smartphones. Cars and driving used to be purely analog in nature, but those days are long gone. From the infotainment systems and the fake engine noises to the LCD instrument panels, manufacturers are just giving the masses what they want, which helps them stay in business.
Shame that toyota dont have fast sporty dualclutch as new hyundai i30N have,(8DCT) toyota still have old hydrodynamic transmission which is not good for sports car... So yes take Toyota with manual :)

@@KiraOniiChan It's your choice of course, but I really don't see the point in getting the automatic. The manual is such a better gearbox, all around. The only reason you'd avoid it is a lack of confidence/practice, which can be learned as a skill. It really makes driving a lot more fun, I promise.

The GR86 Premium was ny first car ive ever owned. I learned manual on it. I dont regret it AT ALL. Its an amazing car. Im loving every second of it. No need to be afraid or manual.
Does anyone know if any tuning will adjust the rev limiter in between shifting? The car definitely needs to be able to hold full gears, at a full rev range limit imo.....

In my young days we were happy to have a car to go grocery shopping, now every young person has track days. I guess we created lots of racers with this new generation, none talk about gas mileage or oil change but they all are racers and must have track days.
Not around here, I think few people do track days, they just drive hard on the street-especially at night.
its a extremely small subset of the population that are into cars. to most people it is just transportation. many younger people rather just rideshare everywhere and avoid entire cost of car ownership. we are fortunate a car like gr86 even exist anymore...
i need one blew up and swap and h6 3.0l or the 3.6l ether one requires a bit more digging into the two engines and drive car with them to get a bit of a fell of engine power bands be a bit of a help
Funny on the FRS/86 overall sales only 33% choose the manual, while on the BRZ camp it’s 70%.

Automatic is the future. All high end sports cars like Ferraris are auto. This was super impressive given the size of the care. Incredible car with auto + manual mode.
I know you probably don't like the audible gear shift notification, but I could really do with something like that in my mx5.
I find it hard to pay attention to the rev counter when my full focus is on the road.
I'm surprised there isn't an option like this available outside of an o.e.m installation.
I've googled but can only find l.e.d based rev notification kits.
i honestly don't understand the point of offering an automatic if it's going to seriously impact the driving experience like that. now if they made one with a really quick-shifting DCT that would be more interesting, but i guess it would be too expensive to develop + strays away from the concept of simplicity this car was designed around.

The auto actually seems like it's an alright drive, for some spirited driving on fun roads. While making the daily commute easier if it's your only car.
While yeah the manual is more suitable for track driving and being "pUrE". I'd still happily choose the auto as I, like a lot of other people can only afford to have the one car and would like something fun to drive. And with that, also has to be used everyday and driven in all conditions. You could argue I'd be better with something like an M240i or a Supra or an i30N and you'd probably be right.
Don't forget elitists, some people have injuries or disabilities that may prevent them from being able to drive a manual, are they less of an enthusiast if they buy the automatic 86 because they like the car, the way it drives and are happy to have the auto mainly as they are unable to drive the manual? Absolutely not. Does it make them a worse or lesser driver? Of course not. I'm sure I'll be told I'm wrong by the auto bad crowd.
Honestly not sure why it exists when most cars now offer automated gearbox's only and are proving time and time again to be faster, more efficient, putting down the power better and be an overall better drive.

Automatic not good. Looks like you are all over the road. Transmission sucks in automatic. I will take manual transmission any day on a sports car. Specially Toyota or Mazda. Much more fun with manual and and better sense of you are in control of the car.
Toyota is frontin’ with this car as it’s a Subaru.
And they are frontin’ with their Supra as it’s a BMW.
They don’t make a 2door sports/sporty car they can call their own. Weak sauce it is.

when you want the car for an daily driver and some occasional track driver then automatic is superior to manual, also automatic isnt slow (atleast it didnt feel slow to me, when i test drove one)
Wonder if using the stick when seq shifting in AT is faster than paddle shifters

It’s just a question of how often do we go to trucks, or more accurately, do we go to tracks at all. My wife is thinking about 86 automatic and I’m all for that choice. This is a car that can make going to grocery shopping enjoyable and that’s a viable reason for this car to exist. She’ll never go to trucks but she’ll enjoy her driving experience every time she uses her car and I’m happy for her for that.
How would you say this new 86 compares to the current Miata in terms of driving around town and on the track?
Still has heavier controls, better steering, doesn’t feel as light and tossable as the Miata, but it’s great to feel similar power out of the 86 now. Basically it comes down to whether you want a convertible or a more practical sports car. I think you’ll have equal amounts of fun in both

It sucks that they don't offer the manual with adaptive cruise, and that the mpg is so different between the two. It's a tough decision if you daily drive the car in traffic, use it for road trips or have a spouse who doesn't do well with manual transmissions (I've tried).
