I'm buying a GR86 in 2 to 3 years. I've had an NA Miata. The Miata is hard to live with in a few ways. It is cramped inside. Soft top wind noise is extreme in the highways. It's so small that SUVs and trucks don't see you when they make a turn into your lane. The GR86 is a smallish car, but it is way better to live with than a Miata.
Best of luck on your journey 🤟
Just to warn you, the wind noise in the GR86 is just as bad as said by many reviewers/owners.
@@piercetm its better than a miata at least haha
@@ciello___8307 we will see lol
its is bad but nothing a good exhaust or sound system wont fix.
i own a 2020 wrx but am intrigued by the brz especially the simplicity and smaller lighter frame, the more squashed into the drivers seat the better for me
same here. really considering a trade in.
Owned both. I can confidently say I prefer the brz/frs by far
currently looking into changing my 2017 wrx but I feel like I can't get rid of the AWD it is just to good in the snow and I get lots of it for 4-5 months a year
@@shootstraight91 Then even I would reccomend for you to stick with the WRX or consider other AWD car options. The FRS isn't the best in the snow, I have driven it up to the mountains a multiple times and have always struggled around the snow due to it's light weight RWD
Thank for actually driving the car like it was intended. I felt the speed for a minute there!
To those who sees this comment, Happy New Year, and I hope a better year for you awaits in which you will live your dreams and acheive your goals. Hopefully we can correct our mistakes, analyze what we did in the past and walk for the better path in the upcoming year. MilesPrHr, keep up ur content!
thanks bro

@@davidgrantphelps1944 yeah he may not actually car but at the end of the day he’s tryna be positive? Why should we meet any positivity with negativity? There’s already so much negativity even if the positivity isn’t completely genuine I’d rather see positive messages then negative ones cause we could all use some positivity I think :)
@@davidgrantphelps1944 Lol I am not a Christian and hoping for internet points. Im just a regular guy hoping the best for everybody.
I’m loving this thing lately! Just a simple sporty coupe not too much chrome and just basic I love it
I was honestly looking for this vid on your channel last night then I wake up to a pov uploaded, perfect timing
To me, the 86 is a kind of goldilocks car - Something like the Civic Si or a VW GTI would easily be more practical, but both are front-wheel drive. The MX-5 is an incredible driver's car, but for some, the wind noise for the soft top may not be desirable, and to say it's storage capacity is small would be an understatment. The 86 is a great compromise, though the best solution is to do what I did - Get the 86, then convince your partner to get the GTI.
I'd call that a pretty accurate description!
It’s interesting you mention the GTI. I have a 2019 GTI Rabbit MT, and I love it. Great to drive, and more than practical. However, it is no substitute for the unique, more “thrilling” driving feel of a RWD sports car. Before my GTI, I had an 2015 FRS and it was so much fun! But didn’t make sense for my household vehicles dynamic. In an ideal situation, I would totally get the new GR86. That’s not to say the GTI isn’t fun by any means though. Just a different kind of fun in a FWD😉👍🏼
@@davidbugarin Oh, absolutely. I find the thrill of the GTI is more in the raw torque the EA888 puts out, and even the admittedly muted turbo spool is something that never gets old. And for long trips, nothing beats it out - Quiet on the freeway with comfortable suspension means that you can go hours and hours without getting tired.
But for canyon carving or even spirited driving, the 86 is a more refined, controlled experience. The handling is just sublime, and it sits as a blank canvas - Enjoyable on its own, or with any of a number of aftermarket solutions depending on what you want to improve.
They both have their place and their time, and it's a blessing to have both in my garage. ;)
@@MilesPerHr Excellent review. 👍 I getting a BRZ later this year. Where was this video filmed, I like the scenery and curves.
Great review. I just found your channel and really liked how relaxed and casually you talked about everything. I really want to get myself a GR86 in the future and thanks to you I'm now less sad that we in Europe won't be getting the new Nissan Z.
I'm glad you found the channel and enjoyed the video!
This video pushed me over the edge I want this car now
I finally ordered one and its the GR 86 10th Anniversary Edition in Solar Shift! I’m so excited. I’m not a very proficient in manual driving but I mustered the courage to learn more when I get it!
Thank for the good quality video alway!!❤️
Thanks for the video, great in camera/road views. It was a lovely distraction from the daily grind. i own an '13 brz and i really love it. i havent found anything since that has made me want to get a new car...but if we were living in normal times i may consider just swapping it out for the newer version.
Glad you liked the video! Give this or the new BRZ a test drive and you might be convinced to upgrade
I want a used gt86; for me is enougth but im sure the gr86 is better of course!
This car has just been up’d a level. I call it the Dino treatment. They did the same with the Dino 206 going to the famous Dino 246. And similar again with the 944 going on to be the 944 S2, just making an already amazing recipe better with more torque and a little more bhp.
So I have read nothing but banner reviews about the BRZ / FRS / GR86 since they were released. I know there have been some changes over the last couple years to make them even better. One thing that crushes me though is that I haven’t ever been able to drive one. I guess I will just have to live vicariously through your epic walk around bru.
Why haven’t you been able to drive one? Have you gone to a dealership to test drive one?
@@kennymartinez8418 I just haven’t had the opportunity. I really need to just set a time and go to it specifically test one. I’ve gone out and looked, but haven’t had the opportunity to test drive one. No valid excuse though. I need to just go do it.
I'm glad you enjoyed my video! But you gotta schedule a test drive :)
@@MilesPerHr you are telling me! Maybe once the weather clears out in Utah!
@@P4SDetails I just went out for a drive in my GT86 and lost the rear a few times. Larry Miller Toyota has 3 GR’s in stock but they’re automatics so not interested in those.
My first car is a 22 Corolla but I hope to move on to a gr86 sometime in the future before 2030. This seems like such an awesome car!
Test drove one the other day and let me tell you, that gearbox is a joy lol, smooth as silk imo
First time watching one of your videos. You actually drive the car, and for that you get a sub.
I appreciate that! Thanks for subbing.
I’m interested to see what Mazda does to compete with this eventually. The nd2 made some good improvements over the nd1 as it stands
I know about all the greatest sports cars and super cars out there and yet, I don't have a stronger desire than the one I have for the 86 ❤️
This is a true driver's car - it's worthy of the desire.
@@MilesPerHr Yes! I certainly got that vibe from your video! And thanks man! ✨ Keep up the good work! :o

i just got the new brz, and i like the gr86 front end better, but the red brz interior is just so much better in every way
Thank you!
Great video
I got dizzy from camera angel , hope u make it better, but love ur vids man keep it up
It's really the feel of driving thanks
greetings from Germany
WE just get the the GR86
But better than nothing =)
good video
probably best review I've seen so far 🤙
Thanks for the support!
I got a 2018 civic Si recently and I gotta say, I love that car, it's the sedan, 1.5T 6spd manual, 205hp and 192torque, it's crazy fast in sport mode but also very controllable ( it's better to just experience it first hand ), and its an amazing daily driver with excellent power on demand when you gotta pass that pesky base model civic in the fast lane, and there's a ton of mods for the car. My choices were a BRZ ( got sold ): ) focus ST ( also sold ) and the civic Si which is what I got and it's the best purchase I've made in buying a car.
Should try a gold r stage 2 awd lol those are beast
That GR 86 2022 is my dream car.
“The changes they made to this rack are amazing!” 😂
That’s probably a great beginners car for people learning to drive manual. It LIGHTS UP tryna tell you to change gear . Crazy’🤯! I loved my frs but def small! I had to get the wrx but sometimes miss being able to get in tight places 😎
They underrated the power this gen compared to last.
All the dynos coming out show the car makes 210whp which is probably closer to 240-250hp crank.
What dyno? Dynapack or mustang?

I’m glad it’s a little faster than the old one because the old one was too slow. I gapped one in my dads stock civic si with the 1.5t. Same hp by the extra torque blew it away
i flinch every time he drops his entire hand and arm on the shift knob.
It looks like it moves pretty fast. Nice.
I am so in love with this car
I’m just happy with real air vents that aren’t just for show

It's like the spirit of the Lotus Elise with the brains and scale of Toyota
this is s sports car that not only can teach the budding driver, but can allow the seasoned veteran to absolutely dice up far more powerful and expensive cars.
Recently bought limited black line edition 2015 86😍
Both Throttle House and Hagerty raced the new 86 with the ND2 and the 86 won both times. Just an FYI
great vid!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it
I currently have a 2020 MX-5 Club, and I put down a deposit for a GR86 yesterday. While the Miata is a great car, I just don't think I'm a convertible-type person. It was nice to try out, but not for me. I was actually trying to get a Camaro 2SS 1LE, as I've never had a V8 before and I wanted to try one out before they disappear, but my dealer submitted my order back in mid-November, and as of yet it hasn't been accepted by GM and the dealership has no idea when, or if, they'll get an allocation. The GR86 was my second choice because I briefly had a 2018 BRZ that I loved (before it was totaled in an accident), so I know I'll enjoy getting into the upgraded model. I'm actually keeping both the orders for the Camaro and the GR86 open, and I'll grab whichever car gets built first. Both these cars seem to be in such high demand that even if they both get built, I don't foresee the dealerships having any trouble selling whichever one I don't take.
I was debating on trading in my 2019 for a Pavement Grey 2022… This video made me go out down the deposit now
I just wait 2 months 🙏🏼
I have a 2019 Wrx and I’m honestly thinking of trading it in for one of these 😎
5:09 I thought this man was cruising in Minecraft with that tree on the left of the road
Went and got me a Cadillac CT5 2021. New and love it. My girl got the 86 in Neptune blue. This car is fun to drive. Sport mode just gives you that manual feel. Think better she went auto, a lot more rare and wider market for resell.
I came here just to say that I always hated the old design with the overly sharp headlights and whatever the tail lights were supposed to be and think this new design is so much easier on the eyes and more luxurious
Always love your content mate . Happy New Year Guys .
Thank you, and Happy New Year!
This might have to be purchased
I CANNOT WAIT. GET MY RAVEN BLACK in a week or two.LFGGGG
Over 6000 miles in my '19 mx-5 rf and average 30.8mpg mostly city driving.
I’d love to get one of these but I just hate the exhaust sound. Not like my Miata is any better. It certainly looks more livable.
Looks really fun to drive
It was a blast!
That horn is what all Japanese cars sounded like before the 90s! Japanese classic!!! I’m 46 and remember those as new
Good context, thank you!
Nice rev
Thanks!
I just hate that i live in Texas where theres no twisty roads and its all about straight line speed if not i would buy one in a heartbeat
i need to buy one
It looks a very interesting entry level sport car. Nice review! What about the acceleration? Is it powerful at all the range?
The acceleration is good for this price point, but with this car (like the Miata), it's way more than a 0-60 car. It's a joy to drive at all speeds.
Those wheels look amazing although they’re really narrow
I really like the fatter look than the previous gen. What I don’t like is the piped in sounds.
Easy removal, either a cable to detach or dealership does on computer
*Whoops, lol. I watched this entire video and thought it was Topher. Didn't know there was another channel doing this. hahaha!*
😂 Topher makes great videos. Just offering a different perspective.
@@MilesPerHr *Yeah, I'll be watching your videos too now.*
that horn lol
the sound is simulated but it can be easily unplugged
This looks like plenty of car for a 4 cyl price wise and handsome looking perfect young man car or enthusiast car and it’s Toyota good build honestly that’s a gift in the world where cars are going electric and boring they keeping things og with this .. taking us back to the days when they have you allot in a car for fair money I will be keeping a eye on this one ☝️
The driver seat is not one motion to move it forward because you don’t want to lose your seat setting when your just putting your jacket in the backseat.
This looks so much better than the Subaru BRZ. Nice.
im getting this car
11:36, it's funny to hear you talk about starting prices when here in Canada the 86 starts at $1,995 more than the BRZ... I hate that I had to love the 86's styling more than the BRZ's
I didn't realize that! Darn!
@@MilesPerHr Canadians are getting quite a deal on the BRZ. After currency conversion it comes to about $22,800 USD for the base BRZ.Of course they are sold out. About $25,500 for the one you tested.Phenominal deal. Your mountain road drive was exactly what this car is about. Total balance in this package.
Very comprehensive
santiago canyon?? anyways awesome review!
The dashboard reminds me a lot of the mr2 spider
Back end reminds me of 9th gen accord coupe
How are the head gaskets on these new Subaru motors I wonder, otherwise this would be an instant buy for me.
if you plan on leaving it n/a, you’re fine.
If you want to boost it… good luck
I’ve heard disabling the horn shaves .5 seconds off the 0-60. Haha freaking scooter horn.

This dude is the Gordon Ramsay of cars
😆 I'll take it!
I think the opposite, as far as which package you should get (base or premium). Since it is rare to find this car without a bs markup right now, you're actually smarter getting the base package and upgrading from there.
Toyota - the only car brand that actually knows what's good and listens to the customers (Mazda too).
This guy is having too much fun with this car
Not going to deny that!
So the nissan Z is a better car overall. How much was it after markups?
i buy the GR86 as daily in snow lol

Can’t wait to see the turbo builds with this car 😍
You're almost certainly not going to see anything that's bolt-on + pump gas. The engine is strung out. Piston swaps or E85 will be necessary to make significant gains.
Just buy a Supra at that point
@@404nobrakes Greddy/Trust and HKS both have turbo kits in development and they're already touting 320whp on pump gas and low boost. HKS also has a centrifugal supercharger kit making 300whp.
There's nothing "strung out" about this motor just yet, as no one knows the limits of the engine.
Also an FYI - the FA24 turbo that is in the Subaru Ascent, is practically the same except block - just with no turbo. Which already comes built with forged internals.
It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that the upper limit of this N/A block, with a bolt-on turbo kit is roughly 400hp. In a car that weighs right just under 3000lbs and with its small dimensions - is plenty to make the car feel REALLY good.
The magic number people were begging for in a Turbo FRS/86/BRZ - is 280-300hp. Which is definitely doable.
@@michaels4640 Yes let us pay nearly $200,000 for a chassis and engine not worth anywhere near that much. Supras are nowhere near the best car to turbocharge regardless.
@@mrthangowme I meant the new surpras. The GR86 is basically a lower version of the 2.0 Supra. That’s what Toyota did and why they didn’t turbo this car because then no one would buy the Supra.
I don't know if I want to make this decision, but this GR86 is showing how amazing it is (especially for a beginner it seems) and for a first car its kinda intriguing to me. What the h do I do lol?
This video is fantastic at highlighting the car and what it can do on a normal road.
It's a great first car!
Who can afford $30k as a first car?
@@yungrichnbroke5199 realistically you don’t pay $30k all at once so it isn’t too bad. As long as you have a stable job it really ain’t that bad!! All depends on where you want your money to go lol
bro what were those gear selections at the end LOL
My brain turning off 😂
Your thoughts on AT? Now a days automatic has gotten so much better.
I've been seeing a lot more good things about the 86 over the BRZ so I'd like to know which one is better
86’has dealer markup. BRZ doesn’t.
It's all going to be personal preference on the subtle styling differences and paint colors
I’ve never had a problem with my 2014 FR-S drifting on canyon roads at high speeds. Still have the original Primacy tires. Turn a sharp corner fast and it drifts like crazy, but that is the joy of having this car.

best car ever
Whats the best year for your buck with these cars? I think ive heard the 2016 ones werent too hot but the newer 2020+ ones are really nice. But i'm unsure and would like a consensus. Thanks :D
its really 2017+ are the nicer ones. anything past that is practically the same other than carplay in the headunit after like 2020 or something.
starting with the 2017 model year they did a slight refresh by retuning the suspension, 5 more hp, gear ratio, gauge cluster, and a few other things that you can look up. things like the gear ratio
if you plan on on doing a lot of aftermarket stuff or don't care for quality of life things, it's probably better for you to stick with the pre-2017 models as you might change oem parts that have been updated like the headunit or suspension. but getting something very close to new like a 2020 or 2021 is not worth it to me as it's basically the same as a 2017 other than the age of the car and the likelihood of less mileage on it. 2015 also gets some updated stuff on certain trims i think like the key and a backup camera i think. not so sure on this part though.
i would also avoid the 2013 model year as it is the first production year and there were a few recalls with some not so major issues but possibly annoying ones like "crickets" and taillight condensation. if the previous owner never had this fixed it could end up becoming your issue.
also don't forget about the trim levels. theres 2 main trim levels (there's some exclusive trim levels after 2015 that you might find interesting but are much pricier but are somewhat track ready if that interests you such as the series blue or hakone). premium is the lower trim and limited is the upper with lots of mostly quality of life upgrades like push to start/keyless entry, spoiiler, leather seats, and dual hvac.
i have not really heard any issues that are very year specific but i could be wrong. so i think best value is 2014-2015 brz with the limited trim.
this is all still my opinion from personal experience and reading other peoples thoughts on their specific setup so don't take it all as fact but i hope this helps.
@@lecrackin1687 thanks man! :D
edit: saw how much you put into that reply. tysm
The Toyota has it's suspension set up to have less understeer and be more tail happy than the Subaru...
nice road。。。nice car
Where do you drive in Texas? I don't know enough places here in the DFW area.
Love the flickability of the gr86. Did you hit those slides on track mode or traction off mode?
i would assume track mode off but even with tc on it can slide out in wet conditions or based on the camber of the road because of those 215s
