      Pretty well said. A bit more a throwback and more analog/visceral and not as video game-ish as modern cars. It was the flaws of cars of yesteryear like Lotus Elan, several British sportscars from Jag to Triumph to MG including old Corvettes, Alphas, Fiat Spider etc that gave them their character. Perfection as it turns out can be a bit boring aka BMW.

      Same here, sounds just fine to me. I'm more shocked at the fact Toyota piped in the fake engine sound in a car like this. I imagine they will remove it altogether in the years to come or at least have a way for us to turn it off.

    • @ARentz07
      @ARentz07 2 года назад +25

      @@mikea5205 I think it's pretty clear that many manufacturers think "louder = better" even if it's fake sound. Enthusiasts, for the most part, hate the fake sound, which is what the auto makers are failing to acknowledge. On the other hand, if you're driving the car "normally" or just not an enthusiast, you might not care about the fake sound. I'll throw my wife under the bus here and say she falls in this category haha. She thinks her 330i sounds really nice. I will admit, at low RPM the piped-in sound is okay, not offensive, but anything over 4k RPM and it sounds like a video game sound effect. Kinda takes me out of the experience of driving. On the other hand, in my IS 350 I can disable the fake sound, which I do because it's not needed.

    • @nah3193

      Engine sounds through speakers always sound muffled to me. Recording the engine sound and playing it through car speakers(which are from a studio monitor) on top of the actual engine sound is a terrible idea. You'd really need to EQ out a bunch of interfering frequencies to make them stack well. I think it'll get better over time. I bet electric cars will sound cool at some point too.

      @potatochobit 2 года назад +1

      well, if your goal is to be a cheap @ss you should have just bought an old used corvette.
      the GR86 is a great value but dont think it is a cheap car considering they are over 30,000$ out the door and keep in mind if your goal is performance you could have had a brand new veloster N which may not be as fun "subjectively" but will certainly stomp the GR86 on a real track course.
      the goal here is "compromise" in cost, performance and value.

    • @garboi8976
      @garboi8976 2 года назад +9

      @@potatochobit but I want a new car. The veloster N (which I heavily considered) costs 33,000 before markup and taxes and fees for the what I want. The GR86 was 30,300 before all of that. Not to mention the Toyota dealership near me does $0 markup. The only place with a velostern N within any reasonable distance to me was $3k over on just a 1.6t r spec. They told me it would be close to 40k for an N. So not only did I save money getting the 86, which I bought cash, I also got a more enjoyable car. I drove a type R which was not as fun as this and couldn’t drift. I can’t find any new rwd car in a good trim level for this price. Also I have seen several blown theta II series engines at my shop and they are not impressive in any regards internally. That’s another thing that pushed me away from the veloster N. The average new price of a car is $47,100. So yeah I’d say it was pretty cheap. Let me know if I misunderstood you. I took what you said as saying the Gr86 is not worth the money, which I disagree with. If you don’t mind used, a C6 is great. But you also have no new features and who knows how it was treated.

    It takes about 5 minutes to just disconnect the noise generator on your own. You open the passenger door and pop off the side dash cover. Sound box is visible. Reach in and unplug connector. Tape connector to something so it won't rattle. Done. I don't automatically hate sound generators, but this one seemed especially artificial to me and overly loud at high rpm. Engine sound is much better without it.

    7:55 "and we need to stop equating power numbers with fun" THANK YOU! I couldn't agree more with this. People these days always associate more power for more fun but it's not the case at all. How could you ever enjoy a 800hp car with an automatic on normal roads? You're just gonna go all over the place. It's all about the status quo of saying "yeah it has a lot of hp and goes 0-60 in very few seconds". These aren't real car enthusiast. They're just posers. That's not how we should see fun in cars at all. Just this morning I had an argument with someone who was comparing the Porsche GT3 with the GT2 RS, by telling me that the "GT2 goes faster because it's turboed". I told him that why would you ever need 700hp on a lightweight car?! You'll just spin and oversteer every second. Plus it doesn't have high RPMs and it doesn't have a manual. The GT3 is naturally aspirated, so it revs up to 9000rpm, with 500hp or so, still a lot but way better and more than enough and it has a manual transmission. Just like that, the GR86 is the perfect recipe for fun. Well enough power and good torque distribution, manual transmission and RWD with a diff and perfect weight distribution. I love this car so much.

    • @chady7009
      @chady7009 2 года назад +6

      Totally agree. With these high horsepower typically expensive cars, where are you going to be able to fully ring out the car? The race track maybe, but on the street the most you can experience is raw acceleration. Is that all there is to driving? Hell no. The GR 86 is an aspirational car for myself, something with due time I can afford, and not to far off. Sure a Ferrari is cool, but its it a true driving machine or a status symbol.

Good on Toyota for taking the future of Naturally-Aspirated sportscars seriously. The GR grill is much much MUCH more aggressive and beautiful.

    Thank you for providing such clear and logical reviews/feedback targeted towards “everyday drivers”. I’ve been flip flopping constantly between looking for a used Cayman or a brand new GR86/BRZ. Porsche resale values have gone up considerably over the past 24 months which has made me lean much harder toward a new GR86/BRZ purchase decision. I’ve been afraid that I would regret that at some point but your reviews have really helped me feel confident that I will be thrilled with this vehicle for a long time to come. I also really want a naturally aspirated power plant and a GTS Cayman is way out of my price range. Thanks for the great reviews!

      I sold my Porsche 2009 Boxster S which is a 987.2 it had a PDK transmission and I had all season continentals on it. I bought a 2022 Gr86 manual transmission. One of my main reason for this was having the ability to recline the seat in the GR 86 and having easy access to the rear seat area for luggage food etc. The GRE 86 kicks into a slide much easier than the boxer ever did and the Porsche being an S model with 310 horse was definitely quicker and faster ,but the GR 86 has plenty of power so I’m fine there.

      Todd Smith While my Cayman (110k miles) may be my favorite car I’ve ever owned there are things I miss about about my old FRS. Besides how much fun it was to have the tail step out in a a controlled manner and the obvious practicality of having a foldable back seat, I miss track days.The 987.1 is known for oil starvation issues and is a real gamble on the track. There are fixes but taking the cost and risk into consideration along with the lack of a LSD, the risk out ways the reward. The improved performance of the already track ready GR86 along with a warranty makes for a compelling consideration for the GR86 at its price point.

    Question for a future video, after the weather gets warmer and the shocks get more compliant: Because Paul and Todd have praised the Fiesta ST repeatedly and have driven it quite a bit, I'd be interested to hear how they compare its ride to the GR86's. I've had a FiST as a daily driver for five years and still love it, except for its ride, which can be punishing on bad urban roadways especially. The one current car I'd considering dumping the ST for is the GR86, but only if it rides better. Also, please keep us posted on your real-world MPG.

    Just bought a GR86 Premium. Wasn't completely aware of the break in period procedure but I knew it takes time for the engine to break in... YE$, I $HOULD have read the manual (I am now)...
    My point is, I've gone on some speed sprees on back roads but nothing over 6KRPM and never for sustained periods, just 5-1O seconds here and there... roadster driving...
    I'm mostly driving her like a lil 'ole 7Oy/o school teacher until I hit 1,5OOK-2K miles (currently at around 5OO miles right now)... but I still throttle over 4K for a second here and there and vary my change up and down-shift during my daily drives.
    Seems I'm driving it like you described. I get a little burning smell now and then when briefly going over 4K for a few seconds but nothing alarming.

    I can't believe that Toyota - of all manufacturers - now offers (or soon will) not one, but TWO cars I genuinely want to own!!! This GR86 (which I realize is more Subaru than Toyota, but still) - and the upcoming GR Corolla (pure 100% Toyota)! Two very different cars (turbo AWD 4-door hot hatch vs n/a RWD 2-door coupe), but two (presumably) very FUN cars. I currently drive a C6 Corvette Grand Sport - which is without a doubt faster than both of these cars in every way, but I doubt that it's as much FUN. My previous car was an NB Miata... and I miss it. The 'Vette is a BLAST for sure - and it looks and sounds better, but it's just SO capable, that you can't really push its limits on your daily drive on public roads without reaching go-directly-to-jail (or kill yourself) speeds. It's very comfortable, but, dare I say - boring - at normal speeds... whereas you can have a ball wringing out cars like this GR86 in normal driving without worrying about losing your license. I've come to realize that, unless you're competing on a track, cars like this are the way to go for pure fun/ driving pleasure. I can't decide which one I want more.

    If you guys are bringing up the Supra 2.0 and a used Cayman, why not the 230i M-Sport.
    That's what I'm trading my Veloster N for. The N is fun in the right circumstances but it's a plastic box that's a horrible daily/commuter. I traded my FR-S for the N for the same reasons. Live and learn.
    I wish we all had the time/money/space for a weekend car. If I did I would pick the GR86 over the N, GTI, CTR, and Supra 2.0 for sure. Looking forward to more vids with this car. Keep it up!

    I love the BRX/GR86. However, I drove pocket rockets the bulk of my life and NOTHING puts a smile on my face like my 500 horsepower beast of a Mustang that goes very fast in a straight line, which is a joy I could never know in a GR86. My ride is also manual and sounds great.

    Meh...All I see are annoying kids with huge, wheels , even more annoying fart cans driving this car, but to be expected at this price point which is obviously a budget price sport coupe NOT a sports car per say. Compare it with a Cayman? Seriously that's like what 3 times the price haha umm ok.. Even a VW R, q60, RC, Z or Supra would be twice to 3 times the price. My 991 base Carrera would buy me how much of these Toyota's I wonder? JK JK just a bit of sarcasm. But seriously how many people get revved by some kid with a BRZ or 86 at least once? ; )

    6:20 what are you saying Paul? I do not follow. Why does the car being held in an area with a fire suppression system mean that the manufacturer already redlined the engine? I'm not debating either of those points I'm just confused how they relate to each other. (Maybe it's not you, maybe it's the editor *cough* Todd).

    I owned a first gen BRZ and, sadly, I had to return it because of check engine / stalling over and over. I LOVED that car so much I went through a full tank of gas on the first day. It broke my heart.. ended up with an older WRX 2008 till that started some crazy CEL issues too and well.. Lived in Mass at the time and you can't pass inspection with a busted CEL and nothing would fix it. So.. long story short, I thought I'd be a forever Subaru gal, but I cannot wait to test drive this car. Been driving a 2016 Camry XSE and just found out I can get for trade exactly what I paid for it 3 years ago. WOO!!

    Hello, I had the chance the put my hand on brz here in Belgium.. only 10 have been available in the country!
    I like the rims you put on your 86 and if I made no mistake they are OZ leggera 18x8?? My question is do you know the offset for this one because 45 and 35 are available. I would like to go to 35 but the dealer says it won’t fit..
    Thx in advance
    Sylvain

    Dont forget, You'll need to review and compare the GR86 to the soon announced GR Corolla! I think i have my mind set on this with the same color! It stands out, performs at its best, and is very customizable. Would be my first.
    Great reviews as always. Very informative and fun.

    Blah blah blah all this and not one one word of CAN TC AND VSC BE FULLY !!! TURNED OFF not 80% not 90% but 100% all the dam way off and no pedal dance did not fully remove them in the previous car. I'm sick and tired of new cars full of electronic nannys that can never be turned all the way off.

    I just want to enhance your comment on the Nokia Hakkapalittas. I have a set on my present vehicle, and love them, but years ago with my 1987 CRXsi, a less then 2000 pound vehicle, with a set of original Hakkas, I had zero worries in the snow, I felt in total control. Also I live in Ontario, Canada and in a snow belt. Lots of snow, slush etc. My first three cars were RWD, and I can't wait to get into another one soon, with a BRZ/GR86.

    This summer can y'all please get your hands on a stock(ish) 370 (non NISMO) and do a comparison to the GR86 on street and track. Because with the new Z coming out, I assume prices for 370s will drop and people looking for a naturally aspirated RWD, manual Japanese sports coupe will be able to get a well maintained 370Z for the same or maybe less than a new GR86. Thats a great comparison.

    Just did an Autotempest search Nationwide for the GR86 manual. THREE RESULTS. 😒
    If you guys DO decide to run an aftermarket exhaust, go with the UEL headers to get the Subi rumble, and use a stealth or street version of a muffler so the noise is mild, not loud. Tone instead of loudness.

    Couldn't agree more about power... power is killing the sport cars. I had a 2007 base Boxster and traded in for a TT RS... barely 2 weeks in, I regretted it deeply. 2 months later I dumped the TT and got a 2010 base Boxster which I will be buried in when I die... I will never make THAT mistake again!

    Are the Subaru boxer engines reliable for long term ownership? I have been told to expect problems at 60-80k miles by my mechanic son-n-law. I personally don't know anything about them. Any other manual shift new vehicles recommended? Can't do a Miata, too small for my needs!
