As a GT86 owner myself, I think the problem with Ben's launches is that TC was not fully off, so the computer kept cutting power in the wet. When you press the TC off button once, it only turns off part of the TC (which is what Ben did). To further disable control, you will need to hold the button for 3 sec. And for older model such as the one in this video, you will need to do the pedal dance to fully turn off all electronic control (except for ABS).
i leased one for three years and put an hks air filter in it and some stickier tires, it was the most reliable and fun car i have owned, but the interior was kinda dull, i preferred when i upgraded to a gti, but i couldn't drift the gti like i could my scion fr-s(gt86)
The GT deserves respect in terms of reviving the original 86 but the GR gets the most respect as the performance is what the 86 should be in terms of today’s standards.
@@dennyklein1965 the entire point of the GT was to offer a car with a back to the 90s basic package, including its power output and the fact that some models have knob ac controls, the car was supposed to be a revival of the 90s sports coupe which I think it captures very well. Matt's gotten so skilled at launching a car for quarter mile racing, that I feel the rolling runs give a better measure of a car's performance against its competitors. That 2.4ltr is a nice improvement over the previous gen
That GR 86 is just so amazing! I know without the GT 86 there would be no GR 86, but the GR 86 seems like the TRUE modern AE86 but really I love them all, Toyota's 86 is my favorite line of cars ever. 🥰❤️
Just an Idea for future races. Maybe try changing the lanes where each car is between launches in the initial drag race. It will help us see if maybe the tarmac has anything to do with the times.
Track mode on the GR86 does not disable traction control, it allows for more wheel spin before cutting in. The stability program light comes on to indicate it’s not at its full potential and will allow the slide more before acting. Press and hold the t/c button with the sport mode button and it turns off everything and you can let the lsd diff do it’s job fully.

From a fellow GT86 owner, you need 6000rpm to properly launch the car from that 2L because of the peak torque from the curve. Below that is the famous torque dip which you get nothing if you start off from there.
The reason the GT86 sounded better to Ben is that there is a resonator in the car from the engine to make it sound better for the passengers in the cabin. A bit of a cheat, but still real engine noise, manually tuned and piped into the cabin.
That AE86 is an excellent car even if it’s not fast and it’s overpriced due to being featured in Initial D.
