In today's video we're taking a look at the VENERABLE LC76, or the Wagon variant of the 2024 Land Cruiser 70 series, which has JUST been updated with a MAJOR facelift! We've previously reviewed the ALL-NEW 4-cylinder variant, but today we're focusing on the V8 in top GXL trim to see whether the $10,000 dollar increase is worth your money. Sad to see the v8 go but I'm happy and surprised that the 70 series will live on. A lot of people hated the V8 when it arrived so i think the Hilux motor will grow on people in time.
lets not forget the 3.3l v6 turbo diesel might come in soon as replacement.
Let’s hope the V6 arrives soon! The Hilux engine has had time to win people over and it has done the opposite in the hilux.
I'm definitely a fan of the wagon body style! It may just be my favourite too.
Hope you will get the 4cyl auto wagon to test. Personally I never cared for the V8. I was sad when they dumped the legendary straight 6 hdfte for the v8s. That said the 4 cyl looks great. Just wished they fixed the rear track. If they can do a complete redesign of the Hilux and every other model they have, every 10 years...they can update the cruiser once in 20 years at least to fix the track
I would like to see both of you and Jacob in this Toyota during the test. You are a genius duo, I suspect there is some stream that was related to Jacob's stay, but unfortunately I am not the sharpest pencil in the pencil case when it comes to English, so could some kind soul write what is the Jacob situation about? I follow you from Europe, from the Czech Republic and I love your style, your editing, your humor.
Definitely had reach control/adjustment in the older landcruisers. My old '09 v8 has it
I am so pleased you pointed out why these vehicles are basic and don’t use a lot of modern tech. To be honest I think most 70 series reviewers have forgotten what these vehicles were designed for. In the days before social media influence the LC military was one of the few go to vehicles for remote outback travel. Minimal need for special tools, computers or dealer workshops and as reliable as any vehicle could be in harsh environments. I only hope that Toyota has been sensible enough to ensure that when the cameras, sensors and CAN bus switch gear, etc fills with bull dust and fails that the engine, driveline and diff locks still work!
They're all cool, but I love the 78 most!!! Just picked our Troopy up a few days ago now so biased.

I lived in DXB for 24 years and had a 2019 SWB version with the 4.5LT in-line six with a 5-speed manual..loved that car.

Something I saw about a week ago, was that the order books for the V8 are definitely NOT going to be opened again and if you wanted a V8, it is now too late.

I get it. It’s an icon with bulletproof parts you change out by yourself in the outback. But I’m watching this from the states, mentally comparing it to my Ford Bronco Wildtrak. Wow I haven’t seen a Toyota interior like that since my 1995 Toyota pickup, right before the Tacoma was introduced.

The big issue is how will towing be affected 2.8 4 cylinder with a heavier load compared to the V8 over long haul.
How long is the back cargo length after the back seats have been folded forward
You would expect any decent review to measure cargo length with back seats up and folded forward. But no. You can scour the internet, and you will not find cargo length for the 70 series wagon. This reviewer climbs in the cargo area and tells us that it is "a lot of space", whatever that means. The truth is that the cargo length is smaller than average for a car of this type, and is actually terrible. It sort-of makes up for it by being very "boxy" with good load height, but there is no avoiding the fact that the load length is terrible. To be precise, 1060 mm with rear seats in normal position, and 1400 mm with rear seats folded. To show just how bad that is, my Mitsubishi Challenger wagon gives 1180 cargo length with rear seats in normal position, and up to 1290 mm by sliding the rear seat forward. With rear seats folded, I have 1690 mm of cargo length, versus the pathetic 1400 mm for the LC76 wagon. The Toyota Prado has less load length than my Challenger, but still significantly more that the LC76. Put simply, the LC76 wagon is worst-in-class regarding cargo load length.
The 2.8 flogs the standard V8. They should fit the 200 series 200kw V8 with the auto or 6 speed manual, that would be a fitting way to end the V8.
Image what Toyota would charge you for that, crazy money.

1:26 I’m glad you brought up amortization because it’s insane how expensive these trucks are considering they’ve been being produced for the last 40 years. In America, the most expensive Toyotas are also the oldest and most outdated ones. And it’s not that they’re just a “little” expensive, they are more expensive than a BMW x3 M40i, or even an X3M in some cases. If only they were priced accordingly, I would love to have one of these as a 2nd+ car
These Toyota's will outlive a X3 so you are getting value if you intend on keeping it for a long time. Also the resale value is the best you can achieve from a car
It’s because they have the whole market if Nissan still made diesel patrols or if land rover still made decent defenders it would keep Toyota honest

They should make the new 70's (exactly this one) with TNGA-F platform. Along with their newest diesel 3.3l V6 engine
So looks the same, even better. Much more powerful with greater gas mileage, drives like a dream, and still monster off-roadie

A comprehensive review, but wrong re the rear suspension. Yes, on paper Toyota have increased the wagon payload by about 500 kg so as to get GVM up to 3510 kg, so as to avoid side impact safety requirements. The reviewer thus assumes that the rear leaf suspension is stiffer to account for this, and even mentions how the ride is a bit harsher as a result. Not true. Toyota have not made a single physical change to the chassis or rear suspension - the GVM upgrade is only on paper. The video clearly shows the 5-leaf rear spring, which is just the same as it always was. Now that's actually good news for people like me who will not be loading the wagon heavily, but a bit of a rip-off for people who want to carry a lot of gear, and who would reasonably believe that this new model with 3510 GVM has been re-engineered to carry an extra 500 kg of payload.

Was prepared to drop $10K+ on pipe, tune etc. on a new 76, and was made to feel like I was beneath their consideration!
In 2020 I bought a new 76 GXL. I found it to be slow, cumbersome and just too small. I liked the engine, but not the fact I’d have to spend $1,000s to have it tuned and clutch updated. It’s not exactly a fun car to drive so after 3 years sold it for a 200 series, which I much prefer.
Funny thing, I don’t miss it all.
For me the 70 series hype just doesn’t live up to its reputation.

I've always said they handled terribly and once towing anything, it's just lethal.
We sold ours off & eventually upgraded to a Y61 3 litre Patrol.
All I ever missed was the motor, not because of its power, Christ it didn't have any, just the rumble of the diesel V8. Ours was chipped, made a big difference but still gutless.
It's interesting, because people pay hideous money for them they feel obliged to cover up their stupidity by saying it's good. Once they opt out as we did, they'll then speak truthfully nothing good about them.
I realised from the outset I'd made a huge mistake, eventually learned to despise the bloody thing, heading out, oh shit I've gotta take that shitbox, truly.

As a 4x4 they are pathetic, must utilise diff locks to achieve basic stuff.
So why do owners rave about them.
It's just they are so dismal that everything becomes a bigger challenge than it actually is, so you feel you've really achieved something, mainly due to the inherent instability, thrashing around, must be a challenge!!!
But then you get into another vehicle, take exactly the same route and find out there was nothing challenging about it, it just occurs in complete control & comfort, all the excitement gone out of 4x4.
Moving on, our Patrol diff lock just isn't required, mainly due to axle flex offered by coil springs all round, but is engaged as a reassurance occasionally and lubricate the components.
Purchased an aftermarket front diff lock when vehicle was new, based of experience of 76 relying on them BUT its never been installed as it's just not required.
Don't comprehend the hype around them, as a previous owner, avoid purchasing, not good at anything other than that rumble.

@@ianweal3081 spot on. I too have owned three Y61s, 3.0 TD, 4.5 & 4.8 petrol, the latter my favourite except its thirst. I now drive a petrol 200 series and love it. Interestingly, if diesel costs 30 c/litre more than petrol, the cost to run is identical.
I may wait for the new Prado as my retirement car. My boat weighs 3.2t empty and I need the tow capacity and power to pull. The 76 series is no good for towing, too short in the wheelbase and narrow.

Ahhh hang on the LC70 series is now a commercial classification vehicle. It is not regulated by the same regulations as passenger class vehicles anymore. However maybe the Wagon may still be classified as a passenger vehicle. Unsure.
Euro6 becomes mandatory on 1 November 2025 for existing heavy vehicle models. So, Toyota kind of shot themselves in the foot there by reclassifying the LC70 as a medium goods vehicle. It let them sidestep the pole crash test, but means they have to meet Euro6 earlier than if they left it as a passenger car.
The 76 has always been classified as a commercial vehicle, not a passenger vehicle, ludicrous isn't it.
It's main appearance is as a passenger vehicle, right, all that seating and seat belts alludes to that interpretation correct.

There is a "V" in the ID number.
That "V" is categorised as a Van, yes it classified as a van by Toyota, not a passenger vehicle, hmmmm.
As a commercial vehicle it was not required to meet expensive passenger vehicle development, yet they charge shit loads for the lack of it.

1st gear like in a lot of manual commercial vehicles and trucks are very lowmfor everday driving taking off in 2nd is sufficient.had a few hilux manuals ober the years always take off in 2nd unless pulling a tree stump
Can anyone tell me how much length in the back of you removed the back seats. For example can say a 6 foot person lay in the back?
I have owned a 62 series Sahara(high roof) for 25 years and have slept in the thing many months on end, if you look at the dimensions of a 76 you'll find they are nearly identical to a 62 a bit more "boxy" for the 76, I am 5'10 and have no trouble laying in it stretched out, 6' would be around the maximum length though, unless you move the front seats forward while sleeping. Hope this helps?

BTW. I also own a LX470 (100 series basically) and have made a bed in the back of that one too, it's actually a little longer and wider than the 60(although a 60 seems made for a double bed mattress!) but the roof is lower, it works though, (both cars are setup for long stays out bush, we just spent 6 weeks in far north Queensland(Wet very wet!! Sweaty, raining and very muddy!! Lol) with the missus. We Live in SA.

It's going to be a collectable truck. The only new style 70 with the old V8? There aren't going to many of them made. If I was on the waiting list and was offered the V8 or the 2.8, I'd take the V8, sell it, re-order a 2.8 and make bank. They'll be 150k in no time, if they aren't already.
The face lifted V8s are available for $105-110K on the “second hand” market at the moment. So certainly a markup from the $89K drive away price brand new. Will be interesting to see how that figure changes when the official statement that the V8 is no more comes from Toyota.

One of the mostly reliable cars ever. The previous v6 was more loved by the farmers than the V8 though
Not a V6 ? It was a straight 6 the best 👌 very toughty and tuff very reliable that diesel motor , it still is today for the fortunate people that still have one and I believe you can still buy that motor from Japan brand new 👍

Not surprised Toyota will discontinue the V8 if going by the overwhelming positive reviews of the 2.8L TD 4-Cyl. Where it seems, other than the exhaust note, the 2.8L TD trumps the 4.5L TD every time. Plus, with stricter emissions standards coming, that just added another nail in the V8 TD coffin.
The 2.8 downhill decent is too fast compared to the v8. Will be missed by serious off-roaders.

Just buy a 0 km lc200 diesel. In australia itself there are atleast 50 in australia itself. If not you can custom request toyota to order a lc70 top spec straight from the factory .

Oh, how times have changed! To think, this legendary car doesn't quite cut it for our tech-savvy modern society. Why rely on your own skills when your car's computer can do almost everything for you? And heaven forbid having to sit in a chair that's only relatively comfortable for a few hours! Clearly, it's a case of human skills taking a backseat, not a flaw of the 70 series. And let's just gloss over the fact that you could drive this classic for 20-30 years without a hiccup, while those 'modern' cars become paperweights the minute their warranty breathes its last. Progress, right?

Can’t see the $10,000 price increase, proceeds to explain it now has central locking, upgraded gvm, radar systems, DRLs and projectors. All of which would considerable add cost including labour not to mention so much more as you continue on in your video. Hell, a diff locker alone is around $2,000

You've got hold of it mate,gutless, thirsty,uncomfortable, no room,different track front to back,needs clutch upgrade and suspension upgrade before you do anything with it plus motor needs exhaust upgrade and remap to get any sort of power. Typical Toyota overpriced and overrated

There are Toyota landcruisers from the 1960s and 1970s that are still going strong on 100% original engine/transmission. Toyota landcruiser 70 and 80 series are made for the harshest climate, most demandong tasks, and that at the hand of most unskilled drivers. You could not destroy a landcruiser even if you tried to. There is a good reason why all over the world from Australia to the remotest parts of Africa only and only Toyota lancruiset is chosen. Why do you think UN and many other organisations only choose Lancruiser for war zones?
My friend, when it comes to offroad, reliability, quality, safety, and dependability, other brands sound like a joke in front of the Landcruiser. I've heard stories about how landcruisers went through 8 year wars like a champ.

Aside from all the issues listed above, the two competitors I've added would have similar issues, well maybe Mercedes would have some real power behind it.
Comfort and true ability ditched for reliability, and both Mercedes & Mahindra offer the same reliability.

I am a hydraulic guy. The digger I worked on today has much better interior than this 2024 brand new vehicle. eg better tech overall, bigger multi touch screen, air vented seat etc.........

I dont know about engine, V8,6 whatever, in this crazy times, just having internal combustion engine itself is blessing.

Underpowered V8, that is. If Mercedes-Benz built it to Geländewagen standard, it would have made 377kW out of a 4.5. Toyota lags behind. I don't get the laments. After all, even Toyota's own 2.8 4cylinder makes more power, uses less fossil juice than the V8. Get a kidney belt, and wet wipes for all the fanboy whining. 😂🎉😊

Absolutely can't believe people would pay this sort of money for this junk. If you don't think it's junk, why do you need to throw out the seats, throw out the rear axle assembly, throw out the entertainment system, throw out most of the suspension. Also, most people would love to throw out that terrible old 5 speed manual box for an auto, but who would want to pay $30k for that, but some do, some want to throw out the engine, well no, not that far, but in this state of tune, it's terrible, lets spent another 5 or 10k on getting more power.
I know people also throw out the alternator for a water proof unit. I know I will cop a lot of flak, and that doesn't matter and it really doesn't matter what I think any how, if you have the money and you love these cars, go for it, but I still don't get them.
It seems you are out of context. Read carefully and understand: this car is built for people who know what they are buying and what they are paying for. If you think that 'stupid' people can earn $100k and just throw it away, then are you sure you can call yourself smarter than them? I have owned an LC VDJ76 for 7 years and replaced the suspension only for a 2" lift upgrade. I do a lot of traveling, camping, expedition, and off-road stuff, and I would never ever switch from a mechanical gearbox to an automatic one. I have never experienced any problems with the chairs; the alternator has been underwater 100+ times with zero problems, as with the rest parts of the car. If you put an average car in the same conditions, it would die just around the corner. Moreover, after 7 years of heavy usage, you can chuck out 99% of modern cars, but not this beast. You can easily reach 1,000,000 km on your speedometer in this car, whereas after 200,000 km, you can drive your average car straight to the rubbish bin. Once again, and more clearly: this car is not for city dwellers who prefer to have algorithms or other 'smart' systems making decisions for them. It's not for those who anxiously queue up for the 4th booster shot, trembling at every sneeze. This car is designed for those who love a real drive and want full control over their vehicle. It's for individuals who aren't concerned about luxurious comforts or the quality of loudspeakers. And it's certainly not for those whose mother washed their ass until the end of school and now such a well-groomed ass needs a seat with massagers and ventilation for their well-pampered selves.
@@australia-ukraine Hahaha, I do agree with most of what you are saying. I know these cars are designed so people can build them up to a stage that suits them. What you are using it for is perfect, but most of my friends,(I do have them) hardly even use them for what they are designed for.
I didn't say they were unreliable, they certainly are. My main gripe is what Toyota is charging for these cars, and I bet you would'nt get one for the list price, which is crazy. I do know owners who wished an auto was at least an option.
For this money a 200 or 300 landcruiser is far better value and really don't have change out much at all.
For a touring car towing a medium to large van a 70 series is not a good option, I don't care what anyone says. A new 300 is far better, but I did say, it doesn't matter what I think, if you are happy, that's all that matters.
Fuck the V8 off, shorten the front axle or match the rear, have the 300 series V6 as an option and it will be mint. The V8 is a clunker and a PoS
Why would the V6 fit in the narrower chassis? It’s a 90 degree V6, approximately the same width as the V8. Ain’t going to happen.
