Dear Toyota, we love ❤️ you... However, I can't help but notice that you've purposely not given the option of having a 6 cylinder turbo diesel in this new 70 Series... Even if it were a single turbo it would have been nice. I do plan on purchasing a 70 Series very soon, but I'll be going for the oldie, but goody normally aspirated in-line 6, 5 door 7 seater (I have a beautiful wife and 6 babies) or if I can fit some extra seats on a V8 70 series, I'll go with that one instead. As usual exceptional video from Mr. Andrew! Much respect 🫡 from Angola 🇦🇴
Congrats Andrew, I 100% understand what you mean by the satisfactary feel of starting the V8 and 1HZ 'knowing that it will get you there and out of there'. Looking forward to build from Gantsi, Botswana.
Good luck upgrading. I am curious if you will like it off road. I guess you should be able to get better mileage in this. (about the vibrations -- check the bonnet -- i've seen in other videos that the metal it is not correctly glued) AAAND you can use direct connection to the battery for light-bar with separate switch..and no canbus.
Hi andrew yes you should use your dash cover, cut a relief in the section that covers the light sensor, re- sew the 2 layers in the section cut back together, and voila😊.
The New 70 series improvements look and are much better in my opinion. That front is beautifully designed. I love it and will order myself a the 2.8 Auto in Grey.
Hi Andrew, this is why after 37 years of landcruiser (and a couple of patrols), i bought a hilux. To see if I like the 2.8 and auto. Like your troopie the hilux gets a vibration and wants to down change. In power mode that doesnt happen. I priced a troopie and it $30,000 more than the hilux. Im frankly struggling to justify moving back to the 70 after all these years. Independent front suspension? Yes weak. Body not as strong eg roof racks? Yes true. But i may adjust the way i camp. Im loving 9.2 litres per hundred. Anyway. Your build will determine what I do. In the meantime. Inwill drive my 1979 fj45 tonremind me what a landcruiser once was (had a 300 and hated it. Bring back the 80!)
Ps- lane asist in my sr hilux is off from the start. If you want it you have to turn it one plus my track is the same and incan see the p/side edge of he bull bar. Perhaps toyota should build a live axle hilux 🤔
I have an exterior sunvisor on my 2019 Holden Colorado LTZ and it does not interfere with the auto wiper gizmo in the top of the windscreen. But the windscreen has a much bigger slope than the Toyota. Sad if you can't get one - I reckon they enhance the "look" of the vehicle. But I am from the Chrome era.. 🙂
Ciao from the Veneto! Hope you have a good build. I am happy you can explore the limits of your craft and with any luck you can wrap it in a new color.
Congrats Andrew, just make sure you tick the windscreen replacement box in your car insurance. Those windscreens are substantially more expensive to replace than the old LCs with no camera.
omg - i just remembered you have some cinematography courses online - i need to remember to sign up - your a very good story teller 🤓 im a software engineer from 9 to 5 - and have just started a media business on the side - just putting together my portfolio over the next few months 😎
I had a 2018 2.8 Hilus auto (130kw engine) and there was no turbo lag. It just pulled away without hesitation but ran out of huff at higher rpm. I test drove a 2021 Fortuner with the current 150kw engine and noticed the same turbo lag on takeoff. The engine however pulled very strongly at higher rpm and didn't run out of power. Toyota have not just retuned the engine but also upgraded hardware (bigger turbo which takes longer to spool).
We have just taken delivery of a new model new shape 70 series single cab in the DRC with the 1HZ motor at our company. I was under the impression that the 1HZ has been discontinued. Can you shed some light on this. Thanks for the great content, cheers Mike
I'm following with interest. Weighing up whether to go for the 2.8 or one of the last V8s. I hope you take a look at the HEADSPACE CAMPERS pop up roof. They look like they've moved the concept a long way forward. Much steeper angle giving different sleeping options and masses of headroom. Plus a much better (factory) look.
I also have a vibration at a certain RPM on very hot days and it actually comes from the snorkel. May not be the same vibration as you have but something to check. Test is to stick your hand out the window and press the snorkel against the body and it should go away.
Seen similar on teambullet offroads new cruiser, where the bottom section connects to the upper on the snorkel. I had a vibration from the window wiper motor or whatever it is. wasn’t properly in. Made the whole cab LOUD.
How did you get your hands on it so quick? I also ordered a Troopy 2.8L in auto in August last year and the latest email I got from Toyota says it's still not yet in line for production. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
This is the most interesting question for all guys with 100k+ subscribers. I've been waiting in line for over two years to get this car delivered next Saturday. Yet, he spoke about it as casually as if he were going to buy a loaf of bread at Night Owl. That's why I never believe them; something about it feels suspicious to me.

The classic muscle car scene has known for decades that no amount of technology and improvements will ever replace the smile you get from a V8. The 4x4 community is now starting to realise the same. As the saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement.
@@4xoverlandI absolutely agree the auto, lighter weight and economy will result in a better performing vehicle than the V8 (in most situations) but you’ll never turn the key and grin at it idling, ever. Yourself nor Ronny will disagree with that.
My friend Kylon made few conversion of older 70 series models in to automatic trans in Poland in his amazing workshop aka rebuild center Wyprawa4x4. Its super nice that Toyota finnaly provide 70 series with that "modern" touch. It will help a lot of begginers dive in to 4 wheeling with safety and style.
Great overview given your years of experience with these types of vehicles. Nothing you mentioned about Toyota Australia surprises me one bit. Most modern car companies dont have passion for what they build or sell. There are exceptions but not in the mass market area. Looking forward to your fit out & to see how you include all the bits & pieces.
Just a thought on Automatics. They’re self learning and get better with driving and it’s better to DRIVE them. Don’t be too gentle, don’t be too hard on it’s they’ll generate a good tune.
The CAT 6 indicators have clearance light functionality, required by law for a GVM upgrade. So, if one was to increase the GVM on the new 70, they save themselves a few hundred bucks because the new 70 already has them. You probably won't be able to change them ASPW because of the new 70 GVM increase. I have the Dobinsons 3900kg GVM upgrade, their cat 6 indicator lights look classy
CAT 6 indicators ready for most pre approved GVM upgrades and the mines , they are ugly as hell but compliant and don't require and cutting of the factory guard to fit them , less chance of panels corroding in the long run I reckon its a decent compromise.
Unplug the sunlight sensor and then the headlight switch will function like a standard one, no more auto function so you can use your dash mat. You can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor in the settings but it still annoyed me with the lights going on and off, it’s much better now that I can have the headlights off when I want them off.
9:20 My 150 Prado does this when the torque converter locks up in cruise mode. Very good for fuel economy but the vibration can annoy some people, I personally like it as I hate slipping automatics, it feels like they are filled with custard as opposed to gears.
I get the overall impression that Andrew felt more excited by the Grenadier which is a more interesting vehicle. My suspicion is that this was just bought because it's falling back to old faithful not really something really wanted. And he's talking bullshit about engineers. It was engineers who designed the Spitfire not artists for example.
Hi Andrew good knowledge comes with age everything you say I like ,the guard brackets are for pedestrian safety which will be useless when a roo bar is fitted
Which 4x4 vehicles do you prefer Andrew; Old school stuff from 70s, 80s, and 90s, with 100% mechanical everything, and nothing electronic other than lights & wipers etc. Or this new stuff with electronic systems, touchscreens, internet connection, and clever stability programs? Which is better for someone new to over landing, and which do you prefer as an experienced hand?
Incredible Review. Thanks you for going into the pros and cons of automatic vs manual on different terrain. Learned a ton. It breaks my heart that we cannot get those in North America. Spot On about the engineers, by the way. THANK YOU, also for mentioning the blind spot and quality. I am so frustrated with Toyota's insistence on staying with the unnecessarily large front 'nose' on their Pickup trucks and suv's here in N America. It's to the point of absurd, and don't understand why reviewers are not talking about it more. My hopes have been raised however with the new landrover, and I look forward to a test drive.
My primary concern, which applies to nearly all new trucks, SUV’s is the reliance on high output 4cyl turbo engines and their long term reliability. To the average suburbanite who leases and never drives off road thinks not an issue. Buy to those of us who customize and drive their vehicles hard, I am dubious. As an example, what happens long term when the intercooler radiator is clogged with mud repeatedly?
Congratulations for your new Rig, thanks for your first impresisions nice the automatic gearbox and their electronic assitances, and off course the better fuel efficiency vs 1HZ, 1HD-T and GD. regards.
I think you read the scales wrong at toms ... the left readout is the rear and the right readout is the front .. btw that's how it was when I worked there.. that's why the R and F on the back wall .. fyi... daz at OL ..
I assume the engine bay might have an ample space to be used for accessories, just take advantage of the rise in the bonnet and install a bridge-like bracket for accessories.
That low speed vibration may be engine power pulses due to converter lock up to save fuel. Biscuit tin built front fender wise. An oversize transmission cooler would be first on my list seeing that you will be doing a lot of 4lo low speed driving.
The blinkers are that larger size due to an ADR requirement. Because Toyota increased the GVM of the 70 Series to 3510kg, this moved the new 70 Series into the "Medium Goods Vehicle" category. And the ADR specifies vehicles in this category to have larger side blinkers. And we all know why Toyota moved the 70 Series into that category, right? It is to circumvent the new ADR 85. The ADR 85 requires new vehicles sold with a GVM below 3.5 tonnes to meet a stricter side impact safetry regulations that came into effect. The 70 Series does not meet these new requirements, thus the increase in GVM over the 3.5 tonne threshold - w/c doesn't need to comply.
@@4xoverland Quick question Andrew. Now that the 70 Series is classed as a medium goods vehicle, is there a large increase in yearly registration & insurance?
Hi Andrew, are you sure that you cannot put the car sun visor on the new build. I am thinking of doing the same with my 76 new model. I thought the tech in the rooftop box was all facing down from sun visor height.
Hi Andrew, very sad indeed about the external sun visor mate, pity it wasn't possible to just fit one temperately to see if it interferes with that radar thingy. With rear wheel track, are you going try using different off set wheels to fix the wheel track issue or another diff upgrade. Great build coming up mate thanks. Seeya Rob
The radar “thingy” may or may not become important as you would be using it off-road and the frontal branches and bushes could possibly upset your driving experience with unnecessary alarms.
Another brilliant video Andrew I really like your new trophy. I would buy one tomorrow in England if the money was there. look forward to your new build. Much appreciated andrew thank you
How about make a hole on dash cover to goes around the dash light sensor, to hold the cover on its position, also to avoid the cluster light turns off…
Is there a reason why the Japanese Engineers have made a more modern Dashboard available for their Left Hand Drive models but not for their Right Hand Drive models and also why have they left out the new cool fridge between the front seats which are available in all models in the Middle East Countries
All countries specify different specs for their own markets, discuss it with Toyota and then Toyota then builds the cars for them. Its the same with almost all their models. No two countries ever (or rarely) get exactly the same car.
T is definitely a specific organisation. The trucks still have different width - 😂 Allergy to different engines - like it is so complicated to offer both I4 and V6 in this vehicle.
In Australia, you get these fabulous, no-nonsense Troopys -- genuine DIESELS -- but all we get here in the US is gasoline 4Runners and other milquetoast rubbish. Soon to be boat-anchor EV's! Even the HiAce looks to be much better than any passenger or panel van we get stuck with. Blast!
@@larrymiller4 Having driven both in my case (relatively short distances) I stick to the (imported of course) 3rd gen V6 4runner. With an LPG it's still way cheaper not only to drive it but also to maintain it, as diesels are extremely pricey to repair. Plus, the V6 will always sound and feel better than a 4cyl clacking diesel.
The 1HZ is to me the most amazingly satisfying engine that connects me to the original FJ45 I learnt to drive on and love as a boy in Zululand. Tough as nails, smooth and utterly dependable. It reminds me of the Geländewagen 5 cylinder 300 diesel engine and the Range Rover v8 3.5l engines. Rumbly, strong, dependabe and highy satisfying to drive. My dad aso used a Chevrolet C10 4.1 straight six 2wd pckup which was alo very satisfying to drive because of that sily smoot torquey engine and superb comfort. The 4 cylinder seems rough and weeny in my humbe opinion. Sti a great vehice though, well done.

I'll be passing through Ghanzi in April.
I look forward seeing your vehicle in person@@4xoverland
Good luck upgrading.
I am curious if you will like it off road.
I guess you should be able to get better mileage in this.
(about the vibrations -- check the bonnet -- i've seen in other videos that the metal it is not correctly glued)
AAAND you can use direct connection to the battery for light-bar with separate switch..and no canbus.
Hi andrew yes you should use your dash cover, cut a relief in the section that covers the light sensor, re- sew the 2 layers in the section cut back together, and voila😊.
😮wow, what a compliment from your wife... I appreciate what you have, on top of what you have done. I tip my hat sir. Love from kenya.
I’m as thrilled as you are 😊 let the good times begin 👍
Your Wife is gifted with excellent sensibilities. Calling out the trucks features resembling the cars movie "Mater" was hilarious. 😅😅😅😅😅
Very excited for this build and rooting for your Andrew. One day I'll apply what I learned from your videos to build my own tourer!
I loved the 4.2 in my 100 series but I can see why the 2.8 is the future and commonality with other LCs and HiLuxes is going to be a plus.
omg - i just remembered you have some cinematography courses online - i need to remember to sign up - your a very good story teller 🤓
im a software engineer from 9 to 5 - and have just started a media business on the side - just putting together my portfolio over the next few months 😎
My Fortuner 2015 has the same vibration at 1500-1550 rpm - maybe the Prado engine with the extra balance shaft was to smooth this vibration??
Ring around dealers scotty, some ready for delivery, I just picked one up in Vic, had an order pending with no build date, big upgrade from your Jeep
Grand Toyota ( where Andrew got it) told me they can get 1 per month at the moment, roughly 5 month wait 🤷🏼♂️
@@StinkhoundRosieMy local dealer was getting 14 a month, another dealership I know get about 22 a month. Took me 5montha to get mine back in 2022/2023 whilst others where on a good old 3year wait
Andrew please remember that toyota technical review said the auto will get slightly hotter than manual in extreme of roading . Th big hump is for larger radiator and its vital part
I agree the bullbar on the blue troop looked great ...overall you made that look very tough so looking forward to seeing what you do with this.
On another note you say initially it had turbo lag then later on says it pulls well overtaking....can you confirm?
The classic muscle car scene has known for decades that no amount of technology and improvements will ever replace the smile you get from a V8. The 4x4 community is now starting to realise the same. As the saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement.
Given the several reviews released about this 2,8, that statement is wrong. Almost all positive. Or have I not been watching the same reviews?
@@4xoverlandI absolutely agree the auto, lighter weight and economy will result in a better performing vehicle than the V8 (in most situations) but you’ll never turn the key and grin at it idling, ever. Yourself nor Ronny will disagree with that.
wait until the 4cyl is loaded and has a heavy trailer in tow, winding up a steep curvy track, then you will see and feel the advantage of a V8.
You were much more enthusiastic about the INEOS. Am I sensing buyer's remorse?
Great video 👍
9:20 My 150 Prado does this when the torque converter locks up in cruise mode. Very good for fuel economy but the vibration can annoy some people, I personally like it as I hate slipping automatics, it feels like they are filled with custard as opposed to gears.
I get the overall impression that Andrew felt more excited by the Grenadier which is a more interesting vehicle. My suspicion is that this was just bought because it's falling back to old faithful not really something really wanted. And he's talking bullshit about engineers. It was engineers who designed the Spitfire not artists for example.
You don't need a canbus interface for driving lights. You can take the wire for a relay off the high beam still.
I think my opinion of this is well known. Just watch my videos about that stupid new Defender.
My hopes have been raised however with the new landrover, and I look forward to a test drive.
new Land Rover? None of their cars are suited to real adventure. Only Instagram adventure.
Drill a hole into the dashboard cover for the light sensor and put it back on top. I didn’t get any other serious problems feedback from this video.
Agree 100% He needs to load that pig to gross weight and drive it, The good and bad will then show up. That engine is going to rev high to keep going.
@@gerardmccarthy2432 I am confident that we’ll see an honest review of this here
I think I'm getting some Grenadier cold turkey vibes. Such a shame about the exhaust lump. Enjoy the new build, looking forward to the series.
The Japanese version which ive ordered has a small mirror on front left of bonnet to deal with blind spot.
CanM8 for trigger signals. Hooks into CANbus wire pair and picks up signals for all kinds of things you want to trigger
02:52 Standing ovation!
(rest is for "petrol lovers", here we talk true lovers!)
Andrew and gwin, you guys are the definition of couples goals!!
The 70 Series does not meet these new requirements, thus the increase in GVM over the 3.5 tonne threshold - w/c doesn't need to comply.
thank you. I understand why its there. An engineer designed it, and that is why its so ugly.
Really looking forward to your take on the land cruiser Mini. ( jimney killer) that should be out later this year.
Another brilliant video Andrew
I really like your new trophy. I would buy one tomorrow in England if the money was there. look forward to your new build. Much appreciated andrew thank you
How about make a hole on dash cover to goes around the dash light sensor, to hold the cover on its position, also to avoid the cluster light turns off…
I agree on the indicators. An afterthought. Looks like a wart too.
im more curious to see the hiace tbh - no doubt the troop carrier will turn out great, but the driving position might be heaps better for visibility.
About your dash cover, take it to your local mall tailor and have them snip a little round area free around that sensor. Shouldn't be too hard.
Should take your little dash pocket thing to a trimmer and get them to punch a hole out where the sensor sits
It’s fair to say that the only good looking bullbar going at the moment for the face lift 70’s is the one from ATD customs. Check ‘em out Andrew.
Excellent video bro👌🤣 I’m excited to see the progress!👌
T is definitely a specific organisation.
The trucks still have different width - 😂
Allergy to different engines - like it is so complicated to offer both I4 and V6 in this vehicle.
Great insight. Really enjoy the channel, thanks 👍
Otros buenos motores de Toyota son el 2F 4.2 en el FJ 40 y el 1GR 4.O en la prado 150, FJ CRUISER, y en todos los Land Cruiser de la serie 70, excelentes máquinas en colombia.
I love your vids man . Love from Australia 🍻
Have noticed that Falken introduced the Wildpeaak a/tw4 in a LT255/85r16 load range c tire? They also offer a LT 255/80r17 load range e also.
not in Australia.
The 1HZ is so fun, it's a lump. 1HD-FTE is my favourite of the lot
