  • Join me as I travel back to my second tiny home in North Florida and watch one of my more informative and longer videos about my 8x16 Incred-I-Box made by Incredible Tiny Homes from Newport, TN. At the end of the video, you will be rewarded as I have invited you into my home to see the complete inside. In addition, you will see how I got water hooked up from my water hose and how I removed the grey water out of the tiny home. Also, I will explain the need to caulk the gaps or the seams within the walls and between the window seals. Then, I will tell you how much I have spent on home improvements “above and beyond” the initial cost of the tiny homes that I purchased from Incredible Tiny Homes. It is a longer video than normal. However, it is filled with good information and quite visual.

    Couple of points. Get 2 single inductions cook tops. I made the mistake of getting a 2 burner, and found it really difficult to put 2 pots on at the same time. 2nd, I strongly suggest lifting your microwave up and putting in a shelf for it to sit on as high as you can. The micro wave puts out a lot of heat, and will severely overwork your fridge compressor (or condenser) I put 2 round soffit vents on my cabinet to dispense the heat even more. My fridge ran a lot less after this.

    We purchased one of those roadside barn style sheds for $12,000. Ours is 16x40(biggest we could find). We hired someone to finish it out, since we lived five hours away at that time, including adding windows and an extra door(stuff we now realize we should have asked for to begin with, when we ordered our shed). Cost to finish it out into a one bedroom(with a huge closet), one bath/laundry room, and a kitchen/living room combo was $22,000. ($34,000 total) We intended to live in it for a couple of years, while we built a house. We moved in during the fall of 2019. Then covid hit. The cost of everything skyrocketed, and we are still here! But we're managing ok. We built a huge deck on front, and a decent sized covered porch on the side ourselves. We're still planning to build our house, but the set back hasn't been that rough. We moved from a 2400 sq foot house on a tiny lot, to a tiny house on 23 acres with a huge pond! Life is good. Bonus points: We have made more friends here, in the four years we've been here, than we did when we lived in a neighborhood full of people for fifteen years.

    Amazing. I think you touch on some very key points, which is buying the Incredi-box (2 in your case) is only half the battle..lol. There's no one way to go about it obviously, but between primer/paint, weatherization finishing touches, furnishings, light fixtures, small appliances, washer/dryer, custom steps, patio/deck, outdoor firepits, grills, gardening supplies, new hobby "toys" & so on & it's easily well over $5k-10k. Not all the aforementioned will apply of course to everybody, but maintaining the home up to "spec" just as if you bought a home anywhere else is akin to healthy pride & self-respect. I've seen other vids of ITH buyers & it can take a few years to finally get just about everything they wanted inside & outside accomplished. Congrats on your journey..been rooting for you!

    Thanks so much for sharing your journey! You are absolutely right about how the finishes add up! I think that's something that's easily overlooked when trying to figure out how much house a person can afford.
    You've done so much work and it's easy to see how you're making it a home! One question: do ALL your clothes really fit under your bed?! Coats, rain gear, and all? I can't see that working for me. I've measured it out in my current space and, so far, I'm DOWN to about a 4' closet. I may need to sleep standing up.
    I think one of the things I like the most about your videos is that they show that it's possible to work through or around most of the challenges with help and you never know where it will come from - strangers, acquaintances, neighbors, friends, family. And, of course, you've done the lion's share yourself! You are one of your own best resources!
    THanks, again, for sharing your journey!

    • @VanLifeStorytelling
      @VanLifeStorytelling  Год назад +3

      Good points and I am finding that living in such a tiny home of 8x16 the biggest challenge is finding a good way to house the clothes and NOT living out of a suitcase. Then, sharing the clothes between two tiny homes and having it spread out accordingly is challenge. In this home I did not have space underneath my bed as most clothes will be in plastic containers in the loft over the bathroom area.

    Thank you so much for the reality of investing in a tiny home. There truly is a lot of preparation, including the finance as well, so thank you so much for making it clear as far as face value. Unfortunately, there are also lots of hidden cost that probably the average person doesn’t think of. The caulking is extremely important. The hooking up of utilities and especially taking care of the waste and water supply and electricity and refrigerator and what you need to do or have to cook. Thank you for being so real because it does cost at least just as much as getting the tiny home itself not to mention a place or land to keep your beautiful home.

    With the grey water, what about keeping rats, mice and other vermin from crawling up the grey water hose? We are RV'ers and we keep our tank blades closed and dump at 2/3rds full or more to prevent that. In our home in Las Vegas, even with regular plumbing, a baby rat was able to get into one of our toilets from the sewer, let alone an open hose. A fitting on the end of the hose might clog. We were contemplating the Incred-I-Box, but the inability to add a grey tank made that a no-go.

    I enjoy your videos and appreciate seeing all of the price breakdowns and hearing about the reality of getting a DIY home to finish off. It's awesome that you are handy in the way that you are able to do it yourself and do such a great job. Me, not so much. I'd have to hire someone to do just about everything. I figure I'd have to get ITH's "Mack Daddy" version and additionally pay ITH or someone to hook up everything once it was placed on a lot. That would definitely raise the price of the finished product for me.

    I am curious about how you will hang shelves and the pot holder on your tiny house. Also wondering how you will cool and heat your tinys. Do you need an air ex-changer? Is condensation a problem? The underside of your tiny is plywood? Should it be painted or covered in some way? It looks so vulnerable to rot, bugs and critters. Also, I'm wondering how much it would cost to have steps built for the front door.

    Tip: consider the plastic, cling-on, window film, for your door windows. They sell it at Lowes/Home Depot, and it comes in different styles. It's also really easy to apply. Just wipe the window with Windex & air dry, cut the product to size, apply, and press down. (We use the Frost design for our doors, and one that looks like stained glass for a small window on our stairs) They're inexpensive, still allow a soft light in, and can take the place of expensive blinds or curtains for privacy. Our friends live in a brownstone, and use them for all the bottom windows, facing the street, so they can have the drapes open for light, but still have privacy. 😉👍
