This song has special meaning for me. I saw the Little River Band in 1979, a week or so before I was headed out to San Diego for Navy bootcamp. I was about to become a sailor for the next 6 years and I wasn't even 20 yet. It was the first time I'd left Missouri. I got goosebumps watching them play this then knowing I was about to become a sailor and had a "Cool Change" coming my way...and still get goosebumps when I hear the start of this song. It was indeed a Cool Change.

Glenn Frey and Don Henley from the Eagles heard Little River Band and stated they had the best vocal group harmonies they had ever heard. Try "Lady" next or "Help Is On It's Way". Both great songs

When I get to my childhood home in Rhode Island, the smell of the ocean - even miles inland - makes me happy.
When the singer says "when I'm out on the sea alone" - you ARE alone. Lying back in a drifting boat just staring up at the sky and just feeling connected -- to the sea -- to the sky. The quiet - just water lapping at the boat. BUT you know you can't let yourself get too lost in the feeling; you need to make sure you can get back.
I was always in small craft - row boats, small sail boats - so a couple thousand yards from shore was my limit. I always wished I could afford something sturdier.

This song always brings tears to my eyes. I grew up boating, skiing & swimming on/in the rivers & lakes of Kentucky but it's the ocean that calls to me, always.
Every summer we went to Florida for vacation. In my adult life I go whenever I get the chance but not as often as I used to. I actually get homesick for the beach & the water. I love to swim out past the breakers & just relax, letting the smooth roll of the sea lull me & soothe my spirit.
Some people just enjoy the water as a kind of playground. Others feel a primal pull that's undeniable & spiritual. I've felt it since I was 3 years old & always will. This song expresses it beautifully.
Thanks for reacting to it. And gratitude to The Little River Band for the song itself.

We live on the east coast of Florida and being on the water is the most peaceful, relaxing, getting lost in the wonder of it all is the best feeling. And when the dolphins play in the wake of our boat, man, nothing like it. And the east coast is absolutely beautiful like the panhandle.

I didn’t see the ocean until I was 26. And it’s been 11 years since I’ve seen it. Disabled and physically and financially know I will probably never get back there. When I first saw the ocean, the pelicans, the smell of the air, the sound and feel of the waves… knew I was home. I miss it so much. Think our souls lead us there.

Deborah, I completely understand how you feel. Decades ago, when I was just a punk at 15 years old and turning 16 in late August, I signed up for a SCUB diving class out here in California through my high school, that was an occupational program aimed at making me either a lifeguard or if I took more classes, a commercial diver or underwater welder. I did end up being a lifeguard one summer and hated it, but I loved the sea. When I got to college, I took a marine bio course and an oceanography class just so I would better understand the world I loved to explore. I would spend almost every weekend on scuba at places like Crescent Bay, Seal beach, Laguna beach, Corona Del Mar and many others.
I had many awesome experiences and learned that I was the visitor, and that mankind is just a tourist down there. I've seen many species of whales and sharks; I've played with dolphins and seals. I watched sharks, little and large, swim right by me and I've been bumped by God only knows what while hanging out in the kelp forest along the California coast. I've drifted on the surface at night and watch falling stars burn up and become part of our planet.
I probably have close to two thousand hours on scuba over my lifetime. I used to keep a dive book but lost my gear several decades ago along with my dive card but know people that have their own compressors so I can almost always get my air tanks filled. (That's how dive shops stop the government from taking control of the sport diving industry, by only allowing people that have their certification to get their tanks filled.)
The sea if a beautiful but harsh mistress and when she looks her most beautiful is when she is the most dangerous. A siren song actually.
Go learn how to Scuba dive and open that world even further than what is just on the surface.

One of my all-time favorite songs. For me it’s a reminder to take time out every once in a while and just live my life. With no worry of jobs or responsibilities. Even taking a little bit of time away from family just to be my own person. It is very important in life. Living in Florida, I take one morning every other month and go to the beach by myself. I sit with my chair, some music, and some rum punch, and just exist for a couple hours. Totally reinvigorates the soul!

There were so many good songs in the late 70s that reflected on the ocean. And it seems everyone of them was adopted by my shipmates while we were at sea. Our deployments would last up to nine months. And we would rely on our boom boxes and collection of cassette tapes.

The lead singer is Glenn Shorrock. He is now 78 years old and still touring here in Australia. Unfortunately, he (and the original line-up) lost the legal right to use the name "Little River Band" in 2002. "Cool Change" was once voted as one of the top 30 Australian songs of all time.

One of the great bands of the 70s. They saw a road sign to a location called “Little River” while driving in country Victoria (Australia) and grabbed that as a name. Amusingly some of the band members had been in another Aussie band called Mississippi. 😊

Super talented musicians, songwriters and good folks. Had the pleasure of working with them on a concert back in ’79 when “Lonesome Loser” was rocketing into the Top 10 on the Billboard 100.
Unfortunate and sad that none of the original members are able to perform using the Little River Band or LRB names due to a legal dispute. The current touring lineup does not include anyone from the original/classic lineup and none of the current band members are actually Australian.
The original LRB just released two compilations for any diehards out there: "Ultimate Hits" and "Masterpieces"

I love LRB and I feel like they are Australia’s answer to The Hollies and CSN, and Cool change is LRB’s answer to CSN’s Southern Cross. Oh my! Just looked it up. This song came first by a couple years. Wow.

Closing my eyes and listening to this song I am always transported back to 1980 at Doak Campbell Stadium during their concert. This is one of my wife's favorite songs! Mine too. I can close my eyes and see myself in a 42 foot ketch sailing on the open sea! Great video to go with this song! LRB is a terrific (Aussie) band! Amber, being at sea is truely amazing! My wife and I did a 7 day cruise to Alaska (which I highly recommend). The ship was huge when you're up close at the pier and getting on board. When you're out at sea, suddenly that massive ship seems tiny in comparison to the immensity of the ocean!

“Now that my life is so prearranged…I know that it’s time for a cool change” As some one born under a water sign (Cancer), I have related to this song from the first time I listened to it. I feel no closer connection to nature than when I'm on the water. There is no better feeling (to me) than being on a boat alone with only the sounds of the sea. It has always revitalized me and restored my spirt. The warmth of the sun, the wind blowing through the sails and rigging and communing with God to understand how truly blessed I have been. Now I'm in my sixties it still holds true. When the pressures to perform and succeed at work, (and in life) start to weigh me down. .When I feel that part of me that makes me who I am, starts to become a memory and not a passion. Then it's time to recenter myself. I have, several time over the past 40+ years had to take time for a "Cool Change". Love your channel and what you do, Be Blessed
