"It's A Long Way There" (long version) is a real BANGER. Worth a listen. One of the best road trip songs IMHO. Show this comment some love if you like. 😃
Wow. I had the strangest reaction to hearing this song for the first time in decades. I teared up. I think it hit me on 2 levels. Just the nostalgia of taking me back to the late 70s and what was going on with me at that time. And then the idea and imagery of the song in present day. Because that is where I am in life now. Parents passed away, nothing left for me there, so I moved far away near the water. I'm content and happy.
This song rings true for so many people because people don’t take care of themselves. They are so busy taking care of others, but they don’t pay attention to their needs. It’s timeless.
Yeah. That kind of surprised me. I think this song is definitely an "A". It may just be a song that might grow on them over the years. ......or not. To each their own, right?

December 1979, I was discharged from the navy after a 4-year enlistment and I felt like so much was expected of me from family and friends. I didn’t want to let them down by my choices but I had to live my life as I saw best. This song, more than any other, resonated with me. I identified with its mentions of being out on the water and the solitude I found there in the middle of the Pacific, especially at night with the moon overhead - the endless horizon - what awaited me beyond that horizon? 45 years later and this song still causes me to pause what I’m doing and recall its meaning in my life then and now.
Your comment is wonderful. We were stationed in the mountains of Utah, my hubby was discharged from the Air Force in Dec of 1979, also after a 4 yr enlistment. We came back home to our beautiful state surrounded by 3 of the Great Lakes. This cool song always reminded me of and made me long for home at the top of Lake Michigan until we got back there. Loved the mountains, but I missed our aromatic fresh water Lakes, the utter beauty of still nights with the Lake like glass, sugary sandy beaches, white birch trees, the northern lights, and smoked fish. Now I'm landlocked in the middle of the state and back to missing the Lakes and beaches.
This is my go-to song when I need to disengage from everything and just relax. It's not only a yacht rock staple for all the obvious reasons, but also an introvert's anthem :D
I disagree. I love the LRB, but this song is boring. The chorus is repititive and even the sax is just...there. Andy was right in that it's safe. I graduated in '82, so I knew this type of music well.
I think a B is pretty spot on. It's a solid song and recording but I can't think of a single aspect of it that makes it stand out in the grand scheme of things. There's nothing particularly ground breaking, unique, or ear-catching about the arrangement, the performances, etc. Its not doing anything that a hundred other songs had done at that point. Its just a solid, but not particularly noteworthy ballad. So a B fits. Its a professionally written, performed and recorded piece of music. But compared against the whole of music, or even just the whole of music that Andy & Alex have heard - B feels right.
I grew up with LRB playing in my house constantly, on vinyl and 8-track, and they have better songs than this. It's a perfectly good song, but they can't all be S tier. This is their song where everyone at the concert lights their lighter, and slows things down a bit, and it serves It's purpose. I often disagree with both these guys, but I always thought this song kind of dragged on too much, but with inspirational lyrics to rescue it. I'd much rather hear Lonesome Loser or The Night Owls.
I grew up with this song and I tear up everytime. It's beyond nostalgia. It evokes a feeling that I can't describe. I very rarely get that vibe with a song
Little River Band - "It's A Long Way There" (8+ minute version). This should be next. Smooth groove, exceptional guitar solo(s). Really should hear this...
My brother in law loved the ocean. Had he not been murdered that night in the early '80s, he would have gone up the gangplank onto a US Navy ship for his second hitch the next morning. We always celebrate him when hearing this song. Different I know but there it is. Lovely.
This song is a dichotomy of both melancholy and optimism. Contemplating a safe but toxic relationship and deciding to finally live life on one’s own terms. Heartfelt, beautiful song. I knew Alex wasn’t vibing to it when he was shaking his head like he was listening to AC/DC. Andy got the point of the song. Maybe when you guys have a few more years under your belts, give it another listen and Alex will get it too.
Alex lost me on this one...and that's rare. Andy's on point here. I think you'll understand it vibe of this song when you're older, or have a life experience to connect it with.
This was my favorite song in the 7th grade. I still love this song. LRB was fantastic. I got to see them in concert, they were great. They had so many hits.
Guess Alex doesn't connect to the Ocean? This song is one of the best at giving you that feeling of peace and calm, when you are alone with your thoughts at the ocean. Oddly enough I'm a fire sign and connect to the ocean like the Albatross and the Whales are my brothers! This song and Southern Cross are my two fav's to remind me how beautiful the ocean can be. A+ all the way.
I appreciate the honesty of the reaction. No song hits everyone the same, and you can't feel what you just don't feel. For me... this song hits me right in the feels.
I guess it's a personal thing but this is my favorite LRB song. I think it creates a zen space we all need from time to time. Love the dynamics of the soft to powerful, the harmonies, the sax solo. It may not hit your mood just right but I think you're hard pressed to fine a way to improve it.
To me, this song just resonates with me in a special way; I would say it’s my favourite LRB tune. Maybe you need to have a personal connection with the water to appreciate it.
Definitely one of those songs that brings nostalgic feelings the more you listen to it. It may just be that it could take a few more listens for it to catch on what a solid song this is. It's like a lean steak with just the right amount of fat for flavor.
I think "Sailing" by Christopher Cross came up for this question. I want to re-introduce it, a magical, beautiful song, also a bull's eye for your request for some "yacht rock."
They are from Branson, MO. Most of their tunes are Ozark mountain music. I personally know the band leader's little sister. (He wrote a lot of their tunes and unfortunately died in an airplane crash, a mega talent.)
Not trying to be a hater or anything, but I do hate the term Yacht Rock. Don't know when that started but it has nothing to do with the people who loved and supported them in the beginning.
Love this song, It's what I play when I'm feeling blue! Swear it takes my blood pressure down about 20 points!. All Major chords me thinks. and as Jalah has mentioned "It's a Long Way There" has tasty solos. Reminiscing was my wife's song for about 30 years. She passed away at 51.
My mom actually introduced me ti this song, and it became a staple when we took the boat out, especially when we were out on the water at night. Still love this song.
Being born in the sign of water, this tune has always held a special place in my heart. Sentimentality aside, this piece is beautifully composed, flawlessly performed, and well engineered. A lovely song imho. Y'all didn't seem to be very impressed... LRB has a huge catalog. Dive right in, the water is fine. You guys may experience a "Cool Change" in spite of yourselves.😉 Thanks for covering this one!
There are many songs that give me a feeling of nostalgia because they are associated with specific times in my life. This song has always given me that same nostalgic feeling even though it has no particular connection to any event in my life beyond just hearing it play.
Along with their incredible vocals, another example of an absolutely joyful song from the magical era of the 70s and 80s....LRB is one of Oz's great music gifts to the world, along with others too many to name, but let's give it a try shall we? Let's start with the angels, Helen Reddy and Olivia NJ, then Men at Work, Midnight Oil, INXS, Air Supply, this group (my fave Aussie group, just on the vocals alone). Thank you Australia for giving so many tunes that are part of the songbook of my life. And God bless Alex and Andy for listening to all his great music from the greatest era in pop/rock music, the 60s-80s. The only bummer is you didn't like Karen and she is my fave singer ever, but hey, music is subjective so enjoy and keep commenting. Chuck in NC
Tough, tough listen for me. My beautiful wife passed away five years ago, and Little River Band was one of her favorite bands, and especially this song. She also loved dolphins, so the EarthStudy video that is here on RUclips with Cool Change as the backdrop made for one amazing smile to look at.
I agree with Andy’s assessment of the mood created by this song. If you are in the right head space while out on the water alone, it’s a nice song to put through the speakers. Andy and Alex always back up their reasoning for their ratings. Respect!
Yeah. Agreed it's simple. But those harmonies are gold and powerful. It's easy to dismiss them today, since you can just punch them up on a computer, but that's real singing and they duplicate those massive tight chords in concert, too.
I never get when anyone says "It's simple"....the question is, does it sound good or not!!!!! Music doesn't have to be written by Beethoven to sound good. But hey, everybody has a right to like what they want 🫤🫤
Simple or “simply delightful”. There’s nothing about this tune that isn’t sublime. And, you can’t get on the yacht if you don’t rate this song A+ or higher.
This tune has much more meaning to those that have had to stress out over the daily rat race. Being on the water can decompress you so very quickly. That’s what this tune is about. Until you have a family, mortgage, credit card debt, and other life stressors, then this song has less meaning.
Cool Change is an emotional song for millions for many different people. This song and many from this genre have been used at Funerals and Memorial Services. The rating system has had its run.
A Cool Change in your life. Pivoting away from a bad situation. Leaving a bad relationship,or moving on from pain. This song has been embraced by millions of people. It speaks to people in a bad place and gives them hope. This is one of the most uplifting songs ever made.
There's a real depth of feeling to this beautiful song & it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I first set eyes on the ocean as a small child & I've felt it's pull ever since. So many seaside vacations over the years but it's been a while. This song brings back those feelings & I can smell the salt sea air & feel the cool water on my skin. Every person who feels that special bond & longing knows what I mean. Gotta get back. It's been too long. 🩵🐬💙🐚🩵🐠💙🐋🩵🪼🌊
Australian band - the concept of a cool change (say a sea breeze off the ocean on a hot day) might be more relatable to Aussies in the sense of what the song's message is
This is one of the most beautifully crafted ballads ever written, I don’t know what you been smoking. There’s a video of this song with dolphins swimming which you should check out for further inspiration. I trust this doesn’t put you off further LRB classics such as Home on a Monday, Lonesome loser and many other.
Guys-it’s the poetry and vibe that the words and music evoke. Close your eyes picture being on the beach and listening to this song without headphones. Play it in a car.
A song doesn't need to be a break down the door rocker to hit us at a cerebral level. It's good to let a beautiful song ease it's way into the theatre of our minds and let it do it's work.
Another LITERAL "Yacht Rock" song is "Southern Cross" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (really only Stills and Nash as recorded). Absolutely worth the listen!
This is one of those songs that you have to let hit you in the feels. Its absolutely cathartic when you are having a rough spot. Listen to Cool Change, Mr Blue Sky by ELO, and then Joy to the World by Three Dog Night. guaranteed mood changer.
This happens to be one of my all time favorite songs. I always put it in playlists of "relaxing" music, and it's generally in a number of my various playlists. A very very long time ago I worked at a "box" store and they played music on cassette tapes over the speakers. I asked if I could make 2 and they said sure. One of the 2 had this song. It's just...such a chill song and a vibe, but also hopeful and like a comforting blanket. Yacht Rock is not my favorite genre, but there is Something about THIS song. Thanks guys!
@@philipmartin5610 No... just telling it like it is. Litle River band were an Australian band formed in the mid 70s and played until the mid to late 80s. The band that calls themselves LRB (Little River Band) in the States is just an American band that has a member (who is American) who happened to play a short period of time in the original line up as an additional guitarist during some tours of the States in the late 80s. He then had the idea to register the name "Little River Band" for himself (ie stole it) and has been touring for decades as LRB ... with no connection at all to the original members. When the original members wanted to tour as LRB 10 or 15 years back he stopped them with a legal injunction. Nice guy.
@@DavidWren-u3k The thief you're referring to is guitarist Stephen Hausden who started with them in 1981 and is actually British. Bassist Wayne Nelson is the American who stayed on after the originals had all left.

This song is meant to be very emotionally charged, but emotions are subjective. It should therefore not be surprising that it does not evoke the same level of emotion from everyone.

'It's A Long Way There' is IMHO their greatest song. The production and engineering in this song is the absolute best. I use this to balance levels when I am setting up a new system in a car or home theater. ruclips.net/video/PPsevhQkn68/видео.html

You guys may experience a "Cool Change" in spite of yourselves.😉
Thanks for covering this one!
Chuck in NC
You forgot to mention Moving Pictures with one of the greatest songs of all time "What About Me".
I'm so offended Alex didn't like this lol...I LOVE this song. It's beautiful.
That's just the point I made, don't be offended by someone's opinion. It's just that, an opinion 🤷
Never been on a sailboat in my life, but this song puts me there-- love the vibe!
Need to try it
@@Meandmymirror Yes!
Respect!
LRB - Night Owls. Banger. Period.
Yes
Yes!
This is a really good one
Couldn't agree more
BIG yes!!
Lonesome Loser is a fantastic song from these guys!
❤Yessss !❤
"Help is On Its Way" is an absolute MUST. "Lonesome Loser" is off the same album as "Cool Change" as well.
If you haven't done these two, DO THEM!
SUCH a BEAUTIFUL SONG!!! Makes me both nostalgic and emotional! JUST BEAUTIFUL!!! :) HUGS, YOU-GUYS!! Have a SUPER WEEKEND!!!
Planning to see them at the state fair here in a few weeks. I've never heard them live and I'm looking forward to it.
I saw this band live in 1980. They sound as good live as they do on record. Amazing musicians.
This tune has much more meaning to those that have had to stress out over the daily rat race. Being on the water can decompress you so very quickly. That’s what this tune is about. Until you have a family, mortgage, credit card debt, and other life stressors, then this song has less meaning.
I think you guys really would love “Roll Me Away” by Bob Seger, one of his best songs in my opinion.

Why was Andy apologizing for liking the song?
There's a real depth of feeling to this beautiful song & it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
I first set eyes on the ocean as a small child & I've felt it's pull ever since. So many seaside vacations over the years but it's been a while.
This song brings back those feelings & I can smell the salt sea air & feel the cool water on my skin. Every person who feels that special bond & longing knows what I mean.
Gotta get back.
It's been too long.

Australian band - the concept of a cool change (say a sea breeze off the ocean on a hot day) might be more relatable to Aussies in the sense of what the song's message is
Singers British
@@GUITARTIME2024 Well, he was born there yes but was only 10 years old when his family moved to Australia. So more of an Aussie, I'd suggest
This song is on my "Easy Listening" playlist that I listen to when I am having a hard time falling asleep.
Right, " easy listening," not " yacht rock." Lol
IT'S A LONG WAY THERE! First song on their first album....a jam like no other... studio long version only!!!
You need to see the actual video to this song showing the waves, dolphins and such
One of the only videos I've ever liked to any song - outstanding! ☮🖤🤘
I love this song, especially when you see the video that goes with it. To each his own A+
This is one of the most beautifully crafted ballads ever written, I don’t know what you been smoking.
There’s a video of this song with dolphins swimming which you should check out for further inspiration. I trust this doesn’t put you off further LRB classics such as Home on a Monday, Lonesome loser and many other.
Amen!
Oh wow. Did not expect that. This one's deep for me.
Absolute all time favorite!
Video is so cool...dolphins ❤❤❤❤
I think it’s a great mental health/unplug/recharge song. Like it better than “Reminiscing.” Got it on a playlist w/Christopher Cross, etc.
Love this song! It’s great to listen to when driving a long distance. ❤
Saw these guys in concert about 20 years ago. The harmonies are that tight live.
The LRB you saw is nothing to do with the original band who formed in Oz in the 70s.
It's effectively a LRB cover band who stole the name.
Geez. I assume you’re the kind of person that tells kids there is no Santa Claus.
This song is the song I listen to when I need to pivot my life. Fantastic song played after my father in law's passing. He loved sailing and getting out on the open water. Love this song. Probably time for it again. Thanks.
Love this song. Very retrospective!
This song is meant to be very emotionally charged, but emotions are subjective. It should therefore not be surprising that it does not evoke the same level of emotion from everyone.
I used to crew on sailboats on Lake Superior back in the 70's and this song has always brought me back to that time.
Classic songs you haven't heard from bands you already love. Deep Purple: "Strange Kind Of Woman", "My Woman From Tokyo"; Heart: "Kick It Out", "Cook With Fire"; The Cars: "You're All I've Got Tonight" (Elliot Easton guitar banger...so much guitar!); Santana: "She's Not There" (yes, Zombies cover), "No One To Depend On"; The Guess Who: "No Time" (fuzzy guitars galore); Paul McCartney: "Helen Wheels" (non-album single from the Band On The Run sessions); Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Midnight Special"; Velvet Underground: "Sweet Jane", "Cool It Down"; Sex Pistols: "Pretty Vacant"; Nirvana: "Come As You Are", "All Apologies"
Little River band greatest hits album! Great reaction!
This song change my life....LOVE IT!!
'It's A Long Way There' is IMHO their greatest song. The production and engineering in this song is the absolute best. I use this to balance levels when I am setting up a new system in a car or home theater. ruclips.net/video/PPsevhQkn68/видео.html
If you have never been to Sea and Experience the Sun Setting like the Ocean is Swallowing it, And the Moon and the Stars so Bright, You can just almost reach out and touch them, While the Cool Ocean breeze hits your face and hair, Nothing to describe the it but Chill, I still crave it after all these years, The sensation on your Senses is addictive!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
So many cooler artists and more challenging stuff to check out: Gang of Four ("Damaged Goods"/"I Found That Essence Rare"), Psychedelic Furs ("India/Sister Europe"), Jesus & Mary Chain ("Just LIke Honey"/"You Trip Me Up"/"April Skies"), Smashing Pumpkins ("Cherub Rock"/"1979"), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club "Spread Your Love"/"Rifles"), The Church ("Under The Milky Way"/"Metropolis"), Wet Leg ("Chaise Longue"/"Angelica"), The Beths ("Expert In A Dying Field"/"When You Know You Know"), The Fall ("Totally Wired"/"Disney's Dream Debased"), Fontaines D.C. (apologies if I missed your reaction to any of these).
Love this song.loved it so much when it came out . I was working and going to college and rarely had time for myself. It reminded me to "cool" it and take a break. I think its an A song for sure.
I turned 58 in May. Even though I am still a classic rock nut job, the Little River Band makes the cut. This song always hit the "feels" when I was young and now more than ever. I am very close to leaving my "pre-arranged" life (job) and getting some alone time. I get it when they meant a "Cool Change".
Awesome song from LRB!
Great. Should also do their "It's a Long Way There"
Man, Who doesn’t love Little River Band ? A number of amazing hits. Songs to travel by or a lake run 🩷🤓
It's about time for some more LRB
