I cannot express how much joy I get when ppl discover John. He never got the credit he deserves and now the world gets to share what we just take for granted. A great singer and a lovely person.
Now you know why he is known as ‘The Voice’ in Australia. He is an icon here and we adore him. I was at this concert and this was an encore at the end of a 2 and 1/2 hour concert.
Australian John Farnham is the GOAT. He has a big, gymnastic vocal range and sings in over TWENTY genres. He has a 50 year musical career with top hits and recording albums in every decade. John is a charismatic showman with wonderful rapport with his audience. He is well loved in Australia. Always experience John singing LIVE where his Soul energy shines.
@@officialWWM Except that John Farnham is not 'in the business' of singing anymore and has not been for a while. He can only whistle and open his mouth very little. He still has to have more surgery. His bottom teeth were taken out in order for the surgeon to perform the operation on his cancerous jaw. That also required some of John's ribs to be removed to reconstruct the jaw. He's been through a very tough time.
I agree this legend can sing anything you want him to sing he's that good. He loves to interact with his fans, swings the mic stand around even bends down taking gifts while singing a high note just amazing. From rock to opera it does not matter for this icon. Oh and John is loved just as much over here in New Zealand, thank you Farnsy for all the years of the best vocals I've heard.

One the greatest and most powerful singers to ever grace this planet of ours. He Makes all us Australians proud. but No Thanks to cancer he probably will never be able to sing like this ever again. If he can’t we should all be okay with that, because his still with us. Plus he has an amazing back catalogue of music and videos like this for generations to discover and enjoy.
There’s not 70,000 people there, the concert is in what is known today as Rod Laver Arena . The Australian Open Tennis is held there and there would probably be about 20,000 people there.
John was teaching himself how to play this on piano. In order to get the chords right, he was playing them slowly. He decided he preferred it at the slower tempo, so he did this rearrangement. The reason everyone knew the song was that he originally released it in 1980 and this concert was in 1989.😊
Back story to this Cover....John Lennon heard this and loved it. This was Lennon's vision for the song but the record company pressured the band into making upbeat.

You must have worked at a different night or missremember from it being so long ago as this was not the final encore for this recorded concert. He came back on stage after Help for another encore to sing Sadie and It's a Long Way to the Top. It's on the Classic Jack DVD. When John walked off stage after Help he stood on the sidelines listening to the crowd (and orchestra) chant 'Sadie' before he came back out for that next encore to sing those two songs.
Most concerts were advertised as John Farnham and Band, or his band, or the JF band, this one was John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol This song is one of the last songs that he would sing at the end of the night after he had already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours. Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing during the TV special, but it was also on the 4th or 5th night that he had sung like this. Either way, it was one of multiple nights that he did this on January 4-10, 1989, so his voice is still worthy of the accolades. Not many other singers can belt like that for even 2 or 3 nights without a rest. And besides picking at the exact details or this exact performance, Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul. A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also. The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one. -Burn For You.. ruclips.net/video/4PPvOhPspEA/видео.html -Angels.. Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers. JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years. ruclips.net/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/видео.html -Amazing Grace.. This is Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field. ruclips.net/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/видео.html -Please Don't Ask Me.. This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well.. Edit- JF has announced he is free of cancer, but has not mentioned anything about singing again. ruclips.net/video/2uV_tZODfK8/видео.html -When Something Is Wrong With My Baby.... And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar. ruclips.net/video/AU_bCchDWF4/видео.html Or this version, both are great, but slightly different.. ruclips.net/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/видео.html -When The War Is Over… Possibly one of his greatest vocals. ruclips.net/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/видео.html -Or is the greatest. Gethsemane.. ruclips.net/video/k5woMZtClhI/видео.html -How about a mike test. He has the power and ability to distort microphones, blow up amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol Black Dog. ruclips.net/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/видео.html Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.

This is why i love watching peoples first time reactions to John (most of the time to this song) and just how awestruck they become with his voice. If you watch more of John which im sure you will it must always be live
He isn't just a national treasure , he's far more than that . Sometimes things seem to surpass beauty itself . I think unbelievable might be the landing spot .
This man is definetly one of the best male singers of all time and master of every music genre. His stage presence is from another planet, no autotuner and pitch correction just raw talent. ❤
It's like HOW GOOD , now folks that's how it's done . Perfection personified. 🇦🇺 Also John sings a very good Version of Black Dog by led Zep. He uses that song as a warm up before he goes on stage usually. . Hope you check it out . And thanks for your reactions. I been watching 👀 for a while .
Fun fact - Freddie Mercury thought that John was the best vocalist he'd ever heard, and that John should take his place after his passing. Queen did approach John to be their lead singer but he declined in order to stay in Australia with his family, having experienced the tour life when he was the lead singer of The Little River Band and deciding family life was what he preferred...
This urban myth gets shared in just about every Farnsy reaction. It WAS reported in Newspapers at the time, but has always been denied by Brian May and John Farnham.
@@MrDarkwing78 I've never heard this one before, but Farnham did do a song with Queen. One of their hits and they sounded really good together. I was impressed because I didn't think anyone sing instead of Freddy and not look bad.
@@studley2436 Most good urban legends contain at least a grain of truth or they would be discredited before they take on legs of their own. I’m unfamiliar with John Farnham playing with Queen, I’m a 1978 kid so I would have been too young to pick it up. It doesn’t surprise me at all that they played together, however a very basic search online discredits the story very quickly. It’s always possible it was true, but as I said it’s been denied by both John Farnham and Brian May, so there’s no way to really confirm this. You’re right though, Johnny could have fronted Queen, and he would have been magnificent.
@@MrDarkwing78 The head of Vox singing academy, who has met Farnham and spoken with him about it, confirms that Queen did approach John when they were looking for a new singer and talks about the event in his vlog, though comments with links are automatically deleted by RUclips apparently. The story of Peter Vox meets John Farnham is listed on his website however...
@ Found the article very quickly without links, thanks for the lead. Sorry to be contrary, but if you read the article on Vox carefully, Peter makes the statement about the offer to his audience, but he didn’t actually ask John if it was true. It’s nuanced, and definitely reads as fact, but Peter only asked John what the experience was like. JohnFarnhamdotfandom, Vogue and of course Wikipedia all say Brian May and John Farnham denied the rumour. Of course JohnFarnhamdotinfo agrees with you, as does the Sydney Morning Herald. It’s possible Brian and John have some reason to deny the offer, but I’m disinclined to think John is ever anything other than genuine.
What an absolutely GORGEOUS reaction. Watching your jaw-dropping awe as he hits those notes with such clarity and power makes me realise all over again just how good John is. Your joy at the whole performance is palpable, and forces me to share it. Thank you so much.
It is important to note that this was the last song of a 2 and a half hour amazing concert. John Farnham is a true Aussie icon. Unfortunately he has been battling cancer for some time now and can no longer sing. My first ever CD was Whispering Jack gold edition which is a masterpiece. Great reaction 👏
What a beautiful reaction to the best singer of all time. His voice is so versatile. He has tackled and conquered many, many genres. Try to always listen to him live. His studio albums are fantastic, but his vocals when he sings live are even better. Live is where you see John's beautiful personality, and truly amazing vocals. John loves to perform live and it shows. He shines on that stage. He always gives 110% of himself and gives a mind blowing performance every time. I'd love for you to react to John Farnham singing 'When The War Is Over' Live from the Whispering Jack concert.
Ah Emma what a beautiful reaction and analysis. I hope you journey a bit more down the John Farnham rabbit hole. You will absolutely adore the ride. @suelynch earlier in the comments provided a nice starting list to get rolling with so see the broad scope the many can deliver.

He sang this at the end of a concert. Ive trained in opera and he has all the similarities re vocal technique. Take the time to listen to his Black Dog which was never recorded for sale. It was just a warm up/mic check. It will blow you away

I was in our army and John Farnham came to East Timor and sang for us just before X-MAS DAY in a "Concert for the troops". He sung a heap of songs including "YOU'RE THE VOICE". It was an amazing experience to hear him at the height of his career.
As others have mentioned he has undergone surgery and treatment for Cancer. So whilst he may never sing ( well at least publicly), he has / is releasing a memoir this November, and I believe he is recording the audio book version of this.
He has said in a recent interview/article (it was on the SMH website IIRC) that he does still try to sing a little bit in the shower, however in true John Farnham style he said he can't yet open his mouth far enough to eat spaghetti!
A 'high note' John - "hold my beer, you haven't heard anything yet". Love him... The saxophone player was part of John's band, the orchestra added more depth to this. Every song of this concert was brilliant!
I admire your enthusiasm for an Australian national treasure: There's no one like Farnham. My girlfriend once described a John Farnham concert as being "dipped in warm honey for two hours" 😂

The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one.
-Burn For You..

-Angels..
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.
JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years.
ruclips.net/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/видео.html
-Amazing Grace..
To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa.
This is Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field.
ruclips.net/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/видео.html
-Please Don't Ask Me..
This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well..
Edit- JF has announced he is free of cancer, but has not mentioned anything about singing again.

-When Something Is Wrong With My Baby....
And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar.
ruclips.net/video/AU_bCchDWF4/видео.html
Or this version, both are great, but slightly different..
ruclips.net/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/видео.html
-When The War Is Over…
Possibly one of his greatest vocals.
ruclips.net/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/видео.html
-Or is the greatest.
Gethsemane..
ruclips.net/video/k5woMZtClhI/видео.html
-How about a mike test.
He has the power and ability to distort microphones, blow up amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol
Black Dog.

Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.
i had the pleasure of meeting him 20 years ago, he sat down next to me at a quarter horse show and we started to chat like we were friends. by far the most down to earth celeb i've ever met, we nearly missed both of the friends we came to watch from chatting
The shiver you get at the start is what we get every time we hear our John sing.❤

You said Opera well old Johnny know all genres including you guess it Opera look up Granada with Anthony Warlow.
It cuts through your soul . He owns it . Best version you will ever hear on planet earth !
John was born with pipes that shoot out flames. 🔥
Thanks heaps for the great reaction. No one can belt like the way John does, he’s no ordinary singer he’s a powerhouse vocalist. You need to check out performing his biggest hit “you’re the voice” live at this same concert with the MSO
This is why i love watching peoples first time reactions to John (most of the time to this song) and just how awestruck they become with his voice. If you watch more of John which im sure you will it must always be live
John Farnham - Playing to win 🕺🏼
John can sing anything from opera to hard rock the man is one of the best singers you will ever hear . This is a massive rabbit hole to go down
Hard to believe he was a smoker for years with that voice.
He isn't just a national treasure , he's far more than that . Sometimes things seem to surpass
beauty itself .
One of the most underrated vocalist in my opinion. You are wonderful Emma.x
Not only a great singer. But an absolute top bloke. He is an Aussie icon. You have to listen to his other songs
We certainly do adore our wonderful John here in Australia 🇦🇺 💕
So love this performane by John Farnham. It has everything. Superb!
He is the VOICE ❤ he makes us proud to be Australian. Incredible voice and great human inside and out
Burn for you makes me super emotional. It’s like an apology to hid wife. I can feel it!
Anything live, you cannot go wrong,
He is phenomenal. ❤❤
What an absolutely GORGEOUS reaction. Watching your jaw-dropping awe as he hits those notes with such clarity and power makes me realise all over again just how good John is. Your joy at the whole performance is palpable, and forces me to share it. Thank you so much.
Can’t go wrong with The Beatles!
Yes ya can
Keep in mind that this is an encore , after a full performance. The dude can really sing.
10pm The Voice. We are so proud of John here in Australia. My favourite is I burn for you. Listen to him sing that. Magnificent.
John's a legend 🦘, however i couldn't stop looking at your face... you are beyond beautiful!!!
It cames from Soul!!!
Our great Aussie icon..He has a great stage presence and his voice is something else.
Ah Emma what a beautiful reaction and analysis. I hope you journey a bit more down the John Farnham rabbit hole. You will absolutely adore the ride. @suelynch earlier in the comments provided a nice starting list to get rolling with so see the broad scope the many can deliver.
John Farnham is known as “the voice” in Australia for the exact reasons you have now joyfully discovered! He is a Master Performer in every way! Please always watch his live performances - he is absolutely incredible! Also, he is a genuinely lovely person, humble and very funny too! We love him so very much ❤❤❤
As i have said before John would be a world wide superstar if he chose to ,but he is happy being a absolute legend in Australia.
John is our Pavarotti, he is flawless and a first class entertainer
Wow, seriously? Will do!!!
Grew up listening to Johns songs... Thanks for the memory's John, and now enhanced by Emma. _So many great bands and solo artists came out of Australia at that time. Yea as I'm Australian I have a bit of a bias._ BTW... *"Your the voice"* fits your channel and the name of the next song by John.
Awesome reaction Emma! Thankyou. John can sing any style you throw at him. I could watch him sing and even talk, all day.❤
Grew up loving his music. He can walk on stage pick up a mic and will sound EXACTLY the same as his "tape or cd" 😁
Type in John Farnham and Tom Jones Hey Hey it's Saturday for one of the best live duo performances ever ❤
I’m not saying John Farnham is one of the greatest singers of our generation but John Farnham is one of the greatest singers of our generation :)
Australia’s GOAT and just a genuinely nice man. You are going to be inundated with suggestions and information.
Hi Emma, Thanks for sharing love your Reactions!
Glad you like them! 😘😘😘
Best reaction I’ve seen of this performance yet, I was lucky enough to be there at Rod Laver arena in 1989 as an 18 year old, best concert I’ve ever been to
I never get tired of watching new reactions to John Farnham.
Have you seen ' It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll '? At this same concert. It's nice to see you back. Thankyou for reacting to John🥰
How good was his connection with the orchestra ?. The performance was in his home town , and we love him ! Thank you !!
Time to jump down this rabbit hole Emma. Only warning is, it's goes deep. Just make sure it's live and you're ready to party.
Wow, amazing cover of that song and fantastic voice. Thank you for sharing and I really enjoyed your reaction and analysis.
He sang this at the end of a concert. Ive trained in opera and he has all the similarities re vocal technique. Take the time to listen to his Black Dog which was never recorded for sale. It was just a warm up/mic check. It will blow you away
From shock to awe in less than five minutes!
He IS the best. Full stop. Love you Johnny.
I love with all my heart when people react to hearing this for the first time and you did not disappoint! The greatest “Voice” to come out of Australia if it the world. Pleas look up another great video of John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes singing “ when something is wrong with my baby”! It will blow you away as well as many others from these two incredible singers ❤
He sang with Laura Brannigan, Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Celine Dion, Olivia Newton John…
I'm the first here wow New Zealand in the house.
That is because you are 3 hours ahead of Australia... 😂😂😂
To say AMAZING seems not enough! Great find Emma!!!
