I've been flying for 3 years and this still hits home for me. I always got down when I didn't outperform the fastest person or I didn't get within a few seconds of the fastest lap times. I've only recently started realizing, and this advice helps alot, that as long as I'm improving from last year and having fun, I shouldn't care about not being 1st, or top 4, or top 16. Last year at Champs 2019 I placed 82nd in Pro class and I was super happy. This year I got 39th, and was really disappointed in myself. Id been practicing for months and putting in all the effort to get top 20, but it didn't happen. Only a week after Champs this year did I actually go "You know what? I did really well this year. Not only did I improve by 43 places, but I also had tons of fun.". Please don't be down if you don't reach your goals every time. If at first you don't succeed, try try again. This is still a very young sport and I believe that we still have years and years of great racing ahead of us. Be patient, fly fast, have fun.
Definitely. I think as racers we tend to be competitive and hard on ourselves. Which is good for pushing us to improve. But it's important to realize it's a journey and to recognize our success as well! Congrats on your massive improvement from last year! Onwards to next year!
Great video. I would add if you love racing it shouldn't matter to you that much if your first or last you race for the fun and experience and for the excitement. You might be one of the best at it but when it came your turn you crash out. Thats racing.
Excellent advice!!!! Took me ages to figure that out. Now I just go to a race to have fun and often times when I’m not thinking about the competition I wind up on the podium. 👍👍
Definitely, its easy to get wrapped up in the competitiveness (after all we are all competitive if not we'd not be racing) and get upset when we don't perform. This is important to make sure we have the right mentality and keep improving while not burning out :)
@@DroneRacingAcademy yep. The burn out happened to me during this covid bs. I used to fly a few packs every day but then when I was out of work I was hitting anywhere from 30-100 packs a day plus hitting velocidrone and drl and then one day 4 months woke up and just had no want or need to fly. But the itch is back and the break I think helped. I set up utt 1 just for kicks and smashed my lap times on my first pack. From a 16-18ish lap down to a consistent 12. Could be just that first time back lucky spike but we shall see on my next off day😉

That thing about being just a little better the next day is at the heart of Toyota's concept of "kaizen" or continuous improvement. Kudos!
Omg Kaizen.. haha such an engineering / MBA topic to bring up :P And yes! It is Kaizen for self improvement!
Very impressive!
Great advice! It can be applied to anything we want to be good at!
Yes very helpful life advice in general, especially for starting new hobbies of any kind :)
