Firewire 5'3 Seaside in bigger surf

  • Over the weekend, we had a pretty decent swell. It wasn't huge but bigger than our usual surf.
    I surfed Bolsa Chica on my Firewire 5'3" Seaside. I have wondered what the limits are for this board. And I think I have my answer although vaguely.
    In terms of catching waves, the limit is the volume that you can paddle. Because it is wider, it will plane a bit so might get you in earlier than a gunny performance board.
    In terms of hold, because it is a quad, it holds just fine. I think the biggest wave I caught was about 5' and the board was easy to bottom turn and line up.
    In terms of maneuvers, this is where things change. I think if it is too fast of a wave, it will be harder to get performance out of the seaside due to its width. Obviously, skill matters. But generally speaking, when you get going too fast, it is harder to set the rail.
    If I surfed this size constantly, I think I could fine tune my skills to get more performance out of the board but unfortunately, my waves are usually smaller and weaker. :(
    Hope this helps give you confidence that the board will work in "bigger" waves. Bigger is relative of course. And if you are more skilled than me, it should be much easier in bigger steeper waves.
    But for sure, this day was the biggest I have on film on the seaside. I have been out once before on a bigger day. It was much bigger, steeper, and closed out. But the board still held.
    Thanks for watching

    Totally agree, super versatile board and probably the best I’ve ever bought, fun as a twin or quad and covers 90% of the regular surf I see, fun on a head high clean day, but any chop on bigger days can get a little challenging

    Nice, you actually went out. I was there, all my picky friends backed out and from the looks of it 99% of everyone in the parking lot backed out to. I let them get in my head and I totally regret not going in. For years I tried my hybrid/fishy grovelers from Newport to Bolsa on bigger days and always got wrecked. It took me a long time to realize the extra width, float, deep concave and flatter rocker would either cause me to get hung up on the lip and if I did make it into the wave it was uncontrollable. Been riding user friendly shortboards with flatter rocker, curvier outline, rounded tail, thruster... and so much more confidence on the drops and actually easier to make it into the bigger stuff. My amateur advice is that I noticed that the surfers who buy the machado boards tend to only have those in their quiver, they are great for the majority of our surf but are skewed towards the lower end. Don't pigeon hole your quiver...

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      agreed. still searching for my top end board. I had a 5'8 Holy Toledo but because of the low volume, it too was only good to about 6'. But I had the two best barrels on it at bolsa on back to back waves on a good south swell.
      Maybe a pyzel.

    Stoked to find someone riding this board at the break I frequent most. I'm planning to get one this weekend and was hoping it would be a good all-rounder and daily driver for Bolsa Chica to Newport waves (with some Trestles now and then). best all around daily driver I have surfed so far. My list over the last 10 years at bolsa is as follows:
      6'1 Surftech Ratboy. 3 out of 10.
      5'8 Firewire Dominator 6 out of 10
      5'6 Firewire Dominator 5 out of 10, for some reason, the 5'8 surfed better for me.
      5'4 Firewire Potatonator 6 out of 10
      5'1 Baked Potato 8 out of 10
      5'6 DHD Pistolwhip 5 out of 10
      5'8 Sharpeye Holy Toledo 2 out of 10 (great board, bot not as a daily at Bolsa. I did catch my two best barrels of all time on this board on the same day back to back)
      5'6 Sharpeye Modern2 6 out of 10
      5'3 Firewire GoFish 8 out of 10
      5'3 Firewire Twice Baked 6 out of 10
      5'3 Firewire Glazer is a 7 out of 10 - great board, "daily" is the key word. I seem to have to work a bit. But on better waves at bolsa, easily an 9 of 10
      5'7 Firewire Chubby Chedda 4 out of 10
      5'7 Chas (not sure of model) 4 out of 10
      5'3 Firewire Seaside 9 out of 10
      IMPORTANT: "daily driver". the way I look at this is 9 times out of 10, I will have fun on this board if I showed up not knowing the conditions. This is specific to Bolsa.

      @@ThomyeSurfs
      Awesome. Thanks for the feedback. A couple of those were on my list to consider but based on all the reviews I've seen for the Seaside, its been highest on my radar.
      Initially, I was looking for a fish with glide and flow that I could cruise in knee to shoulder high surf, but with the ability to do a little more top to bottom surfing without breaking loose. When I started to see there were some fish shapes out there that could be surfed a little more high performance, while still flowing like a twin fin, that really got me interested, especially in the Seaside as a potential 1 board quiver.
      I've been fooling around on a Catch Surf Stump (5'0, 36L) in waist to head high, so I'm basing my specs off the liters on this board which has allowed me to get into most of the waves I want. Hopefully the 5'8" with 35L will do the same, and maybe the added length and width (over the Stump) will help it grovel a little better as well as give me more board to work with in bigger/better waves.
      HSS has a few sizes of the Seaside to rent, so I can hopefully dial in the size, but its definitely the board I'm looking to buy.
      Thanks for the insight and details!

I would see these guys surfing boards that looked like mini longboards. i thought cant carve on that mini longboard but they were getting tons of waves and maybe they learned more on how to read and judge that size better and better with the many more opportunities they got...you still got some and charged...those waves were pretty much closing out... id enjoy the smaller leftover day if there were any. film look great ....do you see alot of quality get diminished after your upload...quality is never the same as the original video on my computer using 1080...but still looks ok. lighting is everything

    Hey Thomye, I have a question for you. I know you love the Seaside and I do too. Have you ridden multiple sizes of it? I’m on a 5’11” and want to go down a size or two. I’m 5’10” 200lbs. I’m definitely leaning towards the 5’10” which would drop 1.7L. The 5’9” would drop 3.8L . I love the board and want to get more maneuvers out of it instead of just blistering down the line speed. Thanks for your time. Love everything you make!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Год назад +1

      yes, i've ridden the 5'2 Machado dims which is 24.2L or so. Then these: 5'3@28.2L, 5'4@29.8L, 5'5@31.5, 5'7@33.6, 5'10@39.4.
      Since i'm only 140lbs, the ideal board for volume was the 5'2 Rob's dims. but the best length is the 5'4 for my height. Although i was able to surf all the sizes I tried and surprisingly well, the bigger I rode, the less maneuverable it become. so, having said that, I do know that the 5'7 was a tad tough so I would say this board should be ridden at least 2" shorter than your height.
      In your case, that would put you on a 5'8 Seaside. The shorter you go the more maneuverable it will get but the volume might become difficult at your weight. mathematically equivalent to me, you should be on just under 35L. so in any case, the 5'8 might be the call.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  7 месяцев назад

      I'm 5'8 and weigh 145 lbs. My seaside is 28.2L but I ride it bigger than I likely should. Ideally, I should be on the 5'2 which is 26.5L.
      If I were 175 lbs and taller, mathematically, I would be on a 34L board to stay on the exact same ratio as my 5'3 28.2L board.
      If I wanted to ride the equivelant 5'2 26.5L board, I would be on the 5'5 31.5L board.
      based on the numbers (mathematically speaking) you could go with the 5'5 and likely be happy. but you also need to consider rail and overall length. Since you are an advanced surfer, you should know if you have a wide or narrow stance. If you are wide stanced, go 5'6. the length will be better and you will have a liter more for better grovel.
      The board is super user friendly and I found that being 1" off on sizing on this particular board makes little difference. Maybe that wide point forward, not sure. Anyways, hope that help a little.
      Just consider your stance and the waves you will likely be surfing in. if small and softer waves, go 5'6. if punchy, then consider the 5'5 just to have a tad more flick.

      no issues catching waves on normal grovely smaller days. I think the width and curve of the board as well as it being helium, makes it not great at dropping into steeper waves like in the video. The waves in this video are not the type of waves you would want to surf with this board. I did it only to see if it could.

    love your videos! I want to get a seaside (or mashup ;)) and I need advice, I am 78kg, intermediate. I am struggling to decide between 5'07 (33.6L) and 5'08 (35.4). I want some extra puddling power for small days but on the other hand, I am concerned that since its eps it will be too buoyant.
    what do you think? thanks in advance.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад +2

      if its paddling you want, the seaside is the better choice. not only will it paddle better because of the foam concentration under your chest but it is wider so it will plane better, sooner, making it easier for catching waves. Since you said you were an intermediate, I would start with a seaside and then upgrade to a mashup once you start dialing in some good decent turns.
      i have found my mashup to be very good for performance but I also went less liters than my seaside. One can go bigger on the mashup but to me, that seems counter intuitive since there is the seaside which is proven to be a great groveler.
      In all honesty though, you can't go wrong. given supply issues, sometimes you have to go with what you can get your hands on.

    Just seems a waste to take a 5'3 epoxy fish in waves like that. Just imagine the carves you could do on a 5'9 round tail shortboard. I too spent years wasting sessions on the wrong board. Makes me shudder to think of it now.

      Unfortunately, It was the only board. Also, I wanted to see what the seaside could do. I would normally take a 5-8 holy toledo out on a day like this but I sold that board. I am eyeing the HT2 5'9" as my new step up. But I am planning a trip to Fiji and might need something a little bigger. Really stuck on what I should buy. Something more for here or something specific for the trip.

    Question: did you stay within your typical Liter range on the Seaside, or did you go with more Liters than you would on your typical shortboard?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      hard to say. I was all over the place with liters. For example, i was riding a 5'8 dominator and a 5'6 dominator. I was also coming off of a 5'4 Ponatonator, and a 5'1 baked potato. all those boards were above a 27L with the 5'8 coming in at 31. I demo'd the 5'3 Seaside at camp shred and thought it was too big for me in terms of liters so I ended up buying the 5'2 seaside but in the machado dimensions, not the stock. The liters on that is like 24.5 vs 26.5. It wasn't the liters that bothered me, when I saw the footage on myself on the 5'2, it just looked too short. To be honest, the stock 5'2 liters would be ideal for me but I think it would still have looked the same under my feet as the Machado dim 5'2.
      Anyway, this board is so versatile and forgiving, my brother's 5'4 seaside feels almost the same as my 5'3. I weight 145lbs on my heavy days. I float between 138 and 145. I personally think the size is more important than liters on the low end and liters become important on the bigger boards because the rails and width are too big.
      Hope that didn't confuse you. Anyways, this board is middle to upper part of liter range. I would prefer it to be 5'3 and 25.5-26L. but having it at 28.2 makes it a better groveler for smaller days.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      on the seaside, depends on the skill level and waves. you could go with the 5'2 machado dims which comes in at 24.2L or the stock 5'2 dims at 26.5L. you and I weigh the same so from that perspective, you can still go with a 5'3 or 5'4. but at your height, to get a good ratio between your board and stance, 5'2 to 5'3. Without knowing any of the other details, it is hard to recommend something specific. Having said that, the seaside is a very user friendly board. I have surfed several sizes and they all work, but the bigger I went, the less performance it had. it just got harder to push around.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      I think either the 5'3 or 5'4 would be good for you. If you are experienced and an advanced surfer, then 5'3 is the way I would lean. Just so you have a shorter board, unless you surf with a really wide stance. Then, the rail line on a 5'4 is better. I like both, 5'3 in most conditions and the 5'4 carries bettter on smaller days but if the waves get bigger, it is tougher and you feel it.
      I'm 5'8 tall but my stance is more like someone to is probably, 5'4 or 5'6. So the 5'3 Seaside fits perfect for "most" conditions for me.

      what are you on now? and do you feel it too big or too small. the good thing about both the Seaside and Glazer is that you can size up. I have ridden the Seaside in 5'2 all the way up to a 5'8. the only thing I noticed was that as it got bigger, I could surf it in smaller and smaller waves but as the waves got bigger, it just got a little tough. too much board to set rail. Having said that, i'm 5'8 and 145 so for me to actually be able to surf the 5'7 effectively speaks a lot to the board. it's just a very user friendly controllable board.

      @@louisrouaze4723 at your height and weight, it should not be a problem. the board is loose enough to turn, width, especially with a quad or twin setup, actually turns easier. The rails thickness would normally be a concern but at 200lbs, you'll be fine. Early on in you progression, the best advise I can give you is, don't ride small boards. I made that mistake and ruined my surfing. I rode a buddies board which as small, thinner, etc. I caught one wave and felt like it surfed way better than my bigger board. So my next board, i ordered thin, narrow, small. The issue was, I went from catching 40 waves session down to like 10 waves and only 1 of those were good enough to progress and learn. slowed my progression down a lot, almost went backwards and like an idiot, I stuck to it rather than going back.
      Anyways, in regards to your almond. All soft tops and foamies surf slow. you get on a good wave they move but on compared to a hard board, they don't feel right to me.

I am 6’ and 175-180lb and feel those sizes are right size for me. Right now I am thinking of getting Seaside, but I don’t know which size I should get, 5’7’’ 33.6L or 5’8’’ 35.4L. If HE is more buoyant than LFT and 5’7’’ is more like 34L, I want to get 5’7’’. So could you answer my question? Thank you.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      For sure helium is more buoyant than lft. In fact a good way for you to test this is by floating the evo and your cymatic. Since you have both of them and the Evo is helium it should float like the cymatic if not a fraction better. Having said that if I'm not mistaken the 5'7 evo is 20" in wide. If you go with a 5'7 seaside I think you're adding over an inch of width. I would venture to say you're better off on a 5'6 seaside. Are you able to demo them. That would be your safest route.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      Rethinking this based on your height alone maybe 5'7 is better for you. That way the 57c side could be a little groveler compared to your Evo and cymatic
