Palm Springs Surf Club PSSC Review
Got to go to the Palm Springs Surf Club (PSSC) and let me tell, it was a blast. In this video, I cover the booking process, the different waves I surfed, which waves I liked better, how it compared to Waco Surf, and some helpful tips about the rotation.
I didn't go over price because the run specials so you would most likely want to take advantage of them. As an example, I bought 3 hours initially at full price. Then, they ran a holiday special for 20% off. I missed it but it made the price so much more appetizing.
If you happen to be one of those haters, then consider the wave pool a water park. Go and have fun.
Sorry about the audio, it doesn't seem smooth and consistent in volume....

Aloha Twin Pin mid-length Surfboard Review

Another Aloha board but this one is shaped by Kurt Henson out of Lennox Head Australia. This Twin Pin delivers effortless paddling and versatile performance. With a low entry rocker, fuller outline, and forward wide point for added stability, its flatter deck transitions into low rails and a foiled rounded pin tail for maximum responsiveness rail to rail. Offering twin fin speed and smooth rail...
Best VALUE Performance Groveler - Aloha Jalapeno Surfboard

If you are on a tight budget, here is a board you can't pass up. Usually, budget board are low quality or don't have the best design; however, the Aloha Jalapeno, designed by Greg Clough, is a very capable and impressive performance groveler. The construction is PU and the build quality is fantastic, especially for the price. I can't find fault with it. At this price point, their boards are a s...

The Swiss Army Knife of modern day twin fins is how Matt Parker describes this board. It's rather fitting and an excellent description. I found this board to work really well in all conditions that I had the chance to surf. Although it's not the best at performance or the best at groveling, it definitely does all things well and therefore could likely be one of the best single board quiver opti...

At a price point of $600 US and often on sale for less, this is likely the best value UBER groveler out there. The design is wide but not too thick, the width allows for the board to plane on the surface of the water at much lower speeds which makes any small day enjoyable. Thumbs up for sure. Best Mid-Length with classic feel but excellent performance - LoveMachine FM Surfboard Review

Wow!!! Here is a board that looks good and surfs even better. I found this board to be super fun and likely the best mid-length I've surfed so far. It does have me curious about how much shorter I can ride it. The board was perfect for a mid-length for my little self but the performance was so good, it has me thinking that it can also be ridden much shorter. This definitely goes in my top 10 of...

Another amazing board shaped by Duke AIPA. I was a huge fan on his Dark Twin and now I have added another. The board is fast, lively, and responsive which makes it great in both small and better waves. Disclaimer, I only had 2 or 3 cracks at a "better" wave but so my opinion is based on them. The board definitely lit up once the wave a either bigger or steeper. Surfer: 5'8" 145lbs | 172cm 66kg ...

Huge thank you to Palo for loaning me his brand new 5'2 Machadocado. I really appreciate your generosity and trust. In a nutshell, the surfboard is good under 2 foot and fair conditions. Over 2 foot, the board was magic. It carried a lot of speed on its own but also had tons of drive for generating excess speeds. The video should show this since the waves started really bad and got better over ...

Sharpeye Inferno FT in Dark Arts Surfboard Review
Just bought this same board myself in the 7,2 range. Need find for it though, any recommendations?
Fins
Is the advanced takeoff and intermediate takeoff about the same? As an older guy the take off front side is my real issue, Surfing a wave is the easy part.
the advanced is a bit steeper but, you can also move over a bit and take off more on the shoulder. And a slightly bigger board will help get you in earlier and give you more time for the popup.
Hilarious!! 😂
Thomye you've really progressed in your surfing as of late and for a living testament look at Kelly! Last summer before my shoulder injury I was surfing the best I ever have (Bushman Flow Twinnie) and I'm older than you! Aaliyah once said "age ain't nuttin' but a number"......
🤣🤣 you ARE him Thom!!
Fire 🔥
Watched this on repeat more than I care to admit
Haha
Noel Salas? 😆
bro, you scared me. I thought I had accidently posted a vid of Noel Salas. LOL I had to double check and make sure it was Kelly.

He he he.😂
Awesome review this the exact review I was looking for...Still wondering if my flatter rocker 7ft 8 57 litre board would fot the advanced A frame session.....The left and right wave looks like it would chip in real nice...The flat rocker pop out will skip at anything overhead in the ocean
there were a few guys on longer boards. I didn't really see how they did, but they seemed to finish their rides and were having fun.
For any bigger guys trying to size this board just thought I would drop my weight and dimes. I’m 6’4 and 100kg (220lbs) I picked up the 5’8 which is around 42 litres and it feels perfect. Paddles like a dream have caught unbroken waves on this board. It feels lively underfoot and goes through fat sections with ease. I’m no local shredder I would say a pretty high level intermediate . Hope this helps.
Totally unimpressed! I´m 58 still riding boards in 36 - 38% volume range. For me surfing a board that doesn´t allow creating speed by pushing turns is BORING! Or having to use extra weight on back foot just to keep unneeded boardarea in front away from digging or pearling is stupid, surfing shouldn´t be about mastering the board, but about surfing the wave..
I agree with a lot of what you are saying but I would also say that if you aren't at that level yet, a bigger board helps. And reps are far more important that what a surfer thinks he is surfing like.
Great filming and thanks for all the effort.
Got the Plasic 5'6 used charged my outlook on the funny look.
Yeah, I love the look of the Plasmic. I have been wanting one from the start. I did the twinsman since it was available through varial for way cheaper. $1000 vs $1300. But in terms of outline, I really like the Plasmic. I'm hoping to find one used too.
@ThomyeSurfs it was a gift from God walked in the surf shop day before my birthday saw a used brand new Plasmic no dings or pressure dents for 500. I still can't believe it..looked like it was never used.
cost effective 👌 shot out to Aloha surfboards for doing the do.
Nice
Took my 7.0 out a few days ago in shoulder to head high surf with some good energy in it. The board lends confidence, for sure. You can take off a smidge earlier, even if its a sketchy take off, get around the lineup quicker and it provides great hold and stability... and is looser than it looks. There's something really comfortable about a longer rail line. At 80 KGs its an easy duck dive for me, but does take some getting used to as I do feel like Im encumbered with a big board when I am caught inside or scratching for the horizon - even though it IS easy to duck dive. Sometimes when you punch through you can feel the wave grab the back of the board and give you that 'I'm about to get sucked over the falls' good-time feeling. :)
Thinking about pulling the trigger and your vid definitely helped sell it. They should give you some commission$$
at least a free hour right? haha... Glad it helped.
@thomye how would you compare it to the inferno 72 and the lost sub driver?
although I have ridden the inferno FT, I have not surfed the 72. From the looks of it though, the 72 since it is close to the FT, seems like it is a bit more performance. I would say if your break has really good waves, then 72. if it is only fair to good, then DD. The sub driver looks similar to the DD, maybe even a bit more grovel power. Maybe that one is for poor to fair to good. I'll try and get to surfing some Lost boards soon, I think the only one I have ever reviewed was the Hydra.
@ThomyeSurfs have you tried the happy everyday? I surf slopey points in santa cruz. Have a pyzalian2 and it just seems a bit slow. So looking for something that will have a bit more drive but can still dig in rails. I got a gremlin trying to get more drive but feel like it has the combination of lots of rocker and thick rails which sort of seems to work against me where it won't dig the rails when i want to do sharp turns. Starting to think i need less rocker and more refined rails.
@@SaadiHowell I think you are spot on with less rocker and more refined rails. The one thing with Pyzel boards that I have seen is that he makes most with Hawaiian rockers. Santa Cruz, Pleasure point and Steamer, seem softer. I've seen Steamer look epic but still soft relative to Hawaiian waves. From what I've seen, the Happy Everyday is somewhat chunky for it's length, what length is your pyzalian? What liters do you normally ride? what is your height and weight?
@@ThomyeSurfs pyzalian2 is 5'11" at 30.2 Liters two other boards i ride regularly are the ghost 6' at 29.7 Liters and the Lost RNF retro at 5'5" at 30.75 liters. I'm 5'10" at 178 LBS, trying to get back down to 172lbs. The rnf is great but looking for something that be slightly more high performance. I've tried these boards: pyzalian2, gremlin, xero gravity, sword fish, rnf 96 trying to find that daily driver that paddles good, planes but can dig a rail and go vertical. Now looking at inferno 72, dumpster diver 2, happy everyday, sub driver, rad ripper, the ripper. Trying to find the board that will fill that hole in my quiver.
@@SaadiHowell all those are such good boards. My favorite board of all time for performance up to now, is the Sharpeye FT. I have yet to try the 72 but it looks amazing. Although a friend of mine said the FT was better, but he was comparing a PU72 vs a Dark Arts FT. We dont' know which made it better, the model or the construction. I would categorize that one as a performance board for sure. The others to me seem more like performance grovelers or grovelers. I am impressed you surf at such low liters for your height and weight. You are very close to a Pro ratio at the moment with a weight of 178 lbs, 30.2L seems small to me even for a performance board. Anyways, other than the dumpster diver 2, I have not tried any other boards on your list. Based on design I would say if you want more performance, go with the 72 or take a look at the FT even. If you need a daily driver, I would say that the DD2, Sub Driver will be more performance groveler oriented than the Everyday and Ripper. Not so sure about the Rad Ripper. Tail is wide, great for grovel but likely lacks top end performance. I hope to be able to test some of these models someday. I always go to Sharpeye.com and look at their used boards. A lot of them are new but under the used category. Great deals but not always in my size.
So basically, the dominator 2 is not a groveller, the seaside is...
depends on who is surfing it. the D2 for any expert/pro is a groveler. In my review, I surfed it at my liters but it made the board too short. It did not grovel well at 5'4. If I rode it at a length that suited me better, it would definitely be a groveler. I'd be surfing the 5'8 which is like 30L. That is about 4L more than what I ride. The D2's super power is that it will surf like it is smaller. The shape of the board leans more towards performance board but due to the width to height ratio, it is technically a groveler. As for the seaside, it is more of a groveler than the D2. You would surf that shorter and wider. In smaller/softer conditions, the width makes the board plane easier. There by making it easier to surf in those conditions. Hope that made senses.
No feeling quite like when your new board arrives and you unpack it. Always feels amazing 👍
A store that ships to me (cheap shipping too) have the Thunderbolt version on 45% off (probably because it's discontinued), I'm thinking of a 6'8" to complement my 5'9" Lost Hydra (39.5L). I tried the Hydra yesterday for the first time and its cool, but still I struggled to get waves when it was knee-waist with 4-5 sec period and onshore (I know, but that is quite normal here). Swapped to my 6' 57L foamie and got way more waves, but feeling I need a bigger board with some more performance that the foamie for those days, what do you think?
6'8 sunday is still in my quiver. Although I don't get to surf it much these days, it is one of my favorites at that length. I getting the 6'8 is a good idea, it will sit between your hydra and your foamy, perfectly but not hinder your performance as much as a foamy will. I think the '68 is 48L if I'm remembering correctly. Also, at 45% off, sounds like a cheap way to find out. :)
@ThomyeSurfs I picked up a NSP Element 6'6" x 21.5 x 3" 52L on a sale today 😬 Tried it in crappy knee to waist this evening and its actually really good for what I paid. Light and catches waves really easy. Gonna hold off on the Sunday for now.
So great. Thank you for explaining this. Great video.
This Oceanside harbor???
No, i think it might be uppers. Can't remember but I know it isn't Oceanside. I have not surfed there in a very long time.
Hey would you order this board at your normal volume (which is a lot longer than I'd ever ride) or order it under volume?
depends on what normal is. my normal is 28L and the FM was 39L. So for me, no, I would not order this board at my normal liters. it's meant to be a mid length so you have to size it up. This one was 6'9 so I would want something around 6'6 at about 35L. I think 6'6 is the shortest they offer unless you go custom. But custom often changes the board too much and makes it a different board. Anyways, generally speaking, do don't get it at your usual volume, unless you are a mid lengther in which case, yes. :)
@ThomyeSurfs thanks buddy
😆 Jeff!
Funny shiattttt!!!!!!
Thanks for the review! one note, we drop the interval between sets significantly for the lefts/rights, that way you get just about the same amount of waves as the a frames. time between sets for lefts/rights is between 70-80 seconds. You were ripping!
thanks for the info, when I counted my footage, it didn't tally up or seem the same but maybe I counted wrong or flowstate didn't get all my waves. I'll have to make a correction if I was wrong. I'll also have to come back, I saw the lefts and rights you made for Jade and those look pretty good for turns. Anyways, appreciate the info.
Hahahaha
Wrong board size definitely I am 6.1 use 5.7! There I’ll use 5.4 looks nice waves!
These days I'm happy to be standing up. I can't see the foam but I can hear it. I do wish I had Russell's voice.😂
😂 I surf and my name is Yeff.. accurate.
😂anytime someone shows me video of my cutbacks
😂
hahaah so good
So it’s $1000 per person for three hours of surfing the A Frame? (12 surfers in water max = 15 waves per person per hour x 3 hours = 45 waves.
it was closer to 4 hours for $1000 at full price. Right now, I saw that they are running a special. $150/hr. At full price, it breaks down to about about $15 a wave ($1000 / 60 waves give or take a few waves). At the sale price, 4 hours would cost $600 which breaks down to about $10 per wave which is about the going rate in the US. if you ever thought to go, now is a great time, take advantage of the sale. I am hoping they keep it going past March.
Don't you think Kelly could be the next Silver Surfer in Hollywood???
Oh dang, never thought of that but it works.
Which fins did you use in this video of you ripping the too fish?
On these clips it was the Machado keels. I did a video though where I used two different fins at the same time and my surfing was way better. I basically made an asym fin setup. I used a keel on my toe side and a much milder keel on my heel side. It went so good that way.
@ crazy interesting gotta try that someday need to buy more fins lol
@@CoryMaxBernhardt NVS, save money. I have a code too. Use code:THOMYE for 10% off. The fins are already cheaper so they are a great value.
@@ThomyeSurfs Thanks for the sharing the awesomeness. ALways stoked to get new NVS fins! New Toys Ooooh 🤩
Have your tried the Sunday as a twin fin or 2 +1?
I've tried both. the Sunday as a pure twin was too loose for me. I think it went best with a trailer.
@ same too loose as a twin only. Do you remember which 2 + 1 set you used?
@@CoryMaxBernhardt I used the NVS Ocras as my side fins and the special offset middle fin. This was on the 6'0. On my 6'8, I surfed it as a 1 + 2. 7" fin with side bites.
Cool vid, Great idea, Nice waves, Good surfer!
How was it?
much easier and better for me than the 7'2. I only tried it once and as a quad. I would likely want to try it again but as a thruster. it would be an awesome summer board in town.
I have the 6’6 and it is my favourite board ever. I dont use it to grovel but it is my first choice board for waist high to well overhead. Iv had a 7’2 Moe, 6’6 moe mini, 7’2 CI Mid, 6’6 Form Flow stick and this blows them all.
no peeing in the pool
Lol. Was that a question or a rule? I did 5 hours consecutive which is a terrible idea. Luckily I didn't eat or drink anything. Although others were telling me they were peeing in the pool. Haha
paying money to sit in a crowd. kook pond
there is a rotation so it's a bit different than sitting in a crowd in the ocean. Usually the better surfer or bigger boards get the waves in the ocean. Trust me, if it's you and your friends, it is impossible not to enjoy it.
Great review. Thanks. Gotta get in shape and give it a try.
Looks kind of crappy in this setting, like they are trying to generate waves too frequently and it's not allowing the water to settle. Maybe other settings are better. Wave garden appears to be the superior tech for now. You still ripped though!
Yeah, it would be interesting to see what happens when Wave Cove by Wave Garden opens in Palm Springs. Competition is good, it will bring down prices. :)
I wouldn't pay that much for that wave
Thanks for the video Thomye. I have a gift card I need to use soon so this gives me some motivation - ready to Mash it up on the Mashup. Having some knowledge and experience working with surf parks, you'd think it be easy to make good waves and make it a solid business. Easier said then done, esp with the newness of the industry. When you have nothing to compare it to, save ski resorts or golf clubs perhaps, can make the challenge harder. In 10 years things will be very different, but we are still in the early stages. Who knows how Kelly made his wave outta seemingly nowhere and it's such a banger off the rip. Very different business model though than this - with DSRT Surf happening soon near this and Virginia Beach getting one, it's about to be off to the races with even more variety too. Interesting feedback with your preferences on this vs Waco too. Videos and recaps like this help move the needle. Cheers mate.
The evolution has been interesting to watch. I remember, initially Wave Garden had their wedge technology that had a wave on both sides of a pier that you could walk and spectate on. Austin TX had one, called N-Land. Kelly had his wedge/sled tech which to me looks like N-Land at a much bigger and better scale. Then Wave Garden after Kelly's pool came up with their Wave Cove technology, which I believe is likely the best value and has a decent wave consistently. Perfect swell at had Waco and now a few more, Boa Vista is likely the Gold Standard for Advanced and Expert surfers, it Waco x2 length. However, I'd imagine the value sucks. I have only seem footage of 1 wave sets. I think for the promo photos, they let the pool settle. Which in that case, would mean less waves over the hour. All of it has been interesting to witness. I think the next evolution in wave pool tech will be how to settle the water so that wave 1 is as clean as wave 40. I wonder if aerating the water on the shallow end would help with this. Anyways, just make sure to pick a day when the Ocean is flat and blown out. haha That way you won't feel like you missed out on something. Cheers bro
Thank you for covering the Lefts and Rights, there’s no footage or reviews online for this setting. Thank you for showcasing it!
You are welcome. I think the lefts and rights could be better if they ran it closer to the slab setting. The issue is, all the promo videos of the lefts and rights and/or slab wave only shows the first one which is clean. But I feel like that would only work with pros and promo videos. They wait around till everything is calm and clean. I think the lefts and rights would be ok or a better value if they only hand 6 guys in the pool. Then run 3 wave sets. Obviously, they dont' cuz of cost to revenue ratio. This is why somehow they need to lower the cost. Anyways, hope you get a chance to surf PSSC. Cheers bro
@ I got to surf Lefts and Rights yesterday, I completely get your claim that it’s not as worth the value as the A frame setting. There was so much waiting around between groups it just didn’t really do it. Sticking to A frames for now on, at least, until they do something to make the Lefts and Rights a more sensible deal.
