Rob Machado's Firewire Glazer Surfboard Review

  • Finally, here is my review of the Firewire Glazer. I wish it was in better surf but between working full time and my SoloShot failing me constantly, I only managed to get 2 days of footage. Having said that, I think the review is probably more accurate since it is in unfavorable surf.
    In all honesty, I don't think 2 days is enough to really speak well about a board but in those two day and in lack luster surf, I had a ton of fun. Given the shared DNA of this board relative to the Seaside, provided it is set up correctly, the feeling you get when surfing the Glazer is very close to the Seaside, although the Glazer feels more nimble. I think they compliment each other and should be in your quiver.
    Now having said that, there is probably a great deal of overlap. Where this board will shine over the Seaside is faster, steeper, and bigger waves. My 5'3" Seaside is 28.2L and the 5'3" Glazer is 28.7L. I thought maybe the 5'2" would be a better fit but lucky for me, it was the 5'3" that popped up on Craigslist. I think even though it has more foam, the fact that it is narrower and has a heavy V out the tail, it feels smaller and more nimble.
    Let me know what you think of the review.
    Next up, Twice Baked.

    Knocked it out of the park again, Thomye! I think I've learned more about board design, foot placement & surfing in general from your last few uploads than all the other surfing content I've viewed over the years combined! Great surfing again too, very precise & great flow, you surf like a 20 year old! So jealous! Inspiring though, it's great to see what is possible! More please, Sir! :)

    Great point on the subtleties of foot 🦶 positioning! And I can’t get enough of those frontside 360’s (I do them once in a blue moon 🌚). Btw, the twice baked potato 🥔 is WAY more high performance than I expected- didn’t see that coming! I use it when it’s small and then jump on my Sci Fi 2.0 when it picks up a bit

      I used to love my baked potato. it's all I ever surfed. But now after what you said, I'm looking forward to trying out the twice baked. The only issue for me is which one I should get. If I get the one I want, it would be the 5'1 but then it would overlap with my Seaside quite a bit. The 5'3 would be better for the really small or mushy days but I would lose a bit of performance.
      I'm leaning towards the 5'3 only because I know that people that end up watching a review of it will likely surf it bigger as well. It might be more relatable if I surfed something bigger to show that the board works well and it would be nice to glide through those flat days. :) Maybe I can demo it and do like a quick review. Ran out of surf funds with this last board. haha

      @@ThomyeSurfs good call. I’m 6’3, 225 so I went with the biggest one they make. The intent was for it to serve as “the cure to the common longboard” but I was shocked at how easy it turns and how fun and loose the twice baked potato 🥔 is! I need some surfboard funds too 😆

      @@thebensman9786 that's so funny. that's logic too. I can't longboard. I catch a lot of waves but I do not have any fun. I leave the beach like I didn't neve surf. I now surf my brother 5'5 baked potato when it is small. At first I thought, it was way too big and it almost felt like an LB but within a day, I got used to it and started to flick it around. I think your statement about the cure for LB has made my decision. I will go with the 5'3 and get as much grovel as i can without sacrificing too much fun.

      thanks appreciate it. I will say it's not easy and to be honest, i thought it would be a lot easier. I realize I don't have much flow and I'm rather scatter brained. The worst part after re-watching it is that I put an image of the seaside with the nose finished as a drawing instead of the glazer. haha
      It didn't help either that my family was pulling me away all day. A crap load of school drama with this distance learning and my wife started a DIY project on the house which involves, paneling, sawing, nailing, cocking, paint, trip. not fun. I was so frustrated with them every time they walked into my cave. So to be honest, I feel like I settled on the finished product. It could have been better. :( But I'll get better at it.

      I have those fins, the tri-keels, but sadly, i bought them in fcs2 before I bought the board. The board ended up Futrues so I placed an order for he Machado pivot fins. I'll have to review that so people know how the board feels with their intended fins. I like fin with a wide base which is why I started it with the Machado quad front fins. I would like large raked fins and that might actually feel better for me.

    Hello Thomye, thanks for your review, i love the way you talk about boards. I just had a hip surgery, (the same as Kelly, by the way i got the same haircut too ;) ) and I am looking for a board for my recovery. I normaly ride inferno 72 5'8 26.6L as a daily driver and i have found a Glazer 5'4 29.8L. Do you think this board has enough stability for a rehab ? and do you think the board is better with the Futures Machado Pivot Fins ? Ten years ago i had a biscuit for another recovery and it was the perfect board, i am looking for the same feeling. thanks for answer. Best regards.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  4 месяца назад

      Howzit. I think it is a great grovel option for sure, the Glazer that is and they are really cheap at the moment. I see them new for $499 in my local shops. But what I don't know is what exactly you are looking for in terms of rehab. I would say the extra volume is nice to put less effort in but if it is stability you want for your hips, I would think something that isn't a pin/round tail.
      It's funny because I was just talking to someone today about this. How I think swallows feel locked in and so stable. Yet you can perform when you need it. Pins for me, and maybe it is a me problem, tent to be really easy rail to rail which translates to unstable. Responsive but unstable. I like a wider tail for that like a Bobby Quad, or a El Tomo. My Mashup and Sharpeye FT feel more stable than a Glazer but also perform better since they aren't as wide.
      Again, sure if you are looking to take it easy on the hips or just need to get your shoulders back into it. Anyways, I also think a longer board might be a good call like the Moe mini or the new Boss up. That way you get paddle and stability, even they they are both round tails, they are much longer so lock in better. Hope that didn't muddy the waters too much. :( Let me know what your were looking to get out of the "rehab".
      Cheers bro, and quick healing to you.

      @@ThomyeSurfs thanks for your answer. In terms of rehab I need a board very stable on the front-foot, easy to paddle, a board whish let me enough time to stay down the line and to compress slowy on my front foot. Maybe I will buy a sharp eye Modern 2 or a glazer. To me I will not have enough volume on a babby quad at a good size. Or maybe a fisrt step of recovery with a sunday and a second with the glazer...
      The problem is that I realy don't like mid lenght, not enough manoeuvrability, offen so stiff and so heavy under my foot, it's affraiding me a bit because of that.

    Hey Thomye. Great review. I'm really thinking about picking up a Glazer....I've had a few Firewires and love the durability of the boards, but all my past FWs have been FST and now Helium construction. Since you've tried the different board construction types, I was wondering what your opinion on LFT is? I've heard some people comment that LFT is not as durable, and pressure dings are pretty common. Any comments on LFT vs. FST vs. Helium durability?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      Helium for sure is the most durable. Lft is less durable but compared to poly, still way better. I have a hard time buying poly cuz of durability. But I think it depends on the board too though. A mid length is likely better as a poly or any board longer than 6'6. My glazer is pretty durable. I bought it used and it still only dimples on it.

    Hi Thomye, just stumbled across your channel, love it!
    Got a Seaside and was contemplating getting a Glazer or a Twice Baked...I think the Glazer will suit my stance well, the Twice Baked would make more sense in the quiver, replacing my foamie bottom end groveler. Have a Firewire x Pyzel Stubby Bastard and Amigo for better surf. Surfed a Sweet Potato a few years back, which didn't suit me in beach breaks being so flat and placing my back foot too far forward often (think that comes instinctively from snowboarding)...Twice baked looks like it could suit a neutral/front footed stance better, making up in my lack of technique haha!
    Looking forward to what you'll say about the Glazer with it's intended fins and what your take on the Twice Baked is.
    Have a nice weekend :)

      My fins should get here next week. it was supposed to be here but I think it was either stolen or the mailman didn't deliver it. Luckily the store I bought it from sent me another set.
      I am about the buy the twice baked. I thought I had made up my mind about getting the 5'3 but after holding it, it felt too big. Logically, it makes sense to get it big since getting the 5'1 would only improve my literage by only 1 more than the glazer and 1.5 over the seaside. Although the the width helps with plaining and the fact that all 29L is crammed into a board that is 2" shorter. Such a tough decision. Hate spending 800+ and regretting the size. I've done that way too many times. :(

    • @Felix-mr1vs
      @Felix-mr1vs 3 года назад

      @@ThomyeSurfs I can relate to that only too well. Took me 10 years of surfing (irregularly) to find out which volume range suits me. Had everything from 28-38 liters and settled for 30-34 depending on board type. Then every board is different and I bought wrong sizes even after that haha!
      Can't give you any advice, but hope you'll guesstimate the best size for your Twice Baked!
      On a positive note Dan Mann said in one of his videos, that he enjoys riding it in a range of sizes himself. As long as you don't go way out of your range, I think you won't make a big mistake :)

      I have the Seaside, GoFish, and the Glazer all in 5'3". The glazer and the Seaside to me float about the same when paddling. Maybe a Helium vs LFT thing. the GoFish feels like a poly and thinned out. Having said that, the Glazer does not feel too buoyant when surfing because of the Narrower width. Due to the narrower width of center and tail, also the pinnish tail, it is much easier to ride in bigger surf than its cousins. I've surfed the Glazer in 6' waves and a real test for me is backhand. The board held. I could probably have used 3" in length but still held and was easy to set the rails.
      I feel like I should go back and do another review of my smaller boards. the bigger boards have changed how I surf.

A lot of new thai made boards put the leash plug too far forward. • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      man, they are so different. first off, the dom2 is wide point back from center. The glazer is wide point forward from center. even though the dom2 is 3" taller, the wide point is set back and relative to the glazer it is still about 2" to 3" further back. Hope that is making sense. the reason I mention this is that I'm a front foot guy. being so heavy front foot, I'm good at driving down the line but not so good at turns unless the wide point is about 3" in front of my front foot. Having said that, I used to have a 5'6 dom, 5'8 dom, and my brother had a 5'10 dom. I surfed the 5'8 the best because it put the wide point just in front of my front foot. the 5'10 was even better but it got too wide and was counter productive. the thick rails and width of the 5'10 hurt more than the wide point in front of my front foot was helping.
      Anyways, if you are a back footed guy, you might like the dom2 better. if you love the seaside, then I would venture to say you would like the glazer better. without knowing you or not having seen you surf. I would say the Glazer only because you love the seaside. it was, at least for me, a much better board. But remember, tested the dom2 in a 5'4 which was way too short. volume was right but it put the wide point way behind my front foot.

Like more drawn out turns, but want to progress more performance and releases, Thinking of a glazer for the better days, and to offer more performance progression, and using seaside in the fat slow waves. this is a great question. I think I touched on this in my video where I said my glazer was actually the most liters of the three boards. although they are all 5'3, the Glazer was high 28L vs low 28 for my seaside. in your case, 5'8", the Glazer is actually .3L smaller than the seaside. if you took the helium construction into consideration, it is more like 1+ or maybe even 2 liters buoyancy difference. It would be great if they could calculate a buoyancy number along with liters.
      Anyways, getting back to it. 1) already your Seaside is more buoyant than the Glazer at the same size. 2) it is also over 1" wider which means on softer days, it will catch waves easier. Planing speed is often overlooked. Having said that the glazer is actually a flatter board which probably balances out paddling. all things being equal, height and volume, here is my take:
      Padding - equal
      Catching waves - the smallest of edge to the Seaside (much wider) *important consideration though. wider boards catch waves easier but there is a diminishing marginal return. I find that if the board is too wide, my paddling is effected. I get tired faster because my arms are off to the side and not straight up and down. Also, less power when arms are off to the side.
      Performance - Glazer cuz of width. but same diminishing marginal return. The bigger the boards are, the smaller the amount of performance you can draw from them (contingent on skill of course)
      If I were you, i would consider going 1 size smaller. just so you up the performance more. also, when surfing better waves, up to a certain point, waves are easier to catch. it's more about timing.

      Do you think if i went with the same length 5'8 id feel the difference in material? Just consider if i drop in volume slightly to 5'7 id notice alot more the volume difference between that and the 5'8 seaside due to the construction.
      In a 5'8 glazer would i get what im missing and added benefits, compared to the equivalent sized seaside do you think? Or go for a size down!

      @@joshlittle2031 if you went with two 5/8 I think they would paddle roughly the same but catching waves would be a tad easier on softer waves on the seaside. Which is why I said to go smaller since your goal was to be more progressive and for better waves.

The rails on this Glazer seem less sharp and pulled in the back than on my Seaside, which is why a pivot with that tiny break-away at the base of the fin in the back would seem ideal in my head. I got rid of my glazer but after reviewing a lot of my footage, I think I should have kept it. But my situation is somewhat different in that I want to review more boards so I have to keep getting rid of my boards in order to minimize the damage of buying replacements.
      The cool thinks is, my friend who let me ride her 6'2 Hypto Crypto in my last video, she wanted to downsize so after some consideration and consulting with me, she went with a 5'6 Glazer which I think is 32.3L. I think she will be very happy with it and I am hoping she let's me catch a wave or two.
      with that said, is your usual volume already more than what is recommended? for example, my recommended volume for my weight and skill is about 24L. I surf all my boards about 27 to 29. Since my average wave is softer, the extra liters and width helps a lot. So, if i went down 2L, it wouldn't be a big deal but if I were surfing 24L as recommended, going down 2L would not be prudent. So make sure to consider that. :)

    I have both this and the DOM 2 what waves would you say suite each board better? Also was wondering how often you surf snd what training of any do you do when you’re not surfing ?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      there a couple of issues for me in answering this question. First, the Glazer is wide point forward while the Dom2 is wide point back, that's from center in both cases. I like the glazer at 5'3 and on the Dom2 the correct size is 5'4 but because of the wide point back from center, I have to surf it at 5'8 for the board to work for me and feel more natural. Now at 5'8, the board is 30+ liters and 20" wide, effectively turns a hybrid performance board into a groveler in my case. Funny thing, if you the old 5'8 dominator and laid the 5'3 galzer on it, I bet the back half of the board would be very similar. Anyways, cuz of this sizing issue for me, both surf the same types of waves. great is small and punchy and also great in big and soft. as the wave gets bigger, above 4' and steep, the glazer wins because of the volume. Sorry I couldn't answer that better.
      As for how often I surf? I at minimum surf 2 days a week, Saturday and Sunday, a true weekend warrior. But I always surf a minimum of 2.5 hours each session. 3.5 hours if it's good. If I put in OT at work on some days, I try and get it back by going out a 3rd day. this happens maybe once or twice a month and only because of Covid restrictions, working from home. Before that, I only surfed on weekends.
      As for training. Nothing other than surf. I used to mountain bike which was great for my quads but too lazy now. I may start running to bulk my legs up a bit. they are turning into sticks.

    Hi there from Sweden! Excellent review! I have a question regarding size of board. I´m 5.7, 155lbs and 50 years of age and fit. I would say experienced surfer with no problem going top to bottom on a wave. I´v ordered a 5.3 and have been waiting for several weeks. It might not even turn up. The shop only stocks a 5.4. Please advise me of pros and cons of going up to a 5.4. my other two shortboards are a roundtail kream 5.8 and a lost v3 rocket 5.7 both approx 28 liters. I like to surf the glazer as a thruster and a 2+1 set up. Thanks!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      I'm 140lbs these days and I'm on a 5'3 glazer but to be honest, I have thought maybe to try a 5'4. The obvious cons are more nose weight and volume, since it is wide point and volume front from center. but we are talking 1.1 liters throughout the board which is negligible. Proportionally, the 5'4 is actually narrower (this is relatively speaking). If they took a 5'3 Glazer and blew it up proportionally to a 5'4, it should be more like 19.94" wide and no 19.75. so that 1.1 is such a tiny difference.
      The bigger issue might be the height. at 5'4, the board is now 1" shorter than you. I ride this board 5" shorter than me and Machado rides it almost 7" shorter than him. The shorter board is good for flicking it around. If you don't do that already, then that isn't an issue. the board carves nicely so in that case, a longer rail line is better.
      Sorry can't help much more. If it a matter of availability, I think you get what you can. Otherwise when that gets sold, you will be bummed. If it helps, we to have had very little options. But this past week, it looked like all the stores got a huge shipment in. So, maybe the supply chain is increasing.

I hate stepping around alot on shorter boards. Aaarghh, these decisions.. Hopefully I get a notice next week if the ordered 5.3 is on its way or just hanging in the air. How do you rate the the paddling and wave catching of glazer if seaside is a 10? Same volume of course.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      At the same liters, i would say an 8/8.5. Two reason, one, it's not helium so even though the volume is the same, the Seaside is more buoyant. Also, the seaside is wider at the same volume. Width allows a board to plane quicker. it's almost as good. the range is rather hard to determine because we don't know what 1 is on the scale. If you said 1 was paddling a board made out of lead, then the glazer is a 9.9 and seaside is 10. See what I'm saying?

      @@charleshawk6668 it's hard to answer these questions because so many boards out there will work. I think even the dominator at like 6'2 is a good option. I think that board is like 36 or 38 Liters and most of the nose doesn't matter but the rocker helps keep the nose out. The glazer will paddle better cuz of foam in chest and also better for smaller days cuz of width. but at the end of the day, almost any board, at around the same liters will work. I say almost because the board has to be proven. Some boards just don't work at all. but your firewire choices are good to go.

      on account of where i surf, Bolsa, it being mostly small and soft. Not just soft but rather gutless, I would pick the seaside. Im going to view a Glazer today. Important Q. I'm on the seaside now 5'10" at 39liters..wanting to buy the glazer. I'm 5'7" 160lbs..but I like the volume I'm riding with the seaside...catching even mushy waves..or choppy bigger waves. When the waves get steep, fast, pitching a little about head high my seaside is hard to surf..hung up at the top..etc. I got a Crowdkiller 6'10 43liters for the steeper waves and it did work better and I was able to cut back cuz the tail is pulled in and more nimble that I liked alot..BUT..since it was so long (6'10" ) i found myself scooting really far forward on the board to catch the waves and poping up to far forward..didnt like that feeling. I'm going to look at 6'1" Glazer today(used) at 45liters. I know that sounds like alot but when I borrow high liters boards from friends I can drop into bigger faster waves easily..do u think the glazer 6'1" lenght/volume and size for my height/weight will throw off the whole design intent and be really stiff etc. I want to be able to work on my cut backs with the rounded pin tail as opposed to my seaside. What do u think?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      I think there is a lot of room on these boards. Meaning, you can ride them small or big. You will still need scoot back but 6'1 isn't terribly long. Heck, that used to be my standard shorty. But be careful, make sure the tail of a 6'1 glazer isn't the same width as the tail of a 5'10 seaside. Otherwise, it might be just as difficult to turn. Measure you seaside right at the front fin box and do the same with the glazer. I can verify that at least with the five three seaside and the five three glazer the glazer is much more narrow. But if I went up a few inches it's possible it might be the same tail size.

    • @ThomyeSurfs

The 6'1" glazer I got was still aprox 1/2" more narrow than the 5'10" seaside. The 12" up from the tail ended up being almost exactly at the same spot on the lower part of the outside fin boxes on both boards. I'm so digging the glazer! Though my new glazer has almost 5 more liters than my seaside ..I'm already getting some of my best(fist time ) cut backs in. And riding the glazer back side is quite amazing. I've never been good at back side pumping but some how I kinda just wiggled the glazer on a back side wave and it just turned into a pumping carve that kept me up high and beating the lip.
