    The Seiko SRPH75K1 - or the Antarctica Monster Save The Ocean - is overrated. It really is.
    Yes, I know you're paying for the brand and the 'Save The Ocean' credentials and all the rest of it, but just how much is too much for ancillary, abstract concepts like those? Plus, the actual build quality of this watch left A LOT to be desired. It rattled like hell, has an abysmal clasp and the bracelet feels cheap. But that's all just my opinion, of course...

    Just the dial, the case and the indices makes me feel like getting it despite the shortocmings. This will also be my first expensive watch, I know 500$ is not much for most of you all, but for me its an huge amount for money for a watch.

    I really don't understand the negativity and the hate for Seiko...I just bought this watch from an AD for 20% discount from retail price, IMO it's great: case finish is top notch at this price point, accuracy is about 6 seconds per day. On my own alignment is good, I thought the cyclop iwas off but after staring very carefully I noticed it was an optical illusion. Bezel action is also very good and just after checking the alignment for a while I noticed the paint used for the engraved numbers of the bezel is indeed dark blue matching the dial. Yes there is some play in the endlinks, but underneath them my case was polished well. My main complaint is the clasp that IMO is too wide for the watch, I understand previous generations had a slimmer one but complainers complained it looked weird. I also noticed that the notches of the case aligned with the ones on the bezel but the latter should have been a tad wider in order to match their counterpats but here I'm nitipicking. Overall I would recommend this diver to people that are more interested in substance (ISO 6425 tested) than form (0.5mm play in the endlinks). Oh, hardlex is IMO better than the cheap and hazy sapphire you find on the knockoff brands at the same price point, even if it made more sense with the original design without lens because the bezel protected the recessed crystal...I am thinking about removing it to be honest. P.S. It's sad to see this channel recommends to go with AliE because they have a blue tinted sapphire, in the 70s an advertisement stated "just fake people buy fake watches".

      I totally respect your position and am glad you've had a great experience with your Seikos. But I have to say, the sapphire crystals on watches I've experienced and reviewed at £480 (the current RRP of this watch) are not hazy or cheap looking. Likewise, most people paying £480 for a diver likely aren't using it for diving, and if they were, the poor diver's extension would be a disappointment for them. I think a lot of people - and admittedly this is based purely off anecdotal feedback and my own inclinations - would go for a combination of specs AND design/brand heritage at this sort of price point. There are better offerings from Seiko at this price, or just above this price. And let me add I absolutely don't condone fake watches. You imply I do - that's wrong. The Heimdallr homage that many argue is better than the real Monster (but I can't say as I haven't handled it) is not a fake.

    I'm aware of the shortcomings of a Seiko at this price range these days, but I still like the Monster design and I'll buy this for the awesome dial.

      The Monster is not my type but I do like their Samurai,Turtle/Tortoise and Alpinist line. And they do make beautiful dials. I guess the motto of Seiko is there is a watch for everybody (by churning up all different designs at different price points). I used to be a Seiko snob and my collections were all Swiss brands from entry level to high end. Now I realized I am missing out a lot by ignoring Seiko. There will never be a perfect watch even at the Swiss brand higher price point. It's a matter of what you're willing to compromise. I have noticed that people are more critical of Seiko's fault but are forgiving of more expensive Swiss brands fault. Just look at the rehaut of my Rolex and see if it's off by a mm. In the logic of the people complaining with Seiko having misaligned bezel, at the price point of Rolex the rehaut should be 100% aligned. But in reality, only WIS people can notice that when inspected closely. But practically nobody will do that when it's on another person's wrist.

    • @96kyh
      @96kyh Год назад +2

      @@cedricduyongco I agree with your points. For that matter, WIS people are complaining about imperfections on AliExpress watches (homages) that cost from USD 60 - 250; which are otherwise incredible value for the money. Of course these are usually homages, but with outstanding specifications and finishing, considering the low prices..

    Lumey! I've been really falling in love with your videos lately. Also, I kinda had built you up to kinda look like if Johnny Rotten was a Top Gear presenter in 2005, but you instead look quite dashing and really respectable. I don't know if I might be a bit disappointed... Now, about the watch, I think it is obvious that Seiko has become immune to make a 10/10 watch these days, especially divers, but also other styles. I mean, they make great watches and mostly worth their buck, but I think they're currently in a bit of a rut when it comes to certain things other brands seem to master with little to no problems.
    A few weeks ago I was looking at a Presage model, I liked it a lot, but there were some minute details that made me shy away a bit. For me it was the hands, that watch model would have been a solid 9/10 if they had gone for some coffin shaped hands like they do on the GS. All in all, I kinda felt there were better options out there that was more appealing for the money. Then I had a look at a Orient Bambino and I just fell head over heels for that little rascal. I was really close to pulling the trigger on it, but I already have a Seestern 600T homage on the way (thanks to you), and now I am about to order another watch which will kinda serve the purpose of any Presage or Bambino. It's the Selten 00.00 with a meteorite dial. That's a watch I think you should try and get for your channel, not many reviews on RUclips for it, and the guy who makes them is a really nice and helpful guy, and the watch looks quite nice, although I will admit it is not a 10/10, but I felt it was unique enough to get my hands on.
    Good health to you, sir.
    Cheers.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  Год назад +1

      That's probably the most unlikely comparison I've ever had but I'll take it! Also, dashing and respectable aren't adjectives I've ever associated with myself so thanks so much for saying so 🤣
      There's a fair few pieces mentioned there. Some of the Presage models look great (the Cocktail Time ones, to be specific), but I think the lack of a sapphire crystal on the models I like has put me off. It's a little thing but I'm a right clumsy bast**d, so that Hardlex would look like a used vinyl in no time. As for the Bambino, it's another I'd like to try. Maybe I should and just upgrade the crystals on both. It's just an expense I resent having to do having already paid for the watch.
      I think you'll be made up with the Seestern, but do let me know your thoughts. I'm buying another one of them. They're just fantastic value for money IMO. Not sure even San Martin gets close to them, really - at least at that price. The San Martins at £200-£350 ovbiously do, but for about £140, Seestern is the GOAT.
      I know the Selten watch you're talking about! It's a beautiful piece and one I'd love to review. They actually offered me a small discount on the piece but I couldn't get one at the time. Maybe one will come into my possession in future if I keep my ear* to the ground**.

Wearing it today just got them few hours ago😂 with stickers and all from a very unhappy wife. Great size. Great color and my first special edition. Happy feet monster penguin doesnt sound correct but they look really cool as antarctica. Same size with my kamasu but with same dial with my king samurai and bezel action is seiko as it is quite not perfectly aligned but better clicks than my sumo hulk. Lumes is same as seiko samurai. Its my most loved piece so far. I will be checking if an SKX 007 will give same feeling of satisfaction after I will get it few days from now. But this one is cooler than what I currently have. I just ordered a SD1970 Captain Willard on the 11-11 sale and was thinking this black friday to get the heimdallr with the same dial and saw someone selling this. What a bargain . Better than buying something homagjng it. Perfect size for my wrist so far.

    Wow I do like the styling of the Monster, but I have to agree with you that in this price range you have a sapphire crystal. Dust inside the case of a 500-dollar watch is unacceptable. And I don't like the idea of all the crap collecting around the bezel. I think they made a decision at the top to pocket the money they save by giving their customer less quality hence no sapphire in many of their mid-price so-called better-quality watches. That said most of my Seiko's are still looking great even with Hardlex Crystal, Mineral instead of sapphire. There are always pro's and con's, I like Seiko and I do wish they would start using Sapphire in more of their mid-range choices. Orient Triton has sapphire Crystal and they do it at a price point below 300 dollars and great accuracy, the but on the Triton though is I am sure it is no ISO certified for diving and that does cost! And hey I am no professional, but I do like my watches and I have them ranging from an Omega Planet Ocean to an Invicta Pro diver, everyone needs a beater watch. LOL!

I have to say I agree this bracelet is a bit of a waste of space, it just doesn’t match the case and dial. The diver extensions generally are just a load of nonsense for 99% of users, they just look like a cheap afterthought to tick a box. Couldn't agree more mate! My best guessing is Seiko see their sub-500-$ watches as entry drug. They figure they would sell enough of their more expensive models if their cheaper models already had decent specs like sapphire crystal and milled clasp elements. But once you spend more than a certain amount Seiko watches can be amazing.

      Of that there's no doubt, bud. I had a King Samurai a year or so ago that I loved... But it was still misaligned, and that cost me nearly £550. And I think I remember Jody at JOMW getting a Seiko for about a grand that was STILL misaligned. Now, for that, I'd be livid. But I don't want to spend Grand Seiko money for something as basic as an aligned bezel. Maybe something more simple and dressy (like a Cocktail model) might be an easier sell to someone like me. But then again, Hardlex... 🤣

    A bit of a harsh review...even though I tend to agree (generally) with your points. Full discloser: I have three Seiko Monsters (including the model featured in this review) and I have two Heimdallr "monsters" as well (an orange dial and a really cool green dial). While it's true, spec-wise, these homage watches (fake-o's) are superior to the real deals (again, by specs) and the prices are WAY cheapter, I must confess that the sum of the parts doesn't necessarily trump the whole, if that makes sense. In other words, I'd rather have the real thing, short comings or not. The finishing on the real Seikos I've found to be superior and then there's the grating, nagging little voice that bugs my horological OCD: you're wearing a fake!

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  Год назад

      That's a really good point, mate - no doubt, there's a magic to certain brands and pieces, and that goes for this too. I think sometimes when you're trying to review stuff, it can be difficult not to let it boil down to hard facts, but then something will happen when those facts come into play. In this case, the Hardlex got scratched and I wasn't even sure how, and I think that's something that would really annoy me (and it did!). Seiko perhaps are riding the wave of goodwill because their watches have that certain magic that their history and designs hve afforded them, but that'll only go so far. If they could have better QC (alignment issues, etc) and ramp up specs the way they've ramped up prices, it'd be better for us all :)

    If you buy the Seiko, only what you pay for is a different case design. Movement is mostly the same with some examples but is still same. So if you like Monster design, is only someone choice. I got Monster, Samurai, Presage, and 5. Every one is different and I like it, someone else doesn't need like it. if you don't like this type of crystal, is easy to replace with Sapphire - flat or not. Can't see the sense of this video.

    I have the 4th gen blue dial black bezel. The bracelet had to come right off straight away, not because of the reasons stated in this video, but because the clasp is too long and hard to balance out. Pressed steel clasps (when was the last time you broke one of those) are my preference over that heavy thick, and unnecessary milled s**t. Dirt under the crystal, that would send me nuts. Seiko is so behind in QC, I don't understand how that can get so bad. They need to sort that right out. Sapphire is weaker than hardlex and that's a well know fact, remember this is a dive watch where dependability is paramount. I do appreciate sapphire on my dress watches though. Rubber strap installed right away, (needed it for my diving anyway) and that rubbish bracelet never saw daylight.
