Thanks for the overview! I'm a video guy, and since you almost sort of asked for input: Camera setup is fine - just a little overexposed this time (too bright). I noticed that autofocus was a little slow to track. If that can be sped up then it works well. The 'macro' shots are great! The position of the watch in relation to the overhead lights could be adjusted to reduce the glare on the crystal (move your workspace if the lights can't be moved). As for the background, the wood works fine in my book. You could always slap a big ol Long Island Watch branded desk pad on the table.
Thank you - it's a prime 35mm lens (macro). I guess the AF speed is a function of the camera? (EOS R). I did notice the AF takes a while. Lighting I do need to play with and will. When it's over exposed, how do you recommend I rectify? Turn down the ISO? Close the aperture a bit? Or screw with shutter? Here's where I am - F16, ISO 4000, 1/60 shutter speed. Feel free to email us to continue to convo if easier.
@@islandwatch If the depth of field is where you want it, then turn the ISO down to a lower setting. 4000 is very high. You could bump it way down and likely open up your aperture (to a 'lower' f number') but I don't shoot macro lenses so I'm not sure of all the implications. Typically this would cause more background blur. Shutter speed is fine and will probably remain 1/60 for everything you do. I did a quick search of your camera and adjusting autofocus speed and found this: 1. Change to (or make sure that you are in) Video Mode 2. Menu: AF, item 3, second row "Movie Servo AF speed" Speed can be set (to various degrees of slowness) in one-point AF. This is available only when a "lens compatible with slow AF adjustment" is used, otherwise AF speed will fall back to "normal".
Well done Mark for diving into a new camera set up. Yes, hopefully you’ve been able to play around with the AF settings. There are SO many AF parameters to play with now, it’s a bit complicated.🤪 As you’re in the US, I’d keep the shutter speed at 1/60 (NTSC). Exposure was a bit hot (bright). I agree, I’d turn the ISO down (colours and definition would become a tad better too). Or perhaps the lighting could be turned down a little- they don’t need to be on full blast (if they are). Or, you could keep the light intensity level the same, but use some diffusion on the lights to soften the light a little. This will lower the light level a bit, so you may not need to adjust exposure settings that much. Mirrorless/Dslr camera’s do need a bit of light for the AF to behave properly. So it’s down to some trial and error in your ‘spare time’ to see what works best with your set up. And perhaps a darker background to make the watches pop more (and then a lighter background for the dark PVD watches).😅 Congrats though. Love your channel .
Marc, after I saw your Instagram post , I knew I have to see it in person. I went to the Amsterdam Seiko Boutique during my holiday to see it person and booooy, was I in love. Immediately bought it, and cannot stop looking at this dial. I have the feeling, every time I stare at it, I can see different colors. Yes, the watch is not perfect, and some things could be made better by Seiko, but this dial makes everything else irrelevant in my opinion. I haven't seen such dial even in watches that cost 4-5 times as much, as this one.
Since you asked, I suggest a darker background, maybe a dark mahogany, walnut, rosewood, or even ebony back ground to give the white gloves and watches more contrast. I think the maple background makes everything too light, much darker would give better contrast, definition, and bring the eyes more in focus to the watch and really make it pop. Thanks for the videos.
Nice looking watches! I think the "view" in the dial artwork is actually looking up (from underwater) at the penguins swimming in silhouette under the blue-green Antarctic ice. Pity they wouldn't spring for sapphire crystals on their "special edition" watches...
The new camera and lighting look great! Captures the detail of the dial amazingly. If you're trying to do an upscale look, maybe a darker wood as the background? Looks great tho
Love the baby Tuna! Maybe a dark blue or black background would make the watches pop more and not distract from them? Thanks Marc and have a great day! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Recently picked up the mini tuna and just want to let future buyers know that the watch is definitely a shade of green /blue green. It's so hard to get a photo to match the color of the dial to my eye. It's a deep teal (if that's a thing?).
Enjoyed the review 👌 Nice dials on both 👍 Over the years I preferred the Baby Tuna over the Monster. In this case, I prefer the Monster. I don't know what was going through Seiko's mind but, that is NOT a Baby Tuna (reference the 46.5mm SRP637). At first glance, it reminds me of the old Seiko 5 Bottle Caps.
I tried this baby tuna onto my 7 & 1/4 inch wrist and it wears like a 38 mm and just looks too small. I agree with you that Seiko should have kept the 46.5 mm design that SRP637 had as it maintained a nicer presence on the wrist, similar to the Monster. So it looks like I will have to go with the Monster I want to enjoy this new dial.
A Black background works best for showcasing jewelry, but I always thought the all white worked just as well in your videos. Either way keep these great vids coming, even with a purple with yellow Poka dot background.
You should consider a full frame mirror camera to shoot your videos mark. There will be no hunting for focus hence giving you clear shots at all angles and during match presentations. Love the content and knowledge 🫡
A black velvet or matte black background would help a lot, both from making the watches pop, and making it easier to get your exposure and white balance right, It'll also make your autofocus much easier. Even something like a board painted with Black 2.0 or vantablack would make the watch and your hands the absolute sole focus of your video
If you have a camera you can change lenses on, B&H shows "minimum focusing distance" on the "specs" section of lenses for sale. Or you can frame things farther away, and if you shoot in 4k you can crop the video to 1080p whenever you want. Very useful. Otherwise I think it looks good!
I've wanted a Seiko Tuna for a long time now and like the one in this video. Would it be possible to switch the rubber bracelet with a stainless steel one?
Right away could tell you had a new camera. These are really cool watches. Love the penguins! 🐧 As always your Pappy's watch looks fantastic on you! My favorite in your collection. 🙂🐶
Love the new background Mark! It's hard to describe, but I think the light reflections off of polished cases/bracelets in combination with the white background would sometimes make my brain hurt. Not enough to stop watching of course, always love the videos!
Green watchmaker mat. Ya know what would be cool? Different lighting schemes, showing what the watches look like under sunlight equivalent, and warm white fluorescents, and cool white fluorescents, and standard 3000K-3500K interior lighting, etc.
Great looking watches Marc! I have that same Monster in the Yellow Monster version. I might go for that baby tuna! Does it have the same 6R36 movement? So glad they drilled the lugs. Nice job Seiko! New camera setup is great! A dark gray or blue background would add contrast and highlight the watches.
Hello and thank you for bringing to us this absolutely beautiful pieces. Those dials are awesome! And yes, I can confirm that the image quality is awesome too! Thank you! Saludos!!
Also, you might want to try black gloves with lighter colored watches, white is ok with black watches but dark gloves and dark background is a better visual image that would add balance and make the watches pop more I think.
Love the videos, especialy when a Seiko is the topic. I must say that I'm a new colector and a Seiko fan boy. Anyway, maybe this goes to the over exposure issue, but my thought is that if your reviewing a light colored watch, wear dark gloves, and dark colored watches get the white gloves. just a thought.
Whenever I take pictures of a watch to sell I place it on an old light blue Persian rug from my grandparents. Looks great every time and keeps the watches from getting scratched
New camera definitely better. As to the background, I suggest midnight blue. Whatever color you use for the background, it needs to be non-reflective. As for the watches, the dials are great, but I'm just not a monster kinda guy!
Love those Seiko ! Wish in Europe they cost less ! The studio uhnmmm better aske TGV 😎 , just joking Marc , try to make a few test with the camera plus light’s . light a bit too much not a pro ! But a bit less light maybe you go pro ! 😎👍
Wouldn’t a black felt make a better background? The dark background would high contrast the edges of most watches, it wouldn’t work with black cases but most watch cases aren’t PVD coated. Felt would not reflect glare either. BTW, I'm not a camera or photo expert, so I could be wrong, but it makes sense. Also, a lot of people are using turntables for closeups.
Hi Mark, thanks for the entertaining video although you didn't mean to. I always like it when videos aren't absolutely perfect because it ads a human touch. As others have already said, the video is a bit too bright but it looks as if you have better depth now. Is that a macro lens? Anyway, nice penguin watches. Waiting for a 'Save the desert' series now with antilopes or scorpions on the dial...
Mark love the videos…but I own this watch and under no lighting condition is it green. It’s blue under most lighting and maybe teal in direct sunlight but not green… lol oh no I hope I don’t cause another what colour is this dress debate ;)
The filter makes the dial look dark blue, on my phone screen. The watches look very nice. $200 less would make them compelling choices, price seems high. But that's current Seiko. Camera seems high quality. How about a black background for light watches and a white one for dark? Hardly original, I know. Maybe a dark neoprene pad for light watches?
I love that dial. I miss the old lugs on the monsters though. The baby tuna is phenomenal. I wish they’d make a standard tuna STO with that dial. I still may have to grab this one though 🤔
Wow that dial looks so nice. Since I got the baby tuna already I might have to get the monster....I just wish seiko made them with sapphire as a standard...
The woodgrain background is OK, but I'm not yet sold on the camera setup here. The image is a bit overexposed (gloves) and glare-y on the watches, but that might just be the lighting setup. Nice Seikos!
Save the ocean series never disappoint, amazing dials. As for background matte white or even better 14% grey matte (easier to white balance, colour correct) or maybe matte black so watches "pop"?
Great watches that are unique. As far as the setup goes I am no expert but little overexposed (too bright) especially with the background being so light. The steel casing got lost a bit sometimes against the background due to the brightness. Appreciate the effort you have to put in to do these videos, keep it up.
Does anyone know which of the two are better for the money? I like both designs and usually wear on a nato, so I don't care about default straps. I'm curious which is better for the money
Love the monster. I actually dont like the brightness of the new camera. It seems clearer but a little to bright. Also it was out of focus a couple times. As a background, maybe try a carbon fiber mat
Very cool watches Marc. We need an Islander Save The Ocean 🌊🌊🌊🐧👍👍👍👊👊Islander artwork background for sure. So many talented people love your brand sure someone would come up with a cool one. Maybe make video on it, winner gets a few Islander Watches for their artwork👊 New camera is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tried on the monster today. The case and face are lovely…the straps are terrible. I couldn’t believe how cheap it felt. Tried a samurai too and had a nasty bracelet too. Put me off buying it.

Seiko makes the best dials, the attention to detail is amazing.
True!
2 year old video! And I did it see it back then. Bought the SRPH77 few months ago. Great piece! Thanks Mark for the review.
I think this is the monster I’ve been waiting for. Has a jade monster vibe with the bonus of penguins.
Just got the Baby Tuna version for my birthday last week. love it and wearing it now.
Man this piece is absolutely gorgeous!
Wonderful video as always marc and you are never to old to enjoy the cuteness of Penguins 🐧 lol 😂

Okay, thank you.
I started with Seiko in the early 90's and left them, and now am crawling back based on the newer Monsters and Samurais.
They are addictive.
Those watches are beautiful! I'd definitely have one if it was only slightly smaller. My upper limit is 41mm.
Close-ups look great, really notice the upgrade. Didn't realize the dial looked that good. Further out it seems the light washes out the watch.
Nice looking watches! I think the "view" in the dial artwork is actually looking up (from underwater) at the penguins swimming in silhouette under the blue-green Antarctic ice.

Never gonna happen!
@@islandwatch of course it won’t. Just dreaming 😂

Seiko trips in other areas but damn are those dials good.

I noticed the dial on the Monster in this video says Made in Japan but the ones you are selling on your store do not.
For the background maybe a long island logo's on a glow and the dark rubber mat.
Cool, thanks!
I'd like to see one with an aftermarket blue sapphire.
I didn’t like how they looked in pictures, but in the video they actually look really nice!

Cannon EOS R and 35mm macro lens
Good review. Again Seiko releasing very fun but very serious tool watches. Video background is a little too bright.
Love the monster. I actually dont like the brightness of the new camera. It seems clearer but a little to bright. Also it was out of focus a couple times. As a background, maybe try a carbon fiber mat
Okay, thank you.
