    Matt, I've concluded the stirring direction in the aluminum magnet solution is critical. I stirred counterclockwise, for a little to long. When ready to boast the attractiveness to my friends, the pop can repelled so hard I put a hole in the drywall in my garage. Not to be messed with by amatuers. Also noted - on my adjustable wrech, closing it completely for 3 seconds will recalibrate it to SAE and vise versa. No longer need two adjustable wrenches. Thank for the video. I don't need a sky hook, but ill put one in anyway. The for posting.

    • @NextLevelCarpentry

      Dear Greg, I have posted your comment for all viewers to see first for the insightful imperial to metric conversion process for an adjustable wrench. That, my friend, is pure genius! A little known fact is that I've kept six crescent wrenches in the drawer of my tool box so that I can have a small medium and large in both SAE and Metric. You're incredible solution allows me to free up that extra drawer space so now I have places for my selection aluminum magnets plus I can also add my collection of brass magnets as well.
      I can't thank you enough for sharing here at Next Level Carpentry because it makes the whole Channel a better place!

    Being the "Crane Guy" for 44 years, I watched with great interest! You did a splendid job on ALL aspects. I do agree with a previous comment about Chip. It would have been nice if HE would have held the eye bolt while you threaded the nuts and washers on.
    Agreed, a welded eye, eye bolt would increase the safety margin but not necessary IF you abide by the hoisting limits you set. As a "crane guy" I would recommend using a shackle on the eye instead of doubling your strap as you did. While I sure understand the safety margins between the strap rating and your load limit making it perfectly safe, a shackle would prevent any potential damage to the strap due to unequal load on the strap fibers going through the eye. As I said, with the ratings of the equipment and the load limits you set, hoisting will be perfectly safe. You have my seal of approval!
    Great video and extremely well done. I enjoy all of your videos and the way you present them.
    THANK YOU and Chip.

      Thanks so much for your insightful comment... much appreciated!
      This kind of polite, informed feedback is educational for me and beneficial to any other viewer who takes the time to read through it. I kinda thought the steel hook in the round 'eye' of the strap was less than ideal because of the sharp load point in a smooth circle... any thoughts there? Seems like the strength of that ring might be the proverbial weak link in the straps design without a suitable fitting to connect to it.
      Regardless, thanks for your contribution!
      Best, Matt

    • @strrchristmas
      @strrchristmas 2 года назад +3

      @@NextLevelCarpentry Matt, Thank you for your delightful reply. I sure understand your concern. If that strap has a 5,000lb rating, you can be SURE that ring will hold 5,000lb. Being a ring, a person should only use a piece if hardware such as a hook or shackle. Both of them will be a point load. So, you are good to go especially since you have a 10 to 1 safety margin restricted load rating.
      Keep making the great videos and Good Luck, Terry

    Thank you for talking about the safety factors on such a design, I'd like to point out something not mentioned, the come along is more suited to pulling jobs instead of lifting jobs. For lifting it is preferred to use a chainfall to make easier lifting and lowering work. Personally I'd lean towards a welded eye or an actual lifting eyebolt since there is a possibility of opening but by limiting the lifting capacity it likely wouldn't be an issue....

In order for me to be able to get back in the shop again, one of the things that is required is some sort of skyhook or sliding crane 🏗 system in my shop. Of course I will go with an electric system.

    As an armchair engineer (semi-retired mechanical engineer), I think you did a splendid job on the skyhook support structure. All aspects of the installation were well thought-out and properly planned. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to take the correct size combination wrenches to the job-site to make it easier to tighten those bolts in tight quarters. Of course, those are big wrenches that don't usually come in the a typical set, so most people don't have them handy.

    Yet another great video! I’ve recently subscribed to your channel and I got already so many great ideas from your content. I really like your creative solutions to otherwise head-scratching problems. And if I believe that deflection gauge, im pretty sure that skyhook is rated for more than 500 pounds and you are just being cautious hehe. The one thing I would do differently though, would be to flip the wooden guide block around and trap the eye bolt between it and the beam, that way if the weight shifts, it protects the drywall from getting mangled in any directions as well as moving the load even closer to the beam. And lose the bottom jam nut to allow the hook to rotate. But to each their own and I’m pretty sure that you know better your applications. Thanks for the upload and the awesome content you provide. Now keep us posted on how are the board stretcher AKA “oopsie b’gone” lol and that aluminum magnet coming along :p

    Hehe! Aluminium magnets with sparkle! Nice try. The hook on the chain hoist would need a safety clip in Germany at least.
    I wonder what would happen if you made the hole in the ceiling too large. Then the skyhook wouldn't stick and fall out. Would you use a piece of double tape to stick the lower nut to the wooden guideblock? Which would make it possible to turn the skyhook from below to make it remain in the ceiling without a second man.

    • @charlesemmer8856
      @charlesemmer8856 2 года назад

      Aanother possibility would be to attach a strong magnet to the top of the guide block. Then you could push the eyebolt up through the hole (with the washer tape backing removed) until it makes contact with the magnet.

    Yeah, it'll hold your 500lbs, something to keep in mind is that trusses are designed to carry the load from the top chord and while every homeowner stores junk across the bottom chords, I've seen it cause problems. First indication is drywall seams cracking. A simple solution is to add a 2x4 from the bottom chord straight up to the top chord where you've placed your channel. Now you've added load to the primary chord designed to carry it. It's overkill, but you'll stretch your limits with any planned load limits. I've been building and remodeling for 4 decades, so not a troll and don't spent much time justifying as I do clarifying.. I understand liabilities as well. I also understand the principal of how trusses are designed. Would I add a support from bottom chord to top chord? Probably not for short term loads, but I'd certainly bring up the reason trusses are designed the way they are and why you have a girder truss.

    What is screw jacking (9:45)?

    • @NextLevelCarpentry
      @NextLevelCarpentry  2 года назад

      There's probably a better explanation out there somewhere but basically screw jacking is the tendency when driving a screw that the threads actually push the two pieces apart rather than pulling them tightly together as the screw is driven home.
      If you watch real closely during that sequence you'll see the little block move away from the truss until I back to screw out and drive it a second time when we driving it holds the piece tight and fastens it tight. Reversing the screw and redriving it is a quick way to deal with screw jacking but it can also be avoided by drilling a properly sized pilot hole in the piece being attached which prevents the threads from pushing back and causing a loose fit of the piece. Another way to avoid it is to clamp the two pieces together before driving a screw so that the force of the clamp overcomes the tendency for screw jacking to push the piece away and you can just drive the screw once for a tight fit. Because of cramped conditions in the attic I chose the drive redrive method because I'm kind of lazy that way but other times I'll use alternative methods to prevent it but the goal is always to have a tight strong fit between the pieces being attached. Whew! 😎

      @michaelmcgreevy4033 2 года назад

      @@NextLevelCarpentry OK, I did know about screw jacking, just not by that name, and I wasn't sure if it was the same thing. As I understand it, the problem is that for a tight join you need the spiral path cut out by the thread to continue perfectly from one piece of wood to the other. So if the thread's exit from one piece of wood does not line up with the thread entry into the other piece of wood, you will have a gap. And since the thread's path through the wood is created before the joint is tight, it's basically guaranteed that they won't line up (the thread turns a bit between exiting one piece of wood and entering the other). By drilling (in the piece being attached) a pilot hole which is wide enough to accomodate the thread (but not the head), this issue is avoided. I still don't understand, though, how backing the screw out and retightening it addresses the issue, since I don't think it would change the thread's path though either piece. I tried it out and it didn't work for me, but maybe there's something special about how you're doing it that I'm missing. Sorry for the delay in replying -- I needed a chance to try out your technique for myself.
