Tool Tuesday Ep. 9: Sky Hook Mobile Cart
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 ноя 2023
- We added another Sky Hook to the shop, this time in the form of a mobile cart. This will provide some heavy lifting assistance anywhere in the shop that's portable and simple to use. The cart allows tools or workpieces to be lifted and taken directly to the machine when needed.

You need a second Skyhook cart to lift the first Skyhook when you want to transfer it to the pedestal mount. 😀
😅
LoL 😂 👍
No pricing on the website , means it’s to expensive
buy a cherry picker from HF and save a bunch of money
@@mhughes1160 I found one site that gives a $3900 price tag for the cart like Adam has.
😂😂
Abom: I've gotten older. Mrpete: Hold my coffee.
No really, hold my coffee? I have arthritis
@@pastaalalamborghiniI've had it since I was 30 maybe earlier but it was diagnose at 30. 😂
when was the last time you saw mr pete pick up a 150lb part?
@@katelightsHe picks himself up out of bed every morning 😂
Mr. Pete built his own "Tubal Crane". Same exact thing.
Can't wait till next Tuesday's video, "Making a height extender for the cantilever arm" or "I've decided to squat the back of my truck".
Or use the forklift
Geeez I don't know what would give me more strain. Paying 7k for a cart or lifting something moderately heavy
If you have a shop do it for 500 it's great but definitely too expensive
Yeah, it's pricey. For that kind of money, I'd have to really consider getting one of those antique rolling hoists with the cast-iron bodies. At least it'd look fantastic when you're not using it.
I’d have one if donated. $7k really?
Its all free to him, wonder if he will ever use those tools or just be a salesman for the company ?
Good machinists can make lots of money. Believe it or not. A decent overhead crane is much more expensive to have installed.
Good machinists don't work cheap. I've known some very wealthy machine shop families.
That Skyhook is a very versatile tool a real back saver the older you get the more you'll appreciate it.
The only tweak to that particular Skyhook design (unknown if already an option) is an option to remove/foldaway the handle and use a battery powered drill (similar to speed ratchet binders) to wind the chain up (& down)
And
A hook on the trolley to restrain the hook in place when not in use (save it swinging around and KTFOing the operator during moving
............G'day Neil,
you're not wrong brother. I'm 81 and still fixin' motorcycles; Thinkin' about changing my gearbox in the Legend#7 (illustrated).
Cheers,
Malcolm.
That floor pedestal looks like it would be pretty easy to make. You could weld up a couple more and just leave them installed. Maybe some places you might want it taller or shorter even.
I don't get it. How many times a day do you have to pick something up from the floor at exactly the point where you have a pedestal? And lift it to only the height of a meter or something?
@@Peter_Riis_DK Doesn't have to be off the floor. Maybe you just want to take it out of a machine and set it on a cart. Or vice versa.
@@josephcote6120
You might be right.
Btw. why do you have a triode as your channel icon?
@@Peter_Riis_DKobviously your not a job shop or a machinist, as he said he's not young anymore which most will relate to. What I don't understand is why he hasn't built his own, it's not rocket science, in my shop I have built my own in various different ways and when picking up funny shape parts that sit on jigs it's been a game changer even my customer said can I make them one, I said no because they would want a cert to go with it because the people they employ at times wins the Darwin award for why they shouldn't reproduce 🤭.
@@ricardo-iw9sq
Nope. I'm more of a Jack of all trades. Thanks for the story. 😊
How much granite will it lift? Make sure you wipe it off first! Make sure it's clean, then wipe it off again.
Adam, mount the pedestal in the back of the truck. Then set the skyhook on it, when you are moving heavy stuff from point to point. Maybe use wing nuts to hold it down.
I will Laugh Out Loud when Adam Booth uses Wing Nus for anything!
Look in Adam's archive from a year or two ago. He did a build series converting a Harbor Freight type engine hoist to a truck mounted version. Building a custom mount, bushings, connectors and everything needed to mount it on his truck. Making the whole thing quick attach/detach for storage. It was a good series with lots of lathe work, milling and welding.
yes, I do remember that now. @@dennythomas8887
@@dennythomas8887 Yes, but he never did show the 'contentious wiggling of the pin' on its standing leg.
I'm a little disappointed that the cart doesn't have a shelf or drawer under the top to store rigging slings, screw eyes and shackles.
"Request a quote". That right there means I can't afford it.
I wouldn't be so quick to blame the truckers, Adam. I think the shipper could have done a better job with the crates. I have shipped ( and received ) a lot heavy things, over the years. These are valuable items, and worth making the effort to crate properly.
you're right, the factory could use metal banding straps to bundle the counterweights more tightly, thats my suggestion
It's not the truckers, it's the squirrels they have running forklifts in the warehouse! I have two forklift certs and the things I've seen these kids do make me cringe! Full throttle all the time, swinging around corners without looking or slowing down, running into things. Got an ~80-gallon air tank one time returned to us as "Defective". It had a hole in it exactly the size and shape of a forklift tine! Nope, not our problem...
Well, a 2000lbs electric pallet stacker lifting to ~five or six feet is worth its weight in gold. Move, lift, load or use as a work table. That or a overhead/gantry crane, we have (and use) both...
Hi from Canada, you not old, friend. You are wiser, work smarter, not harder
Skyhook been around a for many years. I found on at a shipyard and asked the Foreman if it was something i could use. He gifted it to me and i stripped it down and cleaned it. I was very happy and put a plaint job on it. I was able to work on heavy parts on the work bench to work them.
Consider adding a spinner handle on top of each outrigger screw to speed setting up and release of the feet
Those counterweights looks like the ones on the front of some tractors.
I need one about 3 times that size for loading logs on the trailer.
Your delivery guy isn’t at fault for inadequate packaging 😉
Very nice addition to your shop. Anytime you can work safe and avoid injuries its a win. 👍
Very nice setup. Bet it costs an arm and a leg plus your third member. Looks quality.
A mini crane for the workshop! I love it! 😅
The bolt down stand would be great, you could build a table top or a vice mount that your could slip into the stand for other purposes when not in use by the Sky Hook.
Thanks for showing us that.. I need this setup at work. Like you said, we aren't young anymore, so I need this for some heavy work I do at work too
I really like this new format tools Tuesday. Shame on skyhook for not knowing how to pack. That all should’ve been on one pallet. And a lot more blocking. Anytime you ship a short pallet someone’s going to put a load on top of it.
Its likely for cost efficiency and loading safety. - avoiding combining the weight of both sets of items would often result in more fractured pallets in shipping
Oh yes another awesome video! keep these up Adam!
Nice addition for your shop and a back saver.
Of all the accessories he's got, I totally support this. This should have been a priority.
Thanks for sharing the sky hook
When we were young bucks, picking up heavy crap was a sense of pride. We pay for it later.
That cart/crane is a silent hero.
I love that cart and sky hook.
that thing is awesome!!! and, it will make life so much easier on your back!! ...safety FIRST!!
Sky hook? Been looking fèr one o dem for decades and now you bring it out, thanks alot, made me look like I been horns woggled into thinkin' they wasn't real.
looks like you'll need to make a modification to the cart to extend the height of the post so it can clear the tailgate.Good thing you have the skills to make it happen
I absolutely love that cooling fan in the background. Wanna see that going full tilt.
What a great little shop cart, with the cantilever and outriggers, epic mini crane👍👌🇦🇺once your back goes away....it ain't comin' home happy no more
Great addition to the new shop Adom. Saving your back is always job one!
Nice tool great idea!
Very handy for the shop.
nice setup ! i use a hoyer patient lift.. lifts 400 lbs.. always for sale used
And patient lifts are vetted by lawyers, so youk now they're not going to drop anything. I guarantee you, every lift Hoyer makes has had lawyers go over it from every possible angle. They probably test the paint in case a patient eats it. And you can get a new Hoyer lift for under $700. Used, you can hope for $100.
wow 4000 dollars. you could get a engine hoist and modify it for a lot less
I love the tractor style counter weights.
Looks like a real back saver!
A lot of merchandise. And we love it.
Thats a pretty sweet cart. I feel like for liability reasons alone, every shop needs one of these
Nice toy. Use it well. It’s a back saver. 😊
Looks like a well thought out piece of equipment. Had to watch as was concerned about stability, but the counterweights and the lateral stabilisers make it a good useful addition to the shop. Anything that helps you to not damage yourself is good. Mart in England.
I see a small modification to get the cantilever over the truck bed. But, bottom line: Good on you for taking care to prevent injury to your back. You get one back, once it goes, its gone.
Looks like a candidate for making useful.
Why buy all those weights when buying batteries would weigh as much?
Why does'nt it have a remote control (keyfob) servo motor instead of that skyhook plastic handle?
Having 2 hands free when lifting loads with 1 finger press is useful.
A 4 channel remote & another serrvo motor could allow forward reverse system travel.
Or jib rotations.
Keeping the skyhook same height but cutting a couple of inches out of the legs would make the upper surface the same height as the saw, always useful to have extended sawbed.
you mean use car batteries for lead weights? im gonna assume a functional battery device cost is wayyyy more expensive than some raw chunks of iron
Great tool. Well done video. Skyhook should see a few sales. We get to see new stuff. You get to save your back. Everybody wins.
Im lovin new tool tuesday brother
Great peace of kit Adam. For me something like that would remove the dread of doing certain tasks that sometimes linger.
A 6 Inc riser under the cantilever would help with the tailgate issue. One improvement would be to have the outriggers one piece and pivot out from the side. Other than that it looks like it's a back saver.
and maybe incorporate a thrust bearing to help with swiveling?
Best part of this tool is that it's free, for a little time
Older and know the feeling !!! Have had to give a lot more thought to what just bull around
I'm 45 and Im sitting here recovering from a sprained back from loading 5 60lb bags of ready mix from home Depot. I'm coming up on 1 week of soreness and immobility. That thing is worth every penny if it saves your back. Don't wait until you hurt yourself.
Those spare levelling pads you made for the lathe could be used under the outrigger adjusting screws. Would make the screws more stable and save having to wind them in and out too much when moving the trolley around. Even store them on the base of the trolley for more weight.
Thx for sharing Adam, now us under budgeted hobbyist have a new Toy to copy their design into a shop made lift,,,hehe! My welding table built back 2 + yrs ago, has slide out out riggers, a 2ton HF boom, but will this a great addition to your shop. Now you will have a band-aid to show off this Thanksgiving from the assemble,,,,hehe! Banding straps are sneaky, and get us every time 😞. Bear.
Pretty slick.
Thanks for sharing
I'll say it again, i have no doubt you could build a better "sky hook" and make great content at the same time
Mr. Pete (tubalcain) made one. He called it the Tubal-Crane
@@SpakasAlbert I can't disagree with that but I don't watch this channel to see advertising, I watch it for the machining and problem solving. He used to do projects and builds all the time but doesn't much anymore
@@woowzerswell he is running a business......
@@andrewstoll4548 pretty sure making content is a business as well, and if you can make a better product and promote yourself.......
That is what I was thinking I was actually thinking what is the difference between metalwork and machining... I really wish abom did more like swamplamp or inheritance machining
Dream shop! Mucho money 💰
Awesome man. Anything you can do to save your back, back problems are the worst. Little more than i can justify spending for puttering around my garage, but quality tools cost money! Im jealous. 😁
That section of steel round bar at 150 lbs weighs more than most mini lathes complete let that sink in when considering rigidity in machine tools weight means rigidity and better machining and finish to what you are machining.
You need a Skyhook adaptor mounted in the truck bed for unloading stuff as well
LTL freight has always been rough. It behooves the people packaging their goods to crate accordingly. Or be prepared to repair/replace goods.
Why cant the factory and the shipper work together to find out what went wrong and overhaul it ? It feels like nobody cares, but I care, and its not even my business.
@@mrlithium69 I can only guess how those weights were on the pallet but it looks like they were just stacked and strapped... That's a lot of faith in the strapping, even if the stevedores handled everything carefully just the usual bounce of a semi trailer needs to be accounted for... It's likely cheaper just to replace the occasional shipping damage than to properly crate everything.
I could definitely use one of those.
You may need one of those carts at your home shop to unload the Reed and chuck from the back of your ute !
As we get older we work smarter. In my 20's I had no trouble lifting a 100# bag and carrying it a block. Now have trouble lifting a 40# bag out of my SUV.
Great video,Adam.I made my Tubalcrain.Big help.A transpallet system may be better than the trolly for your SkyhookThank you.
Work smarter not harder. A statement that, when you get older you will realize you don't have to prove anything to anyone anymore. Saving back and arms and general well being is what's more important.
If mounted at lathe, it would be nice if the skyhook would reach to a shelf that held chucks
I have one friend with bulged disks and another who broke vertebrae due to unsafe lifting, and not stretching before starting their work shift. They have both been suffering daily for over 20 years. These types of tools are very important for those who need to move heavy loads.
Use the locking bolt to prevent crane components from swiveling when lifting heavy objects.
You’ve got a pretty sweet set up there m8 🍀
it'd make a nice welding cart with a few alterations
I was thinking that when he got your zt fab welding cart, they needed to make something like this. I even pitched the udea to them.
Having various pedestal mount floor studs round the shop, sounds like stubbed toes in Adam's horoscope to me.
Seeing how the column on the swing arm plugs into the holder on the cart I'm thinking that you could make a color out of round tubing to get the arm over your tailgate. Three or four inches long would probably be enough.
*collar
@@surlyogre1476 Thank you.
New Toy Tuesday, yay!
Might also fabricate a flat plate top mount adapter, this way vices/grinders can be mounted, and be used for other applications when the pedestal is not needed for moving materials.
Also...might make a side mount adapter for the fireball tool table, permanent mount location on the side of the table
I’m guessing that at some point, given the comment about how the “Sky Hook “ is a little difficult to swing with a load,we will be seeing a project involving bushings or something so it swivels easier. What ever Adam posts it’s always interesting, good luck with the new toy.
LOL. I kept thinking when is he going to put grease on that thing??? I know he mentioned lubing it but I didn't see him lube it.
I can't believe how many videos I see where people use tools that have pivots or threads or bearings, and they just don't lubricate them. Lube makes the tool last longer and work more efficiently!
Good stuff
I'm not there yet, but I recognize that I SHOULDN'T be throwing big stuff around anymore. Man to have an overhead trolley...
What happened to the little receiver hitch crane you built?
Put out to grass. It proved too hard to remove the pin in the standing leg whilst under load. You know, the one that every man and his dog told him he'd have difficulty with, but he insisted he'd be able to wiggle it out easily enough. He then put 2 videos out demonstrating its use, only to omit the 'wiggling out' stage, lol.
BIG TIME BACK TIME SAVER......An i have gotten really old and thanks to the man with the BIG SMILE
nice sky hook
I'd bolt a wing on the top tray that sticks out directly above the side supports that stick out the same amount. Serious trip hazards there, especially for an old guy (LOL). Maybe they could fold in and out when supports are extended.
Working smarter. Not harder. Nice.
Rather than the expensive counterweights, I'd just fill the cart's base with all the little boxes full of your scrap metal. But each to his own - the skyhook itself is a great design.
Good tool.
Nice 👍
Nice!! 🙂
I know just what you mean about getting older. Just wait until you start to fall apart. Enjoy this time for as long as you can.
I'd bolt the pedestal to 4" I-beams welded in an X with heavy duty casters on the ends. Instead of moving it around to each bolting point on the floor. This way you don't have to also keep transfering the item and crane from cart to pedestal. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Adam, you could sink a tube into the floor of your truck in the corner next to the tailgate. Run the cart with the load up to the truck. Swap the Sky Hook from the cart over to that mount, lift and swing your load off the cart and into the bed. That'll let you position the load in your bed. Quickie tie down. No sweat. Close the tailgate and you'll have the Sky Hook there to unload. If you don't unhook the load, it's weight will hold the Sky Hook down.
might be able to make a trailer hitch mount and have it detachable
Pair that Sky Hook with a mag lifter and you can do away with the straps and that headache.
Exactly what I was thinking when he loaded the first test piece on the saw, the strap would have to be taken off and it’s sitting on it. A magnet could just be released or used to catch the part being cut off.
Once upon a time you would have made one 😢
I love this thing but holy cow expensive! Would be fantastic in my shop.
the hold thing is SAFETY.
Está súper bien para así cuidarse de una hernia y no hacer mala fuerza me gusta mucho este contenido
This was exactly what was suggested when he adapted his skyhook to the lathe etc. Then, it was not deemed a “valuable tool”.
Nice tractor weights.
