Great video Matt! Sorry to hear about your variable speed control not working. I wish I could say it surprises me, but it doesn't. I have a shop full of Powermatic and I think their quality assurance has been lacking for the last 5 years. They are still very good tools, but this kind of thing should not happen with top of the line stuff. I have had good response from their tech assistance folks on the phone though (just don't contact them via email because it appears no one is watching the inbox). PS - Thanks for the shout out on my video 🙂

The speed control story is still being written with twists and turns worthy of a novel. My initial call (as mentioned in the video) was encouraging but I never got that call back. When I called today to check on it there was no record of my previous call. Now I'm concerned because the dude I talked to today said I need to send an email to start the resolution process which isn't encouraging because of your comment... who knew?
To add further drama I'm amazed that the speed control has actually started working... mostly... and I absolutely love the machine! It runs so smoothly, the bright light reminds me of how my eyes worked 30 years ago and the Llambrich chuck (purchased because you featured yours)? How did I EVER do without that?!
Let me know if there's anything I can do to return favors or collaborate... I like your stile and wish you well in all your endeavors!

@@NextLevelCarpentry Ha, I hear you on the eyesight. I have replaced all the florescent tubes in my shop with the brightest LED ones I could get. No energy savings, but its lit like a stadium.
What's amazing to me about that Llambrich chuck is that after a couple years of use, I have yet to have it slip on any bit, and I only use my hands to tighten it. But to release a bit, it also doesn't stick. A quick flick of a wrist (one handed) will drop the bit right out. Its amazing what good design and machining can do together!

      @@JNWoodworks "... like a stadium..." LOL!
I'm curious where and how you found out about Llambrich Chucks. I sense some background or experience at as a machinist or in tool and die?
Also curious about where you bought yours. I got mine through Grainger and guys at Acme Tool sounded like they might be interested in adopting the line. I saw a few of them on Amazon but not this particular model and Amazon certainly didn't have the back ground knowledge to help me figure out the right Chuck for my needs and my drill press.
I appreciate all your feedback and insight...

@@NextLevelCarpentry Actually, I'm a recently retired electrical engineer that used to design computer chip test equipment. However, I have always been interested in mechanical, thermal, and SW aspects of engineering as well, so I dabble in everything. Woodworking was my hobby for 40 years, but now I also have an AVID CNC and added a couple lasers to that just to keep the engineering juices flowing :-)
I bought my chuck off of ebay two years ago. It looks like the link for it is no longer active, but there are other Llambrich chucks for sale there yet as well. Amazon has some too. I don't remember how I ran across this. I think I was just looking for a better chuck because the one I had was kinda disgusting compared to the ones I saw on some precision metal lathes and mills on RUclips, so I just went looking. Every time I use it is still puts a smile on my face.

@@JNWoodworks I wouldn't have guessed an electrical engineering background but then again engineering is more a mindset than a specialty.

FWIW I found that your insight into phone call versus email with Powermatic is valid. I ended up talking to a very helpful guy who is sending a new variable speed controller and printed circuit board to cover all possibilities for the cause of the problem so I'm confident I'll be putting the whole thing behind me soon... thanks again for all your input on this!

Great video Matt! The only issue I had with the lifting of the head was with the strap that went to the front of the head. You had it looped through the eye for your strap around the back. In this case, because the head is so light, it wasn't an issue, but by doing it this way, the strap for the back was taking the full weight of the head. The front strap should have been looped up to the hook of the chain fall, so the back strap wasn't holding the whole weight. As I said though, not a big deal with this lift, but when lifting in the future, keep it in mind.

I purchased my 2820EVS in January of this year and just got to the assembly yesterday. Your video was invaluable, I didn't need to open the manual until I had the head on the column and needed to check overall height to make sure the head was all the way down.
I used all of your tips during the assembly as I work alone most of the time. My wife was able to help a couple of times when needed. I bolted my base to a double thickness 3/4 Baltic birch plywood sub-base and set it in a mobile base from Bora. Not sure about the Bora base yet. I may go to the Rockler All-Terrain mobile base that I had on my last drill press, it worked really well for several years.

My old Delta required moving the belts for every speed change, so I admit I'm guilty of running it an inappropriate speeds because I'm lazy. Never again with the electronic variable speed! I've had my chuck drop out a few times when using large Forstner bits that get jammed. It never occurred to me to clean the female side of the taper. Hi Matt! Congratulations to your new drill press. Looks like a pretty neat machine. Just one comment on installing the chuck: It is even better, to fully insert a 1/2" diameter steel rod into the open chuck and give that one a hit with the plastic hammer, instead of hitting the face of the chuck. The rod transfers the force directly to the bottom of the chuck without putting stress on the locking mechanism of the chuck.
Just replaced the old chuck on my drill press with a keyless from Röhm (the top notch manufacturerer of chucks over here in Germany) and it makes a huge difference in terms of accuracy.

I upgraded to a high end South Bend keyless chuck and did not order the optional tightening wrench. I loved the ease of using this chuck and no drill bits came loose from hand tiightening the chuck. Then one day my new chuck developed an extremely tight grip on one drill.bit. Support advised ordering the optional wrench that has a pin on one end that fits in a hole. Standard wrenches would have marred the chuck's finely machined surface. This wrench provided enough leverage to easily loosen the chuck's death grip on my drill. My chuck works as well now as it did before this one incident.

    Good stuff!
You mentioned a couple of times about making the table level. The real issue is not having it level, it is having it perpendicular to the column. On second thought, make that perpendicular to the SPINDLE. You have that table tilt mechanism, with the adjustable index, so you really want to get that zeroed vs the spindle and then adjust the index point. At the same time I suggest checking how well the table aligns with the spindle on the other axis, front to rear. In other words on the axis you can't really adjust. Well, you sort of could adjust it using those leveling screws under the table insert... lets hope you don't find anything wrong when you do that check. My mind is full of things like dial indicators you could use for some of that, memories from my summer job as a machinist fifty-plus years ago. But I think something like a perfectly straight piece of drill rod chucked in the spindle (not too short, say six inches protruding) and a really good machinist square should be all you need to verify (or not) perpendicularity. After all, you work with wood, and this isn't a milling machine!

I didn't get a call back right away Tuesday after the 4th of July but after an email and phone call they're sending me a new potentiometer and circuit board to cover the bases for whichever one of those is at fault.

These kinds of things happen and if they happen to me and Powermatic addresses the problem I've got no issue with it because I appreciate the design investment they put into creating new equipment like this which is far superior to any previous machines in this category IMHO.

I'll be glad to fill you in on details if you're tempted to pull the trigger on one. The robust/accurate depth stop alone justifies the whole endeavor. Improved work light, table adjustment features, power, smooth operation... yeah, totally worth it. I've already modified/adapted the setup for sacrificial inserts so that's sweet but the fence? Not so much. Probably going to go with a Mag Fence or maybe customized version of the stock one. Matt, as usual your video was excellent. Powermatic machine, not so much. The variable speed is a big deal on any drill press. With the amount of money you paid for it, inexcusable. I don't care how great the customer service is, there shouldn't be a thing wrong when you get the press. Quality control at the factory seems to be a bit on the short side. I've been looking at upgrading to a floor model and like the gear driven model(s) over the belt. I believe I'll take a closer look at the Nova. Both have a major and rather large price tag , but the convenience and power of gear driven has intrigued me.
I built custom homes for the major part of my career (along with some larger commercial work) so I'm used to having top quality tools either on the job site or in the shop. It seems to me that Powermatic (along with a few other "name" brands) have dropped the ball. A couple of other brand names have popped up lately, Harvey for one and South Bend another that might be looked at. Both have been around for quite awhile in other areas than construction or home shops. I'm glad I caught this video, the speed control is a BIG RED FLAG (for me anyhow). No excuse on that major feature.
    P.S.
I'm retired now (that's a lie!) I'm married so I work! I get, as so many other so-called retired guys "now that you have time on your hands, you can build......... for me! So off I go building outdoor furniture, an outdoor entertainment center and along with these, a outdoor cooking/ Bar-B-Que area so far! :) Please keep up with the non-bias videos. I've covered just about all the bases as far as a complete home shop but I'm lacking a lathe. Still trying to justify the cost. Could you possibly do a video on a lathe comparison? You seem to have a way with words that sinks in, at least to me.
    Thanks again!

Thanks for watching and commenting Bruce.
I understand your reaction and position towards Powermatic but I'll caution you about ruling out the Powermatic based on that meaningful but actually minor problem. I say that based on feedback from other viewers and other RUclipsrs who have the same drill press but have never experienced the problem and actually love the machine as I do despite the faulty speed control.
Somewhere Out There is a person who had some initial problem with A nova drill press which could well elicit the same reaction so I would recommend considering the features of both machines aligned with your intended use and make a decision that way rather than one based on a knee-jerk reaction from a faulty control. If there were other systemic problems with the machine it would sway my decision but because the problem is so isolated and fixable I've no regrets whatever about dealing with it.
When I do a follow-up video you will learn that the problem has kind of fixed itself so I suspect a loose wire rather than a catastrophic failure of the control or printed circuit board. Powermatic is sending me a new control and a circuit board in case one of them ends up being at fault and when I dig into it I will learn if a loose wire is the culprit or something erratic in the switch or circuit board. Here again this doesn't really trouble me because I've made a number of parts using the drill press when the speed control is working and it is so smooth powerful and user friendly I have no regrets whatever for the purchase even with the speed control issue.
I'll be curious to hear what drill press you end up buying.
As far as the lathe is concerned I have near zero experience with them and have never owned one so although I would really like to give you some feedback I'm the wrong person for the job.
I don't have a recommendation for a RUclipsr doing lathe work either but I'm certain there's more than a few out there.
      Best,
      Matt

I did something similar with a Delta drill press years ago. At first I thought it was a great drill press but now the quill has so much play it is hard to drill an accurate hole even for woodworking. The Morse taper #2 is a limiting factor for metal work. Everyone uses it but if you try to drill in metal with a bit larger than 5/8” it will slip. Of course Delta doesn’t claim it will so I really can’t complain about that. If you drive past the Delta factory here in Tennessee it now says Delta Faucets. No longer made in USA. Not the quality I want.

      Hey Louis,
The main problem I had with my Delta was a setscrew on an adjustable die-cast drive pulley cracked the casting (no real surprise) so it always stalled out when drilling large holes in low range and low RPM. I only recently dug deep enough to fix it for good because I was motivated by not wanting to sell a compromised machine to a friend. Wish I'd known the real cause of the problem years earlier though. Neither Delta or Powermatic are the quality they built their reputation on IMHO but at least Powermatic still has substantial tools available, albeit foreign made.

The OCD part is in imagining that the tool gets exposed to water or moisture somewhere in its life where the gasket would prevent column and base from fusing together from rust? Yeah, OCD for sure but, hey, that's me🤓
I don't expect others to make a gasket or imply that anyone who doesn't take that extra measure isn't diligent about tool assembly but think a few might extrapolate quick gasket-making methods for use when they're actually necessary...

I'm not understanding why a gasket was used between the base plate and column. Gaskets are to seal, there's nothing that needs sealed here. The machined surfaces touching would help the bolts stay in place. The gasket will break down over time and the bolts will loosen. I just don't understand, I'm not telling you what to do. Very informative video though.

    • @NextLevelCarpentry
      @NextLevelCarpentry  Год назад +1

Sounds like my generic use of the term "gasket" has thrown you off.
9It's true that "there's nothing that needs (to be) sealed" but gaskets are able to seal because they're slightly compress-able. Compress-ability allows gasket material to compensate for slight variations in non-compressible steel surfaces. This assures a 'perfect' fit between two less than perfect machined surfaces like the drillpress's column and base plate. FWIW the gasket material will not "break down over time", especially in a shop environment, unless you're referring to geologic or galactic time😉. Proof of that reality can be found by taking apart and old tractor that's been out in harsh weather for decades: metal might be rusty but head gaskets and the like will be in near perfect condition...
