    So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. Before we were cruising sailors we were both regatta winning racing sailors. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too!
    Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. She is a fast monohull performance cruising sailboat. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking.
    Now, we have two transatlantic passages under our belt, have sailed the coast of South America, rounded Cape Horn, transited the Patagonia fjords and Straight of Magellan, and are sailing across the Pacific Ocean as we work towards our goal of sailing around the world. We have sailed almost 20,000 bluewater miles to date.
    We watched other sailing channels before we left as well. We even considered van life, a tiny home, or a motorhome / rv. Some of the channels we enjoyed were Gone with the Wynns, Project Atticus, Sailing La Vagabonde, and MJ Sailing. We didn't really set out to be influencers, but we wanted to return the good karma and pass our inspiration and knowledge along so we starting making RUclips sailing videos.
    Come sailing virtually with us and join in on the adventure, we hope you enjoy our relaxing & satisfying video on #sailingsunday!
    XO XO Kate, Curtis & Roxy the Sailing Dog

      Hey guys! Kate here 🙂 In this particular instance, the 'yelling' was for urgency and to be heard over the wind. If the spinnaker ended up in the water it could have been very dangerous to say the least. At the end of the clip you can hear Curtis YELL "great job Kate". No hard feelings were had. Hope that clears it up! But I agree, we are definitely not racing, to which I also do not accept screaming, only yelling over the wind or displaying urgency 🙂

    You all are the very best at sailing and explaining sailing I have ever watched. I really like the occasional shot of the instrument cluster to see what direction and wind angle you are sailing. But I am wondering why the win-gen doesn't always match the wind direction. Because of the motion of the boat? As a non-sailor, things like that catch my eye. Really good to see the big smiles as you hit warmer weather. Roxy dreaming is hilarious. As always. Keep having fun and stay safe. Bill

    • @captainjimolchs
      @captainjimolchs 26 дней назад +1

      True and apparent wind directions are different.

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  25 дней назад +1

      Thanks Bill! Great question! Impressive you are noticing it, you have a good eye for sailing! You are right to mention boat motion, the wind gen is fairly heavy (a big truck alternator on a stick basically) and momentum and waves can cause it to go off kilter. When sailing upwind the mainsail also can send some wash aft and spin it out (like a little airplane flying behind a big one). Capt. Jim has a good eye also, we sail downwind by the True Wind Angle on the instruments, which is the actual direction of the wind in relation to the water surface, however the wind generator flies at the Apparent Wind Angle, the direction felt by the sails due to the boat’s movement through the water….think if you are driving in your car and stick your hand out the window on the highway, that is Apparent Wind. For example, if our instruments say the TWA is 135 and we are sailing along at 8 knots, our apparent wind angle (AWA) may be 90 degrees (this is not an exact calculation), because the boat is moving forward.

      Hi! Kate here. I totally get it and absolutely agree! However, in this situation the shouting was for urgency and project through the wind. Sometimes in cruising things go wrong and you can't just 'relax' your way through the maneuver. At the end you can hear Curtis say "Great job Kate!". But unfortunately my poor editing placed a voice over on top of it. Hope you are able to race again some day with people that don't scream to be mean.

      Right on! She can surf but doesn’t plane. These days with a full long distance cruising load and mountains of spares for remote exploration it takes a lot more wind and waves to get her surfing than in “lightship” or “race” configuration.
