No, land is not a sailboats friend. Once you set sail you have only two enemies, big waves and rocks. Deep water is your friend, wide oceans are your sanctuary. Be very weary of heading for shore in a storm. The shore is rocks. You are sailors, you must let go of the shore, and learn to stay safe in big waves. I was a delivery skipper for 20 years. I never left the dock without a proper sea anchor, (Pardy style) ready to deploy from the cockpit. Your beautiful boat will carry all of your dreams to the top of every wave and beyond. Always have a sea anchor, and never race for the shore. Write that down.
A sea anchor looks like a parachute and works like a massive brake in the water. Use a sea anchor when you want to stop as much of the boats travel through the water as possible, if you were being pushed toward a lee shore, for example. While a drogue is similar it can be used to "moderate" the boat's speed, depending on how much of it is paid out. It just creates drag. A big old car tire on the end of a line can be quite effective. It is worth having both. You will find youtube videos on all of this. Happy sailing! @@sailing1stwatch
Even dying at sea is much better than living a non-life of unquiet desperation on land. I plan to buy a Cheoy Lee 33 ketch, 48 years old, and sail off into the sunset. And encounter no end of grief. So be it.
So often, with costal cruising, one is thinking that you need to make the destination achorage by nightfall, so you end up motoring all the time. If you head out across the Pacific, you will encounter more of this ... best to be prepared with a satellite phone, lots of extra fuel, "air conditioning" that runs EASILY on your solar panels, and a good water system.
The bittersweet realities of sailing were so expertly presented to all of us wishing we were there beside you. You will be able to handle anything thrown your way. Have a safe journey, glad your feeling better and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. 💨 ⚓️🌊
little hint that might help you guys out, when cooking bacon, cut strips in half, they are easier to handle and the cook faster which means less gas use ... when trying to use cutting board or trying to fix a plate of food when seas are ruff, put a towel down and it won`t slide allover counter ....... Thanks for the tip on the cloth under the cutting board/cookware. A few people have mentioned that and I've given it a go and it seems to work much better! Too bad I didn't know this tip on our crossing! Cheers!

Hi guys. Catching up on your videos. Was watching when you struggled with your asym. You might have gotten already but just in case. You really need a shackle that releases under load at the tack. Great video. Too bad about your colds. Flying fish taste great you know. Barbados is known for flying fish. A flying fish sandwich with pepper sauce is the best. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Hello, good morning, well I wanted to tell you that being in the convergence zone you must observe the weather every 90 minutes and it is not recommended in this area to hoist the spy, do not risk speed for comfort, good fortune and they are going very well
Good video. Watching from Kaohsiung, Taiwan where my wife is taking an ASA101 course. Crossing the Pacific seems an ocean away from practicing tacking, gybing and man over board in Chinese!
I'm getting addicted to some of the sailing channels out there. You sailor's are the 1% that have the mental fortitude, resilience, emotional intelligence and zest for life that is needed to do this! Incredible!
What a pleasure to see a contrast between white beaches and bikini girls to describe "ocean crossing". Real life is so much more satisfying to watch and just feeling the hope that you will feel better to get back to where you think you ought to be in that ocean crossing. The effort to make these videos when sick is really worth it. Well done and I hope you both feel better soon so YOU can enjoy the crossing.
We had the exact same rug! Those ocean sunsets and sunrises are amazing. Put those flying fish on a hook or in a frying pan. I can't imagine going across the Pacific. Thankfully I have never been seasick, but it's just too long at sea for me. Good on you for conquering it!
We discussed this but with the boat all ready to go, we knew a few days stop we would then have to re-provision fresh fruit and veg, re-hoist the dinghy, etc etc. So we decided to keep pushing.
Thanks for your great video - it’s the first time I’ve seen your channel. We are also sailing around the world on SV Knot So Bad and also have a video channel on RUclips. I note you have Starlink - we recently got ours and are very pleased with it but as we approach the Pacific ( we are currently in Aruba) I’m concerned about what will happen when we leave the Caribbean - would you mind telling me what contract you guys have - we are currently on the roaming contract and bought our Starlink in Trinidad. Many thanks and keep posting. John & Sandra
Hi guys! We will check out your channel! Happy to chat about our experience with Starlink. It would be easier to type a proper reply via email. Would you mind to drop us a note at sailingonelife@gmail.com ?
I can’t imagine how hard it would be to be rolling around like that day after day! Really interesting to see what you do during the day and how hard it is to make meals!
Interesting situation. One almost wonders , as would an astronaut, if one should isolate for at least a week before sailing across the seas. That way you know your going to be good, as after all, the fastest I've seen is 19 days, longest is 60 days. So, being able to handle just about anything is very important ! Imagine sick and SOLO ! Wow. Prepping food, well, yah, that is what someone could do during that isolation time, 5 days minimum. My two fridges would keep it in good shape. That said, typically, 4 days out, things settle down regardless. I LOVE one life, your boat is basic, your channel name is awesome, and you two are inspiring. Thanks. People always throw those flying fish back in as they are fatty and stink. That makes them excellent bait though. Dolphins love them but are smart enough to notice a hook.
Yeah, you know we planned for lots of scenarios but getting colds right out of the gate was not one! We have a fridge and freezer onboard and both were stuffed with food. No room for prepared meals. My logic was if it was too rough to cook, we probably wouldn't feel like eating anyway. 🤣
Thank you for sharing your story. It feeds my soul. I am "touched, moved and inspired". The details of my dream differs from yours. However, the intention is the same. To get out there, follow the dream, come what may and, don't listen to the naysayers. One can start from 0 experience. Put in the work, train, practice and become competent. This is so refreshing. I spent the last week being told, NO, Not Possible, Bad idea, Try something different. I think I needed to hear it all. It was a test. I say that because in the face of it my heart and mind hasn't changed. I didn't take it on as my limit. I realized it was theirs. Best of luck. Thank you again.
Hey Michael! We agree, it is not your limit, it is theirs. There will always be naysayers, keep chasing your dream! With determination, resilience and hard work, anything is possible! Happy New Year!! 🥂💙
It's on now! From the frying pan into the fire. So far you two are doing great through the challenges. Those flying fish, when they're even smaller than that first one you showed, are very colorful and remind me of the fancy guppies in a pet shop. Safe passage !
Hi both What a great video (the real world) highs and lows. With you both not feeling well and the toilet not working, I really feel for you! Hope you feel better soon. Keep your chin up👍🥰🥰🏴
Hey John! Just sent you a message on Patreon. Thanks for the tip on bacon. I (Brooke) am a total weirdo and only eat fatty bacon 'limpy' and I've slowly converted Gary into eating it this way too. 🤣 I know, most people find it disgusting that way.
I am enjoying this adventure along with you as I did with Sailing Zatara. I have sorta binged watched many of your previous video logs. Since I am a Florida senior and my adventurous years are behind me I love living vicariously through you guys. Be safe and fun journey.
Such a great video! So happy to getting to see the beginning of your journey! I can’t imagine how hard it must be fighting off sickness and dealing with conditions like those. But you guys are champs! If you can make it through this, you can make it through anything!
Can't think of a more difficult situatiuon ... hope you get well soon Brooke. At least Gary ... let me correct that, hopefully together you can each use a little energy to sail safely. Advice from a land lubber, like me, should be taken with a pinch of salt! Brave ,,, brave ,,, brave ...
Hear your background story was pretty amazing. A little crazy, but for us the viewers, so glad you did it. You're a groovy couple. The start of your latest trip sucks. Both getting really sick and the head going down. I think most people would of turned the boat around and gone back to port. Hang in there. At least you got tacos. Stay safe and stay groovy. PS you need to purchase a cheap camping porta potty.
Hey Mark! Ha yeah we may be a little crazy but doesn't everyone have some level of crazy?! 😂 Thanks for always rooting for us out here. See ya next episode!
This was actually an awesome video. I'm sorry you had to deal with having a cold, but we got a good portrayal of the realities of what sailing can truly be. We all love the wonderful sunrises and sunsets. We enjoy the times that it's all smooth sailing and you're just kicked back and relaxed. Those of us watching along probably forget that all the fantastic locations and beautiful vistas we get to see ,are tempered with You two actually working through the unseen by us travails the ocean throws your way. This was a good example of why I enjoy your vids so much, we see reality, and you just work through the hardships with a smile. Hopefully smooth sailing is ahead.
What a great moment to be heading out. Hope Gary gets better. Yay the wind. Wow, rough, but nice to see it calming down a bit. Oh no, hope Brooke gets better soon as well. I feel for you guys, I hope things get better all round for you. Well done for making Tacos in that roll. Love the vlog :)
My family and I have used colloidal silver for about 15 years now. It's great to help fight different bacteria and viruses. We don't leave home without it when we go on vacation. It would probably be a great addition to your sailboat medicine cabinet.
Wow, great job you 2 I was totally immersed in this episode, and was bummed when it ended. Hopefully by now y’all are feeling better and have some naughty miles behind you. Best of luck and look forward to the continued adventures of Gary and Brooke!

Hi you two, Always happy to see your smiling faces, Yeah, Sushi is good for bugs at sea. Throw out a couple lines. Best to you always. .
Hi David! Thank you :) At this point in the passage we didn't have the energy for fishing. 😂
Great video. Too bad about your colds. Flying fish taste great you know. Barbados is known for flying fish. A flying fish sandwich with pepper sauce is the best. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Hi Lois! Seems like lots of people are fans of eating flying fish. Maybe we will give one a go one of these days! Thank you!
Hello, good morning, well I wanted to tell you that being in the convergence zone you must observe the weather every 90 minutes and it is not recommended in this area to hoist the spy, do not risk speed for comfort, good fortune and they are going very well
Thanks for the well wishes. The ITCZ is a tricky area no doubt.
You can't beat real life on One Life. Lol
Long periods of boredom followed by moments of sheer excitement.
Hahaha yup that's exactly it! Lots of boredom til chaos ensues!
Good video. Watching from Kaohsiung, Taiwan where my wife is taking an ASA101 course. Crossing the Pacific seems an ocean away from practicing tacking, gybing and man over board in Chinese!
Ah so cool you are watching from Taiwan! Hope your wife enjoys the course and you can get out here soon! Cheers~
Nothing as bad as a man cold.
At least you still have your can do attitude Gary. Bacon was probably not the best choice. You two rock.
Things can always be worse! Gary was a trooper for the bacon making!
I'm getting addicted to some of the sailing channels out there. You sailor's are the 1% that have the mental fortitude, resilience, emotional intelligence and zest for life that is needed to do this! Incredible!
Wow, thank you for the awesome comment! We appreciate you coming along with us out here!
Thank you so much! Happy to hear you enjoyed this video! And yep, we recovered from our colds quickly!
We had the exact same rug! Those ocean sunsets and sunrises are amazing. Put those flying fish on a hook or in a frying pan. I can't imagine going across the Pacific. Thankfully I have never been seasick, but it's just too long at sea for me. Good on you for conquering it!
Too funny that you had the same rug! It is quite a long passage. Thanks for the comment!
I would have stoped in cabo if sick for sure. You guys are hard core.
We discussed this but with the boat all ready to go, we knew a few days stop we would then have to re-provision fresh fruit and veg, re-hoist the dinghy, etc etc. So we decided to keep pushing.
Hard start. Betting the end goal will be even more rewarding. Looking forward to watching more! Thanks Crew!!!
More to come soon! 🥰
Thank you guys for let us be part of this amazing journey 🌊🎣
Thanks for coming along with us!
Hreat filming. Nice job of dealing with it.
Thank you, Gerald! Appreciate it!
I hope the best for you, greetings from Croatia🤞🍀
Thank you for the good vibes all the way from Croatia! 🇭🇷
Ha yeah it wasn't easy and quite frustrating/annoying at times. We really don't do too much during the day in rolly conditions. 😂
Old chef here. Love the videos! Want good bacon easier? Bake it on a cookie sheet.
Thanks for the tip! Brooke doesn't like her bacon crispy 😂
Thanks for all the encouragement!
Ha, yep can totally see why flying fish remind you of the pet shop guppies!
Hi both
What a great video (the real world) highs and lows. With you both not feeling well and the toilet not working, I really feel for you!
Hope you feel better soon. Keep your chin up👍🥰🥰🏴
Hi there! Thank you! We really appreciate the good vibes!
please, cut your bacon in half and get crispy. Turn it often but stay with it till it is crispy.
Hi there! Thanks for coming along with us! Hope you are enjoying the journey. Very nice to hear that you are in Florida! Cheers!
Hooray for the bucket. Never clogs, always flushes. Good job
Haha, old reliable! 🚽🪠
Awsome yall are giving some of us the only chance to really experience an adventure of this nature. My upmost respect to yall. Thanks
Thanks for coming along with us on this adventure!
Awesome video.......felt like I was right there.......the good with the bad.... way to go you two
Thanks, Steve! We appreciate you following along with us!
Such a great video! So happy to getting to see the beginning of your journey! I can’t imagine how hard it must be fighting off sickness and dealing with conditions like those. But you guys are champs! If you can make it through this, you can make it through anything!
Hahaha it's your turn soon! There's still time to say no! 😂⛵
nice.
Particularly enjoyed the intro of this episode.
Thanks, Dave! We thought the intro would be a nice little throwback! Glad you noticed!
Thank you, Laurie! Yes, very grateful to have each other and be able to work through situations like this together. 💙
Bon voyage!
Thanks, Martin!
Be safe have fun all be watching every episode
Thank you! Excited to share the rest of our passage with everyone!
Nice video! Hope your colds were short lived and you were soon able to better enjoy the adventure. Thanks for taking us with you. All the best...
Hi Steve! Thanks for coming along with us! Yes, thankfully our colds were short lived!
Wow Sailors, just keep on going or should I say keep on SAILING .
Love your channel
Thank you so much! Onward we go! ⛵🙌
Even sick as dogs you guys gave us a great episode. Looking forward to the next. Have fun guys
Hey Dane, thank you! Hope you are doing well!
Shine on you crazy peaches.... peaches being a cut above diamonds ⛵😊
Thanks, Paul! Crazy peaches! 😂 Good one!
Hi Terrance! Thank you! Yes, we thought it would be nice to show the reality of what it's like. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! Luckily our colds didn't linger for very long! Hope you have a great weekend! See ya next video!
My family and I have used colloidal silver for about 15 years now. It's great to help fight different bacteria and viruses. We don't leave home without it when we go on vacation. It would probably be a great addition to your sailboat medicine cabinet.
We also love colloidal silver and have it onboard! Great item to have!
Wow, great job you 2 I was totally immersed in this episode, and was bummed when it ended. Hopefully by now y’all are feeling better and have some naughty miles behind you. Best of luck and look forward to the continued adventures of Gary and Brooke!
Hi Donald! Happy to hear you enjoyed this episode. Looking forward to getting our next video finished!
