I have been living off grid for almost 20 years now. When I was 21 I purchased a 400 acre property in the Mojave Desert with nothing on it. The first structure I built was a small 20'x20' one room home. I started off with a old Kohler 10kw Diesel generator and I didn't have a well for the first 3 years so I had to truck water in. Fast-forward 20 years later I have 22kw of solar and 36kw of wind power with a 100kw diesel backup generator. With two wells and 100,000 gallons of underground water storage. The little 20x20 one room home now serves another purpose since I built a proper 6,000 sq ft home and a few other buildings.

It's incredible to see how they share 4 key things every sailor should know. As an engineer, I loved the technical insights and got nostalgic thinking about the old episode with Brady. Also, kudos to the Delos team for delivering such a well-edited and professional video in the middle of nowhere! It's truly amazing what can be achieved in this day and age. Keep up the great work, guys! 🙌😄
I used to sail professionally in my youth, I'm fully land based now though. Something we used to do from sailing is wrap iceburg lettuce in a good few layers of kitchen paper and ziplock bag it, then freeze it, if you have space. It can be so nice when all the fresh leaves are gone to throw together a crisp salad. Also if you plan a little bit and buy your flour 2 days before your freezer products, you can freeze the flour for 24 hours to kill off any of the little bugs that may hatch and thrive in flour. I do this now even on land, as i dont bake much so flour can sit in my cupboard for months unused. And when i go to use it, its alive. The larvae is there in all flour from the field, but only grows and hatches 6-8 months after processing (use by date) so freezing kills it off before it can impact your flour. Ziploc bag, freezer 24+ hours, good to go😊
Great episode ! One thing that interests me is how you plan for destinations, timelines, avoiding troublesome areas and weather. How much is just winging it, vs planning ahead or long term destination goals. And does there come a time after roughing it and isolating, that you rendezvous with past cruisers and friends at certain time lines, or are they all just chance encounters! Also Brian always does such a great job of researching your destinations and areas visited. Does he read up ahead of arrival to plan visits and local history, or just gain knowledge from the locals.
I've been watching you guys for nearly a decade. If you keep your potatoes and onions in a dark place, they will last longer. Even the dark tinted bags they come in at the store will work, so long as they can breath. Prevents them from turning green and sprouting as quickly. I know fridge space is at a premium, but avocados can be stretched quite a bit if you refrigerate them. Buy the super green and hard ones, and keep them cold. Take them out threeish days prior to use to let them ripen. Washing veggies in a diluted white vinegar solution can add just a little shelf life to them as well.
if you want to live on a boat it can be done fairly cheap with somewhat limited mechanical skills, if you want to live on a boat the way these people do you will need 1 enough time because fixing it will be your full time job 2 mechanical/technical knowledge to do so 3 massively deep pockets to afford to fix the boat
I absolutely loved this video. I'm not a sailor and have never even been on a sail boat. But I loved how the various systems on Delos work. I believe Brian could fix anything.
I was a shore based seafood plant engineer and chief during my working years in Alaska, love these types of videos, very stimulating. I owned a sailboat for awhile and sailed up the coast from WA to AK, so I can dig it! You guys are living the dream for me, at one time I was going to do that, round the world, but so many things in life to do and can't do it all! Living the dream for yourselves, others and me, so much thanks! And of interest too if water becomes less available or the need to generate ones own power, stocking up etc. Pura Vida!
Thanks so much for all these fascinating videos of your journey and the behind the scenes! Your entire journey has been incredibly inspirational! It has actually inspired me to follow my own dream and take a 1 year hiatus from software programing and head to Japan to continue my Japanese language studies! I always try to inspire my friends and family with "the story of how 1 guy dropped everything and decided to sail the seas...with a enough research, planning, and motivation...you can do anything"
IMO you three are able to do so because of Bryan's Ability and Skill in dealing with all the problems, not to take anything away from Kaza as it takes a woman's touch to make it all enjoyable and happy. Thanks "Guys" for sharing your lives with us. SAFE TRAVELS!
Great job with putting your boat life together. It helps me to get my best of pirate family life. I'm sure we all miss your brother and Blue and other ship mates however everything that can will evolve and change to get even more centered into what everyone needs. I couldn't do what you do by myself. I need to share things to be happy. Before too long your kind of life won't be viable for me as I am healthy as I can be for a 77 year old construction mechanic can be in 2024. It is a dream to believe in a month on Delos. Wow, I own an online company that can run from anywhere with internet, and I just bought my first 30 foot yacht, and have been setting it up similar to what you've done, however, you guys are way ahead of me. All the things that you have planned for are exactly what I have also been looking at, I think I need a bigger boat lol :)
Thank you for this video. I am about to join as a solo sailor ~6-12 months. I love the ocean and looking back my whole life has taught me to be an DYi guy. I even bought a welder before knowing how to weld so this is just one more rung in the ladder. Lots of research before I do anything so blindly jumping isn't how I usually do a thing but I get there are times life sends us into action without notice, so being a solution oriented person helps on the fly. I am so pleased for you both and your lovely butterfly missy ;) Thanks for sharing!
I have been filling my whole knowledge of off grid sailing in negativity to see if I still want to make this change. I still did after watching all those videos. And then I came across this video. This definitely confirmed me. I want this life. I'm ready to buy this year. All the negative stuff just needs to go now and fill my heart with what awaits in my future early retirement.
Thanks Brian and Kazza, this is great information. Of course we love seeing your adventures, but these types of videos convey a more intimate feel as if we were your neighbors. Please keep mixing these in with the rest!

The inquiry delves into the intricate balance between spontaneity and meticulous planning in travel adventures, pondering the extent to which one improvises versus strategically plans for destinations, timelines, and circumventing challenges like adverse weather and problematic areas. It also contemplates the transition from rugged isolation to reconnecting with fellow travelers - whether these encounters are serendipitous or prearranged. Furthermore, it praises Brian's adeptness at researching destinations and wonders whether his expertise stems from pre-trip study or insights gathered from locals upon arrival.
@robinprice6879 I miss the good ole days when sailing channels sailed instead of promoting AG1, knives, Mud Water, Mental Health, or their books, sailing schools, knitted hats, jewelery, etc... Flea market infomercial. 😅
**GREAT** video Delos!! For those of us saving for our own boat & preparing to cruise the world, this type of content is invaluable, not just for what you tell us, but also for prompting us to think about what all we need to learn before casting off. Thank you!!
you are quite wise and very informative ! thank you ! why not have a solar hot water heater ? Do you have room for one ? have you ever used a towed alternator ? too much drag ? 🙂
do you think they built the boat, too? People who grow their own food don't personally forge their shovels. They're obviously about as off grid as you can get.
off-grid adjective not using or depending on public utilities, especially the supply of electricity. "off-grid housing" adverb without using or depending on public utilities, especially the supply of electricity. "he has lived off-grid for 32 years"

Being married now 29 yrs with 6 kids, I love the love you both have for each other. Thank you for showing me some very interesting details about how it all works and comes together. Thank you, Brian and Kazza!
Fruit preservation: I read that if you rinse your fruit in a solution of 3 parts water and 1 part white vinegar it kills most of the surface bacteria on the fruit peel and will help keep it from spoiling for longer. Great info in this video, even for living off grid on land.
I’m working on becoming a sailor myself, in the next few years I plan on buying my first boat and learning to sail and also learning how to maintain them. I find your videos very educational and I hope you keep it going.
I can tell you guys 100% that your daughter officially has without a doubt the most memorable most special childhood that any kid has ever had! You guys get to spend all your time with her so she'll have such a close bond with her parents. So cute! She's now basically a fish! But yeah she literally will have the most memorable, most adventurous childhood of any child! BTW! Screw that guy here in the comments who said you guys only make promo videos now. Clearly he doesn't watch your videos. Love you guys!
You two are lucky to have each other. Have created an amazing family and the Nugget is one day going to be the captain of her own boat guaranteed with a swab (husband) lol, yelling out “we got the wind now boss”. I think the first episode I ever watched, someone yelled that out and I caught the reference immediately and knew that y’all had my since of humor because I loved that movie from first watch. Haven’t missed an ep since and of course went all the way back to the beginning and binged the whole channel . Safe travels
I liked your video… you covered much of the points that I have questions on…. I do have a question about why only 1 wind generator? It seems as you have space to put a few…. Of course that is assuming they actually do provide power
Thank you guys! It is safe to say I envy you so! But am so happy for you all, that you are able to experience this lifestyle, while you are in good physical health and able to do so. Love to you all XO Darcee (from North Truro, Cape Cod, USA)
Your four items are the same as people have who live on firm dry land! But your perspective is unique as to how to create electricity and water; shop and store all the food products; and how to stay abreast of current events and entertainment. It takes a lot of management skills and organization! Great video.
I loved your explanation on how stuff works, it’s great. I can also understand the struggle to have a new episode each week and how easy you could loose track of things and control thus your way of life. Also I can understand that supporting your way of live needs everything that you can use , so commercials are totally fine. Great wok guys, it’s hard with a little kid so you’re doing great
It really is astonishing how far our communications technology has evolved. It is a total game changer in how we interact with each other. My watch is right out of a Dick Tracy cartoon. Thanks for the tour.
I suspect fish they catch is a huge source of their protein. As someone who doesn't love fish.... I guess I would either have to get over it/adapt or I'd be living off rice and beans the whole time. Kazaa and the cheese cracked me up, I can't live without cheese and I have no idea where they hide it all. Last.... the eggs. I had no idea they could go long periods without fridge, crazy. Good video Team Delos, keep up the great work!
I started watching Lavag, you, Lauren S. Parlay & B2B idk a yr ago and I just love n live through these sailing channels. But I now see Delos are the OG, mom n dad of the seas. ❤
Fabulous episode. Thanks for sharing the info. Anytime you both can make these informative videos the better. The simplistic close ups and details information is very helpful to us that truly enjoy learn. All the Very Best to the three of you! Jim Rodgers
Hello from the motherland of Flagstaff, AZ. We have had over a foot of snow in the last day or two. I haven't caught up in a while. You guys look like you are doing so great. Huge smiles, love it. I have a 27' sailboat I have been working on here in the hills for a little over 2yrs now. Looked like someone went to town in the cockpit with a machine gun, a reciprocating saw and then set off a 5 gallon epoxy bomb with wood shrapnel scattered about the inside. You are an inspiration! Glad you guys have not traded the sails in for 4 corners and a top. What a life, what a life : ) fair winds mates : )
Love you guys, been following you for years and working on catching up. Got laid off last year and had to take care of my elderly mom and now back working on my career.
Fantastic video. The information you guys gave us cannot get any better or be more on point! One thing that wasn't explained was the need for the crew members to collectively possess the knowledge and skills to manage and maintain all of these systems. Between Brian and Kazza, they have a really solid skill set to be as self-sufficient as it takes, along with the ability to 'figger-out' how to deal with the weird surprises that come up. Blue water wannabes not up to these challenges, sail at their peril.
So this may sound like a silly question but my husband and I live on a boat and are planning to begin our sailing journey in the next few years. We love your videos and learn a lot from you both. This question is mostly for Kaza- do you have any suggestions or care to share about your “ beauty” regimen. Obviously sailing does not require make up or fancy hair styles but do you provision for toiletries such as shampoos, skin care etc or do you make your own? I would love to see a video of “how a woman/mom manages on a sailboat for 14 years. May sound silly but think it would be a cool video for Al the female sailors/first mates!
2:01 I have one concern, which might also be a criticism: What about medicine? If someone was to get an infection or some other disease, or get badly injured? I think it's a good idea to plan for that too. Especially with an infant around.
and...that's how it's done. I live on my own primarily off grid and I love how you have done pretty much the same, except to the extreme. I love your channel and I love your life...
Awesome video! Thank you so much. I had some follow up question if that is ok as I am currently trying to understand how I need to size the electric for my own boat. 1. Did you fully remove Gas from your boat? And if what was the reasoning? 2. How did you size your battery bank? And which products did you use there? 3. With Starlink are you experiencing any longer downtime? Or could a remote 9-5 been done with it? Thanks a lot for your support 🙌
Great episode Delos crew! As a sailor I appreciate the concept of taking an older boat and getting her to the point that you are totally self sufficient. You are doing the cruising lifestyle with such a high level of proficiency it’s really a treat to watch. A couple of thoughts for future videos: Your lifestyle is so honed - how do you bring a new visitor or crew member into the mix without overwhelming them with the tiny details of “this goes here” and “don’t do that”? // What would be your advice for how to prioritize updates to a boat? // Being so remote what safety and emergency plans do you have (the doctor/starlink concept you mention in this video is something I have not thought about before and the concept of remote medical care a great subject in itself) but also it brings to mind that there are many types of emergencies you must be planning for. Been a fan for a long time - thanks for all your efforts to bring something unique to the world!
Great video, ive always wondered how you guys do it, ive especially wondered how solar power works and how it applies to everyday use so thank you for this video
Love when you take a deep dive into a subject. Thinking back when you were in Mexico dodging hurricanes, would love to hear from your years of experience about how you navigated around the globe once. I would think weather and navigation would be really interesting to many of us that know a bit about it, and pull back the curtain on what appears to be magic to everyone that wonders how you sail to a dot in the middle of nowhere 🤠
We live in northern Wisconsin, and due to the issues with some of the local telecom providers we were in the area that did not have high-speed Internet, so we actually ended up using Starling for almost a year until we got our fiber optic. It was a game changer we could also pick it up and bring it to my in-laws who are also in the underserve area down in Southern Iowa. It’s truly a game changing technology.
Another great episode. Sierra is growing up. So fun to watch. How long before you start her on remote learning? Have you made a decision on the curriculum? Are you talking with other cruisers who have kids and what they liked and did not like? Can't wait for the "I'm growing up on a sailboat" episode.
Hi guys. What would we like to see, for you to cover? I think it's time for another slow TV episode, but this time maybe cover a complete day or two days, by taking a 5 or 10-minute clip here and there. Sunrise, from a vantage point on the far side of Delos. Sierra waking up and breakfasting. Quicktime morning view of boatlife from somewhere high up. Meal-planning based on what most needs eating; Lunch or dinner with the family. A 360 from outside, so we can look around the anchorage and spot what else is happening, if anything. A 2-minute statistical summary in mid afternoon, where Brian gives us a report on all the numbers he can find: the temperature, humidity, how long since it last rained; current reserves in the batteries, the diesel tank, the water tank, whatever; weather forecast for the next 3 days; outline of the top jobs on the repairs/maintenance list. A fly-on-the-wall look at Delos life in paradise.
Great video. Very informative! Thanks. Solar and Lithium are very much the way to go, and both keep improving. Another way to charge batteries is hydrogeneration, either with electric drive (acting as a generator) or a separate hydrogenerator. With hydrogeneration, you charge simply by sailing, so it's basically electricity from wind power.
4:58 For sailboats with lesser power systems, the 2 KW AC (alternating current) power requirement for a standard home electric water kettle might be a show-stopper. Many boats would be better-served by buying a smaller kettle with a lower power rating (ex 800 W AC), or better yet, a DC (direct current) kettle that will not be impacted by the efficiency loss that DC-to-AC inverters entail.
Very good information. I can relate a lot to this as we lived off grid in a cabin we built. We counted Watt hours and set up solar and all that. We had a well for shower water but collected rain water from the roof for drinking water. And, we only went shopping once a month or less so, we had a large pantry/storage room. Really good info that relates to off grid anywhere and experience helps a lot as I'm sure your situation has gotten lots better over time. It seems to work that way with experience.
A few years ago I mentioned that Amp Hours are not the best measurement compared to Watt Hours. Another tip... think of Solar as like Fog... if it gets too hot the Fog (energy) dissipates and you cannot harvest it off it's surface. So the efficiency is all about the back side of the panel staying cooler. The panels up in the air run cooler because of air flowing underneath. That might in part explain the difference in efficiency.
I love learning about all this stuff. It’s just fascinating and I’m a woman. I used to hang with my dad and then my brother and his friends and then my husband and just enjoy it all. My dad was a radio operator navigator Morse code guy back in the day Radio operator for 16 years for Panam and he could fix any radio or TV. Good stuff. ❤😊
Thanks for a well presented look under the hood at cruising near the upper end of the affluence spectrum. You have worked hard and chosen well to get to a much deserved level of comfort. I would only take issue to your "camping" reference. H.W. Tillman said "One cannot miss what one has not become accustomed to." His chosen simplicity came across more as living than camping which likely inspired many. Ditto the Pardeys' "go small, go now" attitude. Perspective derives from vantage point. I know your message is not meant to imply exclusivity, though some might read that into it. All i can say is that from my 35 years in this lifestyle the single root denominator required to carry on is the concrete will to get to the destination.
Delos the awsome boat i have bean following from start. And it maked me move to a holland steal houseboat ❤❤❤❤ How big of an lithium battery you have ??? I have 11.8kw of lithium VW e-golf pack in 24volt

Yes, I'm not a sailor, but I am intrigued by the lifestyle, mainly the freedom it seems to provide. First-hand info is better than just books
if you want to live on a boat it can be done fairly cheap with somewhat limited mechanical skills, if you want to live on a boat the way these people do you will need 1 enough time because fixing it will be your full time job 2 mechanical/technical knowledge to do so 3 massively deep pockets to afford to fix the boat
Your videos are not only inspiring and exciting, they are also very informational.
Happy New Year Delos Crew /Tribe! All the best to you all in 2024! Stay safe, keep well and fair winds and following seas!
That's one amazing boat! Wow just wow! I love keeping up with Delos and all of the changes over the years. What a happy life.
Good episode guys... so cute when Sierra was listening to Mom talk about dry food storage. And thanks for sharing all the information.
Not just listening, real world education going on there and the little sponge is absorbing..
IMO you three are able to do so because of Bryan's Ability and Skill in dealing with all the problems, not to take anything away from Kaza as it takes a woman's touch to make it all enjoyable and happy. Thanks "Guys" for sharing your lives with us. SAFE TRAVELS!
Thanks guys!! The best sailing channel on RUclips!!! I never miss an episode!
It is wonderful to see how much you two love each other and are good parents.
Yes, you skipped the black and Grey water systems, curious how it works. Great video and I would enjoy more details and contacts.
I've been on board for the last 5 years living the fantasy !
Hey guys, how about doing a video about the safety equipment you have on board.
It’s always fun getting updates from Delos !!
Fair winds⛵️
I have been filling my whole knowledge of off grid sailing in negativity to see if I still want to make this change. I still did after watching all those videos. And then I came across this video. This definitely confirmed me. I want this life. I'm ready to buy this year. All the negative stuff just needs to go now and fill my heart with what awaits in my future early retirement.
Thanks Brian and Kazza, this is great information. Of course we love seeing your adventures, but these types of videos convey a more intimate feel as if we were your neighbors. Please keep mixing these in with the rest!
You are a fun couple to watch, and as a father of five (all adults now), it's been amazing watching how quickly your daughter is growing up! You are a beautiful family!
Just a heads up guys, Better Help has been caught selling their clientels information on multiple occasions. Which seeing as they cater to people who are having mental health trouble, should be cause for great concern.

Just bought Florida sailboat access ocean home in 2015. Wanted to have a home base. Little later in life can rent out my home to fund my sailing excursions. Building up boat building knowledge and skills for my sailing dreams.
Great job on this one guys! We're hanging with Bill and Grace in Barra prepping for French Poly, so this one is well timed for us :)
This is one of your most interesting videos (even for the non sailors); thanks for sharing your views with us and best wishes to pursue your dreams
Awww, she's going into the heart melting stage.
The most adorable heart warming cuteness.
With my kids it was late 3s to 6-7.
All the best to you all & thanks for the entertainment and knowledge over the years.
So much ingenuity, amazing 😍
What work do you guys do online to live this lifestyle?
Nuggets triumph at the end always reminds me to hit like before it’s too late. Thanks guys for all the Beautiful videos over the years, They are so incredibly well done. It’s so fun seeing all of these AMAZING places you guys take us along to, I know it’s so much extra work…. but and we are all Grateful. Happy New Year! 🎉❤⛵️🥂 to another incredible year of adventures and good health !
Night Vision Monocular - Have you considered having one? They are very affordable now, a good Bushnell is less than $300us. Great for when you pull into an Anchorage at night... And nice to have when looking out for pirates 🎉
Very interesting technical setup 😎
My wife and I are booked to visit the Society Islands the first week of May (2024). After viewing your video of the area, we are busting at the seams to get there, as it looks amazing! Been watching for about 8 years and LOVE your channel. Sending good vibes from San Diego.
It is a very interesting video 😊
My Fridays are always brightened by watching the Delos family live the life, most of us will only ever dream of!
Cod Bless!!
Everybody's gangsta until appendicitis happens.
In this case you call a hellicopter ambulance and have insurance!
Jeez, you guys have turned into just Promo videos!
What do you mean?
@robinprice6879 I miss the good ole days when sailing channels sailed instead of promoting AG1, knives, Mud Water, Mental Health, or their books, sailing schools, knitted hats, jewelery, etc... Flea market infomercial. 😅
How much do you spend as a patron?
@@nooneanybodyknows7912 gotta pay the bills somehow. Have you contributed?
$$$$% that's all that matters. I hate spamming. This is the same thing.
Off Grid? LOL. What about all that canned food you keep on your boat? Did you guys grow that food and make the metal cans?
do you think they built the boat, too? People who grow their own food don't personally forge their shovels. They're obviously about as off grid as you can get.
off-grid
adjective
not using or depending on public utilities, especially the supply of electricity.
"off-grid housing"
adverb
without using or depending on public utilities, especially the supply of electricity.
"he has lived off-grid for 32 years"
@@matteframe nonsense. To be truly off-grid you need to live entirely off the land or sea without any dependancy on things made on the grid.
ok, Unabomber@@jamesrichards3086
@@parliamenthouseottawa Hey mister Dictionary adverb guy without diesel in their tanks they would be up shits creek without a paddle and so would everyone in the developed world.

Thanks so much for your support Nathaniel! We are so stoked to have you along on the journey with us! Hope the videos are bringing you lots of good vibes and inspiration 😁
Very interesting also for preppers 😁 I’m personally interested in what backup systems you have for the desalinator and in how you maintain it. Fair winds! 😎
Being married now 29 yrs with 6 kids, I love the love you both have for each other. Thank you for showing me some very interesting details about how it all works and comes together. Thank you, Brian and Kazza!
How do you manage the trash?
Fruit preservation: I read that if you rinse your fruit in a solution of 3 parts water and 1 part white vinegar it kills most of the surface bacteria on the fruit peel and will help keep it from spoiling for longer. Great info in this video, even for living off grid on land.
I’m working on becoming a sailor myself, in the next few years I plan on buying my first boat and learning to sail and also learning how to maintain them. I find your videos very educational and I hope you keep it going.
It's amazing that your fresh food can last as long as it does....and you must pray every day that your fridges and the freeze don't go kablooie.
We love BetterHelp! Happy & SAFE New Year.
Sierra is sure growing and so smart. Love that she was aware of your conversation and offered her insight. ♥
Good video Team Delos, keep up the great work!
freshly caught fish are a different beast to the 'fresh' fish you buy in stores imo.
Great show ... Like hearing about your boat and Its workings ... Always look forward to Fridays !...
Great content guys you are amazing. I have always wanted to sail around the world like you do. Greetings from Sweden Gothenburg… Tjena❤
Blue water wannabes not up to these challenges, sail at their peril.
i'm now 5min into the video and wow what a production effort. all the little animations the overlays! that's a lot of work, my highest appreciation!
I'm just starting to learn about sailing full-time and your explanations are spot on. Much thanks!
and...that's how it's done.
SLO…is Kewel…
One of our fav Delos episodes yet! So informational, yet not lacking at all in fun or charm. Thanks for getting this out for us yall!
Great content guys. Your production quality has improved. It shows how much effort went into this video. And thank you for no click bait drama.
Was that Kirel doing the ethylene voice-over? Nice touch!
I have been watching this channel for 9 years, and I cannot believe this channel does not have millions of subscribers...
I am 56 years old and I am mesmerized by this kind of life I love it I get every day more information about sailing ⛵️ thanks people like you ❤️👍
Very good information.
And it maked me move to a holland steal houseboat ❤❤❤❤
How big of an lithium battery you have ???
I have 11.8kw of lithium VW e-golf pack in 24volt
Love the videos. I hope you guys can do this for the rest of your lives!
