Thanks for watching! We are now preparing for the Northwest Passage this summer, sailing from Alaska to Greenland! I've just finished the project webpage: www.alluringarctic.com/ . The page will get updated as we go along. I will of course also be making a video series of the preparations and the passage itself. So stay tuned and bookmark the page to keep updated! :)

we are running critically low on topsoil and fossil water resources.
My Main Point has been that those african ships hauling livestock feed out of here have been as unregulated as their heroin.
farmers should not go Entirely by the market,
you should understand that here by now.
they should set a little more aside for forage, or just set aside.
but with forage, the compaction is minimal, and the animals really do help build it up.
      on the politics;
the folly of all humanity has been approaching subsaharans with reasoning, expecting the same results as normal people.
but Every Time someone does that, they are handing the subsaharans everything they need to know to figure out another way to continue without anyone finding out about it.
anyone telling them to stop just sends their minds strait into workarounds...they are not stupid, they are different intelligent...but They ARE NOT normal people.

My fiance and I lived on a 27ft sailboat and for a while it was very cold. We would have snow on our boat and iced up portholes. We wore lots of layers, had a nice down bag to sleep in, took bucket showers, and drank instant coffee as well. Not that we did it for nearly as long as you guys have but it gave me such an appreciation for what you guys do and I find it awesome. Although I'm not a big fan of the cold myself, I find the lifestyle you guys have so fascinating and you're one of the main sailing channels I watch most frequently. ❤️

Sohvi and Juho: I remember your episode, inspecting Lumi in Napa, California and thought, "my goodness, I wonder who designed this spacious 44ft sailboat"? You both have turned her into a picture of function and one of a tidy, cozy Alaskan hideaway on the water. We love the carpet Sohvi designed on the cabin floor, the diesel heat, the galley arrangement, etc.. The aft dining room area with all the seating or Sohvi's space is awesome, truly a lovely area for inviting friends or relaxing with a good book. We haven't heard from you for a while and were concerned that the Alaskan winters had taken their toll. Wishing you a safe and beautiful passage through the Northwest Passage. Before Valdez opened up the Pipeline, Exxon ran an icebreaker bow Tanker through this passage, studying the feasibility of crude oil transport. I happened to have been the Third Mate on this passage and later ran the Valdez to Long Beach run with ARCO Marine, Inc.. We can't wait for your coming episodes and want to thank you both again for making us welcome in your cozy and comfortable Home.

I grew up in the USA, but further north than about 1/3 of the population of Canada. Then I moved to the Colorado mountains, so I know what is required to safely survive in the north-country. So when you were prepping the boat in California I was concerned that you simply had insufficient room to stow everything you needed in order to maintain and operate the boat in polar wintertime, as well as carry along all of your gear for your various hobbies, and of course your filming equipment, batteries, accessories and food supplies. Then there was the matter of supplies for employment, and boat parts, tools, and emergency back-ups simply because you are often far from boat supply shops. I found myself adding it all up in my head and it made me concerned that you might be forced to make some compromises that could affect your safety. However, I noted that you very carefully chose your clothing and bedding, and got only the highest quality gear, such as the HH garments. They made real sense. If you don't have room to stow a wide variety of clothing, then get the best, garments of exceptional quality materials and construction that won't fail at the first inconvenient time, and that are adjustable for a wide variety of conditions. As I watch your day to day lives I note many of the small things and careful choices you've made to be certain that you are up to the challenges of your winter sailing environment. Yes, your boat looks 'lived in', but I know you can explain why you have every single thing on your boat, why it is where it is, and the other uses it could be put to if needed. For instance, those who don't fully understand your environment probably wonder why your sleeping bags are sitting out loose, not compressed and stuffed tightly into stuff bags. As for me, if I saw they were compressed and stuffed into bags I would wonder if you really knew what you were doing. But I'm quite certain you do, and I watch the small things you do for tips that I can use in similar circumstances. Enjoy.

Also if you are enjoying instant coffee, do not try fresh ground. Like most things once you sample the better alternative, it is hard to enjoy the other and then you will have to add more items to the boat.
winter toys/gear take up alot of room, no way around it.

    Suggestion for Floor heating.
Get a piece of 4 inch PVC or metal duct and mount it next to the diesel heater with a 90 degree fitting at the floor end to draw the floors cold air from areas away from the heater. At the top of the vertical PVC pipe another 90 degree fitting that will that will fit right up against the fan and draw the cold air from the floor through the pipe. You may have to get a 6 inch to 4 inch PVC reducer and the 6 inch side should fit around the fan blade to take only the air from the pipe. Your best bet would to purchase another thermal electric fan and mount that on the heaters exhaust pipe. You will be pleasantly surprised how the floor area will warm up because you are now heating the coldest air on the boat and not just reheating the already warm air in the higher area of the boat waiting for the heat to slowly if ever move down. Your hot water bottles should be a thing of the past. You could just purchase the 4 inch PVC (2) 90 degree and (1) 4 to 6 inch reducer fittings and test it with an existing fan. Or just start out with a 6 inch PVC setup... more air less resistance.

Very practical set up. Love it. Especially the centerboard, large seating capacity, water tight hatchway and aluminum cockpit/dog house.

Thank you for the tour of your boat. I like the covered cockpit as a place to change out of wet gear. The diesel stove looks warm and cozy but the hot water bottles are the best!! Thank you for all you do to share winter adventures in Alaska. I live near Seattle Washington USA.

Love stern cabin sitting area! Added benefit is excellent access to engine compartment. Don’t know how you get by without proper shower in head.

Beautiful boat. I like the idea of the saloon in the back, cozy. A kimberly woodstove be nice instead of burnin up your fuel, or in addition to an Espar in the saloon?? Must be an abundance of dead standing beetle killed SPF up there... certainly is in British Columbia

I had to stop by and leave you a comment because I’ve been watching your videos. What you are doing is absolutely amazing and I really love how you present your videos and carry yourself. God bless hope to see you on the water one of these days, but I stay in the tropics.

I just discovered you guys. I love these sailing videos. So much better than some of the others who just film themselves on the beach. This is real and i appreciate how you give explanations and reasonings to things. Keep it up.

    Looks loverly and Cosy.
Have you seen the Chefs Crocks? They have a better non slip under surface, they are dark underneath and so not mark the deck.they are definitely better at preventing slips etc,

I love the concept of "modified IKEA carpets" for cold floors. That could be a "thing" 😅❤
    Amazing as always!

Thanks for the tour. She's a great boat. Perhaps you could get some proper insulation for the floors, I'm sure that would help make things more comfortable. I guess the problem with a shower inside the boat is the condensation, cockpit showering is very chilly!

Would love a video that focuses on provisioning, the kitchen, what is there now, what is working, what you have planned for the future, what you do for food storage, the length of time you provision for, what provisioning looks like in AK (where do you shop? will you use online purchases?), how you're thinking about provisioning for your Northwest Passage trip (will you go into Anchorage?). Thanks!

That is really good use of those stove fans, three must move a good amount of air around.

Have you considered moccasin slippers or shearling boot liners or mukluks? Animal hides work best for keeping your feet warm in these kinds of conditions, but if you're vegan then a real rubber sole (not plastic) is a good second-best option. Please stay warm, and enjoy your trip!
