When I farmed I had a 2-71 in an Allis Chalmers HD5G bulldozer. It was a 1954 and we got it in early 1971 after I got home from Vietnam in the fall of 1970. So it was 16 years old and the engine had never had the head off. Summer or winter, it took a shot of starting fluid in the air intake to start. About 1976, we had to have it overhauled. It got the newer "high ring" pistons and after that it started without starting fluid as long as the temperature was above 20 degrees F. I am not sure what was :high" about the "high-ring" pistons, since there were rings both below and above the wrist pin on these, but it made a difference. In the army, I was a postal clerk at the APO in Rio de Janeiro but got a chance to help a U.S. Navy machinists mate tear down a V16-71 that was a gen set for the big NAVCOMTECHGROUP Rio navy radio station co-located with the Brazilian navy. It covered all of the South Atlantic and well beyond. The navy guy was a patient teacher with an 18-year old farm boy and I learned a lot. He was happy to have help. No air wrenches and there were a lot of bolts to get loose. It had two V-8-71 blocks bolted together and onto a common frame and we tore it down to that. You have to have a lot of space to lay out that many parts and keep them all sorted out. He had a system. The 71 series was an amazing feat of engineering. C
I used to operate the old 72-31B in Northern Ireland (50 Cal proof Armoured Cab) when I served in the Forces. That Detroit Diesel used to go down a right hit at 3 am in a built up area when clearing barricades of burning cars and Buses. A lot of Military Vehicles were targets for missiles and stones but funnily enough no one used to come near the Terex when she was in full voice munching through car engine blocks for breakfast in her 4 in 1 bucket. Happy days.
Detroits start better cold when you pull the kill on them FIRST... get it spinning, then let the Kill go back in, adding a little fuel at a time...the rack is wide open when starting, and pumps a LOT of fuel in... less fuel plus compression gives a little heat.. not enough to run.. but warms the cylinder.. Ether wipes out the top ring killing compression...
Works really well. I don't know why someone didn't clue me in on this trick a long time ago, but cranking with the fuel off and adding it in slowly makes all the difference. I don't spend a lot of time around Detroits, but the trick is great getting old loaders/backhoes started in winter that don't have grid heaters or glow plugs.
I have to do that with my old fordson major due to a lazy starter when warm im not sure on easy start killing the top ring as my major had been on easy start with it previous owner and had broke 2 pistons between the lower 2 compression rings
When I worked at a gravel pit ,getting everything started in mornings was a job. We had good luck putting a Gasoline soaked rag over the air cleaner intake. Most things would fire up a lot easier. Be Careful once those battery terminals get hot ,it is easy to Blow up a battery. Seen battery box lids get bent bad on some blow ups.
An idea if you wanna go cheap. Remove air filter. Get a helper to hold a lit propane torch in the intake and crank. I got the idea from an old m35a2 I had. Works wonders in colder weather.
I bet those 24v batteries aren't cheap. Spinning them fast sure helps on those cold days. Slow crank usually equals no start on my older diesels. Thanks for the vid. Detroit diesels are sweet
Keep the batteries set up as a 24v and swap out the 24v starter for a 12v starter and it will wing over that motor 2-3 times faster resulting it in starting up almost right away with a lot less cranking Its what my buddy did with his and now it starts with no problems and its still going strong after over a year of use
KAT makes tank-type recirculating heaters that'll keep them warm. I very good idea is a couple of pan heaters and battery blankets. I live in Bethel, Alaska and own a 2001 Dodge 2500 4x4 with the v-10. I have a 1500W recirculating heater, 150W engine oil pan heater, 150W transmission pan heater, 100W battery blanket, and a 25W strip heater on the power steering fluid reservoir. Lastly a trickle charger for the battery. Yes it sucks the juice, but the truck always starts easily even when it is -30* F.
u put a charger on the batteries half an hour before you try to start .you get a propane turkey fryer ,and position it safely under the oil pan for 15 min .then it will turnover faster .
See if there is a way to rig up an oil heater, put a T fitting on the drain plug, and another near the oil filler, you run a hose to an electric oil heater/pump, keep the oil at 38C/100F and that baby will kick over better then a gasser.
You missed your window, you needed that starting fluid right away. Remove the plug on the air horn and spray right into the blower. It would have started right up.
You don't have a bloody clue as to how to start a diesel in freezing weather, get a bit of rag tied to a length of fencing wire dip in the fuel tank set it alight and hold it over the air intake and hey presto away you go. I have been doing this for sixty years saved a lot of batteries and starter motors.
These things were designed by women, if you don't touch it the right way, it will be difficult. like usual andy you win again :). going to get some more of the Canada catalyst stuff soon from you when its available Aaron
Burnt one of the terminals off one of my lorry batteries but managed to build the post back up with a soldering iron and solder and then file to shape!
Yessir,..you have to have the battery power available for longer than that to spin those 2-stroke General Motors/Detroit Diesel engines for cold starts. Now where'd I put my hearing protectors?? LOL!
On cold days like that put a handheld propane torch Flame into the air breather what a handheld propane torch flame into the air brother to get warm air into the intake it will start a whole lot easier
Engine heaters are fine if you have a generator nearby. The smart thing to do is install the engine heater when the weather is a lot warmer. One would have to make a permanent box on each piece of equipment to keep the generator in or someone would come along and steal it big time.
There seem to be so many different theories on cold starting a Detriot 2 stroke, I saw a dipshit one time cold started a Terex dozer obviously with a Detroit and as soon as it fired he opened the engine wide open and said THAT is the way to warm up a Detroit!
The modern cold start of a diesel engine. You can just crank that starter motor and crank it without worrying about burning it up killing the battery in a cold start.
Hell yea had a v12 air cooled one sarted in -10 f with wind chills of - 15 it started way easyier then the cats or John deers the Detroit i wouldn't even both some days there was no way it would go
That's a Detroit diesel engine and they are a pain in the ass to start when its cold outside. Love the sound of her when she did start too bad you made the video to short.
Yup, I had the same machine and those 2 stokes smoked white when cold like a banshee. And, get this, mine burnt off the battery cable as well. @@chadmartfeld
Trick iPhone for starting old diesel in place of starting fluid or use WD-40 it's not as volatile and also lubricate the top of the piston Orcherel real well I've been doing it for years

That's an interesting concept. Might have to try it some time
I had an old crane, lower moter was a 6-71... didnt like the cold, but it would start at 20F without the block heater...

Fuel entering the cylinder would rob heat for sure if its not being ignited... I'll have to try this out when I get a chance, thanks.

Andy rig up an additional air intake on the terex that will accept a hair dryer. Turn on the dryer to help it start pn the cold days.
thats funny but it is a good idea

He said, " When it is cold out that is usually when it does the best cold starts" Who would have ever guessed that!!
NOT ME!!
I hate to bust your bubbles boys, but get those battery cables in order. The ol guy says so.
That starter moves like a champ when it's getting the juice. Love watching those smokey 2 stroke cold starts!
install a block heater its not to difficult on those engines, they start great when you use a block heater
lljegs can't on a 2 stroke Detroit
clay tullos it can be done pretty easily actually, on any engine including detroits
starting fluid doesn't hurt older engines as long as you don't over do it little hard to with this cheap either they have now days

Its not as bad as you would think keep in mind a 24v system has two 12v battery's..
both 12 volt batteries are 1000 cca for this 24 volt system.
Keep the batteries set up as a 24v and swap out the 24v starter for a 12v starter and it will wing over that motor 2-3 times faster resulting it in starting up almost right away with a lot less cranking

Sounds like she could use a rebuild... Had plenty of speed, if a detroit isn't making enough heat due to compression loss, you'll get this behavior...
USMC 75 -80. All Terex HE. Detroit powered generators. All started in the cold just fine.

Officially addicted to ether!!
You can get help for that issue. Rehab, but a good rehab program is the key
You are cranking your battery to empty of charge. I'd be looking into the fuel suppy...looks like too much to me.
you can still get the block heaters for the old Detroits . We have on the farm trucks , works slick .
It's a GM put some descent battery power in it to spin it over quicker and they start so easily even in the cold
Block heaters save so many batteries and starter. But guy, why crank the batteries all the way down before giving it a snort of ether?
Ether is horrible for CI engines.. ever have heard of ether predetination destroying a diesel engine?
They say the engine's can get addicted to ether and not so much wd40....
Put kerosene in the tank while cold weather. It dosent turn to jelly like diesel does.
-7 degrees celsius?! i Started our old Scania 141 V8 in -42 degrees..Just so u know
Your Scania probably has glow plugs and was also likely designed to operate in cold climates.
@@huntsbychainsaw5986 If something is sold in Canada, it better be suited to cold climates (although -7°C is not cold at all).

GOOD ONE
diesel needs to be vaporized to burn, if im correct
Derek Brown it needs to me compressed or really hot
Derek Brown actually, it needs to be atomized, it's not the vapors that ignite, it's the fuel.
Joe Godfrey well yeah that's what I was meaning, the fuel particles need to be spread out to ignite
Zero emissions vehicle!

Turns over really fast for such a cold engine - All European trucks have 24V starter systems = no problems starting in the cold

Keep it cranking..... don't stop it over and over that's not how you start a cold diesel
The modern cold start of a diesel engine. You can just crank that starter motor and crank it without worrying about burning it up killing the battery in a cold start.
Jump start off your car or pick up truck..way better than starting fluid!
I have the same loader, bought a block heater for it off eBay. Haven’t installed it yet. Also bought an ether start system.

replaced the injectors last year. the machine runs on 60 / 40 waste engine oil filtered to 0.5 micron

No glow plug? How does the diesel ignite?
Glow plugs are to preheat the cylinders. All diesels use compression ignition, except for semi-diesels of course that use a hot bulb ignition system!
