    I worked on a tow boat with two of these on the Mississippi River in the USA. I was a deckhand and we slept in rooms that were next to them on the next level. When you first got on you couldn't sleep because of them and after a couple of days if they shut down you would instantly wake up.

      It is amazing what we can become "used to" and ignore. I afraid the rising generation knows nothing about tolerating accomodating and moving on. I used work for the US Forest Service many years ago. When fire fighting we did what had to be done when it needed to be done. Sometimes that meant being up for more than 24 hours working. Not fun not desirable but sutuation required a couple times.

    it is not like small engines where you let off the start, when the engine starts. On these big diesels, you have to keep your hand on start, till the oil pressure overrides the stop cycle, it does not keep the starter engaged, like on smaller engines.

      They pick up fast on cold starts as Detroit 2 strokes run anti friction bearing on very hardened 4340 chrome moly nickel alloy rods and crankshaft. It’s harder than skidoos 850 rotax etec turbo crankshaft most likely. I got an 8v92 2 stroke turbo I’m currently running 6 gallons of BRP XD-100 Evinrude synthetic oil I get from Walmart. She purrs like a kitten on it. I pull off from the gear VRO pump to a mixing valve I pumped to tge fuel line to burn it off gradually and I dump I’m more XD-100. That’s stuff works great and burns cleaner too. She runs quieter and cooler with a bit more power now. I cut in sons amsoil interceptor a gallon and it’s flawless. I’m gonna give castor 927 maxima a try next if I can get enough of it.

      They are on the tug boat I work on now! It’s got 1200 rpm 6-71 80kw w/kato alternators. I saw a skidoo at a dealer with 850 rotax etec turbo, at just above idle at 1200 it sounded like a 4-53 at 1200. When I was a kid I got a used John Deere JDX8 with CCW 440 in it and it leaked oil out the clutch side, I ran 40:1 w Castro GTC 10w40. I’m running Mobil 410 I got off a boat at 50:1 in my Stihl fs-240 brush cutter 40:1 in lawn boy duraforce. They run great on that ad it’s tge same 2 stroke oil for the emd 645

      Normally I would agree but Detroit's are fine to rev the piss out of just after oil pressure comes up. I won't try and say you increase engine life like that but many of these gensets start and go right to high idle... and they last for years nonetheless

    • @johncox1983
      @johncox1983 5 лет назад +14

      They are designed to do this. They have oil warmers and electric circulation pumps so they can be started quickly in case of emergency. Unless they are taken out of service for long periods. Hospitals and nursing homes need these generators to go from 0 rpm to full throttle quickly because every second they spend down during emergencies the more lives could perish.

    • @johncox1983
      @johncox1983 5 лет назад +4

      And full throttle on that thing isn't more than 3000 rpm. Its 2 stroke so it sounds like 6000 rpm but not.

    • @bengerlach9958
      @bengerlach9958 5 лет назад

      It will be fine. As long as the oil is there and it doesn't get above its rated speed. They warm up rather fast too. Just look at the big bus 747. Same engine and the radiator is massive

      Four turbos, not just two. This is the TIB variant with the bypass blowers. The 16v149 is really just two 8v149s mounted front to back, each one is a twin turbo single blower engine so the resulting beast is quad/twin.
      If you look really carefully between the air cleaners (the two black cans on each side of the engine) you'll probably be able to see them. Each air cleaner goes to one turbo compressor inlet.

      They use them for hospitals too. We had 8 of them for the hospital where I grew up. They powered all the rooms and they were very fast starting. If the power became unstable they would start and go full throttle to keep power stable automatically. I was near one when it fired up one time. I loaded up my pants because I wasn't expecting it.

      So would tge Polaris patriot 850 turbo khaos sled. That sled is luge a little Detroit 2 stroke turbo on steroids! I like the jimmy sound of tge rotax 850 etec turbo skidoo at 1200 rpm above idle. It sounds like tge 6-71 2 stroke generator motor on the tug I now work on. It’s got 8-645 EMDtfat start real easy.

    Love how these things scream, I'd bet that engine never went above 900rpm in the video even though it sounds like it's in full runaway mode... Now THERE is a thought, WTF would one of these sound like if it did run away and hit something like 4k rpm? my pants are nearly turning brown at the mere thought of hearing that!

    • @bengerlach9958
      @bengerlach9958 5 лет назад +2

      Rated rpm for the big bus 747 which is a v16 detroit like this one is about 2200 rpm. At least that is where they ran it at. All it is though is two v8 Detroit diesels slapped together to make a mega diesel

    • @chrisbanning413

    • @pootispiker2866

      This engine is governed to 1800 RPM, no more and no less. It has a speed limiter governor, not a variable speed one. A runaway 8v92 will start floating valves at 2400-2600 RPM, and will probably throw a rod after a few seconds at 2900. They would get no where near 4000 RPM
