Redfish Fishing with Ladyfish - Does it Work as Cut Bait?

  • In this video, I wanted to test using ladyfish as cut bait to catch redfish. Fishing with cut bait is a popular technique to catch redfish around the Tampa Bay area, especially around mangrove roots at high tide. Many people swear by ladyfish as being the best bait, but I've never had much luck using them in the past. After striking out on catching big jacks and tarpon in a pass, I decided to catch ladyfish instead and test if it really works as cut bait.

    When catching a ladyfish. If you keep the rod tip low to the water they're less likely to jump and when the do breach reel faster and gently sweep the rod tip back keeping the tip as low as possible. You're success rate will increase incredibly!

      Dude, when I was a kid we called ladyfish "poor mans tarpon". They have hard bony mouths, just like tarpon.

    Nice work! I love fishing the cut ladies. They get a bit mushy when they thaw, but when I can catch a bunch I'll chunk them up and keep them in a plastic container in my freezer for days when I don't have bait. All my best reds have come on cut ladies on the flats behind schools of mullet. I think the bigger reds prefer to eat the baitfish but can't resist an easy chunk of cut lady when they come by it. Also, monster snook love those little live ones! Another great video.

    2 tips use a bigger circle use a 4-0 - 5-0 for cutbait reds that small circle is good for live bait but with a bigger hook you better your chances on a big fish and you can take the splitshot weight off to make the bait feel weightless to the fish

    Hey man, just picked up my first boat. A Hewes Bonefisher! Just got into inshore fishing around the bay. Question for ya, is the trolling motor used to move down the mangroves with the current quietly? Do you drop your power pole once you hit the honeypot?

    • @SeeYaDude
      @SeeYaDude  4 года назад +3

      You pretty much nailed it. I use my trolling motor for moving around no motor zones and for approaching spots quietly. When I reach the spot, I position myself with the trolling motor in way where the wind will push the bow of the boat toward the spot while the powerpole is anchored down. If your trolling motor has an "anchor" or "spot lock" feature then that can be very useful when trying to hold the boat in water deeper than the powerpole will go

    • @SeeYaDude
      @SeeYaDude  4 года назад +2

      I love the Arkansas Glow color, but in dark muddy water I recommend the Rootbeer color. Darker baits give a better silhouette in darker water to make it easier for the fish to see. And then as far as fishing try doing long casts, work the bait slowly and fish around structure or areas that you've caught fish in the past

    Sorry you had to recommend ladyfish as good bait...you got on to 'em when they were hungry. Most days you'll fight crabs for bottom rights with any cut bait but if you must, mullet is the best for cut bait...If you just like the adventure catch a few 2 or 3 inch pinfish.(in Tampa Bay the edge of the Middle Ground flats is a good place to get any bait. Between Gandy Bridge and Picknick Island. The flats all around there are primo fishing.

      Was told by an old timer to cut it into long strips so it has a little action in the water. Worked perfect

    The bigger the chunk, the bigger the red. And bloody chunks work best. Cut each lady fish into four or five pieces and use the head.

      I’ve heard of people catching some monster snook on both live and cut ladyfish, but I’ve never had any luck with that

    I've got a rule on my boat. You hook a ladyfish that nasty thing does not come in the boat.
