Prince first became popular when I was in 6th grade. This was 1983. For us in 6th grade, MUSIC WAS EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!🔴😎 We we're sooooooooooooooooooooooo into Prince, Motley Crue & Twisted Sister. Fact🔴😎
I agree with your Mozart comment. He was an absolute genius musically and at a very young age. I don't think we will ever fully understand just how genius he was, because he was from a different planet altogether. We are too dumb to understand. He played every instrument and his composing skills are off the charts. Just so many things to talk about with him. His death was crushing and untimely and devastating to musicians all over the world.
It's not "the elevator". It is "de-elevator". The song was a Christian rock song. Most of us realize it until much later in his career that Prince was a very spiritual person and many of his songs had veiled Christian imagery.
@@whumanbard not sure Prince would want his songs categorized as Christian rock... he was very peculiar about that sort of thing regarding religious labeling, but you're not wrong. Same thing with his song I Would Die 4 U. Spirituality is referenced in a lot of his songs, in a "coded" way.
@@scapito , apparently you don't know that he had a song called God around the same time. Also in the song Controversy he had the Lord's Prayer in it. He became a practicing Jehovah's Witness as well. I could go on and on, but any true fan of Prince knows this despite you saying that it isn't true. Just because you might have disagreements with practicing religion doesn't make you a better or enlightened person than those who believe/practice differently than you, anymore than someone who is vegan or an ominvore. Your feelings can be respected, but it doesn't change the facts.
Watch Prince's performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honoring George Harrison. "My Guitar Gently Weeps" is played by Petty, Dany Harrison and other notables. It is AWSOME.
Prince ruled the 80’s like nobody else and that is saying ALOT because that decade has so many heavy hitters. He is a song writer including writing hit songs for other artists and protoge’s, can play any instrument- he played all 27 instruments on his first album, and his persona is as big as an icon.
Yeah, the 80s gave us an embarrassment of riches when it comes to music. And people wonder why GenX slams today's music. It's because it just seem lame, one-note, and milquetoast, compared to the awesomeness we grew up with. Then again, how do you top the 80s?
I was lucky enough to have cool parents, and at 14 they took me and 2 of my friends to the concert in Detroit where it was sold out for 7 nights in a row. Yes - you read that correctly- 7 nights JUST in Detroit. It was... well, I'm not sure there are words. I have pictures - actual pictures from my Dads 35mm camera he snuck into Joe Louis Arena. Orgasmic. There. Thats the word I was searching for 😂(Prince would appreciate and smile at that word, I'm positive!) There is footage of an entire concert of this Purple Rain tour. I've had it on DVD for years and its an absolute must for you to watch. I think there is at least some of it on RUclips. Its taped from the show in Syracuse, NY, I believe and is the best representation of him and his band in their prime and the height of their popularity. That tour show will show you his full range of talent. And - you must see the movie too! If you loved this, you'll love the rest ❤
The official video actually cuts the full song down a bit, as the song opens the film Purple Rain, and the song breaks for little cutaway moments to introduce characters and finally culminates into the end of the song. WATCH THE MOVIE!!!! One of the best rock and roll movies ever made!!! Some of the live performances in the film by Prince, Morris Day and the Time (especially Jungle Love, written by Prince), and others...are amazing and worth seeing it!
Yes! It was electrifying, gorgeous and moving. I've watched it a dozen times or more and it still gives me that feeling of awe. And gratitude that we had him among us, even for just a little while.
Prince's performance of Purple Rain at the AMA's (1985) was amazing, too. The movie was just out and he blew the back wall down. The last three minutes alone are the stuff of legend. The audience went from being almost amused by him and the Revolution to one of the most spontaneous, organic standing ovations you'll ever see. It still makes me cry a little.
I was so blessed to see this genius live in Toronto during his Purple Rain tour. It has to be the best concert I have ever seen & I have seen many. I was absolutely mesmerized. There is no-one like Prince, he is in a class of music all his own. I am so grateful to have had the experience. Miss him much.
This song just gives you a glimpse of how great a guitar player Prince was. Check out the tribute performance to George Harrison from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. So many legends and prince stole the show with his guitar playing.

Minneapolis had such an awesome music scene back in the 80s with Prince at the center. I was in college near there back then and often spent weekends in the Twin Cities. First Avenue was the club in downtown Minneapolis where Purple Rain was filmed. Had so much fun there! Great city, great memories.
So blessed to have seen His Purple Majesty twice here in Australia - the first time he ever toured here with the NPG on the “Diamonds & Pearls” tour & the last time on the “Welcome to …” tour. He was a genius.
When my HS boyfriend and I went to see Purple Rain, I was a bit nervous as he had very conservative taste in music. We didn't speak though the whole film, but walking out of the theatre he turned to me and said: "Let's keep going to that movie until we're SICK OF IT!" He loved it.
This is indeed a great tune. Glad you enjoyed it. Not surprised that you hadn't heard this one before. Radio is so different. You don't just call up and request a song and have it played anymore. And I know on You Tube Prince's material was constantly being taken down due to copywrite issues. It took me years to find a video of Raspberry Beret of any quality.

The first time I heard this song was in the car on a Friday night driving the three-hour trip to the beach for the weekend. Four college friends having a blast. The song was so perfect I’m remembering it 40 years later.
Great reaction. You should check out the album version of Let's Go Crazy as well. Prince's GREAT monologue is cut off and the song itself in the video version is truncated. Trust me. It's worth it.
Thanks Salvo... glad to see you enjoying this song as much as I do... Queen (and Freddie) gave us new music last year... the Beatles came up with new music this year (John Lennon)... how soon can we see more Prince music?? His family inherited an entire catalog of thousands of unpublished music... will the world ever get to experience more of his magnificence?? blessings.
Wish we could take you back in time to a club scene with this song rocking the room. The lights, sound and dance floor jam packed with Prince fans-a great time to be alive 💜🔥
Also just to note that Prince plays those sick solos while jumping around on stage in heels. Legend. Yeah he shreds like crazy. Legend! (also he wore some sick kicks, my wife is obsessed with his heels and I gotta admit they are basically art pieces, every one. I mean his whole sense of style and swagger was just immaculate. Legend seems understated at this point)
Thanks for reacting to Prince. Everything he does is intentional and particular and wow, what a musical genius, and that bassline. I could tell you were listening to that part. Thank you again!
You will definitely appreciate the 12” dance version. In the 80’s lots of artists put out extended dance mixes of their songs for the dance clubs. The 7:35 mix is the best version of Let’s Go Crazy.
Salvo, I truly can not believe you have never heard this song!!!!!! I'm sure you will listen to it over and over again, it's creative artistry at its best!! Enjoy, I did all those years ago❤️❤️
So happy to see you back to Prince!!! This album is legendary. Every song is amazing. I highly recommend that you check out live performances of Prince. He takes it to a whole other level (how is that possible?). Some of my recommendations are Purple Rain (from the Syracuse performance during the Purple Rain tour or 1985 American Music Awards), live version of America (super fun and funky and he plays drums at one point), Piano Medley from the Lovesexy Tour (shows that he’s not just brilliant on guitar, but piano, too), anything from the Glam Slam Show (I love Nothing Compares 2 U with Rosie Gaines or Thieves in the Temple/It), Baby I’m a Star (live version from Purple Rain tour), Play that Funky Music/Hollywood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage (just lots of fun during the 3rd or 4th encore and he plays bass on this one), and Motherless Child (great guitar and P directing his band the whole time). There are way too many songs to recommend. I really hope you’ll continue down the Prince rabbit hole. He is the best to ever do it 💜💜💜
Can you believe that when I was younger (so much younger than today!)😅. I wasn't very keen on Prince 😮(I know!) But now... I think he's great. Back then (70s & 80s) I hated heavy metal/rock bands. But now... I think they're great. And it's all thanks to reaction channels like yourself & a few others, so for that I thank you so so much, you have all opened my eyes, ears & heart to "tons" of wonderful (&sometimes wierd!) music. ❤🎼🎶
I’m 56 and when I was a young teen I saw Prince in concert ( purple rain tour) He came back the next night for encore Birmingham Alabama To this day I can still say that was by far best show I ever went to!!🙌🙌🙌❤️✌🏼
Two number ones and multiple other hits. This album is top 10-20 all time, I think. This song has so much energy it's almost unfair. It would be easy to picture Prince playing guitar for an 80s metal band with his shredding skills.
Prince was pure genius! I'd be repeating what others have mentioned, but there's many great songs you need to check out that have been mentioned, especially off of Purple Rain (and as mentioned, check out the movie!!). That video (and movie) were all filmed in Minneapolis and around there, which is where he was from. His performances (and there were others in the movie) were filmed at First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. R.I.P Prince!!
He was such a sexy little mofo. Don't let the heels and crazy outfits distract you, he was an absolutely amazing musician, lyricist and guitarist. My favorite random Prince tidbit is that he was a huge Joni Mitchell fan and they were friendly. I was so lucky to be a young person during this musical era.
Yeah, I will never forget the night I first heard this song and "discovered" Prince -- or came to understand his awesomeness. I was getting a ride home from one of my co-workers (we worked at a restaurant together) and he drove a really crappy car but the stereo system was banging. At the time, I was big into Prog Rock (see Rush), New Wave/Punk, and I had a background in The Beatles/Zeppelin/The Who and stuff like that. Well, he put on Purple Rain and I got my ass handed to me! I could not believe the guitar work and the production! Between Prince, INXS, U2, Madonna, and bands like The Simple MInds, my New Wave/Dance/Funk journey had begun! The 80's were an incredible decade for me and Prince was a huge part of that.
Oh he was amazing. There is a video of his performance at First Ave of Purple Rain that will truly blow your mind. It is an extended version of the song and to listen to his guitar solo you will never be the same.
The album, movie and tour were HUGE and I was lucky enough to see the movie when it came to theaters, own the album and most important of all me and my wife got to see this musical genius with the Revolution on the tour in Atlanta 1985!
This is Prince’s most successful album…he won all the Grammy’s for this album AND HE WON THE OSCAR FOR Best Original Score in 1985 for the film Purple Rain.
As someone who had the very fortunate opportunity to be at the #1 rated Super Bowl halftime show featuring Prince, I highly recommend you watch it. It was something spiritual when it started raining when Prince sang “Purple Rain”.
💜Yep. My favorite Prince tune. He is such an under appreciated guitarists. He shreds it at the end here like the He was born doing this......and maybe he was😊 You were very musically deprived as a child but it is not too late.

More Prince yasss 💜
And this is why I always called him the Jim Hendricks of the 80s. No other guitar player can match Prince's greatness and power
Love watching people get dumbfounded by this then break into a smile
Oh he was amazing. There is a video of his performance at First Ave of Purple Rain that will truly blow your mind. It is an extended version of the song and to listen to his guitar solo you will never be the same.
The whole album is great. Take Me With U is as pure a love song as you'll ever hear. Check it out.
The album, movie and tour were HUGE and I was lucky enough to see the movie when it came to theaters, own the album and most important of all me and my wife got to see this musical genius with the Revolution on the tour in Atlanta 1985!
Love your reaction! It’s rarely mentioned that he won The Oscar for Best Original Song Score for Purple Rain in 1985. PRINCE ❤
I'm telling ya- "I Would Die 4U". Banger.
Imagine hearing in it a theater for the 1st time...AHH MAZING!!
The movie was surprisingly pretty good !
Prince masters 9 instruments including the electric guitar. Great song. Good reaction. Prince is one of my all-time favorite male artist. 🎉🎉🎉
This is Prince’s most successful album…he won all the Grammy’s for this album AND HE WON THE OSCAR FOR Best Original Score in 1985 for the film Purple Rain.
Prince was the soundtrack to my college years in the early 1980's. Oh the times we had clubbing in Minneapolis....
Pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I went to the Purple Rain concert many years ago. 💜
