Great vid, helped me sort the same issue with my own car. My motor had spun too far also. However I just used a screwdriver and turned it one click clockwise and it lined up perfect again. No need to buy a new motor 👍
I have the same issue & almost did this very thing but it has some serious resistance, I feel like if I force a turn it's going to break. Is it a gear inside that actually "clicks" when you turn it??
@@ThatKa5p3r same, I did put it back in place without suing the metal guard because it limits your range of motion.. I played with the angles and then once it hooks I push it back into the place it should be. Lot of resistance but the screws will hold it in place. Hopeing it will finds its place again and I can put the metal guard eventually.
Hi I see my clip is also broken however actuator went too far, I mean it tried to open/close valve too much and clip broke. Do I need to buy new clip and actuator ? or I can just adjust this actuator ?
Hi. Does anybody know how i can check is the actuator is really working? The flap is always closed (didn't check it while driving' but on my M135i was opening half minute after start-up). I connected it to a 12v car battery, but nothing happened. The car is an Active Tourer 225i. Thanks
Hi all i have Dinan exhaust free flow on my X5M 2017, when i put it on sports plus, the right valve is opening but left isnt do you guys know whats the reason for it😑 i went for brake fluid flush at the dealership actually.
I have a f32 440i, had a similar issue, replaced the clip and the rattle stopped for a week, but now the rattle is back worse than before. . I'm wondering if I need a new actuator 😞
Hi, thanks for sharing this video. I have the exact same issue. Do you have the name or producr code of the motor? Where can I get it from online shop for a cheaper price?
So, a question.. I've a m235i. Wanting a bit more classy noise, I brought a brand new mperformance back box.. I've also had the car stage 2 tuned with a cold start delete. I can use bimmerlink to open and close the valve but the car always leaves the valve open.. never closes in eco or comfort just pure noise. I want quiet too! So wheres the issue.. the exhaust backbox swap or the tuning/coding of cold start delete. The valve does work manually with bimmerlink but not with eco/comfort/sport/sport+ who on earth has any ideas... thanks guys!!
@@MDrives thanks for letting me know , im having issue with mine it went to bmw 3x now they have replaced exhaust , they put new valve but i think they’ve never replaced that spring , only thing i can’t understand is why when its faulty it opens and shut while you drive and you can hear it operating 🤔
I started to read about of the ways to leave the valve open anytime (pulling out the fuse or simply disconnecting the actuator), but I've discovered many opinions. Some say that the exhaust is louder with the valve closed. What is the real truth? in the min 5:32 of the video, when the valve opens, the engine seems to be quieter. If I leave the valve open, then what is the result?
Mine was off by a few MM .. I wasn't able to put it back in with the metal protector but I was able to get it in at an angle and then force it to the correct position without the metal guard. Screwed it with a lot of pressure from my side pushing it back in place. I'm going to drive it that way for some time. Hope the water and stuff won't damage it. But lets see if it goes back to place so I can place the metal guard back on it. But finally the sound is gone.. it was so annoying. Mine was completely missing.
Huge success lol. I had to use BimmerLink on my phone to open/close the exhaust half way and then pulled the connector to get the pin to fit. All is well at the back end@@MDrives
Hey anyone else having this problem I had the actuator actually facing the same way hood was but instead of taking the module out or buying a new one I pressed the pin up against the actuator aswell as securing it into the exhaust flat while I was pressed against the actuator and exhaust flap I started the car and the pin snapped into place so no new actuator or removing anything just plug an play 👍 if anyone has any questions feel free to ask
I had the dealer look at the same issue and it was the pin - same as everyone, but the dealer is saying that the car needs to be put into "service mode" to replace the pin due to the wires in the actuator; the dealer is now telling me that "service mode" was unsuccessful and the car needs to be reprogrammed (for $450 USD). No one else seems to mention putting the vehicle in service mode in this string. Anyone know what this service mode is and why the dealer needs to engage it to replace a damn pin?
If it won’t, your motor is probably already damaged. If there was no pin to stop it, it turned more than it should. You can try to force it back in place but you might break the mechanism inside.
@@MDrives Yep, I actually forced it back and it seemed to do the trick. I was about 20 degrees away from where it should be. Checked the actuator and it moved. So looks like it worked.
I am in the same position. The clip is completely missing and it looks like the motor and the valve do not line up. I will try to remove the motor and align it with the valve (fingers crossed). There's also a bolt missing that holds it all together :(
Hey all! Just to add info to this issue. This actuator in the vid was definitely not broken I'm afraid. Mine was the same and it is completely normal. It over-rotates when it has no resistance as a normal part of its function. The problem I had was trying to get it back the groove on it back into a position where it can be aligned with the other side. Switching between driving modes in-car did not help for some reason it almost seemed like the actuator was dead, exactly like in the vid. But I tried using Bootmod3 (diagnostics menu there is a section when you can move the valve open and closed). I got someone to do this while I was under the car, and quickly pulled the cable out mid-rotation. Then it is relatively simple to get the spring in, just a little bit fiddly. Another method is to loosely assemble the actuator and spring with the bolts just finger tight, with the spring out of position but pushing against the actuator. Then get the actuator to switch by changing modes/revving the car or whatever you can find to make it move, and the spring can pop into alignment. You can then do it all up tighter (not too tight the bolts strip really easily be warned).
same issue here: grooves do not align properly to fix the clip and dealer will charge me > €350 to do it :( Actuator is fine as it reposons to sport comfort mode and flips, but I just cannot get it in the right orientation to put the clip in. According to the dealer there is a special mode in which it needs to be set: is this the bootmod3 you mention? How do you get there? And how come there are somany videos where people can just put the clip back in without efforts? My car is a F30 335
Thank you very very much for this comment. It does take a couple tries to get the pin to stay pressed up against the motor, but I just did this and it worked. Just starting the car and waiting a few moments (warm outside tonight) cause the motor to spin and it thumped itself right into the groove. Excellent idea.

When fitting the new spring does the valve in the exhaust need to be in the open or closed position? Or does it not matter?
Cloogan as you can see on this video when car is stationary the valve stays open and closes when you start a car.
Hi, how did you aline the new motor cause you didn’t explain how to do it , I’m still blocked with this problem . Thanks for your help
I forced it with a screwdriver. It was very difficult.
How about for the MPE muffler for the F8x? It uses a different spring
I had mpe on f87 and it was exactly the same.

Will this damage the engine if you don’t notice it for a while?
No. It o my changes the sound.
How did you unplug the wire harness from the actuator?

Nothing to lose then. Give it a go.
FamilyDriver in your opinion, if the groove from the motor doesn’t align with the groove from the valve is that a sign of a bad actuator?
