Besides the fact that a complete seal was not achieved by applying the paste...the original reason the muffler cracked then broke completely in two pieces was because the muffler/exhaust system IS NOT properly secured...when you slam the car door and the whole system shakes and moves back and forth is my proof...this system will violently shake itself to pieces again...this bandaid fix will fail...most likely within the first trip....

I still see a leak. Cheap and easy fix I did on mine... Steel wool double layered, held in place with furnace tape. (Furnace tape is only to hold the steel wool, otherwise it wouldn't last a couple of hours on the exhaust). Then layer aluminum sheeting over the steel wool using furnace tape to hold the sheeting in place so you can add a clamp or two. Works great and lasts a long time. Aluminum sheeting may need 2 - 4 layers depending on the hole.

To do a repair like that I got a exhaust pipe adapter and fit it inside the resonator (the part where the pipe broke off), and using an exhaust pipe expander, expanded it out so it was expanded against the inner pipe in the resonator. This effectively replaced the pipe end that broke off the resonator, and allowed me to attach the rest of the exhaust to this new 'stem'. I also tack welded the expanded pipe into the resonator from the inside of the pipe, purposely blowing through the pipe to make sure there was some bonding, but I don't think that was needed. To that end I have never had much luck with the exhaust sealant as it seems to crumble over time.

Retired mechanic here with 40 years experience in the trade. My last auto garage I owned did many flex pipe replacements. Also had many welders in the shop, mig, tig, arc, stick etc. Sold almost all equip including my Millermatic 225 or my Lincoln
TIG welder that I most likely would have used on this repair. Just recently purchased a brand new in the box Chicago Electric 90 amp Flux core welder from my neighbor for $50. Do you think Flux core can weld this? And yes, would have liked it if it was a 140 amp but it is what it is and I bought it as I did not have a welder any longer. Incidentally...... for "shits and giggles" and remind readers that safety on any job should be a priority. Few years ago sold business because of an injury. Winter was coming and wife wanted a stand by generator in case of loosing electricity up here in Northern Maine. Purchased a new Rigid 6800 one night from Home Depot, opened up my service panel to see where I was going to install the power feed for the house and stupidly grabbed a live 220 circuit powering my shed that has all my carpentry saws and tools and electrocuted myself thru my left hand (actually my thumb). My black thumb and forefinger were the worst burns 911 paramedics had seen they said. Wish that was the worst injury that night. Wife said the shock thru me some 6-10 ft and my body went into a seizure for over 3 minutes. Wife thought I was having a stroke, neither of which I ever had before. Now 3 years later at 62 years old I seize sometimes 10 times a year...or more wife says. And I can't remember a bloody thing most days. Wife's the best tho....she reminds me daily the names of my friends and neighbors...and also to take those dam pills (Keppra) so I don't seize. True story...again will a flux core weld this?

Looks like a big messy, pain in the a** job to me, that's made even more difficult by not having a proper hydraulic lift to get the vehicle up high enough off of the ground to work on it. (I've spent countless hours under my cars, over the years, using only jackstands and it can be a huge hassle.) I wouldn't trust the longevity of this repair either. Seems like a cheap and temporary fix at best. I personally wouldn't waste my time and money on such a repair, but i do understand that sometimes you have to do the best that you can with what you've got and with what you can afford.

This may holding in place temporarily, but it's still smoking. So technically, it is not repaired. That flex pipe is going to split on the corrugations eventually. It also appears like there's a broken or loose motor mount, too much shaking.

I do Hillbilly repairs too! But my car is 17 y/o and it is G-6 Detroit car. SALT!!!!!! I get two tall boy beer cans cut the ends sleeve it over the damaged parts and 3 hose clamps. It will get me 6 months and quiets it down enough to avoid JOHNNY LAW ! Hell I even then hand it with a drill hole and DOG CHAIN to lower the pressure. Taking it to my shade tree mechanic to evaluate the motor and transmission. If he says the motor still ok. I spend the 300 bucks and get a new exhaust via a license dealer. 19 moths left on my wifes payment book on her 2018 Buick Encore. Then it is my turn. I never had two car payments at once. Been very lucky. ( Once, my 1990 ford ranger motor let go at 369K with ORGINAL clutch on the night of my wifes second complete payment book. Send the payoff check 4 hours before! Original Ford Escape x'ed out via DRUNK ASSHAT!!! Wife ok. ) I might be out of luck this time!

It need a piece of pipe welded on. Whatever this fix is is in adequate. I needed to buy a new flex pipe. It required 7 welds at a garage up on a hoist by mechanics. Cost me $200.00. No way around it. I have muffler cement and I'll crawl under my car to fix holes and seperations of my exhaust pipes and mufflers. Maybe tape and metal can too. I dunno. Jerry rig is this DYIers fix.
    The question is risk/reward.
