What I love about this channel is the vast range of subjects covered. RMS is my go to for my daily technical fix. The thinking outside the box approach is inspiring.
Wow the amazing algorithm that is listening to my thoughts ... floorboards was why I looked for a video and there you are ... happy Saturday!!! Thank you
Robert, make sure you finish the wood before you tune it, even on the end that you are going to sand off for tuning. The finish, which you will want to insure that the wood is sealed, will add mass to the wood and thereby change the frequency of the board. You will have to refinish the tips of the boards each time you shave wood off in order to get it tuned exactly. With a finish, you won't have to worry about air moisture changing the sound of the boards through the seasons. Should the wood absorb moisture in a humid climate, the moisture will add mass and change the frequency. When the climate is dryer, it will reduce mass and change the frequency.
Nice one Rob, Takes me bask to when i was 12 in music class. Our mission was to creeate a musical instrument. i chose to make tubular bells with copper pipe and tinbeer. Teacher thought i was a genius but unknowing to him my father had a timber yard and it was just another ordinary day for me!v hahaha I think back now at 48 and realise i was pretty cool instrument actually but in hindsight i would have liked a tongue drum more!
I've made these before. Instead of using a hammer to strike them I made drumsticks with super balls. You must try this. You can use gorilla glue to attach them to hard wood dowels (use something substantial or they'll crack). Compliments on a great channel. @@@
I tired to buy the balls from the local pound store - they didn't have any and that was the only reason I didn't use them - I may well get some but nice tip mate - cheers
I've really enjoyed this series, this is a really cool crafting project! There's a lot of room for creativity in appearances. I was thinking a shortcut might be to find some wooden drawers from a desk to use as the box. It might also add some flair, already having a design or custom shape on one end. I was wondering if maybe it could actually be tuned by making slots in the tongues so you could slide it to the desired length before tightening down the bolt?
Just what you need after an evening down the rabbit hole. Was talking about what frequency earlier was needed to to turn rock to jelly? asking for a friend from way back.
@@ThinkingandTinkering I'm not sure on that, sure the Russian military messed with specific frequencies on humans in the sideband range and they might be the basis for most of music. I was thinking more about Granite. I''m thinking the GeoThermal industry uses some form of jiggling at the tip end. And Wildor in Masters of the Universe he was a Master tone bender.
I kept waiting for you to play each note at least once. Guess I will have to build it to find out if it will be something I want to build. Bit of a Catch 22!. ;-D I like your videos. Never know which interesting direction we'll be heading off in next!
Burn the wood then run over it with a wire brush before oiling, just like the Japanese do with wood to clad their homes. It not only looks great but has benefits like fire resistance. This could be made from reclaimed pallet hardwood. Also I wonder how a hole in the side would affect the sound, just like a speaker box that reverberates the air.
I have seen them with and without a hole mate - it didn't seem to make much difference and to be honest was one more process - as Musk said - the best process is no process lol

cheers mate - and thanks for taking the time to say so
Your so right about the importance of frequencies.
thanks for saying so mate

Again and again this comes up as my favorite channel. Thanks so much for all of the super interesting material.
awesome - thank you for taking the time to say so

very nice tips mate - thank you for taking the time to post them

hey mate - I would have loved to have seen that - genus is using the everyday to make something special mate

Thanks Robert 👍 Lovely sound on that fair play - Well done 😊 👍
thank you mate
Love it! Very neat.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great idea👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Only a man could describe a bolt as pretty but awesome idea

I have one more video to simplify it even further. I'll talk about that tuning option in that vid if that's ok?
@@ThinkingandTinkering Perfectly OK!! 🥰 I'm very curious if that would work!!! 😊
Just what you need after an evening down the rabbit hole. Was talking about what frequency earlier was needed to to turn rock to jelly? asking for a friend from way back.
well as we are finding out frequency seem to depend on mass, type of material and geometry so my guess is there wouldn't be one particular frequency

perfect for christmas
it would be a nice one - I hope he likes it

I try to keep the videos to the absolute essentials mate and really less than 10 mins - it surprising how hard that is to do lol
Good sound off it...:-) with some playing around you could create a sustain bar and dampener.
Desmond Bagley only to SLAVES, be strong Des. Don’t submit your Freedom and Liberty......
Would you like to serve the Collective or GOD?
nice idea mate - go for it
That would look nice with a Lichtenberg pattern burnt into the sides. You do have some MOTs lol
yep, the rule seems to be the higher the voltage, the finer the conducting trace, so several mot's and large layden's and perhaps some V2 ink
nice one mate - cheers
Cool. You can join my band any day Rob :)
awesome mate lol
👍
cheers mate
wounder what a loosely stretched spring inside would sound like? sort of a snare tong drum.
like a mass damper? - interesting - fancy giving it a go?
