That could also be a nice piece to just set out. I like the sounds it makes. Our son was a drummer. If he was still with us he would have me making one for him. Enjoyed, take care!

Nice job. You will find that you need to have about 2 1/4" of solid on each end so that the notes will have some sustain to them. Also, prior to glueing the top on, it is helpful to dato the end Of the tongue about 1/8" deep at the 2-1/4" mark from the end. This will give the note a richer tone and is a good starting point to start tuning from. Rather than drilling at the hinge side, use a chisel to lower the note. Remember you are trying to get the tongue to vibrate at a certain frequency. Think of it as a hinge. It needs to be even across the width of the tongue.
Keep at it you are doing great.

Correction: dato at the closed end of the tongue.

Try Google search engine and ask for tongue drum patterns. You may have to scroll down a bit, but there are quite a few there to give a try. If you look on RUclips, there are a couple of people that also do tongue drums that have their patterns in the comments. Good luck.

Does anyone have any info on 1/2" red oak for the top?

My largest tongue drum that I have in this video is using oak. I believe it’s 3/4 thick. All I can really say is give it a try and see what happens.
