You are an excellent interviewer! You ask great questions and then let your guest talk. Such gorgeous sounding instruments and fascinating to hear his story. Wonderful synchronicity he was in the area when you called. 😊
Kalani, sincerely thank you for sharing and teaching. You’re a highly skilled & talented musician and kind person. Thank you for your service to humanity and sharing the world of music ✨
As a wood instrument maker myself, that was very inspirational. Just love the tones of those drums, I've been wanting to start building them for a long time. Oh, and the bit about doing rhythm patterns as walking patterns without hand dominance, that was a precious bit of information I'll sure keep in mind. Thanks Kalani!
I had the great fortune to meet Michael and Joah when they were on their way to the labor day art festival in Sausalito. They're superbly professional, friendly, and just awesome guys all around. Highly recommended -- even if you're like me, a total noob and a percussion wannabe. I now have two of their instruments, and both are just masterful works of art.
I just recently started playing Tongue drums. I love it! I got a Luna from Tung Drum Company out of Ireland. There are not many videos on YT covering these instruments. You are one of the few.
I acquired one. It is a 9 note. It has his signature on the other side. It says M. Thiele 1987. It’s in excellent shape. I wonder how much this thing would go for. Although it’s fun to play. Nice and soothing.
does anyone knows about how much one of these (for example the size featured here) cost? I cant find it on their page and I hate to bother with writing them if I dont know if I can even afford it. also if theres a long waiting list?
You can probably make it out of any hardwood, but different woods have different sound characteristics. Oak, for example, sounds very dense and has almost no sustain - I don't care for the sound.

They do pop up on eBay, but I don't know why anyone would want to sell theirs. These are KEEPERS.
That sound! Looks deceptively simple to build and making them sound rich and have no overtones... not easy.
This is masterful
Amazing!

I just got a 12 key from 1986 at an auction in a small town in Florida for $41.
Steven Barnes you got a bargain!
You just ..... lucky one!!!
I think you got a very good bargain. Hope you're enjoying it.
I love these but what about tuning? Since they are wood I imagine there is warping
Really nice drums, is there possible to buy these in europe? And how would there work in cold dry climats?
Ask the folks at Hardwood Music. They can tell you.
check out the WoodPack drums in europe. They are beautiful
Finally managed to build a chorded drum like this. Any tips on recording it? I am having trouble getting a clean recording.
Who else is here after seeing that video from 2011 go viral?

These are larger drums, so I'm guessing they will be in the $400-500 range.
ok cool! that sounds like a ballpark I can deal with. thanks!
Didn't know Jeremy Renner could play drums/wooden instruments
Hey kalani ..when are you going to announce the results of the summer spectacular contest...??
Tomorrow!
Can they be made of ipe or cumaru hardwood? Or just certain types of wood?
Check their website. All instruments are listed with their wood types.

What are the best hardwoods for these types of instruments?
You can visit their website and it has the woods listed.
I wonder how a 4x bigger drum would sound with real deep vibration…..
Reminds me of a xylophone.
I miss Neil Peart
