Yes, this. Take Hold Of The Flame is probably their most reacted-to song. Though I feel like Queen Of The Reich (dystopian sci-fi/fantasy themed) at the same show has a slight edge in intensity.

I'm a 54 year old rock musician. Empire is the album this song is from. It's title track , Empire , is a killer song that is descriptive of '89/'90. Their previous album Operation Mindcrime is epic. Still among my fav top 10 all time rock/metal albums. Would be cool if you ladies reacted to the Operation Mindcrime album in it's entirety. 40 minutes or so in length. The albums message/concept is still prevalent today 32 years later.

This song always brings tears to my eyes. Reminds me of my daughters because I have always watched over them when they sleep and I often smile there sitting beside them.
I remember when my, now 13 yr old daughter, when she was maybe six, came running from her room in the middle of the night sobbing so hard that she couldn't speak or calm down. She had had a nightmare and once she calmed down, she said, "Daddy, I thought you died, I don't want you to die.". I comforted her and told her, "I am right here, you don't have to worry" and I slept with her clutched to my chest for the rest of the night.

I haven’t read through all the comments but the other 4 members of the band are not with Geoff Tate anymore since 2014. They had a bad spilt up and the other 4 members got a new singer and went to court against Tate for the name. Tate lost the name to the other 4 members and it’s sad to see that band not fully together. Geoff Tate does have his own band I believe it’s called Operation Mind Crime and he sings Queensryche music. Sad to see that band not together. Great band!

He's lost some relevance along with the music of those hair bands of the era, even though they're not quite the hair band genre, but when Empire came out that were trending in that direction. At the time he was very well respected as a singer, and usually at the top of lists of great vocalists, and if he's fallen down a few notches from where he used to rank, it will defend my statement.

Lucid dreaming heightens all your senses and causes the most raw primal emotions to manifest in the dream. Especially the loss of a loved one. Probably why that element was the main focus in the video. Truly my all time favorite song.

@@LEANNxARI There are several videos from the Mindcrime album that the band made into a package called Video Mindcrime. The link to it is here: ruclips.net/video/B4nFRnpehLU/видео.html
and begins with the album opener, Anarchy X. As I'm writing this from my worksite in Central Asia, RUclips says these videos are "blocked in your country." Hopefully the playlist is available in the USA.
Before you check out the entire album (CD or streaming), I recommend having the lyrics in front of you and prior to doing so check out the album on Wikipedia, which has a summary of the album's story. It's an amazing piece of writing and musical composition.
Additionally, since you state that you like concept albums, I especially would like to recommend Kamelot's two albums "Epica" and "The Black Halo," both of which tell a two part story based on Johann Goethe's "Faust" in which the protagonist "sells" his soul.
As stated with Mindcrime, check the story and have the lyrics on hand when you listen. I believe you won't be disappointed!
Btw, Queensryche has toured with Kamelot in the past, so there's a connection....
Cheers to you all as well!

    Hi LeannxAri!
Loved your reaction to this song. Yes the true fact is that Geoff is one of the most underrated singers EVER! His vocal abilitys is amazing.
The album Operation Mindcrime is one of the best albums of all time. It is a concept album that came out back in 1988, with a storyline
about corruption, power, prostitution, religion, hitman, murder and love. The lyrics on that album is chilling and sadly enough still relevant to day...
Here is an lyric example from the song "Spreading the disease" so you know what I mean.
    "Religion and sex are powerplays
Manipulate the people for the money they pay
    Selling skin, selling God
The numbers look the same on their credit cards
Politicians say no to drugs While we can pay for wars in South America
    Fighting fire with empty words
    While the banks get fat
    And the poor stay poor
    And the rich get rich
    And the cops get paid
    To look away
As the one percent rules America"
I love your reactions and I will keep coming back for more.
    Keep it up!
    Be safe!
    Björn

The Warning battle with Rage for best QR album for me, with OM as a really close third. Well TBH, from day to day all three could take top spot. After Promised Land though... just some songs here and there. Not going into the whole Todd controversy as it usually escalates into a flame war (but I like the albums with him personally).

You probably won't see this comment since this video was posted so long ago but you were actually correct, this song is about lucid dreaming. During the musical breakdown there's a voice in the background talking about how to obtain dream control or lucid dreaming. The song was written by the band's guitarist for his young son who was having nightmares. And at the end you can actually hear a little bit of Brahms Lullaby just before it goes silent. And yes, definitely Pink Floyd vibes. I remember when this song came out since I'm an old head and that was exactly what I thought on first listen. When the radio played it I thought I was getting a new Pink Floyd to until he started singing.

I've been listening to Queensryche and the metal genre for many many years. I wouldn't classify Queensryche as a metal band, more rock and hard rock. But this song is my favorite song ever and I'm usualy not the type of person that says "this is my favorite" because I like many different music genres and songs. However, this song helped me get through some dark times in my life, I would play it over and over and eventually learned how to play it on acoustic guitar. Many years later I sang this to my son when he was just a baby to rock him to sleep.

The song is about lucid dreaming. The song was written after the guitarist read a book on lucid dreaming. Check out the lyrics you will understand it better.

Another underrated singer you guys must check out is Michael Kiske. He sings for the German band Helloween and Unisonic. One of his vocal masterpiece in my opinion is "We have the Right" or "Eagle Fly Free". Please check it out, you will not be disappointed.

Queensryche are considered a Progressive Hard Rock/Metal band. Their first 6 albums from 1982-1994 were tremendous, they had heavy songs and some softer or more experimental songs. Their Highly recommended album is Operation Mind-crime (1988) basically it’s a concept album with each song connecting to tell a dark story. Highly recommended listening overall!

I was a HUGE Queensryche fan back in the day. This isn't at all their typical sound. And I 100% agree with you - I always felt like this was their attempt to do something in the style of Pink Floyd. But most of their music is much heavier, and I dare say more interesting.

This song IS about lucid dreaming. Some people can take full control of what they dream of. Some cannot. I think I'm in the middle. This song takes a special place in my heart, because before this song was made, I was adolped at age 9. I had some bad things happen to me before I was adolpted. So, I used to have these terrible nightmares. I was actually afraid to go to bed and go to sleep, because I didn't want to see some daemon in my dreams or witness my adolptive mom get brutally killed in my dreams. Well, overtime, I believe that I have somehow learned "a little" how to take control of my dreams and stear a potentially bad dream to a different direction.
I would make up stories/fantasys in my head while I was gong to sleep (because I was afraid to go to sleep..so, I created a fantasy world), and I would finally fall asleep. Well, my dreams started to take over my "stories/fantasys". And then, I would somehow take back control of my dreams while I was dreaming (I don't know how, it just happens). Now, days (and back when I started this), I can actually tell that I am dreaming and tell that this dream is going to be bad. So, I say to myself, in the dream, "I'm dreaming. I do not like how this is going. Let's do something else in this dream." It is hard to explain, but I've been doing this since I was a child. Anyway, I haven't had a "real" nightmare in many years because of this. Yes, every once in a while, I will get startled and woken up by a voice calling my name out, but that's not really a nightmare compared to what I had as a child. I didn't even know what lucid dreaming was until this song came out and they talked about this song and what it meant. Of course, I give God thanks, first. However, this song is still special to me.

Thanks for this one. I saw Queensryche live some years ago and they are top shelf musicians. Also agree about Operation Mindcrime and Empire- both were huge at the time. One of my favorite live songs from Operation Mindcrime is Eyes of a Stranger. It really shows off Geoffs range and power. I would suggest this one as I have not seen another reactor do it. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year to you both!

Just to fill out a little more of the lineup situation...in addition to the lead singer no longer being with the band, the drummer has been “missing in action” for the past couple of years (he hasn’t performed/recorded with the band for a number of years...but hasn’t communicated well what his status is...so, there’s a new drummer...and the new lead singer recorded drums on their most recent album)...and, the lead guitarist left Queensryche back in the 90’s and they have gone through a number of lead guitarists since then. So, to sum up, from this video, the only members remaining are the rhythm guitarist and bassist. Kind of disappointing as the lineup in the 80’s into the early 90’s put out some pretty amazing music.

But keep in mind that Eyes Of A Stranger is kinda like The Deathly Hallows Part 2. It can be enjoyed on its own but won't have the same impact as hearing it as the last piece of the narrative arc created by the rest of the work, and you'll be wondering (metaphorically speaking) why the aging goth dude and the old guy in the bathrobe are getting so emotional about stuff haha.

Haven't read through the comments to know if this has been mentioned, but 'Take Hold of the Flame' (Live in Tokyo version), by Queensryche, is the song to check out if you're interested in seeing Tate's true singing talent. It's been reacted to at least half a dozen times by others on RUclips, and always seems to impress. :)

I t is about a lucite dream state and the belief that you can control what you do in that dream state. That came from the Band itself when the song first came out.

  • @natecourteau1268

Yep. This song is essentially borne of, aware of or not, Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". Even though Tate says he was unaware of it, It doesn't matter, because Silent Lucidity is pretty anyway.
