The square body is easier to work on, plus will still be running 20 years from now. On some of these newer models you have to lift the cab off just to change the spark plugs.
Meh, I appreciate your kind words, but the clear coat is peeling off the hood and roof, and there is a dent behind the left rear wheel. Interior should be getting a refresh in summer of 2021, as well as a new windshield ( it's mega pitted from the six years it spent in Nevada) and wheels and tires hopefully. Again, thank you for your comments.
I’ll take the old Silverado, hands down. The new ones are super nice; but their POS.... the old Silverado I can work on and fix; plus their TONS more reliable.
Had a 2014 Ltz and a 96 1500. Still preferred my 96. The 14 definitely rode smoother but u can’t beat that feeling driving something u know was made right the first time.
Still with me is 1996 Silverado 2500. 5.7 L Engine w/ Vortec. Have had the used for 10 years now. Currently 440,500 KM on the Odometer. Running exceptionally well. Love every bit of it!
I just bought a 99 K1500 with the 5.7. Do you know what the difference is between the 2500 and 1500 that allows for the different haul/tow ratings since they both have the 5.7? Depending on what the differences are, I’d like to build up my 1500 to be a modernized and ‘stealth’ 2500.

My dad is selling me his 94 gmt400. he bought his new in 1991, and found a good deal on a 94. He's put 850k+ on it achieving his American dream., when i think of a truck i think of this one. Looking forward to my children being uncomfortable in the extended cab going to visit grandpa.
Hell no I ain't giving up my 96 Silverado nope my first wife said get rid of that old truck and that bull dog that rides in the back too I looked at my ol bull dog said load up and that was that I was very young hell had the same truck and same bull dog riding in the back when I got with my second wife but she loved my old pickup and my bill dog to well that was 32 years ago and we're still together raised four children I still drive a old pick up and if it's not to hot still got a pit bull dog riding in the back
The newest truck ive ever owned is a 1993 lol. still have it and love it! its super reliable, no rust at all, well taken care of, lifted, fuel injected, woooweee i love it. But one day ima get me a 2014 or newer 2500
I think the 14 to present interiors will hold up better as we just got a 14 ltz Silverado and the interior feels much better than 90s interior which has the worst interior door handles that break left and right
My 94 k2500s transmission just went out early this year. It was my farm truck and daily driver but I live in Indiana and the salt was eating away at the body and frame so I decided it wasn’t worth putting a new tranny in. Broke down and bought a 2014. It’s nice not having to work on something at last once a month, and I’m being spoiled on all fancy tech and stuff but I truly miss the pure utility of my older truck. I’ll probably find another one to use on the farm and tinker with. Hopefully one that’s not completely are up from salt.
I bought a 15' cause I loved the look of the front end. It's like a modern take on the obs. Wish I didnt get rid of my 98' 5.7 and had both like this gentleman. She had over 300k on the clock and probably still running.
I feel that I can speak to both of these models. I’ve owned literally the same year models as you. Had a ‘15 model LT. Very nice truck. Currently own a 98 GMC Sierra extended. Mint condition from an older gentleman. Got very lucky in the find. And I absolutely would choose the older every day of the week. Twice on Sunday.

I love this thank you for doing a review. My dad bought his 96 silverado 1500, extended cab for $900. It's green and I just love it It's green and we've been working on it for about three years. So far we've replaced the front end we built a racing transmission for it. We lowered it 3-4 inches we have some black rims on it with street tires. It's running really good altogether We have a flowmaster super 10 on it as well. He uses it as a work truck and he's a painter so there are specks of white paint all over it, so we might end up getting it repainted. And replacing the lights with LEDs. Anyways thank you for your time, and keep up with the OBS, wish I had one.
@@marklucas1028 Two days ago I actually got a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer, 4.2 l inline 6. It is just straight headers with no cat right now so it's loud. I plan to do straight pipe, with a magnaflow exhaust. I think that'll sound pretty good and maybe a big tip, since it's only a single pipe.
Throw some 15" white spoke rims on with some 33" super swampers TSX's 14" wide. Best all around tires I ever owned. They are amazing in the snow. People say that the rubber is to soft and they don't last long, but mine lasted 7 yrs as daily driving tires plus a quite a bit of off roading before they got to the wear lines. And they look killer. My next set I'm getting are the super swamper boggers. Going to be getting them in a month or so.
In my opinion square body trucks and the gmt400 trucks were the best two gm truck bodystyles, well an 62-72 gm trucks but they are actually considered three different bodystyles..
I tell you what I've driven the new Chevy trucks and I own an obs GMC it's a 1993 GMC Sierra SLE C3500 long bed and I got to tell you I prefer my OBS truck over a new one
I also have a 15 single cab and a 91 obs single cab both black, I want to Ls swap the obs from its V6. 15 Silverado is really the last year that they have that Chevy front end we all love. But the 16 Silverado front ends look so sexy. I’m still contemplating on switching front ends.
They made the OBS well, the 99-06 was good too, 2007-13 wasn’t bad, kind of disappointed with the body on mine, the 2014 and up are designed very well, body and interior, even in Canada I haven’t see one with rust, other than the frame that is
Get my 2015 fluid filmed every November. The steel is definitely thinner than on the OBS. There's no way I'm making that huge payment just so this thing can rust out from under me
Ha that's so cool, glad I came across this. I have a 2018 Z71 and a 1996 Vortec. I'm still trying to figure out which one I like better lol....ah the hell with it, I love em both!
Have a 89 scottdale k2500 with a dump truck tranny love it they do last any older vehicle will have its problems but with these trucks its relatively simple to fix with basic tools and off the shelf parts readily available that's why they stay on the road
Chevy OBS is a beauty with it’s timeless design. It does look small next to the newer one but I bet the 2015 will not hold up as well if it makes it to 22 years of age.
No problems yet. I even towed a POS PT Cruiser from Missouri to Ohio with the 2015. Had the car packed with stuff, as well as the bed. Only had to stop for gas one extra time as opposed to when we went out there. I didn't realize it until we were on our way back that the 2015 has a Jake Brake when it's in Tow/Haul mode under a load. Pretty slick!
Please take your tail lights out and wash your inner boxside and wheel well and spray some fluid film around the entire inner wheel well and between the boxside and where the wheel well come together. Do this before and after winter you should never have trouble with your boxsides rusting out. I work at a body shop and see this style already rusting when we replace a boxside. I do this on my 2017 Chevy
I've owned Ford's and Dodges, and Chevys have been only one since the past 20 years I do respect the little Tacoma though good little trucks bit you feel like an elf inside of those they're so tight in the cab
I currently own a 1996 C1500, a 1997 C2500, a 2003 1500 & a 2011 Denali Duramax 2500 HD. The 1997 C2500 & 2011 2500 HD were both bought brand new. The 1996 was bought with 72K miles & the 2003 with 108K miles. I bought those two trucks for my two oldest sons, but I still have both of them after they got older and bought theirselves new trucks. I will kick rocks at the 2003 1500 & 2011 Duranax 2500 HD as I walk past them to get to my 1996 C1500 or 1997 C2500, especially to get to the 1997 C2500 truck !!! That 1997 C2500 Chevrolet truck is the single best money that I’ve ever spent on anything in my lifetime. 464K miles, all factory original truck outside of the rims, radio, headlights & parking light assembly’s. That truck was bought & used for the purpose that it was built for, as the majority of those 464K miles that truck has had a duel tandem 25ft gooseneck trailer hooked to the back of it, it’s routinely pulled more weight than what it’s rated for. I’ve replaced 1 starter, 1 radiator, 1 water pump, 1 fan clutch, 1 fuel pump & 1 A/C Compressor over that 24 years & 464K mile time period on that truck. !!!! If there’s one thing that I know is gonna crank each & every time I hit the key, well it’s that green & brown 1997 C2500 Chevrolet truck. Just like the guy in the video said about his, I’ll never get rid of that truck, because that ole girl has certainly earned her keep, it’s been responsible in some way shape or form in helping to pay for everything I own !!!!
I have a 96 HD 2500 with 322,000 Runs like the day I bought it and I don't know what will stop it. If it does have to go I'm going to bronze one of the lug nuts.
Nice trucks. I fixed up a 95 extended cab 2wd with a 5.7 that belonged to my recently passed grandma who used it to do light duty around house (basically hauling yard stuff like sticks etc). It’s got 278K on it but looks & runs great. I think motor has been rebuilt but not sure. Anyways, nice video man & salute to your military mention ;)
@@Carloss80k I have some on my iPhone but nothing posted to RUclips. If I ever post anything to RUclips I’ll try and remember to post one. It’s not a mint condition truck by any means (scratches here and there) but really great shape and I had all the rust cut out & replaced with new cab corners, etc. Thanks for asking though, I’m proud of the ole truck even though it’s not worth probably a whole lot.
Goals man🔥🤙, I love the color. green is my favorite as well. I have a 95 C1500 original pushing 324K Miles 😳. Trying to modernize it a bit and mix the two aspects of today and the past into the 95 without fucking it up
I’m late to the video but perfect timing I was considering finding a 2015 for the same reason in case my old obs kicks dirt in crucial times. 2015 is the last front end I appreciate from the modern years and that green is what I’d go for too. Sweet trucks man. Even your obs i plan on taking my back seats out too, I’ve got a stepside tho. I love the obs so much i almost want to buy a single cab stepside z71 though the newest i can find is 1991. Anyways sorry for the ramble great video!
Man with all the salt put on those roads up there I'm surprised the body out lasted the motor I used to live between Cleveland Ohio and. Erie PA one thing for sure Chevy and rust go together like peanut butter jelly Ford and Dodge also had trouble with their paint an clear coats fading out
Bought the '98 in May of 2008. Truck spent majority of its life in the south and out west. I've gotten it oil sprayed every year, and wash it religiously.
The styling looks more refined on the older truck, at least to me. I don't like those bulgy front fenders and that oversized grille on the newer truck. But I could go for that green colour any day. I guess I'm prejudiced since I have a '97.
I don't really consider a 98 obs, I mean yea it's square on the out side but that inside is just to newish. Obs stopped in 94 for me when everything was still square inside and out
Wonder why you see so many interior variations with 94/95. Mine looked so old and square inside (preferable) to one in same year or more. Hard to find that again.
I'll own a 97 GMC K1500 and I also owned a 2019 Nissan Frontier as I will never buy another American-truck manufacturer. Thank God my 97 was assembled in Canada.
Nice trucks i have a lifted 2018, and a lifted 97 tahoe, my tahoe is the same color green as your obs, my dad did body work on it and the paint job was SWAG, people coming up at red lights complementing my truck and the nebraska salt destroyed it
Have the 94 Silverado what's the nv4500 manual transmission something I learned with Chevy is never go automatic you won't find that option with the new one plus I get 25 Miles to gallon Highway that's what the 7-in lift and 33 by 12 R15 I routinely Drive 76 miles on 3.1 gallons of gas 350 vortec bored 30 over carbureted not injected with headers and an x pipe
My dream car combo if I hit the powerball: obs Chevy, cammed with performance intake and exhaust for daily driver. Ls swapped ‘87 Monte Carlo for Sunday burnouts. Does this make me a Chevy fanboy?
Cool my old truck is a early 94 Chevy extended cab short bed Z71 onyx gloss black with the quicksilver center stripe running down the sides and the tailgate has a 1987 Chevy p30 1 ton 4bolt main 0.40 350 tbi th700r4 from a 90 Chevy k2500 3/4 ton flatbed with a 350 tbi, my truck has a new heartthrob deep tone dual exhaust pipe kit but welded straight to the exhaust manifold down pipes 2 1/4 inch exhaust pipe tubing and heartthrob brand medium sized glass pack mufflers and the 3 1/2 inch outlet 18 inch long single wall tubing stainless steel slant cut exhaust tips its loud and good god if it is running like crap and backfiring through the exhaust tips it sounds like a 12-16 side by side double barrel shot gun going off simultaneously lol neighbors hated that truck lol
99 to 2006 is the best Chevy truck ever built. Might be the best truck ever It's right in the middle It still has torsion bar in the front but it's kind of old school small block no VVT no cylinder deactivation but at the same time it's new age new coils better injection system simple though Right in the middle perfect I'm way more power too but I will say those 350s I felt like had more bottom and grunt than even the new 53 and those square boys look the best
Hey may I ask where that first drive by was? Long story short, Im looking at moving to an under appreciated and most importantly, more affordable area, and I love the look of that road (Saying this as someone who spent 3 months in Ashtabula county but lives in Texas sadly)
Just bought a 97 just like that one, little bit more rust and needs some love, but it starts right up and runs! I’m not a mechanic by any means but wanted something I could tinker with myself but could also rely on to get me to and from work. Love them OBS!
The biggest issue with a GM is living in Ohio and owing a GM product is 90% of traffic accidents involve a chevy.. It's almost synonymous with hillbilly GenZ. Used to be Nissan Rogue, but post Trump, it's become GM products. So, you basically have to identify as the type who text messages and drives with your left turn signal on while making a right and blowing a light. 😂 That said this man really takes care of his vehicles, ohio winters melt cars and the majority of owners here do not maintain their cars. With no inspection they have zero desire to spend money on maintenance. This shows how much time and effort has gone into maintenance and cheers to this guy, anyone who keep's a 90's native ohio product rust free should get a trophy..
I will die behind the wheel of a 90s chevy ive had 3 of them so far currently i have a 93 body with a 89 frame with a vette motor and if I get hit ill probably be the only vehicle driving away theres a reason those old chevys dont have air bags they didnt need them
I have a friend that’s got 2018 now I got 1995 OBS and even GM says 1994to2000 are the better Truck I think I would restore the old let your son have the cheeper new one !
It is called a Jam Handle. You use it to close the door instead of getting fingerprints all over the door. If you go to the website they have different sizes and colors. Shows a short video of how it works.
I rather have the older one. I currently daily a squarebody. The new trucks are nice but I like my stuff paid off.
True
I mean, I have a 2015 Silverado paid cash, is not that hard, but i still agree with you man!
@BigBlock Beast yeah that ain’t ever happening
Couldn't of said it better
The square body is easier to work on, plus will still be running 20 years from now. On some of these newer models you have to lift the cab off just to change the spark plugs.
When you said “ she’s no beauty queen “ for the obs , I really stopped and looked really good at it it , she’s in excellent condition

Why would you ditch one of the most reliable, low cost generations of Silverado for an unreliable $50K+ new one?
Personally the Cateye Silverado is my favorite generation.

I'll let you know. 😂
wow they call me mark. and i have an obs step side in the garage and a 16 silverado. had to check this out .
Nothing like 90s Chevys I own a 1997 3500 just love it
I'm a chevy owner but the the only problem with the newer Chevy trucks are the transmission.
I have my 95 Chevy c1500 as a daily driver and love it
Nice vid, and cool trucks!
Thank you for your kind words.
I have a 96 HD 2500 with 322,000
Runs like the day I bought it and I don't know what will stop it.
If it does have to go I'm going to bronze one of the lug nuts.
Thank you for sharing this information!
Thank u for your service
Nice trucks. I fixed up a 95 extended cab 2wd with a 5.7 that belonged to my recently passed grandma who used it to do light duty around house (basically hauling yard stuff like sticks etc). It’s got 278K on it but looks & runs great. I think motor has been rebuilt but not sure. Anyways, nice video man & salute to your military mention ;)
any videos?
@@Carloss80k I have some on my iPhone but nothing posted to RUclips. If I ever post anything to RUclips I’ll try and remember to post one. It’s not a mint condition truck by any means (scratches here and there) but really great shape and I had all the rust cut out & replaced with new cab corners, etc. Thanks for asking though, I’m proud of the ole truck even though it’s not worth probably a whole lot.
There are not many people that can afford a new truck they cost as much as a house
I agree. That 2015 was $48,000 new. I bought it in January of 2018, and it was still $32,000. Ridiculous!
Not in California. Houses start at about 550k
Goals man🔥🤙, I love the color. green is my favorite as well. I have a 95 C1500 original pushing 324K Miles 😳. Trying to modernize it a bit and mix the two aspects of today and the past into the 95 without fucking it up
Thumbs up for the favorite color. It makes me sad that you can no longer get a manual transmission in a full size truck.
*Which one are you picking?* OBS or modern truck?

OBS is the beauty of the 2.

I've got a '94 Silverado and my grandpa has a 2016 Silverado. I'd easily take my grandpas, but the price tag is a little bit different XD
The styling looks more refined on the older truck, at least to me. I don't like those bulgy front fenders and that oversized grille on the newer truck. But I could go for that green colour any day. I guess I'm prejudiced since I have a '97.
Boy them GM wheel wells keep getting smaller and more squared. Or at least it feels that way. Nice pair lol
Thank you, sir! I feel ya about the wheel wells, but just so everyone knows, the 2015 is running 20s and the OBS has 16s.
I don't really consider a 98 obs, I mean yea it's square on the out side but that inside is just to newish. Obs stopped in 94 for me when everything was still square inside and out
Yeah I like the 94 style too I like the interior better as well the 2 toned is hella clean.. and the spoke steering wheel
Wonder why you see so many interior variations with 94/95. Mine looked so old and square inside (preferable) to one in same year or more. Hard to find that again.
cool video, thank you for your service as well.
I'll own a 97 GMC K1500 and I also owned a 2019 Nissan Frontier as I will never buy another American-truck manufacturer. Thank God my 97 was assembled in Canada.
Your Frontier was assembled in Mississippi, the K2 Silverado in this video was assembled in Mexico
Those are goregeous trucks, I'm really diggin that 2015👌
Nice trucks i have a lifted 2018, and a lifted 97 tahoe, my tahoe is the same color green as your obs, my dad did body work on it and the paint job was SWAG, people coming up at red lights complementing my truck and the nebraska salt destroyed it
Pretty cool straight to the point video
I have the OBS truck and I love mine
Cool my old truck is a early 94 Chevy extended cab short bed Z71 onyx gloss black with the quicksilver center stripe running down the sides and the tailgate has a 1987 Chevy p30 1 ton 4bolt main 0.40 350 tbi th700r4 from a 90 Chevy k2500 3/4 ton flatbed with a 350 tbi, my truck has a new heartthrob deep tone dual exhaust pipe kit but welded straight to the exhaust manifold down pipes 2 1/4 inch exhaust pipe tubing and heartthrob brand medium sized glass pack mufflers and the 3 1/2 inch outlet 18 inch long single wall tubing stainless steel slant cut exhaust tips its loud and good god if it is running like crap and backfiring through the exhaust tips it sounds like a 12-16 side by side double barrel shot gun going off simultaneously lol neighbors hated that truck lol
make a Video , Let's see it. Love the early 90s K1500s
Put a tune in that 5.3 ...money well spent totally wakes em up
I plan on it. I heard a tune will make that 5.3 run with the 6.0
Great video bro!
I recommend going with some good halogens vs LEDs. The latter aren't that great at emitting the light to the road in halogen designed headlights.
I personally enjoy the older trucks more but I’ve never owned a Chevrolet newer than 2010 so I don’t know what the new trucks are like
Just bought a 97 just like that one, little bit more rust and needs some love, but it starts right up and runs! I’m not a mechanic by any means but wanted something I could tinker with myself but could also rely on to get me to and from work. Love them OBS!
Congrats man, that truck should treat you well for a long time to come 👍
Brake caliper cover part number?
I hear alot of new gm trucks have lifter and pushrod problems, il stick to my 03 Silverado
I like your trucks, If you don't mind me asking how much lift did you get with the torsion crank?, and what size tires are on the k1500?
My 2007 chevy Silverado long bef 4 8 liter has 349 thousand miles hauling carpet around still runs good best trunk ever i had😂
Love the OBS Chevys!!
Another Question, did you have to do anything to your driveline or get new shocks after you added the two inch blocks?
Nice looking trucks green is my favorite too.
Both are very clean
Thank you!
@@marklucas1028 you're welcome thank you for the video
Very clean OBS truck
Like the older one a lot better!
I will die behind the wheel of a 90s chevy ive had 3 of them so far currently i have a 93 body with a 89 frame with a vette motor and if I get hit ill probably be the only vehicle driving away theres a reason those old chevys dont have air bags they didnt need them
@@tommys2979 well we all cant afford a prius that runs on unicorn farts and don't worry there's enough tire on my truck to cushion the impact lol
What do you actually use the trucks for besides daily drivers?
Hauling and towing random stuff. The '98 is pretty much my toy now.
Take a drink every time this guy says uumm.
On the obs, which color is that the emerald green or the teal color that chevy made
I have a friend that’s got 2018 now I got 1995 OBS and even GM says 1994to2000 are the better Truck I think I would restore the old let your son have the cheeper new one !
What is that red thing inside the guys 2015 door jamb?
It is called a Jam Handle. You use it to close the door instead of getting fingerprints all over the door. If you go to the website they have different sizes and colors. Shows a short video of how it works.
