My 96 C1500 Silverado 4.3L has 400k on the original engine/transmission and it still runs and shifts silky smooth. Have had it since 30k. Tail lights can be a problem until you come across a good circuit board set. And at this age, its the wiring that's starting to have problems. Keep changing the oil/transmission fluid and don't beat the crap out of your truck and your golden.
I have a 93 chevy C1500 4.3 with 320,000 miles! Like the old Bob seger song......"like a rock" Back in the 90s Chevy trucks were "the heartbeat of America" Not so much anymore.
Been through 2 OBS GM's, a '95 Silverado C1500 & a '92 Blazer K1500. Gas hogs but beasts on the road. Just bought a '95 Sierra C2500 with 522,300 kms for 370$ in an auction. Thing purrs like a kitten at idle, and roars like a lion when I step on the gas.
The OBS and First Gen Silverado's are probably the best beater truck you can get that you ain't gotta worry bout tearing up. The formers a little easier to work on and fucks aesthetically, but the latter has better gas mileage and is a better truck in most respects.
I was able to buy a 94 Silverado for 2k... that’s all no catch. I’ve had it for like half a year now no issues besides an antifreeze leak which I already fixed. Getting it painted now. These trucks are the best
i daily my late fathers 98 gmc serria SLT 2500. he bought her as a gm program truck with 9400 miles on it in 2000 he said it was the nicest truck he ever owned. my pop spent the first 3 days he owned her waxing cleaning and greasing everything. He was so happy its such a great memory. he was a hard working man who always put his family first. despite making good money he never really bought much for himself. and so watching him pet his new truck like it was a kitten for half a week brought me a deep sense of joy. god i miss him so much..sorry for getting all touchy feely.
Hi from New Zealand. I just brought one imported from the US earlier this year. Absolutely love my 97 C1500. Works like a dream and I get alot of looks from my fellow right hand driving kiwis haha Great review ✌️
I don't have the pickup version but the SUV version. I own a black 1996 2500 4x4 Suburban SLT with the 7.4L 454 connected to a 4l80e trans and love it. Really reliable and easy to work on. This platform is a reliable workhorse while looking good doing it. It has 118k on it and I keep it clean inside and out. I keep it in the garage because every time it's in the driveway I get several people coming to my door asking if I want to sell it. I also have a 2004 1500 Suburban 4x4 with the 5.3L and a 4l60e trans with 206k on it and is still running very strong with all original drive train still in it. I love them both and don't think I will ever sell or get rid of them. I plan on passing them on to my boys later when they have their families.
I just bought a 90 5.7L and the amount of space the engine bay has is insane, my daily is a 350z and let me tell you everything in that engine compartment is crammed in
I got a 97 5.7 and it's the only truck I ever want to own, bought when I was 16 for $2,500 outright and no payments. I'm 20 now and still love it, got a new transmission, radiator and hoses, exhaust. I plan on getting a CA intake and American Thunder 10 or Magnaflow exhaust soon
Just picked up a one owner 1995 K2500 Extended cab- Silverado package with 115K on the clock. Garage queen. While it doesn't have the Vortec Heads, I know the TBI 350s run forever too. Very excited about it.
I bought a 97 C1500 with bad head gaskets for $100. I'm an auto tech school graduate and working on a 350 even for a novice diy mechanic is like playing with Legos. I've had it 5 years now and I'll never let it go. 260k and still going strong. The vortec powered Silverado will never truly be replaceable even in modern traffic.
I have a 96 Silverado, it has 550K miles and still going strong, original motor, oil changed every 4-5k, rebuilt trans at about 380k. super easy to work on. I purchased it in 2008 from original owner friend for $2500 (deal back then) with around 140k. I commuted 1000 miles a week in it for the better part of a decade in Los Angeles traffic, it has a ton of power even loaded with a lot of weight or in my case tools. I don't drive it to work any more but its the best truck iv'e ever had, in fact I upgraded to a new Silverado, same model but over 20 years newer. I still have the old truck, been thinking about passing her on though. I know it in and out and can fix its problems myself. Its always the same things, alternator, breaks, rotors, radiator, battery or O2 sensors so it can pass smog bit I figures out I could reset the battery and drive it a hundred miles or so and the engine light will stay off. I live at 3500 feet above sea level and I suspect driving daily to sea level effects that somehow. Just think about it though, mine has over 550,000 THOUSAND miles on the original motor which still is good, doesn't burn oil and has good oil pressure, doesn't smoke and passes smog. It needs some love but other then a few small things its been real good.
Inherited a 96 Z71 K1500 Silverado from my father. In the process of restoring it right now, it's on its way to being a damn beautiful truck. Only at around 119k miles right now.
My family has had our 98 c1500 since I was a toddler. Its was my dad's (he bought it in 2005) and became my first vehicle once I got my license. I still have it and will never get rid of it. Still running strong 💪
Agree, these old trucks, if kept up are great vehicles for work and easy for the DIYers who love to work on vehicles. Simple mechanicals, only one computer to control the engine fuel delivery, for the most part nice interiors, and the best part: hugely available parts in the junk yards for almost anything that needs replacement. The aftermarket is still strong for any upgrades needed for this generation of GM truck. And, they don't look outdated in style or looks, IMO.
I love these things. I have three GM trucks from this era...a 99 Chevy Tahoe 4-dr, a 97 Chevy Tahoe 2-dr, and a 93 GMC Suburban 2500. All with 4WD. They are tough, dependable, reliable, and cheap and easy to fix when something does go wrong! Also, they are SHARP-LOOKING! But can we PLEASE stop calling these trucks OBS..."Old Body Style"...ANY body style that is not current is an "old body style"! Technically, a 1976 square-body is an "old body style". I like the GM designation GMT400 much better than OBS.
Love the video man awesome review. I have a 98 k 1500 had it for 5 years now been great she just turned 265000 miles. Just keeps on trucking only problem I have is the distributor caps keep going out or cracking. I did replace the trans at 223000 miles not bad I think. I lifted it 2 years ago replace all the steering and balljoints with life time ac Delco parts. Even with the lift still have not had a promise after 2 years with 35 inch tires. This truck is a tank goes were I tell it and does what I ask it to. I would sell it for anything. My son wants it I told he can have it when he can pull the keys out of my died hands ha ha. It's so reliable and easy to fix love them. My dad had one and I have one now great video 👍
I have a ‘97 K1500, 5.7/4L60E, Extended cab, Z71 package. The truck has 275k miles and has only had one transmission rebuild. Everything on it is solid except the drivers side cab corner. My plan is to replace it with a new daily driver soon and start restoration on it. This truck has never failed on me, and starts every time I turn the key. They’re solid trucks!
Great video. I have a 1998 GMC CK 1500 with 317k miles on her. Yes those darn tail lamps! Its super frustrating to be driving with all your lights working and then all of a sudden your directional bulb on the tailight goes out. Luckily, I have never gotten water in them. It is just because the circuit relay gets so damn hot (the middle bulb holder) and fries it. Its the least of my complaints considering how reliable these trucks are mechanically.
Just bought a 98 gmc 5.7 last week. Had to move to our new house, and even without a tailgate atm (previous owner is bringing it Saturday) this thing is great. Just used straps and moved alot of stuff, even towed a trailer with it. It has definitely served me well in the time ive had it.
I've got a 95 Tahoe pretty much the same drivetrain as this truck I got it from my Granddad and I don't think I'll ever sell it. Its just so reliable and and easy to work on
“LT1” It’s LT1 based but the LT1 was a 1992-1997 Corvette, Camaro, and Impala SS motor making 300hp. What came in these is called the L31, with vortec cylinder heads and was rated at 255hp (1996-2002) I miss my 97 suburban so much
I had an 88 Chev Silverado long box extended cab and canopy and with a few performance parts I managed to get over 1000 kilometers on one tank of gas approx 113 litres. My calculation was 24 miles to the gallon. It was hit and wrecked so I now have 94 GMC Sierra long box extended cab with a canopy, it is getting everything I had on the 88 and should be at same fuel economy soon. I would never buy ford or dodge

I just had my 5.7L rebuilt with a longer stroke crankshaft to make it a 383, but I’m not feeling any increase in power or torque. Did you do anything else to the ecm or intake system on your 383 to make it create more power?
@@traveling.down.the.road56 all it has done to it that I know of is larger bore and stroke, aluminum intake and long tube headers. And I put a k&n filter and roller tip rockers on it. It doesn’t really make any significant more power

Super clean . Best trucks compared to even today's 50,000 cost of new

L31 not lt1
Small Block Chevy (SBC) 350/5.7L L31 Vortec.
The first-gen Vortec engines did have issues with intake gaskets and the stock spider injectors, but are both simple fixes with improved replacement parts!
Recommendations on parts, setup, price, and install difficulty?
Yes, please tell us what parts to choose for replacement of our spider injectors that will improve power.
@@traveling.down.the.road56 just type vortec mfi conversion on you tube!
Motorman Mfi is cheap. Ac Delco parts and some felpro gaskets. Upgrade the distributor while in there too
Good vid dude, I love my 97. Worse things about them is those damn flimsy door handles and the 350 foot turn radius.
I have a 98 and that turn radius is definetily the worst thing about it.
A mechanic at my regular shop offered to buy my 1990 Scottsdale five speed just after i got it. That’s a good sign.
I ask every single person I see in their obs is it for sale and the answer is No. People ask me if mine is for sale the answer is No every single time.
I've got a 98 single cab k1500 with a 4.3 vortec pleasing to the eye and solid work truck, lets not forget how cheap parts are. this man is preaching facts
Same here .
98 k1500 black reg cab shortbed
320k, love this truck....
Paid 2, put 4 in it only for my PC of mind. Sold new in NH garage kept
It's been to Wyoming, Texas, Florida, Virginia all without issue.
Hell yea
Same but mine is 5.7 vortec engine really love the pull
I've got a 98 4.3. It's in my 95 YJ. Beast of an engine!
What mileage do you get...vs the larger 5.7 he mentioned?
Does yours pull a trailer ok?
I’m a Mopar guy, I put 500k miles on the same year dodge with the 5.9 magnum v8. These trucks will always have a place in my heart. I’ll probably always have one of these Chevys around me. Like you said, easiest truc ever to work on. And they are
Me too Cummins and D3500s
But,
Have 3 1500s and a Tahoe😊
My 96 C1500 Silverado 4.3L has 400k on the original engine/transmission and it still runs and shifts silky smooth. Have had it since 30k. Tail lights can be a problem until you come across a good circuit board set. And at this age, its the wiring that's starting to have problems. Keep changing the oil/transmission fluid and don't beat the crap out of your truck and your golden.
The 350 small block was the best engine for CHEVY
I have a 93 chevy C1500 4.3 with 320,000 miles! Like the old Bob seger song......"like a rock" Back in the 90s Chevy trucks were "the heartbeat of America" Not so much anymore.
Been through 2 OBS GM's, a '95 Silverado C1500 & a '92 Blazer K1500. Gas hogs but beasts on the road.
Just bought a '95 Sierra C2500 with 522,300 kms for 370$ in an auction. Thing purrs like a kitten at idle, and roars like a lion when I step on the gas.
Not only are these trucks super reliable but in pure looks and aesthetics these trucks are so beautiful
not as reliable and as good looking as the OBS Fords 10x better trucks
The OBS and First Gen Silverado's are probably the best beater truck you can get that you ain't gotta worry bout tearing up. The formers a little easier to work on and fucks aesthetically, but the latter has better gas mileage and is a better truck in most respects.
I was able to buy a 94 Silverado for 2k... that’s all no catch. I’ve had it for like half a year now no issues besides an antifreeze leak which I already fixed. Getting it painted now. These trucks are the best
Hands down the best square body Chevy of all times
i daily my late fathers 98 gmc serria SLT 2500. he bought her as a gm program truck with 9400 miles on it in 2000 he said it was the nicest truck he ever owned. my pop spent the first 3 days he owned her waxing cleaning and greasing everything. He was so happy its such a great memory. he was a hard working man who always put his family first. despite making good money he never really bought much for himself. and so watching him pet his new truck like it was a kitten for half a week brought me a deep sense of joy. god i miss him so much..sorry for getting all touchy feely.
GR8 post, thx😊
This Video has 12 dislikes = 12 die hard ford owners. 😏
Hi from New Zealand. I just brought one imported from the US earlier this year. Absolutely love my 97 C1500. Works like a dream and I get alot of looks from my fellow right hand driving kiwis haha
Great review ✌️
Also from NZ, can't beat these trucks, I have a 96 C1500 with the 350. Great engine.
i noticed from a couple youtube channels you guys seem to love the 90's chevy trucks.
I still have my 95 Chevy C1500 Cheyenne I drove in high school. Almost 20 years ago, still running strong
550,000. Good Lord!
Inherited a 96 Z71 K1500 Silverado from my father. In the process of restoring it right now, it's on its way to being a damn beautiful truck. Only at around 119k miles right now.
The oil from your grimy hands is why the bulbs keep failing.
My family has had our 98 c1500 since I was a toddler. Its was my dad's (he bought it in 2005) and became my first vehicle once I got my license. I still have it and will never get rid of it. Still running strong 💪
I have an early 1999, 2500.This is same as the 1998 vintage.It has a 454 and a 4L80 Trans.It is bullet proof.Love it.
Totally agree. These trucks last forever
I have a 96 k1500 and it’s the best truck I’ve ever owned
just bought a 97 gmc 1500 with the 5.7 296k miles, got it for 1k
The door handles do break occasionally. The big difference is not using the handle to pull the weight of the door
I’m a ford guy but I really do like these OBS chevys
Gmt400 88-98 gotta love them
Before 88 was square body
1996 5.0 305 with 289,966 miles
Nice video.
I have a 97 and 99 and I gotta say the 99 performs a lot better in every aspect.and I also paid about the same for both
I now own a 1996 Chevy Tahoe LT K1500.
No don’t buy them! They suck! TERRIBLE!! Stay away!! I want them for myself!! 😂
I just got one for $3k. Plan on spending another $7k or so fixing it up but then I know I’ll have that truck for life.
270,000 and rolling on.
Best $3500 I ever spent.
Bought with 135,000 in 09.
LED taillight assembly solved my brake light issues.
I've got a 95 Tahoe pretty much the same drivetrain as this truck I got it from my Granddad and I don't think I'll ever sell it. Its just so reliable and and easy to work on
I've got the 4.3 W/T with a manual from my dad, awesome truck
“LT1”
It’s LT1 based but the LT1 was a 1992-1997 Corvette, Camaro, and Impala SS motor making 300hp. What came in these is called the L31, with vortec cylinder heads and was rated at 255hp
(1996-2002)
I miss my 97 suburban so much
I own a 1988 chevy silverado and I love it it has a 5.7 with 22,000 miles on the motor and 180,000 on the body and trans long bed king cab
me too amazing truck
I had an 88 Chev Silverado long box extended cab and canopy and with a few performance parts I managed to get over 1000 kilometers on one tank of gas approx 113 litres. My calculation was 24 miles to the gallon. It was hit and wrecked so I now have 94 GMC Sierra long box extended cab with a canopy, it is getting everything I had on the 88 and should be at same fuel economy soon. I would never buy ford or dodge
I just put a new engine into my 97 5.7 K 1500 Z71. I found your video on The day I finished. Subbed
how much one of those things go for now?
@@Mr334cobra bought mines through a family member for 2500.
He bought it previously for 4500.
I think he paid too much.
Probably find one over 200k for about 3500.
After putting in my new motor and other parts, so far I'm under just 8500.
@@Dagrizzb Reason I ask is because I'm getting my Papaw's soon. Has just over 100k. Mint condition. Looking forward to keeping it forever.
@@Mr334cobrathat's beautiful.
Dont let it go to waste.
Make your pops proud.
So long as the engine turns on when you turn the key, it will always have a use.
Biggest problem I had with mine was the damn oil pan gasket leak.
Went through 2 gaskets before finally replacing it with a Mahle original oil pan gasket and a new spectre oil pan with drain plug on the rear instead of the side. Make sure to seal the gaps between the new timing cover and engine block before installing pan and gasket.
2 step bolt tighten sequence.
@@Dagrizzb Thank you!!
I have owned two 94s and a 92 k1500 to k2500 and just recently got a 98 gmc sierra k1500 with around 200 thousand and I LOVE it .from tbi to vortec it's a nice change .88-98 best body style
I just bought a 97 today after my 89 was totaled by a red light runner in Feb. I didnt even test drive it or open the hood. Love these trucks and would never own anything newer. They are some of the most reliable low maintenance trucks I have ever owned and I USE my truck, they arent drive way queens! OBS is where its at!!!
Amen brother chevy for life 💪💯
Must be a pretty dull life
1992 Chevy Suburban still going and my dad still drives his '97 Silverado 1500
Between my dad and I we’ve had 4. 3 Silverado’s and 1 w/t. 3 were stock 5.7 trucks, only one of which has been rebuilt in to a 383 (just because of a want for a little more power) and one having a 5.0. Each one has served us amazing and have been great trucks.
@@clayj2386 thanks for your reply. I’m looking for a local dynamometer to see what my HP and Torque numbers are because I don’t think I’m even getting the factory stock 5.7L power or torque. Plus I’m looking for any other modifications that I can do to max out my towing ability
I still have a 1993 GMC Sierra i drive it everyday almost 300,000 miles. Its been an amazing truck
The GMT400 is the best truck platform of all time
I've owned a ton of different vehicles but I seem to keep going back to them, I'm about to buy my third here this weekend
I would have to agree with you, the older chevy trucks are amazing. I’m in my early 20s now and I bought my first truck at 17 it was a 2000 Chevy 1500 z71 4x4 with the 5.3 v8 motor I love that truck I’d buy another in a heart beat if I could find one with little to no rust. But since then I’ve upgraded to the 2007-2013 model Silverado’s. They are also pretty nice trucks but the just feel a little cheap but I’m a Chevy guy I love my Chevy trucks 😎👍
I have a ford f150 with 200,000 miles but this made want to buy a chevy
just bought a 98 silverado today with a 350 with 160,000 miles for 1000$ needs rockers, cab corners, brakes and fuel lines.
I have a 96 Sierra 1500 with over 200,000 + and been driving it 20 + years! I appreciate those of you that share video’s for us that don’t want to pay outrageous mechanic prices to fix something we can do ourselves! Thank You!
I also had a 86 Chevy Silverado that was a pleasure to work on! I could sit on the radiator and fix the carb(it had been modified)
I have a 1995 i just replace the muffler..
Original everything. Pastor owned and
never used. 144k original miles. He sold me
his truck for 4 grand. I just bought it about 3
weeks aao. One owner. Can ask for more. Am gonna fix suspension and repaint and that's it.
my ext cab 97 k2500 doesn’t even have the suicide doors lmao
Hey guys I just found a ck1500 long cab 1993 is that a good option? Its overall in good condition no major issues? Any insight its very appreciated ! Thanks!!
I used to own a 97 K2500 with a 350. I regret selling it every day.
