Morning boss, I have an early 99 gmc k2500 and I guess there was some difference's between early and late 99s. Any info you can give, things I should be weary of? Love the truck
Yep...Chevy recycles their truck names in a weird way. Then they changed Silverado to mean all of their full size trucks, regardless of trim. I've kind of lost track of their naming system, so I don't know what their trim levels are now. You'd think they would want to kind of keep the names of their trim levels the same over the years just to avoid confusion, but maybe they want to confuse their customers, idk.
Silverado was a trim level, and those headers aren't stock. The stock ones are some thick heavy cast iron manifolds. Other than that, yeah its a pretty good truck. Ive had a 94 and currently got a 92 that I've built up.
@@eyellgeteven9928 W/T, LS, LT, LTZ. Unless the trim doesn't match, any true Chevy truck guy or gal would know that somebody didn't just stick the Silverado badge on there. I think they change the names around to whatever sounds fanciest and what will sell (of course). Worst example of a recycled name for Chevy is "Blazer" in my opinion.
I am the original proud owner of a 99 Chevy Tahoe with the 5.7 engine. It just clocked 580,000 miles. Other than some minor repairs (fuel pumps, water pumps, radiator) there has never been a problem. It looks and sounds like the day I drove it off the show room floor. I change the oil every 5,000 miles with a good synthetic oil. Best vehicle ever!

True story for you, Scotty! My neighbor got cancer and died. (Very sad) A few years later, his wife traded in their Lexus SUV for a new Jeep Cherokee. I asked her why and she said for better driving in our Colorado snow. I told her she should've sold me the Lexux. A few months ago, she told me her "check engine" light came on (the Cherokee is only 2 years old) so I told her to go to the dealer and pray it's covered under warranty. It's NOT and they want $4,000 to fix it. I told her to get rid of it NOW.....she just came home with another new Lexus...thank God!!
@@tomtheplummer7322 My guess that check engine light was no big deal and the dealer is trying to take a widow to the cleaners! Vast majority of check engine lights are emissions related. That's because from 1975-'98 Silverado was an optional trim package in 1999 the actual truck model was called the Silverado. But yes this truck is a Chevy c1500 Silverado package.

Good video, Scotty. Southern Calif here, and I have a pristine '95 GMC Yukon with this same old-school cast-iron 350 with throttle body injection set-up. I now have 218k miles on its original engine and trans; both of which still haven't been rebuilt, or even as much as a valve cover removed since it left the Janesville, WI factory for shipment to California. Besides all the usual & customary maintenance, i.e. brakes, tires, exhaust, suspension components, cooling system, hoses, etc., this vehicle has been absolutely trouble-free and low-maintenance. I've considered selling it for a newer one, but always have a change-of-heart because it's been so good and faithful to me.
I got one. Bought it about 6 years ago, have done quite a few non motor repairs on it but did them all myself and pretty cheaply. Got the tranny rebuilt two years ago for $650-$700, it's worked perfect ever since. What's impressed me the most is the motor, at about 250k miles it still runs good as ever. Great trucks, also great for anyone who wants to do their own maintenance/repairs but isn't necessarily a mechanic.
I love my '95 Silverado. It still looks pretty clean from a distance but after 26 years and 200,000 miles, everything is breaking on it. You've inspired me to keep it and just work on it to catch up to the problems. The motor still doesn't use any oil but I do have some leaks I need to fix. No problems yet out of the 4L60E but if I do, I'll buy a rebuild and keep driving it. I got it with 140k on it, 12 years ago. They are awesome trucks.
Yes, they are the best, I know so from my '96 Chev 1500 4X4 ext cab, 5.0 V8, perfect, owned last 10 years, someone smashed me, now I have a '98. 5.7V8 same as my last one. The prices have gone up over the last two years. You could buy one decent for $2,000, now the same thing is $5,000 to $12,000 on average in Canadian dollars.. Yes, 500,000 is easy for these. You can buy all kinds of after markets for it. Such a comfortable reliable truck. You really know your stuff Scotty, thanks!
I've got a 92 gmc Sierra same truck. Runs like a champ. Besides maintaining it properly I replaced the steering column the other day, I absolutely love this truck.
My brother had a '94 GMC C1500 long bed similar to the one in the video. He had over 450,000 miles on it, when the rear end went out. He could have installed a $90 rear end from Pull-a-Part, and he'd still be driving it, but he was ready for something new, so he junked it. It never burned any oil. It was a 5 speed manual transmission with the 4.3 litre V-6 and was made in Ft Wayne, Indiana.
We own a gmc-97-k/1500, 5-speed, 5.7., factory rear posi. Last snowstorm, we pulled out 4 newer 4x4 vehicles stuck. 1990s and prior, AWESOME TRUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can you imagine how much Scotty could make if he opened a used car dealership? I saw a Maverick earlier today and thought, "I wonder if that was made in Ontario like Scotty's was."
That Silverado badge is legitimate. It was chevy's upper trim package on the GMT400 generation trucks. My 94 has well over 300k miles and still looking and running great. And you're right about the 4L60e transmission. It's the weakest point, and really just due to a few small flaws that can be corrected before a failure, possibly avoiding a rebuild for a long time.
Probably most of it. The 700r4/4l60 and 4l60e are all not known for their towing capabilities. 3/4 clutches are a weak point of these trans, same with the sun shell stripping.
I ran my 88 and 93 GMC Sierras in overdrive, and fortunately, the original transmissions held up just fine. Over 200,000 on the 88, and 165,000 on the 93. Each had the 350. Drove those trucks rather conservatively and had the transmission fluids changed regularly, which helped.
I have a 96 GMC SLE C1500. First 3 door. I bought it new. Now has 175,000 miles and still runs great. Have only run Mobil 1 10w30. Does not use oil on 5000 mile interval. Parts for truck are plentiful and cheap. Mine looks like new (Texas truck) every time I take to a shop for trans service or alignment there is always a mechanic there that asks me if it is for sale. They know what these trucks are.
I’m from Canada. I drive a 1995 K1500 Suburban Starcraft conversion 400kms a day for my work as an owner operator courier driver. Been using it for about a year and can honestly say they are very durable and reliable trucks. Only got 345,000 kms but hasn’t given me a single issue on the road. It’s my best friend most days, and I trust taking it anywhere.
Nice! I have a 97 Chevy Cheyenne 2500, 5.7L V8. 188,000 miles. Exterior, interior, engine and transmission all original and in great condition. Luckily it was passed down from one family member to another who understood the importance of regular maintenance. I really lucked out with this one!
Wow, my '98 only has 148,000, but they're hard miles (a lot of dirt road driving). I'm thinking I'll keep it forever since it's got a stick and the US doesn't seem to make 'em anymore.
I got my 96 Suburban K2500 7.4L a few years ago, price only $4000, $2400 after my trade in (99 Sierra 1500 with failed transmission), just needed fuel lines replaced. I put a new fuel pump in at the same time, because the tank had to come down anyway. I've put 27k miles on since, great truck. Pulls my 6500 pound trailer much better than the previous truck did.
Bought a 92 Chevy Cheyenne 1500 WT new, it was a demo, had all of 300 miles on it. Best vehicle I ever owned. Broke my heart when I had to sell it, moved out of the country and the import tax to Danmark was 65% of the vehicles blue book. Had it 11 years and it was immaculate so 65% of immaculate was a lot of dough. Probably still runnin' somewhere out there.
Scotty just bought a 1998 ext cab Chevy just to have a truck around the house always needing a truck. It’s nice to see honestly this day and age ! Take care
I owned 2 C1500’s, a c3500, two GMT800’s, and a GMT900. The best year C series are 1990-1995. The c series were clearly superior trucks, and after the GMT900, I was done with GM. I miss the 454SS and 95 dually rclb the most of all of them.
So i own a 94 k1500 step side. Same engine, same 4l60e. Awesome truck pulled a 7000lb load with it this summer across state. These trucks are extremely tough, ill never sell it. This one scotty is showing is in better shape, AC don't work on mine but it has never left me walking even when hauling trailers.
I live in Canada and I searched for one of these beauties that wasn't rusted out for several years, (very tough to find). Finally found one tucked away in a barn for the past 12-15 years. No rust and only 93000KM, ( defiantly a keeper) a couple bruises but practically mint inside and out. I have a couple videos on my channel showing it off. Thanks for posting this video.
That Silverado badge is for the trim level offered on the C/K trucks, it is not a badge from a modern Silverado. They also did not come with headers. They are fantastic trucks though, my favorite truck ever is the 88-98 Chevy/GMC C/K
My gramps got a 1994 K1500 Chevrolet Silverado with 411,927 miles on it and it's still the original engine. Been using it now for a month and it's such a great truck. Only thing I've noticed is it doesn't like to just sit in idle. I was at work sitting in the truck with the A/C on for like 45 minutes because of my break and I noticed it went slightly above the middle of the thermometer. Still needed maybe 4/10 left to reach the danger zone. All his interior is original and nothing has been rebuilt. It's my gramps proudest purchase
My 97 Chevy work truck has 403k and is yet to use oil AT ALL. But I do drive without BEATING ON IT. I drive it like I like it. Makes a difference. Plain grill, standard headlights, chrome bumper since new.
Just purchased a 94 Suburban k1500 for $1500. Needs paint, carpet and a few odds and ends. This is the third 88-98 gm truck I have had. I agree that they are solid, reliable vehicles. Being a diesel mechanic I am looking at swapping the 5.7 for a duramax or Cummins at some point. Showing much love for the gmt400!! Well technically my Sub is a gmt425 🙂
GMT400 (88-98).. best truck Chevy ever made. They were also produced in Flint (as mine was). Just walked in the dealer and ordered one in 89.. Still have it... and always will. Easy to work on and fix. As an instant classic, it's well supported by the after market. Hot GMT400's right now are the suburbans. Get em while you can.
I have a 1996 GMC 2500K HD 4WD with134k with a 7.4 l monster. Great truck!! Bought for 3500 and put about 500 to do minor repairs. Everything works well. Same color as the one you showed. 8 foot bed and this truck moves!!
Grew up in a Silverado like this. It was my first vehicle. Loved that truck. Hearing that chime when you start it up brings back all kinds of nostalgia. Aches my heart seeing that beauty just sit at my parents place. Did a lot of crazy stuff in that truck haha.
those old chevy pickups are amazing, I know a guy who knows a guy who had an 1990 2500, had 1.2 million miles on the original transmission, and 2 engines
Scotty I figured you of all people would know that those 4 to 1 headers are not stock... That is not a factory GM manifold but these OBS style trucks are super tough and reliable
Thanks for sharing exhaust system repair techniques and the incredibly clean underbody of the GM Canadian built pick-up with a lot of room to spare for maintenance and repairs.
Lol well that’s Tennessee low pay bad jobs equals tore up from the floor up cars

My home town is there and when I visit it's like a time machine back to the 70's. Every where you see Pontiac Grand Ams, Malibus , Buicks, Fords ....but very few Honda/Toyota/European cars.
Tennessee has no state income taxes and property taxes are among the lowest in the U.S. so rural people can enjoy living there. Houston can be spendy, but drive towards east Texas and its about the same as rural Tennessee. Memphis is much different than Nashville, which is much different than Knoxville or Chattanooga. If you drove from far northeast Tennessee to the southwest corner, its actually less distance than to the Canadian border. Tennessee is a beautiful state with varied geography and accents also vary.
@@Briandkd life is pretty good here in Chattanooga. Median income is around 44k, and the cost of living is low too! We have fiber internet and beautiful rolling hills. There are people with very nice cars around here, but plenty of decent looking under 10 year old cars too. My Dad is retired, just paid cash for his wife/my mom to have a 2017 es 350, but he drives a 2001 Tundra. No reason to get rid of it! I think Scotty is still building clientele in the new area, and he will have more appeasing cars for your eyes.
Got my 97 Suburban for 1,000. Replaced the battery, cats, cam sensor, some radiator hoses and changed the transmission filter and its running like a dream and passes smog with about 2000 invested total
Silverado was a trim package that was pretty common, along with the z71, they didn't come with factory headers, most common issues are ball joints, wheel bearings, door handles, and the transmission. Other than that they are basically bullet proof
My first vehicle was a 1997 Tahoe (2 door), pretty much same chassis and engine and it was extremely reliable and great to do some towing with. The only downfall was that it caught the rot bug.
I bought a 1990 k2500 that didn't run for 300. got it running found that the motor had rod knock, bought a motor for 100 off craigslist slapped it in and drive it for a year. used it for some jobs than sold it for 1500
Got a 2004 Silverado with 140k miles. Bought it brand new. Had some suspension and other work done on it that cost five grand. Compared to the cost of a new one that's cheap. It will out live me.
EvilBunnies 420 I have a 98 Silverado ext cab 350 w/160K. My mechanic just worked on it & said "I can't give you any reason to get rid of it". This same mechanic, years ago, told me "you drive your cars until they return back to iron ore". 🤣

We’re did you buy the transmission???
Thank you Scotty for this "Live free or die" on your shelf. That's why people love you so much because you are a true human and a loving soul.
I love my 1994 Chevy C1500. My first vehicle and I’ve owned it for close to 17 years. It’s been very reliable and these are great looking trucks.
I own a 94 chevy c1500 step side. Have you had any problems with your transmission
Got a 1995 Z71 with the factory tow package and optional remote door unlock. All still working! 356,453 miles later :D
Thats really impressive!
I agree they are keepers. Had the motor rebuilt at 250000. At 260012 now There goes the warranty. Never give up.
I’ve learned so much from this channel and wanted to say thank you for all of the information you give!
Clean your MAF censer!
Can you imagine how much Scotty could make if he opened a used car dealership? I saw a Maverick earlier today and thought, "I wonder if that was made in Ontario like Scotty's was."
You’re welcome
Love these old Chevy pick ups.
Built like a tank.
I'm still trying to get use to these 90s trucks being called "old." My old truck is a 72; I call my 99 Chevy my new truck.
@@demetriuscooksey7147 Same here.
Have an '84 K5 and a '96 Tahoe.
What are those flaws? I just got one with 80,000 miles.
What I've heard is, the reason the transmission tend to go bad is because everyone is hauling in overdrive instead of regular drive
Probably most of it. The 700r4/4l60 and 4l60e are all not known for their towing capabilities. 3/4 clutches are a weak point of these trans, same with the sun shell stripping.
Yep
I ran my 88 and 93 GMC Sierras in overdrive, and fortunately, the original transmissions held up just fine. Over 200,000 on the 88, and 165,000 on the 93. Each had the 350. Drove those trucks rather conservatively and had the transmission fluids changed regularly, which helped.
the m3 logo at "people always stick things on cars" got me good. much love from Rhode Island Scotty.
I saw an e90 3 series with an M5 badge lol
@@VQ.Family I got Chevy decals on my ranger
Silverado was a trim level on the ck back in the day so it was probably the actual badge
@@madmonkey8141 😂😂😂
I’ve seen a Camry with lexus badges swapped, and a corolla with Audi badges, wish I would’ve got a picture
We use these for work trucks because they don’t die. They have over 230k miles on all three of our work trucks. Built to last like a rock.
Hey Scotty, that “Silverado” badge was stuck on by the factory. Its called a trim package.
Those old trucks were great I agree 100 percent
Hey Scott I've got a 94 and a 91 and your exactly right. Easy to work on and very reliable.
My mechanic said not to get rid of my 94 Silverado. It will last longer than any new truck. Great video Scotty.
I'm so blessed that I have the same reliable first vehicle that is the Chevy C1500 350CI. Mine has 470,000 miles on and still runs amazing
Scotty's honesty is awesome. If you wanna know what to expect when buying a car, Scotty will tell you.
I got a 98 stepside favorite truck ever. Only replaced the original starter and belt tensioner from 98.
Still driving my 1998 K1500 with 450,000 on the original engine. Been a great truck for me.
Wow, my '98 only has 148,000, but they're hard miles (a lot of dirt road driving). I'm thinking I'll keep it forever since it's got a stick and the US doesn't seem to make 'em anymore.
gmt400's are probably the GOATs for longevity/ cost of repairs
I got my 96 Suburban K2500 7.4L a few years ago, price only $4000, $2400 after my trade in (99 Sierra 1500 with failed transmission), just needed fuel lines replaced. I put a new fuel pump in at the same time, because the tank had to come down anyway. I've put 27k miles on since, great truck. Pulls my 6500 pound trailer much better than the previous truck did.
I miss my 95 Silverado that truck was a beast never failed me
my first vehicle was a 1991 gmc sierra it had 300k miles on it when i sold it and the guy drove it another 3 years lol. they were solid trucks.
My dad had one of those, heard it's still running today over 300,000
Bought a 92 Chevy Cheyenne 1500 WT new, it was a demo, had all of 300 miles on it.
Just bought a 2000 k2500, 454 w 158000 miles. Super clean body, she’s gonna stay with me for a long time
Only one problem 6 miles to the gallon.
@@JamesThompson-ol3eu can’t seem to pass a gas station lol
Scotty just bought a 1998 ext cab Chevy just to have a truck around the house always needing a truck. It’s nice to see honestly this day and age ! Take care
I owned 2 C1500’s, a c3500, two GMT800’s, and a GMT900. The best year C series are 1990-1995. The c series were clearly superior trucks, and after the GMT900, I was done with GM. I miss the 454SS and 95 dually rclb the most of all of them.
Got a 97 Sierra 1500 4.3l V6, My first truck has lasted 14 years so far on my hands.
I love how you show nancy P WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT OLD GRANDMAS OR OLD BATS!!
I have a old Chevy truck with 304,000 miles and one with 436,000 miles. Definitely would buy another.
I love that generation of the chevy truck
I have a 88 and everything he said is true, except I have had no prob with transmission.. I love it .. had new paint job 20 yrs ago haha..
Scotty! I'm from MA and appreciate your shout out. The right to repair is the only thing I am proud of about this state.
The chilling thing is that any state ISN'T that way.
Yeah I'm confused. I had no idea that any state could tell you not to repair. What the hell is that about?
Any of the older V8 real framed GM vehicles are solid👍 I've always wanted a 90s Suburban with a 454
That Silverado badge is for the trim level offered on the C/K trucks, it is not a badge from a modern Silverado. They also did not come with headers. They are fantastic trucks though, my favorite truck ever is the 88-98 Chevy/GMC C/K
1, that truck is a Silverado which was the top trim level for the GMT400 platform, 2, those headers aren't factory, and 3, that's a short bed.
Thankyou Massachusetts. I am proud of living in such a smart state.
And lots of gun control
My gramps got a 1994 K1500 Chevrolet Silverado with 411,927 miles on it and it's still the original engine. Been using it now for a month and it's such a great truck. Only thing I've noticed is it doesn't like to just sit in idle. I was at work sitting in the truck with the A/C on for like 45 minutes because of my break and I noticed it went slightly above the middle of the thermometer. Still needed maybe 4/10 left to reach the danger zone. All his interior is original and nothing has been rebuilt. It's my gramps proudest purchase
Absolutely love my 98 K1500. Got almost 270k miles and it still runs strong!
My 96 K1500 has 65k miles. It’ll take me 50 yrs to get 270k !
@@schutzhund3933 I drive my 100 miles a day back and forth to work. Runs like a top, oil changes every 5k and regular tune ups!
Yup I have 98 k1500 -330klm 1.09 litre gas up here Vancouver Can , she's good truck hard on fuel , it's payed for lol . Cheers y'all
My 97 Chevy work truck has 403k and is yet to use oil AT ALL.
88-98 Silverado & Sierras are badass looking & best looking truck that Chevy & GMC has ever released. Wish I still had mine
My 1994 Caprice LS with the B4U package drives like a dream lol. The 330 ft-lbs of torque is quite fun especially in rainy days lol.
I love this generation of Chevy/GMC (GMT400 platform) trucks!
I bought a 95 for $800 and put $1,200 into it... now it is a totally different truck and runs absolutely great.
Get em while you can.
there was a guy in mass, that had a 1988 silverado, that went almost 700,000 miles!
I have a 1996 GMC 2500K HD 4WD with134k with a 7.4 l monster. Great truck!! Bought for 3500 and put about 500 to do minor repairs. Everything works well. Same color as the one you showed. 8 foot bed and this truck moves!!
use a tin can to patch an exhaust , scotty giving us the old school work arounds. Gangsta
I have a '95 k1500 with the 5.7 in it. Best truck I've ever had
I love my 89 C2500. Runs like a champ! Has a 350 along with a 4l80e in it. Great truck hands down
just bought a 94 and im in canada, my boss sent me to this video, the day after he saw the truck, awesome love it !!
My 1994 had a Silverado badge in the same spot. It was a package back in those days.
I got a 1994 gmc k1500 with the 5.7 V8 it's got 175,000 miles bought it for 3500 dollars and runs great I absolutely love it.
1999-2007 Silverados with the Vortec V8s are pretty solid too. I know plenty of folks that have them with over 300k miles.
My 92 cheyenne 3500 cost me 1500, she's a MAJOR gas hog but she runs like a dream and is way easy to work on
I'm noticing a trend with these Tennessee videos, Scotty's customer's cars are more on the hooptie el cheapo side than the ones from Texas.
I think Scotty is still building clientele in the new area, and he will have more appeasing cars for your eyes.
hahaha true! Same goes for the strip clubs
Got my 97 Suburban for 1,000. Replaced the battery, cats, cam sensor, some radiator hoses and changed the transmission filter and its running like a dream and passes smog with about 2000 invested total
When Chevy made good trucks. 5.7 liter 350 engines where reliable. Best looking body style built for ten years.
I just got my liscense last week and I'm driving around a really mint 1994 2wd silverado with only 54k on the clock
4:20
*scotty yelling at the top of his lungs so you can't hear the engine knock*
FOR AN OLD TRUCK IT STILL HANDLES DECENT
That’s an exhaust leak. He mentioned it needed exhaust work in the beginning
Lmfao
Our 1996 Suburban LT with over 316k miles still a daily driver. Built like tanks. Will run forever!
Silverado was a trim package that was pretty common, along with the z71, they didn't come with factory headers, most common issues are ball joints, wheel bearings, door handles, and the transmission. Other than that they are basically bullet proof
I have Chevy 1995 z71 5.7 over 200k milles no weird noises on the motor or suspension and still running like dream! I really love!! My truck
My first vehicle was a 1997 Tahoe (2 door), pretty much same chassis and engine and it was extremely reliable and great to do some towing with. The only downfall was that it caught the rot bug.
Lucky to have that as your first vehicle. Man. Congrats!
I bought a 1990 k2500 that didn't run for 300. got it running found that the motor had rod knock, bought a motor for 100 off craigslist slapped it in and drive it for a year. used it for some jobs than sold it for 1500
100 more Hp with the hood scoops.
I wish
Got a 2004 Silverado with 140k miles. Bought it brand new. Had some suspension and other work done on it that cost five grand. Compared to the cost of a new one that's cheap. It will out live me.
These trucks are very good and very reliable,I have a 1998 chevy silverado
EvilBunnies 420 I have a 98 Silverado ext cab 350 w/160K. My mechanic just worked on it & said "I can't give you any reason to get rid of it". This same mechanic, years ago, told me "you drive your cars until they return back to iron ore". 🤣
Hes right I bought a 93 Silverado for 500 bucks. Tuned it up and sold it for a grand when I was ready to upgrade. Amazing trucks
The side badges “Silverado” “Cheyenne” and “Scottsdale” were factory
Yup, those badges were the trim levels for the C/K trucks
