I feel you on that. I always tell people this Reliability Is bad profitability for companies now these days. For example most consumers upgrade their phones every few years for latest and greatest features. I think the trend is going to cars now companies are realizing. No point making reliable cars if most consumers want latest and greatest.

I totally agree with you! I've got a 1996 Chevy Tahoe 1500. 211xxx miles. 5.7 V-8. I've added a K&N air filter, headers, MagnaFlo mufflers, high performance distributor, cap and rotor, iridium spark plugs and 8 mm wires. I pull a 23 foot Terry travel trailer with it. This is a TANK of a truck!
Bought my wife's grandfather's 1995 1500, V8 only rear wheel. Only had 117K miles (2 years ago) on it and it lived inside their heated garage through Minnesota winters, so very little rust. I want a reality TV show of Scotty just doing every day stuff while narrating in his manic voice and body language. Going to the grocery store, stopping by the bank, visiting with friends, etc.
the last good year was 2006 or 2007 classic. the best years were 1996-2007 with the vortec engines. the tbi engines kinda sucked compared to the better vortec.
I worked on many components of the GMT800 through tier 2 and 3 suppliers. It was the end of building simple fuel injection and heavy duty platforms. The Vortec engines were simple beasts. The network of suppliers was either US or EU/Australia. One big happy profitable way of making tanks. I remember the quality testing and durability review was massive. Then the effect of NAFTA started showing - jobs and factories shut down en mass in north America, I'm talking 25 in a span of 2 years. With it went the body of knowledge that was about production and priorities for a truck/car, all gone and now engineered to be cheap, and maximum profit. The boardroom and decision making was based solely on cost, not quality or any long term objective. GMAC killed GM because they didn't spend much money on RnD. The tried and true model was upended with emissions and drive to build offshore.
As someone who works for GM and owns a 94 s10, I can honestly say GM has drastically gone down hill. I'm only 25 but I remember when GM actually cared more about the quality rather than the profits. Nowadays they only care about profits and take any shortcuts possible
I bought a new 94 Buick Park Avenue and still have it as my only car. Still like new and I can work on it . It is a keeper for me. Today I would not buy a new GM car even if it came with gold bumpers. Their quality is in the toilet....crappy management and engeering. Enough said.
@@nakoma5 lmao vehicles from the past were actually built to last. For example, my truck is 27yrs old and still runs like a brand new truck. Personally I belive silverados up until 07 were bullet proof, reliable monsters, the ls engine is the best smallblock v8 design, with 6 bolt mains and very very easy to work on, parts are cheap, but once gm intruded DOD and active lifters, many failures came
Yes, they were bulletproof. I have an '05 that I bought new and still have; short bed regular cab 1500 LS V8 4.8 liter. Never had any issues with it, really great old truck. Only thing is that it's a 5 speed manual and I am getting a little tired of shifting gears all the time, but there's still no way I would ever sell it. You just don't see many regular cab two door, short bed pickups anymore. And even fewer with the 5 speed manual.
I'd say through the 90s. My dad got a 2000 Sierra new and it ran like a champ until about 165k when the first fuel pump went out. It went through 3 of them, but other than that it was a steering pump and oil pump that went out, both after 200k miles. Eventually the transmission died around 245k when it was my truck. I was a mentally challenged person and bought a 2018 Silverado because I liked that old truck and jesus christ, I've already gone through a leaking radiator and busted water pump before 60k miles. Oh and my battery already died too. One of the biggest regrets I have.

You're right about the older Chevy trucks. I had a '91 as my first vehicle, drove it until '05 and bought a new one, which I still drive to this day. Never had any issues with either one, unbelievably reliable trucks. I'm planning to keep my '05 indefinitely, there is no reason to ever get another one. Chevy has a website where you can buy brand new engines and transmissions, and for a fraction of the cost of another truck, I could replace the engine and trans someday if they ever wear out. So far, at 160k miles, both the engine and trans are still working perfectly. Of course I do keep up with the maintenance though and I'm sure that helps a lot. Young people are always trying to buy my '05 truck from me, I keep it in like new condition so it looks great. They say "oh dude it's a cat-eye!, how much you sell it for?".. Sorry not for sale. Lol
I had the same track here in Canada and I had over 400000 kmeters on it and it still ran but rusted away. It was by far the most reliable truck I ever owned.
I have a 97 gmc pickup runs great 171000 Kms and a 1990 k 1500 z71 sport side with 400,000 kms still run great original engine and transmission and original transfer case. Love these trucks
Oh wow I’m a bit early but yeah our 98 silverado has been through hell and back and it’s the one truck we’ll never sell. Just pulled a big trailer off the lake with ours an hour ago actually.
Happy early birthday!!! My birthday was yesterday. My dads friend has a 2001 Silverado and it’s a solid reliable truck, 300,000+ miles still running well. Highly recommend it. May not be the nicest car but if you get a higher end model it’s still comfy and you get that reliability from the old Silverado’s. The new ones just aren’t built the same.
I have an 03 silverado and I don't really have any problems with it, 201k miles, just shakes a bit on the highway sometimes. Shouldn't be going too fast anyway... My family also has an 02 suburban that lasted 376k miles, I'm gonna throw a used engine in and try to get it working because everything else with it is fine. Excellent trucks back then

I been driving my 2007 silverado classic for 7 years now currently has 300,000 miles yes 300,000 miles no problems at all. all i had replaced on it is the fuel pump, alternator. Oil and filter every 3,000 miles. Still running like new no check engine lights no problems I got it when it had 120,000 miles. It can't get more reliable than that.
You could undercoat the frame and make it rust proof. I did it to my truck, but I used the Walmart .99¢ a can black spray paint instead of Rhino Line. Rhino Line 🦏 is one of the best though but cost more. It took about ten cans to spray the frame drive shafts. High temperature engine or paint for the exhaust will keep the exhaust from rusting and parts that get hot.
I've got 347k on my 02 Silverado. It's a pretty rare combination of extended cab & 8 ft LONG bed. You don't see too many of those in the 1/2 ton. Not sure you can even get one today. She's leaking some oil and definitely needs some work, ball joints etc. but it still runs really good once it warms up. I'm considering getting a re-manufactured motor and transmission at some point rather than buying a new truck. The body and interior are still in pretty nice shape and I kind of like having a 20 year old truck. Don't freak out if it gets scratched. LOL
I bought an 02 as well though mine is a single cab. She has some oil near the oil pan, probably a rear main seal going out, but at 246k who cares. Probably needs a new tie rod but that ain't much of a choir. She's just got body rust. But if the engine fails I'll swap it for a 5.3 or better.
I am in the OBS family. 91 Z71 with tow package and 95 Silverado with 6 cyl. 21 highway/ 17 around town. 186k and 192k. All original. Hope to get another 30 years from both! Joe from Smyrna Delaware
Ive got a 2003 Tahoe and 2005 Silverado. Both have been bulletproof. Thanks to Scotty’s info, I’ll hang on to them as long as possible, then I don’t know what to buy. Maybe 4Runner and F150. I love listening to this dude. He’s so dam funny.
freshen them up now while its still cheap and easy to find parts and keep them nice. buy a cheap daily driver and replace it with another cheap daily when something serious breaks. none of them are very good anymore sadly.
I've many Chevy trucks over the last 45 years. The problems I've had in total with all of them could be counted on one hand. This past June I lost all of my vehicles in a fire. A 2010 Chevy 1500, 2009 Chevy 2500HD, and a 2014 Chevy Equinox. The 2010 and 2014 I purchased new. The only problem was with the Equinox. The ECM went bad and was replaced under warranty. 2009 was purchased use and had 116,000 miles and it ran like a champ. None of them burned oil, had transmission, or read end problems. After the fire, I went out and purchased a 2020 Chevy 2500HD Duramax 4X4 and a 2020 Equinox. Too early to complain about any issues with these vehicles. None so far and I'm sure I will be driving them for many years without any problems.

the last good year was 2006 or 2007 classic.
the best years were 1996-2007 with the vortec engines. the tbi engines kinda sucked compared to the better vortec.
